SPRING HAS SPRUNG! Spring has sprung, and we’re excited! Not only are we eager for balmy nights and gorgeous North Queensland days, but we can finally reveal our Win Your Wedding winners. Back in July we launched our Win Your Wedding promotion in conjunction with Mercure Townsville and were blown away by the amazing response we received. Over 300 entries were received and we read each and everyone one of them. Unfortunately, we could only pick four finalists (even though there were so many deserving people) and over 2000 votes later, we have ourselves a winner. We’re thrilled to feature them in this edition and have to congratulate all our finalists on being such wonderful, gracious people. Issue three is, as usual, packed full of gorgeous weddings, great advice and cute ideas. We’re in love with Marita & Greg’s Magnetic Island wedding, Megan & Andy’s stunning marquee reception and wait til you see our destination wedding… it’s beyond amazing! No issue would be complete without a big shout out and thanks to our fantastic contributors and advertisers, they really do keep us going. Would you like to see your business on the pages of Ruffles & Cake? Why not email us for a media kit and a chat? Now sit back, grab a cuppa and enjoy!

BLACKBOARDS

Blackboards are cheap, fun and add tons of flair to your big day. An easy DIY for the crafty bride, there’s literally a multitude of uses for humble boards: a welcome sign, a photobooth prop, a drinks menu board, a seating chart…the list goes on and on. Check out our Pinterest board for more inspiration. Psst...Where we found them locally? Typo!

VINTAGE FURNITURE A couple of vintage furniture pieces at a wedding always makes me swoon. Whether your style is retro or glam; whimsy or cool, a few well-placed statement pieces can really personalise the look of your wedding. You don’t need much; just a few great pieces should do the trick (think of it as statement jewellery, you don’t want overkill.) Perhaps a vintage couch in your reception area for guests to unwind and relax, or some great vintage chairs for your ceremony. PHOTOGRAPH THANKS TO SHANNON WALKER, A MOMENT CAPTURED PHOTOGRAPHY

COLOURED WEDDING DRESSES Forget the white wedding, why not be a blushing bride in pink! Just for a moment, throw your ideas of a white wedding out the window. Instead, consider this: powder blue accents, blush tinged hems or bold in black (hey, if it’s good enough for Vera Wang!) Colours made a statement at some of the latest bridal shows, and with celebs like Anne Hathaway and Jessica Biel recently getting hitched in pink, more and more people are being inspired to jump on the colour bandwagon!

A NEW KIND OF WEDDING PROGRAM It’s time to say bye-bye to traditional and say hello to fun, witty and unique programs that will bring a smile to your guests’ faces. Remember, your wedding program should represent your wedding! Whether it’s colourful, edgy, romantic…put your personalities on the page! Try to think outside the box. Sure, include all the usual stuff (who’s in the wedding party, order of events, etc), but inject a little you into it too – how you both met, where you had your first kiss, favourite quotes, etc. The possibilities are endless! so you end up rambling on about Aunt Marthas jam drop recipe that you both baked as children. You’ve got to make this speech one to remember. PRESSURE! I’m not gonna lie, I googled! Yep; I’m ashamed to admit it because writing a speech about one of my favourite people in the world should come naturally - but I googled ‘Tips for making a good bridesmaid speech’. Cheesy right? You’ll

This month my little sister is getting married and I am so totally over the moon for her and my new soon to be ‘brother from another mother’. The anticipation has built as the big day drawers closer and we plan the nitty gritty details; from the blooms to the table seating arrangements to discussing the pros and cons of changing into a second party dress after the formalities. You see not only am I her big sister and best friend but I am also….da-da-dum... The Maid of Honour! Not the Matron of Honour as she affectionately likes to call me (I do not need a reminder that I am married, have a baby and a non- existent social life, which is how I feel when she calls me this – cheeky sod!) With being maid of honour comes a list of responsibilities or long list in many cases. Not only must you be number one confidante, you must check your e-mails every hour for updates (I’m not kidding), try on horrid horrid dresses until you find the perfect one, match the right dress with the right shoes, talk colour schemes, help choose the perfect flowers to match the dress / venue, fit fittings into your schedule, be there for important hair trials, make sure the bride eats, hydrates and is told how amazing she looks during the getting ready process, lift her heavy dress every time she needs to pee (re-thinking the hydrating part now) and…make a speech! Now don’t get me wrong, I know how to yap. I can talk the ear off a basset hound. I have been an MC on a

be intrigued to know that nothing in google helped. I had to make this my own, and just to add even more pressure, I heard from a friend that my sister and her fiancé were excited to hear my speech because they were sure it was going to be ‘quirky and funny’! Eeek! I literally lay in bed night after night thinking about what I am going to talk about. There are thousands of stories from our childhood that I could share but that would only bore everybody else at the reception who didn’t know us as children. Have you ever sat at one of these weddings where the speeches drag on for hours, and nobody is interested that Johnny loved playing in the sandpit with his tonka trucks when he was two... or that Jessie loved her dog banjo and enjoyed taking him to the beach. Seriously, no one cares. Write that stuff on a piece of paper and stick it on the bathroom door so people can read it when they go to the loo! I decided to make this very important speech from the heart - make it meaningful and about the couple, not just my sister. After all that’s why this occasion is taking place. Its about the two of them and why they are so special together. Of course I’m not going to miss an opportunity to throw in a random yet embarrassing ‘funny’ about my sister (when else will I get another opportunity like this?) and I will absolutely NOT drink too much champagne before making this very important speech… I will save that for afterwards. Wish me luck! Until next edition…Tam x

HOW WE ME T HE SAID We met on the dating site RSVP but we were a little embarrassed at the start so we would tell everyone that we met through friends at a BBQ.

THE FIRST DATE HE SAID Larissa invited me to her place to watch the footy and have a few drinks and homemade pizzas. I can still remember what she was wearing that night too - a yellow shirt and little black shorts and she had straightened her hair!

SHE SAID He came over to watch the footy. I made pizzas and had the beer on ice.

THE FIRST KISS HE SAID Was on the same night [as their first date].

SHE SAID Was completely natural. Our chemistry was instant.

THE FIRST I LOVE YOU HE SAID Yeah - that was me, and it was pretty quick as well. I think like a month into our relationship and Larissa doesn’t let me forget it either.

SHE SAID Does it make me a bad fiancé that I can’t remember? I just know that he said it first!

FINDING THE ONE HE SAID Our first date! I mean footy, pizza and beer what more could I want? Honestly, I’m not sure but I suppose it would be when I decided to move to Townsville with Larissa from the Gold Coast. That was a massive life changing event and for me to say yes [to moving] I had to know she was the one.

SHE SAID I always knew he was the one but he cemented it for me when I was sick. I gave him the option to bail however he wouldn’t leave my side. He was there for all the surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and has done it all! He’s been my rock and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him.

“I spent so much time planning our wedding and enjoyed it so much that I had decided that I would look in to party planning as a potential hobby.”

I woke up early at Lotus House and found my now sister-in-law Lauren on the couch,” Kate remembers. “We simply sat in silence for a few minutes watching the ocean roll in. That brief moment was all I needed to clear my mind and prepare myself for the most wonderful day of my life.” So what does her husband think of the clean eating life he’s had to adapt to since their wedding day? “I struck gold,” Kate says plainly. “I often hear friends say that their husbands or families would ever eat the raw zucchini pasta or dehydrated spinach crackers that I make, but Jordan eats anything I cook and in turn, he drags me out bed in the mornings to take the dogs for a run.” Kate’s ultimate goal is to own and operate a seaside holistic health practice that specialises in mending dysfunctional relationships with food and offering education about the healing power of food and exercise. In the meantime, she has some other things to take care of. “Getting the red wine stains out of my wedding dress, growing more vegetables and extending out family with a pet duck are my immediate goals,” Kate says. “And officially changing my surname as promised before our wedding will also make Jordan happy, and you know what they say - happy husband, happy life.”

KATE’S BIG DAY BREAKY IN THE GIDDY EXCITEMENT OF THE WEDDING DAY, EVEN THE HEALTHIEST OF BRIDES CAN FORGET THE IMPORTANCE OF A NOURISHING BREAKFAST. A few strawberries to compliment the champagne won’t cut it and few hours into the festivities you’ll be sporting a headache to rival the one you’re traditionally meant to experience the next morning. Try one of Kate’s bridal breakfast recipes to prevent the stomach growling getting louder than your band’s performance and keep your energy up until the final song.

DON’T RAIN ON MY PARADE “The morning of my wedding I woke up so excited only to look out the window to see a sky full of dark clouds looming. Then rain started bucketing down. I was so upset! I was convinced my wedding was ruined as the ceremony was entirely outdoors. Luckily, the rain didn’t last long and soon enough the sun came out and it ended up being absolutely perfect weather. I couldn’t have asked for a better day. “

FAMILY Greg and Marita included their children into the ceremony by making Milla the flowergirl and Caleb the ring bearer. “Our family is the most important thing to both of us so we wanted to include everyone in some way. Milla had a fabulous time having her hair done and dressing up in her ‘party’ dress. She even managed to sneak a nap in before the ceremony so she was all ready to go! Caleb really enjoyed joining the groomsmen for a morning photoshoot as well; he loved being a part of the wedding party.”

THE DRESS As any bride will tell you, finding The Dress is not always an easy task. Marita hit The Bridal Palace with her mother, “I thought I knew what I wanted but once I was actually in the bridal store surrounded by all the gorgeous gowns I knew I would have to just let the dress find me.” After trying on over 10 wedding dresses, Marita’s dress found her! “As soon as I put it on I felt like a bride. I instantly knew it would be the one I would walk down the aisle in. I tried on a few gowns that were very beautiful but I just felt as though I was going to a ball or a formal event rather than my own wedding. I really wanted to feel like a bride and wear a dress to remember”.

DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL “I was blown away by how emotional my father was when he was giving me away. He cried as he walked me down the aisle and I couldn’t look at him or I’d start crying as well and I didn’t want to ruin my make up! One of my younger brothers was a mess too. There were lots of tears at the ceremony. It was an emotional day!”

THE CEREMONY A private family residence set the scene for Marita and Greg’s gorgeous day. “This was a very easy decision for us. The venue was at my grandfather’s house on the island where we regularly spend weekends and have big family lunches. We’ve had some fabulous times there over Easter, Christmas and New Year so we knew it would be the perfect choice. My grandmother Jenny spent months in the garden getting it all ready. She also found an old canoe down by the beach a few weeks before and filled it with fresh white flowers for us. It added a special touch to the ceremony.”

POLARIOD Marita & Greg supplied Polaroid cameras and film for guests to snap away. “They pegged them up on the bare branches of a white tree which we now have back at home. It’s a sweet little reminder of the day and also served as a guestbook.”

82

THE DESSERT TABLE Townsville cake maker and decorator Happy Cakes was in charge of the cake and dessert table. “The cake was three tiers with different flavours on each one: white chocolate raspberry on the bottom, caramel in the middle and choc peppermint on the top. We decided to have a dessert table because I love love love sweets and knew the cake just wouldn’t be enough! We also placed photos of my parents and Greg’s parents on their wedding days on the cake table. We thought it would be a nice way to include them.”

THE CELE BRATION Guests celebrated until the wee hours with band Groove providing entertainment to a packed dance floor. “Everyone was in high spirits and the vibe was just electric. I don’t think the dancefloor was ever empty. My brother Jacob did a solo performance to Single Ladies too which was a hoot!” said Marita.

86

THE SPEECH “My Maid of Honour wanted to do her speech as a performance (we used to spend our childhood making up dances and singing together all the time) so she did her speech then broke into dance with the other bridesmaids to Beyonce’s song Love on Top (a favourite song of mine), which is why they had the sailor hats - it was magic! I couldn’t have asked for a better speech - they know me so well! Those sailor hats became quite the fashion accessory on the dance floor. I think nearly everyone was wearing one at some stage throughout the night.”

THE DANCE Marita and Greg took dance lessons to make their first dance one to remember. “The moment when he lifted me up into the air and the guests went wild is something I will always remember.

THE DRESS With a silk ruched bodice and layered organza skirt, Megan’s dress was far from what she had originally envisioned. “I always pictured myself wearing a fitted lace dress, with a very low back. But after 3 dresses & not feeling the wow, I saw this dress secretly hidden in the cupboard for no one to see. The shop had shipped up this dress specifically for another girl but I had to try it on. I didn’t bother trying anything else on because by the look on my mum’s face, I couldn’t go any further. It was so far from what I expected & I knew no one else would expect it as well.”

THE CEREMONY The couple chose beautiful Queens Gardens for their late afternoon ceremony, held under an enormous rain tree. With an already spectacular backdrop, the couple held back on decorations, with white slatted chairs and aisle runner their only accessories. The couple also dotted cute wooden signs near the park entrances so guests were easily able to find the ceremony location. Bubbles and quirky programs were given to guests on arrival.

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS Being a photographers son, photos were something the couple were very particular about, choosing two photographers. “Aidan and I were exceptionally lucky enough to have Andrew Rankin from Andrew Rankin photography & Megan Morano from Insight Creative. Both with so much experience and they both brought their different strengths, to deliver the most stunning photos!

THE RECEPTION Megan & Andy decided on a classic theme of black & white with a hint of Megan’s obsession, Tiffany & Co. A silk lined marquee was erected at the Maritime Museum in Palmer Street

112

THE CAKE Sticking with their elegant black and white theme, Megan and Andy chose a simple two-tiered cake decorated with a black bow in a nod to incorporate their Tiffany & Co elements. “ The first tier was caramel & the 2nd was chocolate mudcake that was served to our immediate family only. On the other tables there were beautiful vintage 3 tier cake stands that had mini cupcakes and cheesecakes. You know your dessert has impressed when ¾ of the guests are Sicilian and there wasn’t one bit left.”

THE ENTERTAINMENT Aidan booked the entertainment, Katie & Con, after seeing them play one night at Flynn’s. “At one point they had everybody on the dance floor, their energy was amazing”. The couple also booked a photobooth to keep their guests entertained, “We picked the option of having the big guest book for our guests to sign under their crazy photos! We look at ours all the time!! I love how the further into the book we get, the crazier the photos are. It’s such a great reminder of your guests at the wedding because unfortunately you can’t get a photo with everyone.”

THE DRESS Angie’s Jenny Packham gown was purchased last minute – a lucky online find combining the right amount of elegance, float and sexiness! “I was checking online and searching for ‘the dress’, it was one of the highlights of prepping for the day. It found me in the end”.

THE CEREMONY Angie and Ben chose the spectacular Khayangan Estate in Bali for their ceremony and reception. “It was honestly one of the most breath-taking villas in Bali. We saw a few, but we knew that it was the venue for us the minute we walked up the driveway.”

Ben’s father, John Jones did the Haka as part of his speech (I’m from NZ). And my friend, Rachel, also married Ben and I – that was simply incredible! My most touching moment was really Rachel Plecas, our best friend and celebrant. She’s extremely close to me, my idol really. She gave me words of wisdom and made me feel ultra calm the entire time.”

THE RECEPTION The bride & groom designed their amazing reception and ceremony look. “Ben and I love to host parties, and had done a lot of cool set-ups before. I have a furniture business called Fred Lives Here, so that helps because we have a pretty keen design eye. My husband just opened a restaurant and Bar called Oxwell & Co in Singapore, of which he did a lot of the design. Safe to say that we were in our comfort-zone when it came to wedding planning!

We were lucky enough to have the ceremony inside Marie Antoinette’s private gardens. France and the history of the French Imperial history has long held a fascination with me, so to have our wedding in such a historically rich and beautiful spot was amazing! We were married by the ‘Temple of Love’ which was erected in 1778. It was a beautiful afternoon, the flowers and birds were out in force and a more ‘French’ picture you could not imagine. We wore matching blue linen suits and recited our vows to each other in the shadow of the worlds most romantic and magnificent palace. A dream come true! While we were in Paris we stayed in the Hotel Le Notre Dame, designed by Christian Lacroix, the hotel was located directly across from the Notre Dame with views over the river Sienne and the magnificent cathedral itself. On our wedding night we were lucky enough to stay at Versailles in the Triannon Palace. While in Paris we visited all the famous sights of the city with highlights including the Arc De Triumph, Monte Marte and Champs selesey. We spent a day exploring the Antique and Vintage district and ate as much food as we could possibly fit in. France was picturesque, the people were stylish and very friendly and the whole experience left us feeling very at home. I cannot wait to go back to the worlds most beautiful city!

We based ourselves in Sorrento a town perched on soaring cliffs which overlooks the most stunning coastline I have ever seen. We took a day trip out to the Island of Capri, famous for it’s beautiful town and stunning houses. We explored the island and were even lucky enough to enter the ‘Blue Grotto’, a cave opening which can only be entered by laying flat in a row boat as the entrance is so small. Once inside the pitch black cavern, you look down to say one of natures most beautiful displays. Fluorescent aqua water which is unlike anything in the world; it glows and shimmers and looks like something from another planet. Stunning! We went to the cliff top towns of Posetano and Amalfi, ate the best food we have ever experienced in our life and explored the ancient city of Pompeii. The Amalfi coast was incredibly beautiful, the sunsets, the incredible water and the beautiful people make this luxury destination feel homely and unique.

GREECE “AS SOON AS REAC H THE I SLANDS YOU CAN SEE WHY THE INSPIRED THE STORIES OF ANCIE NT GRE E K MYTHOLOGY” From Italy we travelled to the Greek Islands, where we spent the last leg of our honeymoon. We spent 8 nights exploring Mykonos, Paros, Santorini and Los. As soon as reach the Islands you can see why the inspired the stories of ancient Greek Mythology - rocky outcrops rising from the bluest water you have ever seen! The Greek islands are famous for food, beautiful sceneray and partying! We took boat cruises, swam in the clearest water imaginable, ate lamb and octopus on deserted beaches and explored the ancient ruins, temples and bars! The island of Santorini was perhaps the most beautiful of the four. Still an active volcano, the island is famous for it’s luxurious towns, beaches and laid back lifestyle. A highlight was visiting a restaurant perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the bay, and the beautiful cobble stoned lanes full of gelato. We scuba dived on Los and saw hundreds of beautiful fish and giant clams, a wonderful experience!
