The Rams entered the season as the last place team as selected by the Mid-South Conference Coaches Preseason poll while the Tigers entered the year as the top team in the MSC and the third-ranked NAIA Division I squad. Bluefield College is led by a pair of 20-plus point scorers in senior center Byron Carpenter and junior guard Kearsten Marion. Carpenter a 6-foot-7 Virginia Beach, Va., native was last year’s Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year and has picked up where he left off with back-to-back strong performances. He recorded a double-double against Virginia University of Lynchburg with 24 points and 13 rebounds before scoring 23 points to go along with 9 rebounds in the Rams win over cross-town rivial Bluefield State. Marion a Houston, Texas, opened the season with a 25 point performance against VUL before pouring in 27 in the Bluefield State victory as he is averaging a career best 26 points per game. Last year the 5-foot-8 guard scored 16.7 points per game in 35 games but scored a career-high 36 points in the Rams 83-76 win over Virginia Intermont. Sophomores Andrew Wilson and Deante Hallums have scored double figures this season but average 9.5 and 7.0 points per game respectively. The 6-foot-5 Hallums ranks 9th in NAIA in offensive rebounds per game (4.0) and 43rd in Assist/Turnover Ration (3.0) while 5-foot-7 Wilson collects 4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. The third ranked Tigers are led by three-time NAIA All-American Vic Moses but feature six double-digit scorers including Moses (17.25), Monty Wilson (13.75), Mychal Parker (13.0), Deondre McWhorter (11.75), Garel Craig (11.25), and Allen Thomas (10.75). McWhorter a 6-foot-8 forward pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds and leads the team in rebounds per game (8.0) but 6-foot-9 Marc Montavius matched McWhorter’s high of 14 and averages 7.25 per game. Hackensack, N.J., native Garel Craig ranks second in the nation in assists per game (9.75) but also turns the ball over an average of six times a game including a 11 in 40 minutes against Miami-Middletown.
