THE JOURNEY OF A MASTERPIECE
along-time Tufenkian customer and admirer of Vincent Van Gogh had always wanted a reproduction of one of the Dutch master’s works in his home. The iconic Irises had special meaning for him.

He chose Tufenkian Artisan Carpets to bring his vision to life and was willing to wait for as long as it took to complete. Having a background in the art of needlepoint, he also provided steady input as to the effect he desired.

To render the painting as a runner, the design was flipped several times to create an undulating flow of irises. The Tufenkian rug artist, Kazumi painstakingly matched yarn colors, using twenty six color placements. In a three-year process of making and reviewing strikeoffs, the final choices of wool or silk yarn were made, plus carving the pile to create the impressionistic look of a Van Gogh.
As the longest custom project on record at Tufenkian, Irises involved countless emails and discussions, seventeen renderings, one hand painting by the artist, and four different strikeoffs.
Every guest who visits the client’s home is welcomed by a gorgeously functional interpretation of a classic work of art. Go Van Gogh!
