FORCING PROCEDURES ARRIVAL AND STORAGE Please visually inspect the bulbs upon arrival. Bulbs should be firm, dry and free of excessive mould. Excessive mould will usually not be the basis of any forcing problems, but it is important to dry the bulbs off immediately by ventilating them with fans.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL IN THE COOLER Temperatures in the cooler are cricital for several reasons. Each cultivar has a minimum and optimum duration of cooling. Bulbs that do not receive enough cold will bloom too late and are likely to have various flowering abnormalities (green or bleached flower or petal tips, too short stems, etc).
STORAGE TEMPERATURE Non-precooled tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocus, dwarf iris and muscari are usually held ventilated at 68ºF (20ºC) until cooling starts. For pre-cooled bulbs it is essential that they are kept cool at the specified temperature so that the accumulation of cold stimulus is not interrupted(41-48ºF 5-9ºC).
Excessive early root growth leads to heaving problems and increases susceptibility to Trichoderma. For pot tulips we recommend in general to start cooling at 45ºF (7ºC) and reduce to 40ºF (4-5ºC) when bulbs are well rooted. Lower temperature to 33-34ºF (1ºC) when the shoots reach 1”. If the crop is putting on too many roots you should reduce temparature quickly. This also applies to reducing shoot growth.
SANITATION OF POTS AND EQUIPMENT Clean work areas, surfaces, trays and pots are essential for hassle-free forcing. Disease spores and resting structures can survive in soil residue and repeat infection in following crops. Between seasons trays should be disinfected with a desinfectant.
OPTIMUM COOLING TIME Each cultivar has an optimum cooling condition that also depends on its final use. Tulips grown for cut flowers need longer cooling than if the same cultivar is used for pots. As a general rule, spring bulbs flower faster, more uniformly and taller as the period of cooling increases. Due to the high light intensity in Norhern America, cut tulips tend to stay shorter. Therefore a cold period of 16-18 weeks is given. For pot tulips the average cold period is 13-15 weeks. Tulips size 11/12 cm will need 1 week less cooling and 1 week more in between temperature.
SOIL AND SUBSTRATE Plant into pasteurized, disease-free well-draining substrates with pH of 5.5-6.5, which are relatively low in fertility and cool to the touch. Weight is important as well: light weight mixes are favored but can cause the bulbs to push out of the soil, whereas too fine mixes hold too much water with the potential of root rot. SOIL TEMPERATURE When the bulbs are put into the 40-48ºF cooler, the soil temperature before planting should be low. Warm soil causes diseases.
A too short cooling period can cause problems in early forcing, In late season forcing too much cooling can result in rapid, weak and too tall growth, lack of of stem strength and small flowers. Therefore it is important to plant the bulbs during the right time frame.
MOISTURE CONTENT DURING PLANTING AND STORAGE The main issue with substrate moisture is in storage. Nearly all commercial mixes have wetting agents incorporated. Depending on the cooler, pots should be watered until full saturation before putting them into the cooler. Plants that are kept wet for the entire cold period will have longer roots and greater total root mass. Prevent the pots and trays from drying out by keeping the cooler floor wet.
In this catalog you will find the minimum cooling weeks, in between temperature weeks and earliest greenhouse date indicated below the image of every bulb variety, which will help you choose the best cultivar for your needs. These data should be used as guide lines only! GREENHOUSE TEMPERATURE The common temperature is 63ºF (17ºC) day and night for cut tulips. Early crops are usually grown somewhat warmer to speed development, whereas lower temperatures can reduce growth rate and delay flowers. Greenhouse temperature for pot tulips is 59ºF (15ºC).
HOW TO AVOID HEAVING OUT OF THE POT The phenomenon of bulbs lifting themselves out of the soil during initial root growth is caused by there not being enough weight above the bulbs. In Holland this problem is solved by covering the bulbs with 2-3” thick foam rubber, that holds the bulbs down when the next tray is placed on top. In North America, we tend to bury the bulbs, so they don’t heave up. If there is at least 1.5” of mix on the bulbs, heaving should not occur.
MORE INFORMATION The Flower Bulb Research Program has generated a large amount of information on research on forcing bulbs. This information is available online at www.flowerbulbs.cornell.edu.
