Dive Abaco
Conveniently located in Marsh Harbour at the Conch Inn Resort and Marina, Dive Abaco has been in business since 1978 and is celebrating 40 years of service to the Abaco community this year. Dive Abaco was founded by a Chicago businessman named Logan LaChance, and was originally located in Marsh Harbour Marina at the Jib Room before moving to Great Abaco Beach Resort finally settling at the location where it is now. Dive Abaco was then purchased by
Keith Rogers, who visited the Conch Inn in 1990. The business is primarily a scuba diving and snorkel center offering scuba and snorkeling trips as well as island hopping. Also available are PADI, NAUI and CMAS certifications; equipment rental and sales; underwater photography; guided underwater tours of reefs, tunnels and caverns; sunset cruises or dinner/full-moon cruises; island hopping tours; private charters; and a resort boutique for guests to purchase souvenirs. According to Keith, Dive Abaco specializes in small groups of divers, with a high level of personal attention to guided dives and instruction. Dive Abaco’s half-day tours run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and sometimes, there are afternoon trips depending on the demand for them. Tours can cover anywhere from the north end of Guana Cay to Little Harbour in the south. Dive Abaco’s boats are US Coast Guard certified, and can accommodate 22 passengers and two crew. However, for the sake of comfort, Keith prefers to keep the groups at a maximum of eight to 10 passengers. Before embarking on any tour, Keith provides information about the sites the group will visit along with safety procedures and instruction on how to enter and exit the water. Keith explained that the tours are designed for everyone to enjoy as he selects the sites that are not too difficult. In fact, Keith has earned a reputation for helping divers to improve their skills – skills that they can take with them well into the future. He recalled one of his client’s first ocean dives where they saw a nurse shark. It was a great treat for the client, however, he

explained that it’s not something that can be expected for every client’s first diving experience. “I take my guests where safety is paramount, and where they can have a good time,” he emphasized. “The tours are for the novices to the more experienced.” Because he is hard pressed to send every guests away with a memorable experience, Keith has also enjoyed having repeat customers as a result of his efforts. Trip Advisor seems to have tracked his progress, too, issuing consecutive certificates of excellence since 2014-2017 to Dive Abaco. The Great Abaco Express
Glender Knowles, owner of The Great Abaco Express, invites you to “Feel Da Freedom” aboard her Abaco eco-friendly tours. In fact, the tours she offers will be the last stop on our detailed list of tour companies on Abaco. As the Transportation and Tours Cacique Winner for 2008, Glender is certainly no newcomer to this arena with The Great Abaco Express being established in 2006. As a transportation and tour business provider, Glender offers charter services for groups needing transportation between the southern and northern settlements of Abaco. Upon request, Glender can also conduct and arrange tours to Abaco’s historical sites and nearby cays. Through The Great Abaco Express, Glender does cultural, educational, historical, and eco tours. She also offers specialty tours for families, church and school groups, and provides bus scheduling for companies that contact her. A Grand Bahama Day Tour and Nassau Day Tour complete the package. A brave soul indeed, Glender is able to cater to groups ranging from two people into the hundreds. To sum up all that she does, she described her tours as “fun tours.” If you are fortunate to know Glender, fun is truly an understatement for such a vivacious personality. Besides her fun tours, Glender’s dominant focus is domestic tourism. “I feel that Bahamians need to enjoy the beauty of our country like the foreign tourists do. To quote the late Ricky Johnson, our ‘eyes are wide shut.’ We don’t enjoy what we have,” she sadly expressed. “My prime market is domestic tourism. I want people to know about the other islands.”

Destination Abaco
So far, Glender has done tours on Abaco, Grand Bahama, New Providence, Eleuthera, Exuma, Cat Island and Bimini. Tours vary from half day to full day with birding expeditions. As a tour guide, Glender said that it is crucial to be on time and professionally attired. Tour guides must also be educated about their country’s history. Glender also provides transportation for wedding groups, and can accommodate those with disabilities. The Great Abaco Express’ business hours are 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. allowing for some flexibility. Blessed Treasures
Blessed Treasures is owned by Terran Strachan, and opened its doors for business on Sept. 26, 2017. As a charter company committed to making memorable vacations for its clients, Blessed Treasures offers the following services: captain services, deck hand, charters to see the swimming pigs and stingrays, fishing and snorkeling, island hopping and boat maintenance. Although the business has felt the sluggish effects of the current slow season, Terran said that business overall has been “pretty good.” Sometimes bad weather can be a challenge at times, too. “The weather is bad right now, so that’s the only reason I’m not out in the boat right
now,” he said at the time. “I love meeting people, and I love the ocean. This is my passion, so the best part about what I do is being out on the ocean every day.” Located in Treasure Cay, Blessed Treasures provides four or six-hour charters. This means that charters run from either 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, speak to Terran Strachan at 1 (242) 475-1195; visit the Blessed Treasures Facebook page; or send an e-mail to: blessedtreasures97@gmail.com.
Capt. Mark’s Charters
Captain Mark Carroll of Capt. Mark’s Charters working mainly out of Treasure Cay Marina nowadays, Capt. Mark came to Treasure Cay in 1979 to run a water sport operation at the time. In 1989, he eventually launched into his own business of offering private tours. He also did a brief stint as a commercial fisherman earning the reputation of being able to “think like a fish.” Capt. Mark is fully licensed to conduct both SCUBA and snorkeling trips, and exclusively does private charters offering half day and full-day rates for fishing, diving, beach picnic, island hopping, coral reef and snorkeling. He also customizes trips to No Name Cay also referred to as Piggyville for his clients to see the swimming pigs and stingrays, which he says has undoubtedly put northern Abaco on the map. Historically, No Name Cay used to be an old picnic site where residents of Green Turtle Cay would go to celebrate special occasions and holidays.
“It’s a big attraction,” he said of the swimming pigs as he paused to thank Wade Cash of Sunset Marine & Boat Rentals for the water tower there, and Craig Russell better known as the pig whisperer for helping to supply water and food for the pigs. Typically, his work days begin at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. and end by 4 p.m. Although he has a Web site, capnmarksbungalow.com, and an e-mail address, bahaseaman@gmail.com, most of his business comes from word-ofmouth referrals. On Sundays, Capt. Marks offers a special trip to Nipper’s Beach Bar and Grill and Grabbers Bed, Bar & Grill on Guana Cay leaving around 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. Call Capt. Mark Carroll directly at 1(242) 5517642 to find out more.

Sunset Marine and Boat Rentals
Sunset Marine & Boat Rentals, a company owned by Wade Cash, has been offering boat rental, boat repair and fishing services on Black Sound, Green Turtle Cay since 1999. Outfitted with a large fleet of wellmaintained rental boats, visitors can look forward to an exciting time of exploring the cay itself or discovering surrounding areas. Accordingly, the cruising area for Sunset Marine’s rental boats extends from No Name Cay to Spanish Cay encompassing many uninhabited islands and deserted beaches in between. Their cruising area also extends south to Hope Town, on Elbow Cay, weather permitting. Because of Abaco’s crystal clear waters,

cruising is made easier for those who are novices or more experienced boaters. Activities like fishing, snorkeling, island hopping and beach picnics are just a few of the things Sunset Marine’s staff can arrange. Sunset Marine also lists several superb coral reef sites near Green Turtle Cay on its Web site. Overall, many of the sites vary by appearance, with diverse environments of Elkhorn coral, small coral outcroppings, boulder corals, shallow reefs, hard and soft corals, deep water and beautiful white sandy bottoms and seagrass meadows to provide excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Telephone contacts are: 1(242)365-4634 or 1(772)539-9514. The Web site is: sunsetmarineandboatrentals.com, and e-mail address: sunsetmarinegtc@gmail.com.
Water Toys Boat Rentals & Charters
Water Toys Boat Rentals and Charters owned by Jason and Tanya Wallace opened for business on Great Guana Cay in May 2016 with Captain Jason Wallace and crew at the helm. Water Toys offers full day (7 hours), and half-day (4 hour) tours. On its tour menu, guests have the option of island hopping, reef and deep sea fishing, visits to the swimming pigs, sharks and stingrays, snorkeling, scuba diving, boat rentals, and scuba scooters with private guides. According to Tamara, a staff member,
everything about their tours is done by a staff member to make it as personalized as possible. “We like to make sure the guests have a real personal experience with us, and that they leave having the best time possible while giving them as much knowledge about Abaco as we can,” she expounded. Dive Guana was established by Troy and Maria Albury in 1999, and is a PADI Dive Center on Great Guana Cay. With an incredibly long list of qualifications under his belt, visitors can plan for an enjoyable, safe experience at Dive Guana. Troy is a PADI master scuba diver trainer with more than 1,000 certifications since 1988; he is a PADI emergency first response instructor and equipment repair specialist for SCUBAPRO, SHERWOOD, DACOR and US DIVERS; and in 2000, he graduated from Florida Keys Community College with a degree in Marine Propulsion Technology. Troy is a Bahamas Government Class A boat captain with 30 years of experience in the dive industry. There are three boat captains in total at Dive Guana with Troy operating as the main one to introduce visitors to an amazing world of scuba diving, island hopping or snorkeling. According to Troy, the island hopping adventures generally run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The swimming pigs are most popular among Dive Guana’s tours as well, but there are other areas people enjoy. “Manjack is something special as visitors get to hand feed the turtles and stingrays and see sharks,” Troy filled in. Dive Guana tours generally consist of six to eight people max with tour prices inclusive of snorkel gear the dive itself. Troy explained that the tours are considered 100-percent safe, and can sometimes be weather-dependent. Over the years, he’s enjoyed giving a first-class experience to his clients who travel from all over the world.

Captain Plug’s tours are confined to the beautiful, Bahamian seas with half day (4-5 hours) and full-day (6-8 hour) tours. There’s no fixed itinerary when it comes to his tours, which are determined mostly by the weather or by what his guests decide to do. Tours range from Little Harbour to the south and as far as Manjack Cay in the north consisting of fishing and travelling to No Name Cay to see the famous swimming pigs. Captain Plug’s boat can accommodate six to eight guests, and tours include all fishing and snorkel equipment as well as all beverages consumed onboard the boat (water, soda or beer). If it’s a low-key, yet memorable adventure that you’re searching for, Lincoln Jones knows how to deliver. There’s no business name per se for what he does, which he confirmed by saying, “Just ask for Lincoln Jones.” A local legend of sorts born and raised on Green Turtle Cay, Lincoln, a respected tour guide, has been offering his guests an exciting day of snorkeling and fishing ending with his signature beach picnic where he prepares a savory meal of freshly-caught fish, lobster (when in season), potatoes, salad and assorted drinks for more than 40 years. And it all goes down on location at a protected cove known as “Lincoln Park” at the northern end of Manjack Cay. Lincoln is assisted by his sons, David and Marcus, whom he said he plans to turn the business over to one day although he’s not sure he will fully retire. Guests tend to pet, feed or swim with the ‘rays, turtles and sharks before closing out such an eventful day with Lincoln. “They put meat between their toes, and the stingrays come right up to the shore and suck the meat out of their toes. The sharks will eat right out of your hand, and you can hand feed the turtles, too.” If you happen to visit Abaco, book a trip with Lincoln Jones. His telephone contacts are: 1(242) 365-4223 or 1(242) 458-3668. Lincoln Jones was nominated for the 2017 Cecil Rose Sports and Leisure Cacique award.

Dive Time Tour 2 is designed for those who love deep-sea fishing, and tours are offered as four hour or six-hour tours. Snorkeling and picnicking is reserved for Tour 3, while those who would prefer to go bottom fishing and picnicking would appreciate Tour 4. Meanwhile, Tour 5 encompasses snorkeling, bottom fishing and a picnic, and Tour 6 involves snorkeling the beautiful coral reefs. Tour 7 is for island hopping from Guana Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Hope Town. Spearfishing lobster when in season and fish is what Tour 8 includes, and the final tour package, Tour 9, calls for a visit to the swimming pigs and a tour of Green Turtle Cay. Business hours are “flexible” he said, but normally run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Captain Thomas assured that he is open for business whenever his clients want to go out. Included are 5,000 acres of pine forest – the nesting area and habitat of about 1000 endangered Abaco Parrots. The parrots once lived on as many as seven islands in The Bahamas, but now only exist on Abaco. A similar species is found on Great Inagua. Black Sound Cay National Park, a two-acre mangrove reserve, was established in 1988. It is located on Green Turtle Cay. Although small in size, this national park is an important habitat for waterfowl and other avifauna which winter in the region. The Tilloo Cay Reserve, established in 1990, is an important nesting habitat for seabirds with an approximate size of 11 acres.

ters, The Bahamas largely consists of wetland ecosystems, making them the most important ecosystem in the country. Wetlands, often referred to as swamps or marshes, are areas that are regularly flooded with salt or fresh water, even though they are sometimes permanently or temporarily dry due to tides or arid seasons. Wetlands can either be coastal or inland. Coastal wetlands are influenced by the tides. The plants found here are very salt tolerant and protect the coastline from storm surges and run-off into the sea. Inland wetlands are cutoff from the sea and are more influenced by rainfall, rivers, or ground water. Mangroves are the trees that can be found in these wetland areas. Worldwide, there are over 50 species of mangroves, four of which can be found in The Bahamas.

been cleared. When Customs and Immigration officials come to your vessel, everyone on board must have proof of citizenship and fill out an immigration card. U.S. citizens can present a passport and an official photo I.D., such as a driver’s license or voter’s card. Before leaving The Bahamas, be sure to surrender your copy of the immigration card at the last Bahamian port you visit. If you have a firearm on board, you must declare it on arrival with Customs. You must provide the serial number and manufacturer, plus an exact count of ammunition. You are allowed to have a firearm on your boat, but you cannot take it off unless you have a permit from the Bahamian police ahead of time. Weapons must be under lock and key at all times. Any infraction of this law is dealt with severely.
Entry Fees
Cruising fees of $150 for boats up to 35 feet in length and $300 for boats over 35 feet will be valid for two entries during a 90-day period. This covers a vessel with four persons or fewer. The fee covers the cruising permit, fishing permit, Customs and Immigration charges and the $25 per person departure tax for up to three persons. Each additional person above four is charged a $25 departure tax (for each addition-
al person above four departing Freeport, Grand Bahama Island). If you plan to stay longer than 12 months, special arrangements must be made with Bahamas Customs and Immigration.
Permits
You can receive fishing permits from Customs officials at any of our 32 ports of entry. Fishing gear is restricted to hook and line and you’re allowed to fish six rods at a time.

Several times in the year, the people of Abaco get together for 5K running challenges. The challenge is to run or walk 5 kilometres, all to raise funds with the aid of sponsors. There were several 5K events that took place on Abaco in 2015. The Anglican Church hosted a 5K in October. Also the Christian Counseling Center hosted a 5K and optional 10K in November of 2013. With the help of sponsors and an entrance fee, each challenge was a success to raise money for their organizations. Both of the associations hope to host the same event annually.

Shifting Tides: The Ever-Changing Plant and Animal Communities of The Bahamas. Inspired by the discovery and science behind exceptionally well-preserved fossils of prehistoric wildlife found in The Bahamas, this museum exhibit showcases how the natural environment has changed and continues to change with the arrival of people to the islands. The exhibit features fossils of animals that once existed in abundance on the islands, such as the terrestrial Cuban crocodile, Albury’s tortoise and Ingraham’s hutia, all of which are either extirpated from Abaco Island or extinct. Visitors will learn of the uniqueness of Bahamian ecosystems and how cultural practices can have lasting effects on the environment. The showcase aims to motivate and inspire visitors to act by learning, respecting and conserving environmental resources. Our Beautiful “Gifts From The Sea” We are told that Cherokee Sound’s Sea Shell Museum is the only museum dedicated exclusively to shells in all The Bahamas. We also know that many of these shells, clams in par-
National Museum of The Bahamas Natural History Exhibit ticular, buried under sand at the bottom of the sea, can live as long as 200 years and some up to 500 years (that is if they are not dug up by beachcombers and sea shell collectors). At one time shells were used in bartering as a form of money. Now you are more likely to see them in jewelry or on display as a decoration. In addition, the museum also has a variety of sea urchins, from shark eggs to sea pancakes. They also live a very long life, but sadly when the creature inside dies it leaves behind a very fragile skeleton. Cherokee has opened their museum to showcase some of our most beautiful specimens. However, the museum does not exclusively showcase just Bahamian Shells but the collection includes some from other parts of the world. The Museum opened on the 15th of April, 2017 and guest have also come from over the world, from Australia to Sweden,
South Africa to The Yukon and everywhere in between and they have all been amazed at the shells we have been able to collect to display in the museum. It would be worth your while to visit Little Cherokee and see the museum. It is always open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. and admission is Free. They are located under the telecommunication’s tower. We hope to see you there.
Marina Information Customs Procedures
Upon entering The Bahamas, the captain of a vessel must take the vessel to an authorized port. The vessel must first clear customs prior to any crew coming ashore or the unloading or loading of any cargo. The boat’s Temporary Cruising Permit is for one year from date of entry and may be renewed for up to two further years if desired by written application to Bahamas Customs, Nassau, prior to expiration and payment of $500 per year. To leave your boat in The Bahamas permanently, you must pay an import duty of 10% for vessels of any size. Since there is no income tax in The Bahamas, there is usually a 35% duty, plus shipping costs, added to most consumer goods. If you experience anything contrary to this, call Comptroller of Customs in Nassau at 242-302-3302.
Immigration Procedures
No person is to land in The Bahamas from a foreign territory without permission of an immigration officer. All vessels must be landed at an authorised port of entry. Destination Abaco 33

Swimming with the Pigs
Like their population, local and worldwide attraction for the swimming pigs of No Name Cay, Abaco – or Piggyville as it’s been designated – has grown by leaps and bounds. Unlike their close relatives that reside in Abaco’s dense pine forests, some narrowly escaping the whiz of hunters’ bullets while others have the misfortune of being captured and slaughtered, the pigs of Piggyville live fearlessly and regally on an island where tranquility abounds. Take it from me, Miss Piggy from Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show, has nothing on the swimming pigs of Abaco! They are celebrities in their own right drawing people from all over the island –

and the world – to meet them up close and personal during their guided tours to the cay. The pigs are quite sociable and friendly paddling out to greet visitors in the water as their boats pull up, long snouts high in the air as their hooves tread water. They interact with their special guests, appreciatively sampling the food they bring and reward them with a few quick, memorable snapshots of their time spent together. A word of caution, though, because the bigger pigs have been known to inadvertently bite or gouge visitors with their tusks! Now with a sizeable population of about 60 pigs, the Abaco swimming pigs are protected by Bahamian law and by the Ministry of Tourism. Most importantly, they have captured the hearts of the people of Abaco (particularly Green Turtle Cay residents), who support the upkeep of these fuzzy, porcine inhabitants with food and water to ensure that they remain healthy, happy and the main attraction on Abaco.

Carleton Point at Treasure Cay
This spot was the founding settlement of Abaco and is located on the northeast peninsula of what is now Treasure Cay beach. Six hundred American Loyalists, built the settlement in 1783 migrating to The Bahamas because of their allegiance to Great Britain after the American Revolution. It was named Carleton Point after Sir Guy Carleton, a British 36

military commander of North America stationed in New York. However, in 1785, a hurricane struck the settlement, and it was later deserted. Archaeologists have uncovered remains of the Loyalist settlement and in September 1983 a bronze plaque was officially unveiled to commemorate the site. Plans are to construct a national monument and tourist attraction here.
Cholera Graveyard
In the 1850s a dark cloud covered the community of Hope Town when residents were exposed to the cholera epidemic. This highly contagious and incurable disease spread rapidly through the community resulting in 100 lives being lost. Although grief stricken by the tragic lost, the community rallied together and assigned a burial site for their loved ones. Today the graveyard remains in existence at its original site, but with no gravestones marking the graves. Preserving this part of their history allows visitors and locals to pay their respect to the lives lost. Visitors can pick up a booklet with information on the location and some historical facts at Vernon’s Grocery in Hope Town.
Abaco Neem
Native Bahamian, Nick Miaoulis founded Abaco Neem in 1993. After initially being inter-
ested in Neem for timber, he began to realize its health benefits and his vision became more focused on health care. Along with assistance from Albert Albury, Nick was able to establish the Abaco Neem Farm on 120 acres of land near Casuarina Point. Today there are 6,500 Neem trees on the farm, and Abaco Neem’s health care, body care, pet care, and home and garden products are sold all over The Bahamas. The farm is set up to provide tours for any who would like to visit. Please visit www.abaconeem.com to schedule your tour today. Tel: (242) 225-1745 or 367-4117.

those who played a significant role in the history of Abaco - the Loyalists and their slaves, who despite hard times, survived and made a new life in The Bahamas. The garden contains 24 busts of prominent Bahamians (representing various Bahamian islands), surrounding the life-size bronze figures of two girls, one black and one white. One child holds a conch shell, an important Bahamian symbol, while the other holds the Union Jack, the flag of Great Britain. Artist James Mastin sculptured the busts and two large figures. The figures represent a new beginning in The Bahamas for the thousands of Loyalists of the American Revolution in 1783.
The Bahamas Underground
We are The Bahamas’ only technical training and adventure facility dedicated to cave diving. Our program includes a variety of guided daily trips, for a maximum of two divers, to the finest blue holes and spectacular underwater caves on Abaco, as well as excursions to other islands of The Bahamas. Accommodations can also be arranged and equipment is available for rental. Mr. Brian Kakuk (242) 359-6128 www. bahamasunderground.com Located in New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay, the original jail in Green Turtle Cay was a twostory structure that was built in the mid-19th century. However, during a 1932 hurricane, the jail was severely damaged, resulting in the upper level of the jail being destroyed. Following that, the jail was not rebuilt, but the Architectural Preservation Foundation of Green Turtle Cay has made the jail one of the many historical features of this community.
Monument to Fishermen
In October of 1988, the community of Cherokee Sound erected a monument dedicated to the Cherokee fishermen and their smacks (locallymade fishing boats). The people of this community once thrived from the fishing industry and distinguished themselves by carrying five sails rather than the usual seven on their fishing smacks. Scripted on the monument is information dating back from the mid 1800’s to the late 1950’s that includes the history of the fishing industry in that community, the names of the fishermen who drowned during a fishing trip, and the names of the smacks operating during that century.

Mermaid Reef protected by the local community for decades.
Tucked alongside Pelican Shores in Marsh Harbour, is one of Abaco’s hidden gems: Mermaid Reef. Mermaid Reef is a small patch reef located in shallow water, making it an ideal spot for beginner snorkelers or those looking to escape wind and weather on the ocean side reefs. Mermaid Reef has been protected by the local community for decades. The reef also falls within the 200 yard limit of the shoreline, so spearfishing is prohibited there by Bahamian law. This means that there is an abundance of fish to see when you go there! Look out for beautifully coloured fish, such as parrotfish, sergeant majors, fairy basslets, and blue tangs. Nassau Grouper can also be spotted here, a Bahamian delicacy! Other animals you may see are spiny sea urchins, sea anemones, sea cucumbers and sea stars. Coral diversity is low, however the corals that are found there seem to be very resilient in the face of extreme summer temperatures in the shallow nearshore water. Researchers are looking into this in the hopes of helping other coral reefs survive high water temperatures. Mermaid Reef is also a test site for coral restoration and you will see a number of artificial reefs with coral frag-

ments planted on them! Some naturally occurring species of coral that you may recognize when snorkeling are boulder star coral, grooved brain coral, and sea fans. Friends of the Environment (FRIENDS) is a Bahamian non-profit organization that was established in 1988 with the mission to preserve and protect marine and terrestrial environments to achieve sustainable living for the wildlife and people of Abaco, Bahamas. To help achieve this, FRIENDS focuses on community education. Mermaid Reef has become an important field trip site where many local students have their first opportunity to put on a mask and see a coral reef in person. FRIENDS also partners with the Perry Institute for Marine Science, to help facilitate research and incorporate new information into education initiatives.
When visiting, you can also help protect Mermaid Reef! Use a mooring instead of anchoring near the reef Do not fish on the reef Do not step on or touch corals as they can break or become susceptible to disease Pick up any litter you see Encourage others to use the same “Coral Courtesies!

Marsh Harbour
The Gateway Connection to the Abacos by Caniskha Alexander
You’ve arrived....
We welcome you to the capital of Abaco and its commercial hub: Marsh Harbour. But, wait! You will need some information that will be beneficial to you during your stay. Marsh Harbour is also the third largest city of The Bahamas, and more importantly, it is the location that connects Abaco’s main settlements and cays essentially serving as a gateway to all that the island has to offer. Home to approximately 7,000 residents, Marsh Harbour was founded by American Loyalists in 1784. Laying claim to its sizeable portion 62

of the 120-mile long chain of islands and cays that span across 650 miles, you’ll come to understand why Marsh Harbour continues to be a major tourist attraction. In recent years, Marsh Harbour has received upgrades to its airport, which is now called the Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in tribute to the late Capt. Leonard Thompson, a son of Hope Town, who was a war veteran and aviation pioneer. Accordingly, the Bahamas Government Complex now hosts most of the government departments with a few departments still located in office spaces along Don Mackay Boulevard. Possibly one of the most exciting
upgrades, the Marsh Harbour Government Clinic has earned state-of-the-art status with a new location and name as the Marsh Harbour Healthcare Centre. Of course, there are countless businesses and services to choose from for our visitors that are conveniently located in downtown Marsh Harbour from banks to hardware stores, grocery stores, restaurants, medical facilities, services stations, full-service marinas, souvenir stores and everything in between. Although plans were made to install a new traffic light at the intersection by K & S Auto Station, Marsh Harbour – in fact Abaco – still only has one traffic light to service the entire island. To the east of the traffic light is the main restaurant and resort strip with private homes interspersed throughout as well as Albury’s Ferry and G & L Transportation ferry services located at the Crossing Beach. The Crossing Beach is the only public beach available in the area. Not to worry because there are many fun options available to our visitors. There are car rental companies that have vehicle and bike rentals available for you to explore the island, or perhaps
you can try your hand out on a day out fishing with an expert fishing guide. What better way to unwind than a day out in the boat with spectacular views of our water? Try out boat charter companies like the Moorings, Cruise Abaco Boat Charter, Sea Horse Boat Rentals or El Dorado Boat Rentals. Speaking of the Moorings, they recently partnered with Tropic Ocean Airways to introduce a “Fly & Sail” program offering air and sea adventures aboard Tropic Ocean Airways’ seaplane service and the Moorings’ luxurious catamarans. The fun doesn’t stop there. You’re in luck if you’ve booked your stay at Abaco Beach Resort because this popular location has myriad outdoor activities just for resort guests that include sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking and tennis lessons to name a few. There’s also nature tours provided by Abaco Eco Kayak Tours and Rentals and Lucayan Nature Tours – both excellent choices for exploring Abaco’s unique natural environment. We’re also mindful that your visit to Marsh Harbour is simply to enjoy the Destination Abaco

solitude and peacefulness of island life. Whatever the reason, this great city is ideal for every experience you have in mind. Now don’t worry if you do not get to do everything you set out to do on your first visit. Abaco historically draws a large number of repeat visitors and second homeowners annually. So like them, we look forward to seeing you on your next visit.

Hope Town, Elbow Cay
A Destination Rich in History and Fun!
by Caniskha Alexander
Renowned for the Elbow Reef Lighthouse and Wyannie Malone Museum, Hope Town maintains an enviable status as one of Abaco’s most wellloved destinations. Situated on Elbow Cay, Hope Town has a population of about 600 people, and was co-founded in 1785 by Wyannie Malone, a widow from South Carolina with four children who sought safe refuge after the American Revolution. During that time, fishing and salvaging shipwrecks were the main sources of livelihood for Elbow Cay’s residents. A stop at the Wyannie Malone Museum gives a glimpse of the settlement’s rich and diverse history through memorabilia, artifacts, old pho-
tos and documents. During the month of March, an Annual Heritage Day is planned by the Wyannie Malone Museum as a fundraiser featuring art, interactive display and exhibits, historical booths, games and food. Another place to visit is the Byrle Patterson Memorial Garden, which is named in honour of one of Hope Town’s outstanding citizens, Byrle Malone Patterson. A seventh generation descendant of Hope Town’s founding mother, Mrs. Patterson helped with the establishment of the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum. Memorial stepping stones and a variety of local flora adorn the garden, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean offering an incredibly breathDestination Abaco

taking view. And what a view the Elbow Reef Lighthouse also provides. As one of the most recognizable historical landmarks in the country, the candy-striped Elbow Reef Lighthouse is one of the last operational kerosenefueled lighthouses in the world. Built in 1864 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service, the candy-cane lighthouse towers above the high-water line with 101 steps leading to the lantern room at the top. The Elbow Cay lighthouse was among 11 lighthouses built throughout The Bahamas to improve navigation for seafarers, to decrease shipwrecks and to also warn ships away from Elbow Reef, and it is presently one of three remaining kerosene-burning and manually-operated lighthouses. Hope Town is not only known for its fascinating history alone. There’s also a fun side to this close-

knitted community characterized by quaint, colourful homes and cottages reminiscent of Loyalist architecture where people frequently travel to for vacation. Others travel to Hope Town daily by ferry to work at the local businesses there. The preferred mode of transportation are bicycles and golf carts in the main town center. The Big Hill Box Cart Derby is worth mentioning as it draws scores of people annually each November on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Wellcrafted box carts are constructed by competitors who race down “Big Hill”. The winner is bestowed the title of “King of the Hill”, until the following year. Many of the resorts, restaurants and marinas host events on their properties for guests and for the public to be a part of. There are art shows, concerts, workshops and other fundraising events
are also available. Hope Town Canvas has grown in popularity as a gift and specialty shop. Another new business, Abaco Paddleboards offers waterskiing, jet skiing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, boat tours and water sports and outdoor activities and tours.

Green Turtle Cay
A Community of History by Kristen Pearce Photo by Rohonda Pearce
Green Turtle Cay is one of the earliest settlements in Abaco, and one that keeps its deep heritage alive. With two safe harbours on the island, White and Black Sound, and with many inlets for hiding, this cay was a popular spot for pirating in the early days. It has been said that famous pirates, such as Mary Reed, Anne Bonny, and Calico Jack were once associated with the island. The current settlement, however, was founded in 1784 and has deep African and Loyalist roots. During the 19th century, at the peak of the pineapple, wrecking, bootlegging, and shark fishing industries, it was considered the largest city in Abaco. It was also during this time that many of the residents moved to Key West, later making the two cities sister cities in 1977. 70

Even though many of the houses were dismantled and shipped to Key West, while others were destroyed in hurricanes, there are still quite a few of the original clapboard houses still standing over 150 years old. The population has dwindled over the years, and there are currently around 500 residents. However, the locals come to together often to keep the sense of community and the history of the settlement alive. Each year, in the month of May, there is an Island Roots Heritage Festival, which the locals and tourists alike celebrate all the history of the island. This Festival spans over three days, and it offers great activities such as music, singing, maypole, plays, face painting, games, comic shows, artifacts, souve-
nirs, the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, Junkanoo, and wonderful Bahamian food. The island is also famous for its Green Turtle Cay Marching Band and Junkanoo Celebration, which is held on New Year’s Day. On a visit to Green Turtle Cay, you can’t help but notice the history all
around the island. Along with the many original houses, there is still the original jail, cemetery, and library. Located in the town area is the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture garden. This garden was created by Alton Lowe, a local artist, in remembrance of the original settlers of the island. There

are bronze busts of the Loyalists and the forefathers of the development. For a better glimpse of the island during the olden days, visit the Alton Lowe Museum, and Vert’s Model Ships. Even though the island is deeply rooted in its history, it still offers a great deal for locals and tourists today. With three grocery stores, two hardware stores, and a liquor store, the island is equipped with almost all the necessities for island life. Although there is no doctor on the island, there is a clinic with a nurse available. There are several marinas and clubs on the island that provide accommodations, rentals and restaurants. There are also private accommodations provided around the island, such as rental homes, villas, and cottages. Even though it is possible to walk the settlements, golf carts are available for rent.
On the journey, dine at one of the many local restaurants. Be sure to also stop in at the local bars and clubs on the weekends to hear the famous Gully Roosters perform authentic Bahamian music. Like every Bahamian Island, there are beautiful views of the crystal clear waters and scenic beaches all around the island.

Man-O-War Cay
Residents of Man-O-War Preserve Its Maritime History by Caniskha Alexander
If Man-O-War Cay could be credited for one main thing, most would agree that boat building would top the list. As far back as the 1880s, Man-O-War Cay acquired the title of “Boat Building Capital of The Bahamas” as its main industry. The tradition of boat building lives on at Albury Brothers Boat Builders Factory and Joe’s Studio where seaworthy vessels are skillfully crafted. The sailing dinghies, speed boat and half model boat models are most sought after. In the past, Abaco Pine was used to make the fishing and sailing vessels because it was grown and harvested 76

locally. Gradually, other types of wood along with fiberglass material were incorporated. These “Abaco dinghies” as they were called became the mainstay of the fishing and commercial industry in The Bahamas. Preserving Man-O-War’s rich history, the Man-O-War Heritage Museum is located in a building that is more than 100 years old. It showcases the superior craftsmanship of Man-O-War boat builders. Among them was William H. Albury better known as Uncle Will would was described as having a “keen eye and detailed workmanship,” which helped solidify his name in history.
Interestingly, the museum introduced a wonderful concept to the community with the introduction of a nonprofit coffee shop in February 2018. Now known as the Man-O-War Heritage Museum & Coffee Shop operated by Billy and Chana Albury, customers enter a beautiful space that has floors made from Abaco Pine as they browse the delicious display of homemade cinnamon buns, doughnuts, cookies and cakes that are donated by local bakers. All proceeds from the coffee shop go directly to the museum. Every two years, “Sojer Day” is celebrated among the residents of Man-OWar. During the ceremony, the contributions of Man-O-War’s ancestors are celebrated. Referred to as “Sojers,” there are about 350 residents who live in Man-OWar year-round. Like many of Abaco’s communities a number of second homeowners reside there in their vacation homes. There are two harbours complimented by a public dock and the ManO-War Marina.
Visitors can head over to Andy Albury’s workshop, Joe’s Studio, Sally’s Seaside Boutique and Albury’s Sail Shop for locally handcrafted gift and souvenir items that draw inspiration from the cay’s maritime heritage. Man-O-War now allows the sale of alcohol, and visitors can dine at restaurants like Dock & Dine Restaurant, Hibiscus Café, Take-Aways and Sheila’s Deli. Unlike the other cays on Abaco, Man-O-War is more family-oriented and an ideal place for quiet and relaxation. A Man-O-War Flea Market is held annually, and residents from the mainland come over to take advantage of the wonderful products they find at incredible prices.

Great Guana Cay
A Forgotten Treasure
by Kristen Pearce
Great Guana Cay is a small, quiet, and quaint cay. Even though the cay stretches for seven miles, there are less than 150 residents. In recent years Guana Cay is most known for Nipper’s Bar and Grill, which hosts Abaco’s biggest parties on Sunday afternoons, and Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club, which is the Bahamas’ most exclusive members-only community. What many people do not know (or remember) about Guana Cay is that in years past it was a destination spot for cruise ships. In fact, this attraction has become somewhat of an urban legend because people wonder how true the story is since there is little evidence left. In the 1989 Premeire Cruise Lines 78
Destination Abaco
decided to build an interactive stop for their cruises. Premeire was known for their big red ships and became Disney’s partnered cruise line, which focused on cruises for families. The northwest section of Guana Cay, known as Baker’s Bay, was where this facility was then built. Because of the shallow waters that surround Guana Cay, an underwater channel was dredged to allow the ship to access the bay. The experience on this cruise stop was definitely a unique one. “Treasure Island” was interactive experience, which featured pirates that “vacationed” on this island who became angry at the cruise ship and passengers for intruding.
During dinner on the ship, loud noises were heard all around and the captain would announce that the ship has been taken over by pirates. At this point Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, and Tinkerbell would storm into the dining room and kidnap several passengers, putting them in chains, and taking them to the island. At that time the captain would announce that they were going to rescue those kidnapped and ask for volunteers to help them. What the passengers didn’t know was that there was a midnight buffet set up for them on the island. The passengers were given trinkets to exchange for their “kidnapped” friends ad family. The whole thing was of course staged and made for a fun, interactive experience for the passengers. The island offered a very different experience that couldn’t be found anywhere else. These experiences also included sand bars, gift shops, seclud-
ed beaches, parasailing, and sea animal enclosures (I personally remember they had dolphins – I love dolphins). Disney characters would roam the island, torches would line the beach, and guests were given the option to camp on the beach at night. It was an amazing highlight for the cruise line. However, it only lasted a few short years for a few reasons.
