NEXT GAME AT MITCHELL * The Rams return to Mitchell Stadium when BC hosts the Eagles of Faulkner University on Saturday, Sept. 15 (1 p.m.) -- this will follow the Ram’s first road trip on Sept. 8 when they head to Grayson, Ky., to face the Knights of Kentucky Christian. The Knights who finished 4-7 overall and fourth in the Mid-South East Division (2-3) a year ago opened the year with a 27-20 overtime win at home against Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raders in just their third year of football received votes in the NAIA Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
YOUTH FACES * Bluefield College’s week-two depth chart (as of Aug. 30) features 53 freshman (25 first-teamers and 28 back-ups). Overall, Bluefield’s varsity roster features 66 freshman players.
GAME 2 September 1, 2012 Mitchell Stadium, Bluefield, W.Va. The Rams opened their first season after 71 years with a back-andforth opening half against the University of Pikeville (Ky.). Bluefield opened the scoring in the opening quarter when junior quarterback GREG HAMPTON found MATT HOLLANDSWORTH for a 10-yard touchdown reception with 3:03 left. After back-to-back scores by the Bears, Hampton found RODRELL SMITH for a 33-yard touchdown pass to level the score 14-14 with 9:49 remaining in the opening half. A Hampton miscue allowed Trey Bartlett to race 20 yards the other direction to give Pikeville a 21-14 lead with just under seven minutes left. JOSH WELLS carried the ball over the line knotting the game a 21s when he dashed through a gap on the left side with 1:40 remaining till the break. The second half belonged to the Bears as Trevor Hoskins started three consecutive UPike scores with a pass to Shawntez Johnson under three minutes into the second half. Behind a great line Hampton responded with his third TD pass and second to Smith when the 6-foot-1 Arrington, Va., native took the 16yard pass for pay dirt ending the game with a 42-28 loss to UPike.

WALTER SCHULZ: ANOTHER HERO FROM BLUEFIELD COLLEGE FOOTBALL
By: Chris Shoemaker Bluefield College announced in the summer of 2010 that it would be reviving its football program for the first time since 1941. Since then, coaches have been hired, players recruited, and an exhibition season completed to prepare the new Rams for official intercollegiate play in the fall of 2012. As new plays and players surface on the football field for the first time in 70 years, so do the memories and stories of heroes past. One such hero: the late Walter Herman Schulz, a vital cog as a fullback for Coach Tony Lotito’s single wing offense in 1941. Schulz came to Bluefield College from College Point, New York, where his parents, Anna and Paul Schulz, owned and operated a tool and die business. He fully expected to work in the family enterprise and not go to college, since his parents didnÕt think higher education was necessary to continue the family tradition. But, Bluefield College came calling with a scholarship offer to play football, and Schulz couldnÕt refuse. He quickly fell in love with the private Christian college in the scenic Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia. He studied engineering, sang in the college choir, and was elected president of the freshman class. On the football field, he helped lead BC to a 4-4 season in the fall of 1941, including wins over Rio Grande University, Hiwassee College, and Tennessee Wesleyan College. While just a freshman, he was a key, often lauded component of the Bluefield offense. “We have a scrapbook with his newspaper clippings from his high school days on through Bluefield,” said Schulz’s son, Paul Schulz. “One article from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (April 4, 1941) has a photo of Dad opening a hole for Lightfoot with Frank Lotito sprawled on the ground to the right. Another article talked of the players
Walter Schulz blocks for James Lightfoot in 1941
who lettered, and my Dad was one of them as a freshman.” In fact, after just one season at Bluefield College, Schulz was offered an opportunity to play professional football with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he declined the invitation to return to BC to play for the Ramblin Reds. “Dad loved Bluefield,” said Paul Schulz about his father’s experience at BC. “He loved the atmosphere there. Each summer as we visited my grandparents in Princeton, West Virginia, he always drove over to the school to walk around and remember his days there.” Unfortunately, his memories were cut short as Uncle Sam came calling before Schulz could continue his football career. Despite great expectations for a successful sophomore season with the likes of Dick Bogdan, Frank Denardo, Rufus Witt, Nelly Frazier and Frank Lotito, Schulz, like most BC football players, was drafted by the United States Army to fight in the Aleutian Islands in World War II. “The fighting there was every bit as terrible as the Pacific Islands, but not talked about as much,” said Paul Schulz. “We have a number of after battle photos showing destroyed Japanese tanks and cannons.” Schulz served three years with the Army, earning the rank of sergeant. His tent mate during his tour of duty: Allen Funt, who became a television producer, director and writer after the war, best known as the creator and host of Candid Camera. In fact, Funt, an artist, sketched a pencil drawing of Schulz in uniform that he signed and that still hangs in Betty Rose Schulz’s den in Princeton, West Virginia. After the war, Schulz returned to Bluefield College in 1947. By then, football was a mere memory at BC, scrapped in 1942 as a result of the lack of male student-athletes who were off fighting the war. But,
Schulz continued his engineering studies and then moved on to Virginia Tech to earn a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. After college, he worked as a chief engineer for Valley Forge Products and a plant superintendent for Atlantic Gear Works, before honoring his parents’ wishes by returning to work for the family business in New York. In fact, he managed the tool and die enterprise until his death in 1971. “My Father passed away when I was just 16 years old,” said Paul Schulz, “but I remembered how fondly he talked about Bluefield College, so I decided to attend there, as well.” Motivated by the fond memories of his father, Paul Schulz attended BC from 1971 to 1973. In addition to his studies, he served as a resident assistant, played varsity tennis, and participated in intramural athletics. He continued his studies at Radford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science before building a career and a family in Saginaw, Texas. “Bluefield was great,” said Paul Schulz about his own experience at BC. “I was a bit wild in those days and then Dean of Men’s Students Dr. Burkert decided to get me straight. After nearly getting thrown out of college the first year, he offered me a resident assistant’s position the next year. I needed the money, and he knew I needed the responsibility. I was very grateful to Dr. Burkert.” While Paul Schulz continued his father’s tradition by attending Bluefield College, his sister, Louann, followed in her dad’s footsteps by attending Virginia Tech. And, as football continues its revival on the BC campus, the only question remaining is, who will continue the Schulz legacy on the gridiron.
CANCER NOT AN OBSTACLE FOR FRYE ON GRIDIRON By Brian Woodson: Bluefield Daily Telegraph
Caleb Frye kicked cancer. Now he’s kicking footballs for Bluefield College. The Lord, as the saying goes, works in mysterious ways. “It is a blessing, honestly I feel like the Lord wants me here and I am just following Him and stepping out on faith and so far it is paying off,” Frye said. “I am enjoying it, it is a blast, the football team is great. We are all getting along really well.” Frye, a backup kicker for the Rams, was on the sidelines last Saturday when Bluefield played its first game since 1941, a 42-28 loss to the University of Pikeville. No one enjoyed it more. “Honestly it was a blessing considering what I have been through and what I have overcome and just to be able to step on his field as a college student and a college athlete,” Frye said. “I never saw that coming and all I could think about is, ‘God, is this really happening right now, thank you so much for what you have done for me.’” Frye has been through more than most. He has a reason for choosing his career path, having survived childhood cancer that had already reached the third of four stages. “That is a lot of the driving force where I want to be a pediatric oncologist,” Frye said. “Just to be able to help the children and give a testimony and let them know that everything is under control.” The 5-foot-7, 135-pound Frye knows all about it. While most children his age on Memorial Day weekend in 1999 were thinking about summer vacation, he was thinking about survival, having been diagnosed at age 7 with a type of lymphoma that attacks the emphatic system, and had infected him in his right groin and the lineage of his stomach. “I had to go through 20 chemo treatments over the course of the year, it was fourstage cancer and they diagnosed me on stage 3 so it had progressed pretty well,” Frye said. “I had 20 chemo treatments and right now I have been in remission for a little over 12 years and I am doing checkups every year now.” Frye endured the treatments and recovered, and even found a bright spot when second grade started in the fall. “What was so cool about that is I was able to ‘go as I please’ from where I was still on treatment so that was, I guess you could say, a plus side,” he said, with a laugh. “If there was a plus side, that could be it, I could go to school whenever I want to.” Frye would go on to have a typical childhood, playing soccer before finally dropping that sport in eighth grade in favor of baseball. Yet, that kicking gene never left
him, and he has worked to get his leg back in shape like it was at Patrick Henry High School in Glade Spring, Va. “Right now I am trying to get the rust off a little bit,” Frye said. “As of right now I am just hanging tight and just enjoying my time here and just trying to get back to where I was back in high school and just working on getting better too.” With the encouragement of friends, Frye attended kicking camps for three years, and developed into an All-Hogoheegee District and All-Region C kicker at Patrick Henry. He also played wide receiver and free safety for the Rebels, with his last two seasons spent under the tutelage of Mike Compton, who is now the offensive line coach at Bluefield College. Cancer has a way of rearing its ugly head again with its victims, and Frye has experienced a scare once since it first appeared all those years ago. “Actually back in my senior year I strained a groin muscle in my left leg and some lymph nodes popped up and that brought a scare on just a little bit,” said Frye, who has kicked field goals as long as 50 yards in practice and 37 yards in games. “In the back of my mind it does reappear sometimes, but I know the Lord has healed me and I know He is going to be taking care of me.” Frye had spent two years at Virginia Highlands Community College with kicking being the furthest thing from his mind until Compton came calling with an offer Frye couldn’t refuse. “After high school I honestly thought it was over with,” Frye said. “I decided I would focus on education, but out of the blue I feel like God opened up the door for me to kick again so here I am.” The offer to kick again at the college level, plus the right major for his career goals proved to be the right mix for Frye. “Going through Highlands I was focused on education and then I found out they have a good biology program (here) with an emphasis on pre-med here and that is the direction I want to go,” he said. “That made the trip up here even more easier to make that choice.” Compton first approached Bluefield College head coach Mike Gravier about adding Frye to the team. “I know he contracted cancer and obviously you don’t worry about the athletic career, you just worry about life at that point,” Gravier said. “I know he came back and he was able to play for Coach Compton at Patrick Henry and he had a nice little career. “He had a chance to kick and did a very good job and that is why Mike recom-
mended we look at him as one of our kickers.” Frye also played offense and defense at Patrick Henry, and learned to tackle football like he did life. “Mike’s biggest concern was he was going to fly down and hit somebody because that was just his mentality,” Gravier said. “He is one of those kids that didn’t let something like cancer slow him down or change his life, he didn’t sit around and feel sorry for himself and that is really the kind of kid that he is.” Frye is now backing up Mikel Hawks as a kicking specialist for the Rams, and Gravier likes his contributions not only on kickoffs, but with his ability to place the ball. He is now working to make his leg stronger after limitations on his ability to lift heavy weights was removed last summer. “I am very happy because now I can make my leg stronger,” said Frye, a left-footed kicker who does everything else righthanded. Frye speaks openly of his faith in God, a relationship that began a year before cancer entered his life. “Actually I got saved at 6 years old, I got saved on Palm Sunday of 1998 and then a year later I am here battling,” said Frye, who will turn 21 on Sept. 13. “At that young age you don’t really know too much in depth of it, but at the time I knew that there was Christ and I accepted Him. “A lot of people said I was strong at that time and I always say ‘I will take your word for it.’” He plans to spend two years at Bluefield College and then continue his education toward his career goals. He’s excited about what that time will hold. “I want to get better as a kicker and be an asset to the team whenever they need me and being able to come out and just kick and enjoy myself and that is something I have always wanted to do,” Frye said. “As a student I would like to excel at being able to learn a whole lot into my major and just being able to take that and go on to medical school and get into being a pediatric oncologist, that is my biggest concern.” Much has been made of Bluefield College football returning after a 71-year hiatus. No one felt more fortunate to be a part of that first game last Saturday than Frye. “It was awesome, it was an awesome feeling to be part of history that I can grow up and look back on and say, ‘Hey, I was part of their first team that got started after 71 years,’” Frye said. “It is a great feeling to be back on the football field.” —Contact Brian Woodson at bwoodson@bdtonline.com

HEAD COACH MIKE GRAVIER Coach Mike Gravier became the program’s eighth coach when Bluefield College leaders announced him as the coach man who would restart the program that had been dormant since 1941 during a press conference, July 23, 2010. “Hiring the right coach, someone who identifies with the college’s mission and has a passion for transforming young men’s lives through the game of football, is critical to the success of this new program,” said BC president, Dr. David Olive. “I’m convinced we have found that person in Mike Gravier.” Gravier helped launch a football program as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Malone University in Ohio in 1992. Three seasons later, he became the head coach of the young program, where during a four-year span he amassed a 30-12-1 win-loss record, three Mid-States Football Association Championships, a MSFA Coach of the Year honor, and two NAIA National Tournament bids. “Mike brings an excellent understanding of the game and effective coaching style to Bluefield football,” said BC’s athletic director, Pete Dryer. “In addition to his experience and success on the field, we are excited to have a football coach with strong character, a passion to live out his faith in Jesus Christ, and a desire to serve and mentor student-athletes.” Coach Gravier began his career with five years of coaching at the high school level after playing football and earning his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and while earning his master’s degree from Western Michigan University. He spent the next six years as an assistant coach at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, Western Michigan University, Southeast Missouri State University, and Michigan Technological University, before beginning his six-year stint with Malone. He was called back to his alma mater to coach in 1998 and spent two additional seasons as a high school coach in Georgia before devoting his career in 2001 to faith-based ministries, including Christian Outreach International in Florida, where for three years he served as director of sports ministry. Today, while last serving as an assistant coach for football at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, Gravier is the director of OperationSHARE for Heaven Sent Ministries in Princeton, West Virginia, but now he is ready to turn his attention to Bluefield College. “I’m very excited and humbled,” said Gravier about the opportunity to lead the new BC football program. “It’s always an honor to be the first person chosen to lead a football program. It’s a role I don’t take lightly, and I look forward to the challenge. We will play an exciting brand of football. We will play fast. We will be very aggressive, and I believe we will win.” Starting a new football program, Coach Gravier said, will be a special endeavor. Like the players from 1941 who hold memories from the last game played, players on the new BC roster, he said, “will someday share stories about the first touchdown scored, the first win, or the first championship.” Those firsts, he added, “are something only the new players
can experience.” Coach Gravier said in reviving BC football he wants the new players and fans to remember why the program was dropped in 1942 and to honor the young men who joined the war effort and risked their lives to secure our freedom. “We will use that past as part of our future,” said coach Gravier. “It is my desire to honor those former players in some way. If any are still living, I want them to visit and be a part of our team. If they are no longer with us, their families are always welcome.” Coach Gravier acknowledged that a new football team will, no doubt, boost the Greater Bluefield economy, offer an additional source for gridiron entertainment to an already football-hungry community, and give more local studentathletes an opportunity to continue their football careers at home in front of family and friends. But, the impact he’s looking forward to most is the one that will involve his players in community outreach. In line with the Bluefield College mission, Coach Gravier said he hopes to develop players both academically and spiritually. In addition to what the student-athletes will gain in the classroom from professors, through a mentor program with leaders in the community the coach said he wants to develop the players’ career and leadership skills. The purpose, he said: to develop the whole player. “We want to show our players what it means to be a good football player, but also what it means to be a leader in the community, a good husband, and a good father,” said Gravier. “Football will be a small part of their college experience, and hopefully the other things they learn that will carry with them through the good and bad times of life.”
