Old Oak & Park Royal Regeneration Site: Old Oak & Park Royal, London MA2/ 2018-19 University of Sheffield Course: LSC 6005 Special Project, Planning/Design Old Oak & Park Royal is the biggest industrial area in London. Due to the HS2 is going to set new station at here, the site get opportunities to deliver better environment to the area. This project cross planning to design stage, provided new systems and development/ design principles to the future London’s 2/3 zone. Giving north-west London a walkable & cyclable environment and deliver people better and greener images of city life.

Analysis & Issue Development Issue

Existing Open Space

The existing open space mainly are car parks. Only few parks and one canal which is not enough to support the user in the area.

All the resource are going to Old Oak. However, all the researches show Park Royal needs more support to change.

Authority’s Proposed Land Use

Surface Flooding

The GIS data shows here suffer from serious surface water issue due to the high percentage of hard surface.

Authority only wants to develop Old Oak and remain Park Royal keeps as industrial area.

Aim & Concept

6

New Development Model for Outer London

Three steps of growing city

1.Liveable Place Health street, Quality open spaces, Affordable housing. 2.Good Green Infrastructure Improve well‐being, Increase biodiversity, Water management to create resilient environment 3. Sustainable Town Mixed land use, Well linked public transport and walkable/cyclable route.

Base on Kevin Lynch’s theory of District, Node, Path and Edge to develop the area. First, city starting from small towns (node) then new development will along the main roads (path) to grow. Then the main areas expand to become the district and the roads link together to form the new nodes. Finally, the towns link to each other to form a city.

Planning Principle Every category provides 3 hierarchies to develop the area, and apply to the whole site. The colour blocks on the strategy in the next page refer to this principle, to show the location will follow the character to develop.

Development Phases

Strategy Plan

Phase 1 2019-2035 Starting from existing hub (Central Middlesex Hospital) and surrounding tube stations area, along the existing main road to develop. The land along canal also starting transform into high quality housing and shops.

1

Phase 2 2036-2050 After the districts developed, the nodes start growing. The building along main roads are regenerated into office/ shop and some housing, then linked the districts and nodes together.

9 7

8

9

Phase 3 2051-2070 The whole site regenerated and few area are remained as industrial area.

New Systems

8

Base on existing systems, follow the phases to build the new systems. Adding many parks, squares and yards which can equally serve every area, and those open spaces are linked by the new routes. Moreover, turn the land use more diversity, but still remain several industrial area to provide job opportunities.

Design Phases

The Canal side Park Extend and open the original threshold to the canal side path, provide a new gateway to reach the Grand Union Canal. The park is part of the Park Avenue, also the starting/ending point of the route.

Phase 2

The Park Avenue The link connect the canal and the square. Provide linear open space for people to commute, break, gather and enjoy the green environment.

Phase 2.5

The Central Way Square & Green Gate The last stage for the route, connected the canal and hospital together. Located at the meddle of the route, in the office/ shop/ residential area. Provide the most dynamic activities opportunity and a temporary detention pond.

Phase 3

The Hospital Plaza The first change of the Park Royal area, and as a starting/ending point of the route. Provide a green and therapeutic space for the user of the Central Middlesex Hospital. The original roundabout shape has been kept and transform into a urban woodland and temporary detention pond.

Phase 1

13

Vegetation Typology

Wetland/Woodland

The most natural feeling type with variety vegetation combination. With different hight/ stem of trees and understorey.

Grove

Fitting into car park or some space with heavy commute requirement. With light tree trunk and canopy, and no understorey.

Avenue

Tall single stem tree on the road side and short single/ multi stem trees on the walking side. With understorey.

Meadow

Combine with lawn and using multi stem tree to form the space. Providing light but green feeling for urban area.

Sheffield Ring Road Site D Site: St Mary’s Gate, Sheffield MA1/ 2018 University of Sheffield Course: LSC 6114 Landscape Urbanism & Design

The ring road now is totally not friendly to pedestrians and cyclists. Subways and complicated crossing force people bypass or not happy to visit this area. This project base on the idea of landscape urbanism, use 3 different tree typology: Avenue, Grove and Woodland to recreate the space. Bring the human as the priority and allow people can easily to cross the junction.

M

18

19

Masterplan The original surface of this area is impermeable. Also, the tall buildings and heavy traffic cause strong wind and serious air pollution for this area. Through growing different tree species and using the different density of the crown layer, the strong wind could slow down and the air pollution is filtered. Moreover, most of the surface changed to permeable to allow the water can go down.

Working Model These models showed the Avenue, Grove and Woodland three types of tree typology. When looking through the top, it showed the plan view, and look from the front will see the 3D environment.

20

Typology The working model used the idea of Lego, made different types of trees and punched holes on the base. Therefore, it allowed to easily change and try different density, tree type and space atmosphere.

21

Grey to Green Phase 2 Site: Castlegate, Sheffield MA1/ 2017 University of Sheffield Course: LSC 6112 Urban Ecological Design & Management Castlegate which along the River Don used to the vibrant area of Sheffield. After markets left and Victoria Station closed, this area only left wide motorway and grey landscape. Through the Grey to Green Project, hope to make this area attractive again and bring people and ecology value back.

Vision & Concept

Strategy Maximise the priority of walking and cycling on the road. Creating a focal point as a gathering space at the main junction. It also combine the function of detaintion pond and ecology value with iconic Sheffield Peak District landscape charctre.

Urban oasis ‧Like an oasis which contains water and plants, a thriving area in a place without life. ‧A place could make people feel calm and relax, escape the crowded busy city lives. ‧As a focal point and gathering place, link to other spots or lead people to come to visit here.

Masterplan The planting bed combine the function of watermanagement. The water would along the bioswale on roads going to the detention pond (Junction Oasis). The road are higher than the planting bed to ensure when the storm water gomming, people still can walk through.

26

This area provided good quality walking space for everyone. Only allow emergency and other services (lorries of shops, etc.) get in.

Junction Oasis

Connected 5 roads, the heart of this area. It's a rain garden, not only supply a space for people to do activities, also had ecological benefits and can hold water when rainfall.

Corner Park

Connect to Park Square. A point leading people who walk from train station to start visiting this area.

Interval Bar Beer Garden Construction Plan & Planting Design Site: University of Sheffield, Sheffield MA1/ 2017 University of Sheffield Course: LSC 6112 Urban Ecological Design & Management The Interval Bar is a popular pub which belongs to the University’s Student Union. Now the surface is impermeable and planting are random. The project wishes to provide an ecological design and a sensible planting design for the strongly used beer garden and minimise the cost.

Playdough Landform Studies Because of the park got huge high difference and varies landform interest, using the playdough as a working model to study the landform opportunities. Created the shape first then drew down and put sketches on it to find out the best solution for each area in the park.
