WELCOME TO OUR SPRING EDITION! Wow, Issue 7, and it's Spring again already? Time is flying in 2014, and I've been having a mild panic attack at my long awaited Christmas holiday (approaching very fast) which has been well over a year in the making! Being a wedding photographer, I'm all too familiar from hearing my bride's stories about the long year (or more) of planning, and see the sense of relief on their faces as they enjoy the day they've worked so hard to make perfect. I completely take my hat off to you! I've had over a year to plan my holiday and only three months out, I'm just kicking into gear. Unfortunately I've seen the other side to planning, where some brides are enquiring too close to their big day, sometimes even 6 - 12 months out (much like I would!) for their venues or photographer, and left feeling disappointed as most are booking out. My tip: don't forget the 'big three' - ceremony, reception, photographer. These are your 'big three' that can book out up to 12 months (or occasionally more) in advance, so make sure DESIGN + CONTENT SB CREATIVE CO.

HE SAID : SHE SAID MEET CASSIE + JACOB

CASSIE 23

JACOB 25

HOW WE MET he said I first met Cassie out on Flinders Street. She definitely caught my eye!

she said I first met jake on a girls night out in town. Â He was my sisters friend who I got introduced to out that night.

T H E F I R S T D AT E he said Dinner at Cassie's house. She invited me over and cooked me spaghetti bolognese. It was impressive! I remember thinking "she can cook , we have a keeper.

she said  I invited jake over for dinner on our first date, and cooked spaghetti bolognese. It's funny, even though I had cooked it so many times before (and it's an easy dish) I was still nervous!

26

THE FIRST KISS he said Our first kiss was just after our first date together. I decided to try and go for the first kiss. I remember how relieved I felt when she kissed me back!

she said That would have been on our first date! I must have made a really good spaghetti...

THE FIRST I LOVE YOU he said To be honest, I can't remember exactly the first 'real' time. But what I can remember is casually 'dropping' it at the end of a phone call, just to test the waters [haha].

she said I think it was right before hanging up after a phone call. He said, 'Bye, love you' which was completely unexpected, but cute.

T H E F I R S T VA L E N T I N E S he said I was away with work , but made it up the next year! We went to dinner at the Casino.

she said I went out and found a big frame to make a collage of our favourite photos of us to put inside! I snuck it into his house while he was at work, left it his bedside table with a home made card for him to see when he got home from work.

THE SMALL THINGS YOU LOVE he said Cassie always suprises me with chocolates when she comes from work, and massages! Massages are part of what Cassie does for work, so she does it well.

she said Jake does shift work, but when he's home from work he'll always have dinner on or ready waiting for me on the table when I get home from work. I find it so sweet to have dinner made for you!

THE BEST MOMENTS he said Cassie and I have just got back from New Zealand recently, this would have to be one of my best experiences with her. Next, I'd have to say taking Cassie back to Bellingen, New South Wales - my home town to met my parents. It's such a nice and relaxing place to visit.

she said We love travelling, so I have so many memories and moments with Jake I keep close to me. But, the big ones are probably riding elephants together in Thailand, snowboarding in the New Zealand snow and relaxing in Jake's home town, Bellingen.

W H AT Y O U L O V E M O S T he said Cassie is always caring for others, polite, trustworthy and genuinely just a kind person.

she said I love Jake because he's become my best friend aswell as my other half. I can tell him anything and I know he will either help me out or keep it to himself.Â

'BEHIND THE MIC' AND HIT THE WEDDING SCENE?

I never in a million years thought I'd end up becoming a marriage celebrant. About twelve months ago, my collegue and good friend Courtney got engaged to her partner, Tom. We often spoke about how special it would be if someone she knew could marry her, and I joked around that I would be perfect at it. The next day, Courtney wrote a beautiful hand penned letter asking me to do it for them as a wedding gift. How could I say no? I honestly thought it would be just a one off, but as people got wind of it, it's been a steady stream of

SO, YOUR ON THE 'YOUNGER SIDE' TO BE A MARRIAGE CELEBRANT. IS THIS A COMPLETE PLUS FOR YOU? DOES IT CHANGE THE WAY YOU APPROACH WEDDINGS?

Ha! I laugh when people say this. But I do hear it a lot. I think Townsville has some wonderful celebrants out there and age is nothing more than a number. I feel my 'youth' and background can bring a fresh, contemporary take on a wedding ceremony. It's 2014; why not weave some of that with tradition for a beautiful, modern ceremony.

Love is the most uncontainable emotion. It turns you crazy; puts you off food. You forget about your work and it gives you such a sense of euphoria - it's amazing.

FRESHLY HITCHED COUPLE AS HUSBAND AND WIFE?

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork - and study! There's been some changes to the industry this year and we have to constantly study components to stay abreast of changes with the legislation.

I'd hate to be in a world without it.

much fun. There is so much electricity in the air. I love heaps of communication with people that I'm going to marry. It's their big day, the more I can get from them the more I have in creating a ceremony that they will remember for the rest of their lives. Before they decide to choose me for their wedding though, I encourage them to come over to have a coffee and just talk. They the get the chance to feel my vibe and see what's in store for their ceremony. NOW LET'S ADMIT, WHAT'S THE MOST SPECIAL PART OF A CEREMONY FOR YOU THAT MAKES YOU FEEL A LITTLE MUSHY?

Involving kids. Its 2014, so the traditional way of kids after you marry no longer is the 'norm'. People that want to extend the ceremony to include children is a real tear jerker. That, and the first kiss as husband and wife.

bride and groom need to worry about is all the boring stuff, like paperwork before their big day. They need someone that create a fun, yet romantic envrironment that they are going to remember for the rest of their life. I know it sounds corny, but I want people to walk away from a ceremony that I've been a part of, all loved up with a smile on their face. WHERE YOU SEE YOURSELF A YEAR FROM NOW? WHAT'S NEXT FOR CK?

Well, I've just signed a new extended contract with 106.3FM, so you'll hear me on air nice and early for a few more years to come. It's all pretty exciting, because the end of 2015 will mark my 10th year getting up at 3:30am here in Townsville - I love it! On the home front, my wife and I are talking about adding to our own family, but in the meantime our three hounds are keeping us pretty busy. Aside from heading back to Europe to explore some new countries (and eat some strange new food) hopefully marrying as many loved up North Queenslanders as possible! •

CK'S TOP 5 TIPS TO MAKE IT 'YOUR CEREMONY' (AND NOT SOMEBODY ELSE'S!)

1. PINTEREST MAKE IT YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND. WEDDINGS DON'T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE; GET CREATIVE YOURSELF. 2. GOT KIDS? INVOLVE THEM IN YOUR CEREMONY THERE ARE MANY RITUALS THAT INVOLVE YOUR KIDS. IT ADDS A BEAUTIFUL TOUCH TO A SPECIAL DAY. 3. SPEND SOME TIME ON YOUR VOWS MAKE PEOPLE L AUGH, CRY AND MAKE SURE YOUR SOUL MATE KNOWS HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM. 4. CHAMPAGNE GIVE ALL YOUR GUESTS A GL ASS OF CHAMPAGNE AT THE END OF THE CEREMONY. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND A FORTUNE ON FRENCH BUBBLES TO 'CHEERS' YOUR WEDDING DAY. 5.BREAK THE RULES! THIS IS YOUR DAY.

I kept coming back to it and knew it was the right one from the beginning." - Annika

JUST TRUST ME "I remember feeling really excited, clutching on to my Dad’s arm, waiting to walk down the aisle. There was no questions as to the song I was going to walk down the aisle to - I had chosen 'Maps' by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs which I have always adored. I heard the song start, but it was a different version and I remember my dad saying “Just trust me”. I was confused at first, then I realised my oldest friend Khaela was playing her guitar and singing the song. I wanted to burst into tears and run up the aisle and hug her but had to compose myself! It was a complete surprise. Her voice was stunning. Composing myself was hard." - Annika

THE VIBE "I didn’t want to have a theme as such - but I just love flowers and nature, and we both love music so we wanted that incorporated somehow. We had lots of flowers and had our ceremony in a little park surrounded by beautiful native plants. I spent endless hours chasing our style music and songs from the past shared with family and friends. Keeping our wedding small and meaningful made the day great for us." - Annika

We wound up at the Coral Sea Resort headland, under the rotunda; champagne in hand, watching the sunset over the Whitsunday’s when he pulled a ring out from his shirt pocket. I literally squealed with excitement which made everyone at the resort look at us. All of a sudden Michael was on one knee, forcing a ring onto the wrong hand (the nerves must have kicked in at this point) and asking me to marry him. THE LUCKY PLAN “We booked our wedding at the start of June to minimise the chance of rain. However with my family’s luck, and now Sarah’s, of course it was overcast the day before our wedding and the chance of rain seemed high. Sarah booked our venue for the open air outdoors atmosphere so I thought a marquee was not an option. As the chance of rain increased so did the stress levels so I had to act. I rang the Bureau of Meteorology in Townsville and asked for the most highly qualified Meteorologist on staff. ‘Mario’ took the call and told me straight, "Mate, if it were my wedding. you’d wanna make sure you put a marquee up." So that's what I arranged, and I didn’t tell Sarah about it until it started raining the night before the wedding.” - Michael

THE RECEPTION “Our reception was perfectly visualised, planned and implemented. Sarah had a great vision from the start of preparations - which I could not see at all no matter how she explained it. We had our wedding at The Heritage Trust in West End with stunning grounds and historic Queenslander backdrops. I was blown away by seeing all the small details that combined to create the most amazing atmosphere. - Michael

SUBSCRIBE | www.rufflesandcake.com.au

THE PLAN “I think the venue was the main inspiration behind the theme and then it evolved from there. I had actually been eyeing off the The Heritage Trust garden as a potential venue for a couple of years, to the point of recording when the arbours and arches flowered! The grounds where perfect for an old school garden party, with a bit of a glamed up Gatstby flair. The Plan: the ceremony would be perfect under the blooming arch, and afterwards a jazz band playing while canapĂŠs and drinks were served on the verandah of the historic Currajong Queenslander. Dinner and dancing under the stars was to follow. It was hard to sell to Michael initially, and our wedding was the first wedding and reception in recent times to be held at the Trust, but he eventually trusted me and it was just perfect.â€? - Sarah

W H AT ' S N E X T “We have many big plans starting with our mini-moon. That's right, we get two honeymoons. One mini for now and one massive (after we pay off for the wedding). After that it will back to normal married life; watching TV and talking about the weather. Sarah and I have plans to start a family which we are both very excited about. I am naive, targeting four kids and Sarah wants one, so I guess we will meet somewhere in the middle. Sarah will also continue to work on her ever growing and successful business, so that one day soon I can retire and go fishing ALL THE TIME” - Michael "As above, minus two children and Mick’s retirement plan." - Sarah

THE DRESS “My mum lives in Perth so we met ‘half way’ in Melbourne to go shopping for my dress. I got it from a family owned boutique called Raffaele Ciuca and the dress was by Pronovias. It was French lace and was probably about the 20th dress I tried on. I had looked at home prior to leaving for Melbourne so it took a couple of months to find but really only about a half a day to a day of shopping in Melbourne. It was the one because my mum cried and she is definitely not a crier!” - Brydi

TOUCHES OF PURPLE "Purple is my favourite colour, and I picked the bridesmaids dresses based on that. Plus, I thought a nice purple would suit all of my bridesmaids. From there I kept the colours neutral by having creams and whites with everything and pops of purple. It wasn’t over the top." - Brydi

T H E WAT C H “A watch was given to Ben from his Dad before the ceremony. Ben's Dad had never had the opportunity to have it passed down to him before Ben's grandfather passed away, so he wanted to make sure that he took the opportunity to do this for Ben. The wedding felt like the perfect time. The watch is over 20 years old, and I know Ben will always keep it close to his heart. - Brydi

JUST LET IT HAPPEN "I was so nervous the entire day. I don’t like attention and I don’t like being in front of people, so the whole idea of standing in front of 90 odd people really got to me. While driving to the ceremony, my Dad's golf buggy went flat and we were bunny hopping up a steep hill. We were both laughing so hard that we started crying, so my make up was a mess before we even got to the ceremony! That was probably the funniest part of the entire weekend. If I could pass on one piece of advice - it would be to not stress about the small things just let it happen. The day will be perfect regardless" - Brydi

THE CEREMONY "Once I got to the end of the aisle, I really started getting emotional and couldn’t even talk to Ben when I got to him. I just had to hold onto his hands and look at him. Apparently he told me I looked beautiful and I told him to stop talking [haha]! We didn’t write our own vows, but I chose vows from what our celebrant gave us that were short, to the point and not too corny as that’s just not us. " - Brydi

WIND DOWN “Being only a quick five minute buggy ride away from photo locations, we were able to fit in a bit of a break after our ceremony, and wind down at our Yacht Club apartment, have a drink and freshen up ready for photos. Being able to just stop, sit down and just enjoy the moment with our closest friends made the day that little bit more special." - Brydi

THE PROPOSAL "Ben proposed on New Year's Eve in my Dad's home town in Switzerland in the freezing cold on the stroke of midnight. New Year's Eve also marked our 6th anniversary together." - Brydi

YOUR VOICE We asked you your opinion Facebook. This is what you said...

WHEN THE BIG DAY FINALLY ARRIVES, IT CAN BE A TRICKY TASK TO WIND-DOWN AFTER ALL THE PLANNING! WE ASKED YOU YOUR TOP TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE WEDDING DAY!

"Be organised, then on your big day you will know that you have done everything you can to ensure a magical day. Be selective about who's around you the morning of your wedding. As much as you will want to share it with many of your loved ones, it's not the time, that's what the reception is for. Less people equals less opinions, less noise and less drama! And lastly, choose bridesmaids that will have fun, make you laugh and most importantly keep you relaxed!" ERICA SPERRING

“ Give the groom a 'to do' list. He will be so nervous and will need to focus his anxiety somewhere.” ANGELA VAN DINTER

MANDY LEE "Let people help - don't try to do it all youself! When I got married, my now husband and I thought we'd have a small, backyard wedding. My husband is a qualified chef, so thought we'd cater and cook the food just prior for the day. Not a good idea! As much as I enjoyed myself, I spent most of the night worrying about everything and found it hard to wind down."

"I got married last Saturday and had the best day ever! No stress at all. My husband and I planned everything to do with the wedding ourselves, so we both knew what was going on. On the day, we had our MC check the reception set up and put our place cards out which was such a great help. Our MC was a close family friend and made everything so fun on the day and night! It also helps to have fun and bubbly hair and makeup ladies which make getting ready relaxing and calms the nerves" M E L I S S A R AT H B O R N E

G R E AT A D V E N T U R E Our second day in Cinque Terra (on the Italian coastline) was spent trecking from one town (Monterosso) to Vernazza. The 2 hour track took us up above the amazing blue waters of the Italian coastline. When we got to the end of the track, we were‌ by the most amazing view of Vernazza. We were also proud that we did it all in thongs,

M U S T E AT Any pasta in Italy. We couldn't get enough of it! Also the seafood in Cinque Terra was amazing and so fresh. Aaron became quite fond of frogs legs, although the feeling wasn't mutual.

despite warnings from the locals. the blisters were definitely worth it!

MUST DO

WISH WE... Spent more time in Cinque Terra; relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

The Catacombes in Paris were incredibly interesting and a definite must see. It was the only attraction that we had to line up for as you can not pre-book tickets, but it was worth the wait. A little eerie, but one of the most interesting places we have ever visited. We also loved the The La Sagrada Familia is a gothic church in Barcelona. The architecture of the church is simply astounding.

QUICK STOPOVER Our two day stopover in Dubai included a trip to the Atlantis water Park. The slides and pools were scary and completely outrageous. A great place for people of all ages to visit.

BEST EXPERIENCE The Moulin Rouge was an incredible experience. We weren't sure what to expect, but there is a reason this show is iconic around the world. We also booked a private viewing of Stone Henge at sunset. We went into the stones and were able to appreciate the enormity of their existence.
