STORY LINES
Not much is expected from the Bluefield College women’s basketball team. That is, except from the Rams themselves. When the Mid-South Conference released its preseason poll, the Rams — much like the Bluefield men — were selected for last place in their first season in what might be the best NAIA league in the nation. Bluefield opens its season on Friday by hosting Virginia Intermont at the Dome Gymnasium at 6 p.m in the first of three games at the 2012 Wendy’s Classic. The Rams will also host Allen (S.C.) on Saturday while Allen and Virginia Intermont will match up on Sunday. The Rams first MSC contest will be on Nov. 15 against Georgetown, which finished third in the nation last season.
NAIA TOP-25
Five Mid-South Conference teams are ranked in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll. The five teams are the most from any one conference in the poll. Shawnee State University -- the preseason favorite to win the Mid-South Conference -- is No. 2 in the national poll after receiving 269 voting points from the national raters. The Bears finished last season with a 28-6 record and was ranked sixth in the final national poll.
