PREFACE The hum and hustle of marketplaces starting from the morning to evening gives vibrancy to the city. The daily intense battle where thousands are exchanging products and the small conversations that take place, the hawkers selling the products and the local public buying their weekly vegetables at crowded squares and street adds to the cityscape. These are the visions engraved in one’s mind when we think about markets. India is an agricultural country and the economy of India dependent on the agricultural business mainly. 60% to 70% of Indians rely on the agricultural of India. According to the census 2011, India will add another 404 million people into its urban population by 2050, this prediction will expand the demand of agriculture and it’s trading which is already in a pure disorder in India. Marketplaces are the most used public place in any city; it is used and visited by people of different ages and gender. These markets are the roots of every city’s culture which only adds value to it. Marketplaces are defined as quintessential public spaces, providing not only access to fresh produce but also functioning as important social infrastructures. “Markets are remnants of the past lodged in the heart of modern city”- Black, Rachel 2012 From this prediction this thesis is also aiming to redevelop a market located in Mangalore city, Karnataka, India. This redevelopment will provide a better designing and built environment for trading and buying activity; the main purpose of the project, with good environment for commercial activities also. Keywords: Market, Marketplace, Vendors, Arrangement, Human, Services, Vegetable, Fish, Meat, Fruit, Flower, Kudla, Mangalore

1 SYNOPSIS Marketplaces are the most used public place in any city; it is used and visited by people of different ages and gender. These markets are the roots of every city’s culture which only adds value to it. Marketplaces are defined as quintessential public spaces, providing not only access to fresh produce but also functioning as important social infrastructures. “Markets are remnants of the past lodged in the heart of modern city”- Black, Rachel 2012

“What came first? The city or the market? It is not always clear but historically the development of towns and markets is often linked.”- Black, Rachel 2012 The same case is taken in this design thesis which is a redevelopment of the central market in Mangalore, Karnataka, India under the smart city initiative of Mangalore city. Located in the city center from the year 1960 needs to be redeveloped and redesign which can unite in a modern world with modern technology but still gives sight of Mangalore’s roots.

Vision The vision for the redevelopment of the Market is to design a space to showcase the indigenous offerings of the city. The overarching objective is to expand the marketplace from Mangalore city to the state of Karnataka and eventually to become prominent in the context of the country. Methodology To analyze the future need of the market with existing situation the study was conducted in different parts.

Objective The project is proposed by the MANGALURU SMART CITY LIMITED (MSCL) for redevelopment with some objectives like; 1. Redevelop the Central Market to be an iconic landmark for the city of Mangalore. 2. Align the right commercial uses that can work in balance with the Central Market retail to make the new development relevant with respect to the real estate, community and the social context of the city. 3. Provide a one stop destination for the fresh indigenous produce that the city is proud of. 4. Relocate the Fish Market and integrate them in the new, more organized, cleaner, hygienic and technology driven facility. 4. Provide the city of Mangalore with a facility that transcends the conventional retail experience towards a holistic culturally enriched recreational and retail experience for the visitors. 5. 2 PROJECT INTRODUCTION Vision of Market: The project is all about redeveloping a existing market which is in the city centre with heavy traffic and mismanagement. This redeveloped market includes areas like flower, fruit and vegetable market, meat market, fish market and commercial area for revenue generation of market. The salient features of the proposed redevelopment project are: 1. A development that integrates the two segregated parcels of land of the current market into one cohesive urban built form. 2. A state-of-the-art iconic market on the west that provides a space for the existing grocery and produce vendors on site, as well as rehabilitates the current fish market as well as all vendors at the Old Bus stand. A commercial complex on the east that functions in synergy with the market to draw in more visitors to the development. 3. An effective zoning plan that considers the social dynamics at play and clearly distinguishes the space for the sale of non-vegetarian produce from the vegetarian produce within the market. 4. An open public space that makes the market more than a regular commercial complex and provides the opportunity for enhanced experiences for the citizens of the city and outside. 5. Exploring and analyzing the possibility of inclusion of following features/ buildings/ conveniences as part of the Redevelopment: •

Recreational public

zone Gourmet produce market

Retail and commercial component

6. Adequate off-street parking spaces that supports the proposed market and commercial development.
