Football is back, and so is the combination of football and homecoming, as the Rams (0-8) host Lindsey Wilson (2-6) today in a Mid-South Conference game at Mitchell Stadium. The last time Bluefield played a football homecoming game they defeated Rio Grande, 30-7, on Nov. 20, 1941, the final game of the program before it was reinstated after 71 years. Richard “Dick” Bogdan scored the final touchdown in that win.
IN NEED OF WINS
Each club enters the game desperately in need of a win. The Rams are 0-8, 0-3 MSC, while the Blue Raiders have dropped five straight games to fall to 2-6, 0-3 MSC, after entering the season just outside the NAIA Football Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll.

Bluefield will win today ... October 27 and the ninth game are key stats in what history says. When Bluefield started football originally in 1922 the team failed to win a game, they also failed to score a single point. In BC’s second season they suffered four straight shutouts to open the season. Then on Nov. 17, 1923 BC scored its first points in program history as they rumbled to a convincing 24-0 victory over Alderson Academy (W.Va.). Bluefield is also undefeated in two games previously played on this date in history, October 27. In those games BC held its opponents scoreless, drawing a 0-0 stalemate with Roanoke College JV (Va.), in 1923 and defeated Bridgewater (Va.), 18-0, in 1928.
LINDSEY WILSON RECAP
Seven turnovers, including two interceptions returned for touchdowns, doomed Lindsey Wilson College in a 35-7 loss to Belhaven (Miss.) on Saturday (Oct. 20) at Blue Raider Stadium.
NO RAMBLIN RAMS
After opening the season with season high 141 yards on the ground the Rams have struggled with their ground attack. Freshman Marion Harris leads the Rams with 333 yards on 74 carries for a 4.5 yards per carry average. The Red, White & Blue are averaging 88.4 yards per game on the ground led by Harris’s 41.6 yards per game. Harris also leads the team in rushing TDs with three.
NEXT GAME AT MITCHELL STADIUM
The Rams will head on the road next week when they travel to No. 20 Cumberland (Tenn.) before returning home for the final game of 2012 on Nov. 10 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Campbellsville.
TURNOVERS
With seven turnovers last week to Belhaven, Lindsey Wilson has 25 giveaways on the season -- most in the Mid-South. Bluefield has nine takeaways this season -- fewest in the Mid-South. Anthony Rivers leads the Rams while being tied for sixth most in the MidSouth with three interceptions. Rivers also leads BC with four takeaways.

RAMS JOIN FOOD CITY TO BATTLE HUNGER The “Sack the Quarterback” campaign is a community service project that recognizes outstanding defensive effort on the Rams’ football team, while at the same time rewarding disadvantaged families with much needed groceries. The way the campaign works: Every time the BC defense sacks an opposing offensive quarterback during a Rams football game, Food City donates a “sack” of groceries to a local food bank or ministry center to give to someone in need. “Our football players are very excited to partner with Food City to help alleviate some of the hunger issues our community members face every day,” said BC head football coach Mike Gravier. “In my former work as a local missionary, I saw firsthand the effects that hunger can have on people, especially children.” Coach Gravier also noted the importance of demonstrating to his players how fortunate they are, compared to those less privileged in the community. He said he’s confident the “Sack the Quarterback” program will show the Rams how people all around them have needs that they can help address, and he’s thankful, he added, for the support from Food City for this cause. “Food City is a proud sponsor of Bluefield College football,” said Bluefield, Virginia, Food City manager Steve Remines, “and we’re committed to addressing area hunger with the ‘Sack the Quarterback’ campaign. This is a good way to support the football team and to support the community.” To date, the Rams have tallied eight sacks in the 2012 season, meaning eight sacks of groceries have been donated by Food City to a local food bank, this time the Bluefield Union Mission. “When asked to find a local grocer who would be willing to support our ‘Sack the Quarterback’ program, I immediately thought of Food City,” said Annette Tabor, BC’s associate vice president for advancement. “Steve (Remines) is a BC alumnus and has always been supportive our golf tournament and other events. So, I knew he would love the opportunity to be part of this new program, and he was.” In addition to partnering with Food City to alleviate local hunger, the Rams football team has been donating its time to work on skills with area youth football players. The Rams also will be volunteering at Dudley Elementary for its Fall Festival in October. “Bluefield College believes passionately in service above self. It’s a core value, a way of life for our students, faculty and staff,” said Chris Shoemaker, director of marketing and public relations. “Through programs like this and other community service outreach projects, our hope is to prepare compassionate, community-minded, globally-minded students who impact their world.”
HOMECOMING RETURNS By Chris Shoemaker
It was Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 20, and time for the traditional Homecoming season finale for the Bluefield College Ramblin’ Reds football team. The opponent: Rio Grande College. The importance: a mustneed win for the Reds to avoid a losing season. The outcome: a victory for BC, led by freshman Richard “Dick” Bogdan, a highly-touted running back out of Fort Johnson, New York, who spearheaded Coach Tony Lotito’s single wing offense. Bogdan scored often against Rio Grande, including the final touchdown of the game, which capped a 30-7 win for Bluefield, who ended the 1941 campaign at 4-4 overall. “It was a play designed for me,” said Bogdan about the last touchdown run. “I know, because I called it. We were down near the goal line, and I went in off the center,
sort of like a quarterback sneak. It was a thrill!” The big BC win over Rio Grande sparked a great deal of optimism for the upcoming season. After all, the Reds had won their last four out of six games in the 1941 campaign, including victories over Rio, Hiwassee and Tennessee Wesleyan, and would be returning players like Bogdan, Frank Denardo, Rufus Witt, Nelly Frazier, and Frank Lotito. “I was looking forward to next year (1942),” said Bogdan. “Coach Lotito was talking about putting in the T-formation on offense, and we had a lot of good players coming back.” But, it was not meant to be. On December 7, 1941, less than three weeks after the Ramblin’ Reds had celebrated their season finale win, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and the United States found itself at war. Thousands of young American men were called to active duty, including many -- in fact, most -- of the men who attended and played football at Bluefield College. “I was in church at the time,” Bogdan recalls about the day the Japanese declared war on the U.S. “I remember hearing a kid run
down the street screaming about Pearl Harbor. It was chaotic. Everybody back on campus was talking about it.” Bogdan, like most of the BC football team, went from manning the offense to manning machine guns, from driving touchdowns to driving tanks, and from firing passes to firing rocket launchers. Little did he know that the touchdown he scored to cap the Rio Grande win would be his last, maybe even the school’s last. “I didn’t realize it at the time. I had know way of knowing,” said Bogdan. “Coach Lotito said we’d be back soon, that the war wouldn’t last very long, but four years later we were still there.” For four years, he served the underwater defense unit in New Guinea, the East Indies, and the Philippines. At the same time, back on the Bluefield College campus, since most of the men were off fighting a war, there were not enough players to field a football squad. Consequently, the school scrapped the program, and by the time the war ended in 1945, football at Bluefield College was a mere memory. That is until now ...
NAIA TOP-25 LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After a one-week stay at No. 11, University of the Cumberlands rejoins the NAIA’s Top-10, according to the latest NAIA Football Coaches’ Top-25 Poll released by NAIA officials on Monday. Cumberlands rebounded from its only loss of the season a week ago to No. 2-ranked Georgetown College with an impressive 75-13 win over UVa.-Wise this week to climb one spot to No. 10. The Patriots (7-1) received 203 voting points from the national raters to earn this week’s Top-10 ranking. Georgetown continues at No. 2 for a fourth consecutive week after winning 35-10 on Saturday at University of Pikeville. The Tigers (8-0) received 302 voting points and one of the 14 first-place votes from the raters. Georgetown is one of four teams in the poll without a blemish on its record. Cumberland University is the final team from the Mid-South Conference to enjoy a national
ranking. The Bulldogs (6-2) climbed five spots to No. 20 this week after their 28-23 win over visiting Campbellsville University last week. Cumberland’s fivespot leap is the biggest jump in the poll this week. Narrowly missing the Top-25, Bethel University is the first team to earn voting points not ranked. The Wildcats (5-3) upset then-No. 21-ranked Faulkner University last week 33-21 to pick up 20 voting points from the raters this week. Faulkner fell out of the poll with its loss. Marian (Ind.) University (7-0) remained on top of the poll with 314 voting points and the remaining 13 first-place votes. Missouri Valley University (7-0) is No. 3 with 286 voting points followed by Morningside (Iowa) College (7-0) with 283 voting points. The next NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll is scheduled to be released on Monday, Oct. 29.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Georgetown College’s Neal Pawsat, Faulkner University’s Paramore Tapa and Union College’s Keondrick Daniels are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Oct. 13, conference officials announced on Monday. The weekly honor is the first of the season for all three players. Pawsat picks up his second player of the week award of his career, while Tapa and Daniels earn their first career weekly honor. Pawsat threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns to lead the second-ranked Tigers to a 41-35 win over No. 9-ranked University of the Cumberlands on Saturday to earn Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Maysville, Ky., sophomore quarterback completed 25 of his 47 pass attempts without an interception against one of the top defenses in the NAIA. Pawsat threw touchdown passes of 26, 28, 33 and 43 yards to help the Tigers remain atop the Mid-South Conference East Division standings. This season, Pawsat leads the MSC in total offense per game (293.3 yards) and passing yards per game (295.4). His 19 touchdown tosses are second in the conference. Nationally, Pawsat ranks fourth in passing and seventh in total offense. Georgetown remains perfect on the season at 7-0, including a 2-0 record in the MSC East Division. Tapa ended with 11 total tackles in the Eagles’ 42-14 win over No. 16-ranked Cumberland University to earn the MSC Defensive Player of the Week. The Compton, Calif., defensive end recorded 2-1/2 tackles for a loss, including 1-1/2 sacks in Faulkner’s upset win. Tapa added a forced fumble that the Eagles turned into a touchdown late in second quarter to push Faulkner in front 21-14 entering the half. Tapa is tied for fifth in the MSC and 14th in the NAIA with 5-1/2 sacks. He is tied for sixth in the conference with 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Faulkner improves to 5-2 overall and sits atop the MSC West Division with a 3-0 record. Daniels scored a pair of touchdowns off returns in the Bulldogs’ 51-48 loss to Bethel University to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week. The Tallahassee, Fla., freshman returned a punt 79 yards for a score and a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to become the first Bulldog in the program’s history to return a punt and kickoff for scores in the same game. Daniels averaged 40.5 yards per kickoff return and 40 yards per punt return while amassing 242 return yards on the day. Daniels ranks second in the MSC in both punt and kickoff return yards this season. He averages 13.9 yards per punt return and 29.5 yards per kickoff return. Nationally, Daniels ranks seventh in kickoff return yards per game and ninth in punt return yards per outing. Union is 3-4 on the season, including 0-1 in the MSC East Division. The next MSC Player of the Week awards are scheduled to be announced on Monday, Oct. 22.

HEAD COACH MIKE GRAVIER Coach Mike Gravier became the program’s eighth coach when Bluefield College leaders announced him as the coach man who would restart the program that had been dormant since 1941 during a press conference, July 23, 2010. “Hiring the right coach, someone who identifies with the college’s mission and has a passion for transforming young men’s lives through the game of football, is critical to the success of this new program,” said BC president, Dr. David Olive. “I’m convinced we have found that person in Mike Gravier.” Gravier helped launch a football program as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Malone University in Ohio in 1992. Three seasons later, he became the head coach of the young program, where during a four-year span he amassed a 30-12-1 win-loss record, three Mid-States Football Association Championships, a MSFA Coach of the Year honor, and two NAIA National Tournament bids. “Mike brings an excellent understanding of the game and effective coaching style to Bluefield football,” said BC’s athletic director, Pete Dryer. “In addition to his experience and success on the field, we are excited to have a football coach with strong character, a passion to live out his faith in Jesus Christ, and a desire to serve and mentor student-athletes.” Coach Gravier began his career with five years of coaching at the high school level after playing football and earning his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and while earning his master’s degree from Western Michigan University. He spent the next six years as an assistant coach at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, Western Michigan University, Southeast Missouri State University, and Michigan Technological University, before beginning his six-year stint with Malone. He was called back to his alma mater to coach in 1998 and spent two additional seasons as a high school coach in Georgia before devoting his career in 2001 to faith-based ministries, including Christian Outreach International in Florida, where for three years he served as director of sports ministry. Today, while last serving as an assistant coach for football at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia, Gravier is the director of OperationSHARE for Heaven Sent Ministries in Princeton, West Virginia, but now he is ready to turn his attention to Bluefield College. “I’m very excited and humbled,” said Gravier about the opportunity to lead the new BC football program. “It’s always an honor to be the first person chosen to lead a football program. It’s a role I don’t take lightly, and I look forward to the challenge. We will play an exciting brand of football. We will play fast. We will be very aggressive, and I believe we will win.” Starting a new football program, Coach Gravier said, will be a special endeavor. Like the players from 1941 who hold memories from the last game played, players on the new BC roster, he said, “will someday share stories about the first touchdown scored, the first win, or the first championship.” Those firsts, he added, “are something only the new players
can experience.” Coach Gravier said in reviving BC football he wants the new players and fans to remember why the program was dropped in 1942 and to honor the young men who joined the war effort and risked their lives to secure our freedom. “We will use that past as part of our future,” said coach Gravier. “It is my desire to honor those former players in some way. If any are still living, I want them to visit and be a part of our team. If they are no longer with us, their families are always welcome.” Coach Gravier acknowledged that a new football team will, no doubt, boost the Greater Bluefield economy, offer an additional source for gridiron entertainment to an already football-hungry community, and give more local studentathletes an opportunity to continue their football careers at home in front of family and friends. But, the impact he’s looking forward to most is the one that will involve his players in community outreach. In line with the Bluefield College mission, Coach Gravier said he hopes to develop players both academically and spiritually. In addition to what the student-athletes will gain in the classroom from professors, through a mentor program with leaders in the community the coach said he wants to develop the players’ career and leadership skills. The purpose, he said: to develop the whole player. “We want to show our players what it means to be a good football player, but also what it means to be a leader in the community, a good husband, and a good father,” said Gravier. “Football will be a small part of their college experience, and hopefully the other things they learn that will carry with them through the good and bad times of life.”
