Project confluence Design of a business park at new town, Kolkata FINAL YEAR THESIS 2023

C O N F L U E N C E is an architectural concept that seamlessly blends the timeless charm of the ‘Chala temple’ architecture of Bengal with contemporary design principles. This concept aims to create a state-of-the-art business park that not only embraces modern functionality but also remains deeply rooted in the cultural and historical context of Bengal. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive Chala form, the facades of this building exhibit a harmonious integration of traditional elements and contemporary aesthetics. The bold curves, reminiscent of the Chala temple architecture are reinterpreted and incorporated into the post-modernist design language, resulting in a visually striking and culturally significant structure. The Confluence business park stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of tradition and innovation, paying homage to the rich heritage of Bengal while providing a dynamic and forwardthinking environment for businesses to thrive.

The Phaistos Disc (also spelled Phaistos Disk, Phaestos Disc) is a disk of fired clay from the Minoan palace of Phaistos on the island of Crete, possibly dating to the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age (second millennium BC). The disk is about 15 cm (5.9 in) in diameter and covered on both sides with a spiral of stamped symbols. Its purpose and its original place of manufacture remain disputed. It is now on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion. The disc was discovered in 1908 by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in the Minoan palace-site of Phaistos, and features 241 tokens, comprising 45 distinct signs, which were apparently made by pressing hieroglyphic "seals" into a disc of soft clay, in a clockwise sequence spiraling toward the center of the disk. The Phaistos Disc captured the imagination of amateur and professional archaeologists, and many attempts have been made to decipher the code behind the disc's signs. While it is not clear that it is a script, most attempted decipherments assume that it is; most additionally assume a syllabary, others an alphabet or logography.

The architectural concept for the resort in Ninh Binh has been formed by drawing inspiration from the unique Karst landscape that characterizes the region. The breathtaking topography of Ninh Binh, sculpted over time by water erosion on limestone formations, served as a significant influence in shaping the design approach. Drawing a parallel between the fluidity of water and the beauty of the surrounding natural environment, trochoid curve functions have been incorporated to define the geometry of the roofs.. The trochoid curve, known for its resemblance to water waves, provided a visually striking and harmonious representation of the water's influence on the landscape. Incorporation of these wave forms into the roof design, the aim was to create an organic and immersive architectural experience that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding natural beauty of Ninh Binh. The trochoid-inspired roofs not only enhance the aesthetics of the resort but also evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility. The undulating rooflines mimic the gentle movement of water, creating an inviting and soothing ambiance for guests. Additionally, the design approach fosters a strong connection between the resort and its natural surroundings, reinforcing the idea of sustainability and harmony with the environment.
