Since 1910 All our bulbs are originally shipped from the nursery of Ruigrok Flowerbulbs, in De Zilk, Holland. The company has grown and traded bulbs since 1910 and is still a family owned business. The modern nursery covers 250 acres of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus in both the southern and northern bulb district. In addition, Ruigrok Flowerbulbs buys many bulbs from other growers, who are carefully selected for their quality bulbs.

As the Nursery Manager at Ruigrok Flowerbulbs, I maintain our bulbÂ fields all year round. Our peak season is in the summer (June - September), when the bulbs are harvested, cleaned, selected, packed and shipped all over the world. We replant the stock of smaller bulbs in October and November and cover the fields with a layer of straw. During the growing season I fertilize and spray the fields. I take care of the water drainage when necessary. In spring, when the flowers are in full bloom, quality selection takes place in the field. To stimulate the growth of the bulbs, we cut off the flower heads. Depending on spring weather, we irrigate our tulip fields 2-3 times in spring.

NEW Hello, I am Joop and work as a tractor driver at Ruigrok Flowerbulbs. With various machines, I prepare our fields before planting. In the Fall, we start planting crocus and daffodils from late September on. The hyacinths follow and finally tulips. Depending on the weather, our last stocks are planted late November or sometimes early December. This Fall, we planted 255 acres of crocus, daffodils, hyacinths and tulips. That is more than 80 million bulbs! My tip: plant large cupped daffodils together with early tulips, both strong flowers that bloom the same time.

In the Summer and Fall we work with a large crew of temporary employees, that help us process our bulb orders. In Spring I specialize in keeping our hyacinth fields clean from bulb diseases or infections. I check our hyacinth fields until the harvest, which is vital to their quality. Bearded (Germanica)

Bearded Iris are not bulbs, but rhizomes. Unlike most spring bulbs and tubers, bearded iris do not need a cold period to produce flowers. This makes them ideal for areas with mild winters. As they are extremely drought tolerant they are also good for areas with little to no summer rain. Hardy in zones 3-10. Need a sunny position to bloom well. Do best in well drained soil, but will tolerate less drainage in drier areas.

LANDSCAPE Tips for planting spring flowering bulbs 1. Recommended planting time

through November • September through December • October November through December •

You may plant later than the recommended planting time, as long as it is prior to the first frost.

2. Planting depth and distance General rule is that the bulbs should be planted at a depth of double their height. Larger bulbs must be planted in an upright position in the planting hole. Smaller bulbs can be scattered. The spacing of the bulbs depends on the visual effect you are looking for. More details can be found on pages 96.

3. Soil conditions No particular soil is required for planting flower bulbs, as long it is well-drained. For best results, loosen the soil around 10” deep before planting and add some mulch, if the structure needs loosening. After planting, you may apply a slow acting fertilizer, like HOLLAND BULB BOOSTER. If the same area is used for Tulips and Hyacinths year after year, it is possible that Rhizoctonia will occur in the soil. To prevent the bulbs from being affected we advise to we advise to choosing a fresh planting location, or add Rizolex to the soil. 4. Choosing the right combination of bulbs The options for spring bulbs are vast and it is possible to achieve many different effects. In a successful bulb combination, both the colors and flower shapes are balanced. A classic bulb planting consists of at least 6 bulbs (tulips, daffodils & hyacinths) per square foot. When mixing tulips with perennials, you can use 3-4 bulbs per square foot. Hyacinths are often applied in classic flower beds. All varieties are roughly the same height, which gives a uniform and showy effect. Tulips and daffodils accent each other well due to their shapes and colors. The more natural looking daffodils in soft tones match well with the “royal” tulips in every possible color.

5. Perennializing Many bulbs are perennial and can be left in the the ground to return for years. You will find perennial types highlighted in the schedule on pages 80-81. Under the right circumstances the bulbs will soon multiply and come back in following years, like they have always been a part of the landscape. It is vitally important that the foliage is allowed to die down; the unkempt look of browning foliage that you may see (especially with daffodils) is all part of the process. Be sure to add a slow acting fertilizer when the bulbs emerge from the soil as well as after flowering.

6. Bulbs in lawns and grass strips Several bulb types are suitable for planting under grass. The earliest flowering types are the best choice, as the bulb foliage must be allowed to die down before mowing. Some bulbs like Chionodoxa, Scilla or Eranthis depend upon seeds for propagation. These seeds take about 6 -8 weeks after flowering before they are ripe. When the seeds fall from the plants, the mowing can start. Our suggestions: Chionodoxa luciliae . Crocus Species . Cocus Large-flowering . Eranthis cilicica . Fritillaria meleagris . Daffodils and Narcissi . Leucojum aestivum . Scilla siberica

LANDSCAPE 7. Planting bulbs on golf courses Mass plantings with Daffodils will create attractive blocks of color on golf courses during a time of year when nature is still at rest. The daffodils will return year after year. Colorful results can also be achieved with early Kaufmanniana Tulips, which will return for some years.

8. Mass plantings of bulbs in beds and borders To enjoy perennial and Rose borders earlier in the season, Spring flowering bulbs can be added. As a bonus, the perennials will later hide the withering leaves of the bulbs. Large plantings of Hyacinths, Daffodils and Tulips add a beautiful multi-color effect to the border. Tulips make a lovely combination with Wallflowers, Pansies, and Forget-me-nots.

9. Prolong the flowering period Flower bulbs can be planted in layers, both in containers as well as in garden soil. The bulbs that flower the earliest, like Crocus, should be planted over later flowering types like Tulips. You can also conduct larger informal plantings by mixing bulbs with different flowering times. This can be different types of Tulips, like our mixtures on page 8-13 or mixtures of different bulb types like e.g. Tulips, Miniature Narcissi and Muscari or small Alliums. Our longlasting Daffodil mixes can be found on page 42-45.

10. Bulbs in flower containers Flower containers are being used more and more to upgrade the appearance of urban areas and access roads. Bulbs can play an important role in container planting, as the flowering can start as early as February with Crocus. Plant bulbs in layers (the bulbs flowering last are planted at the lowest level) or work with removable inner containers. The flowers can be replaced when their blooming period is finished. During the winter, too much water is dangerous to the bulbs. We advise to placing containers on blocks, so that the excess water can freely flow away. Use a layer of clay granules at the bottom of the container and add a layer of compost between the bulb layers. When choosing bulb types, we advise selecting shorter flowering types as they are less susceptible to wind damage.
