_ Graphic design is the process of creating something radically new from nothing. It’s the process of building experiences, and eventually creating tangible outcomes. Every project has a unique process of going from one point to the other. By enjoy every aspect of the process and its fleeting experience, I’m able to keep improving and growing. This book also presents my learning experience of coming from an industrial design background to evolving into a graphic designer. Each project represents a unique experience between me and a subject matter.

OBJECTIVE/
Casio is a Japanese electronic brand known for its watchmaking. The most iconic series was the calculator watch that has a special memory for people in the 80’s. Casio was the pioneer of making data accessible to people in any given situation. I developed an identity system that focused on emphasizing the aspect of futuristic technology and accessible data of Casio.

OBJECTIVE/
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s films can be easily recognized with quirky characters, exaggerate d color tones an d a tilt to ward surrealism. While his narratives are more adult, he still exhibits a childlike imagination. To celebrate this imagination and playfulness in his films, I decided to work with collage and a bright color palette to add a taste of playfulness.

PORTFOLIO
_ A hypothetical film festival project to celebrate the films of French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The objective is to coordinate a complex set of materials that must function together as a whole to capture the essence of the director and his filmmaking style. The visual system needs to be based on a common thread found in each of the director’s films.

OBJECTIVE/
I chose to design the three posters that explore the structure of pavilions. I think pavilions give architects the maximum freedom of creativity since they are a much smaller scale compared to regular buildings. The chosen three structures of pavilions are cubic, linear and round. To celebrate those three structures, I used wood, straw and wire mesh to construct the letterforms.

OBJECTIVE/
The topic I chose was about making mistakes, created for the purpose of encouraging myself and other people to make and also accept honest mistakes. I wanted to step outside of my own comfort zone while being experimental with the project and typography. The story I picked was called No Coincidence, No Story in episode 489, where they talk about different small coincidental stories submitted by their listeners. I chose the sign from the Groove, a vintage record store opened in 1996 on Mission street. My strategy was to give the record store a newer, more modern and energetic look by using abstract circles to represent the shape of records, and overlay of vibrant and saturated colors to showcase the excitement of music, and paired with a typeface that was similar to Helvetica.

_ Mom and dad, thank you for supporting me and always encourage me to pursue what I want for my life. Thank you for always being by my side even though we are miles apart. Your never stopped texting me every single day for the past five years to ask me how I’m doing and to make sure I’m safe. Without your love and support, I wouldn’t be able to live and study at a different country all by myself. I love you so much.
TO FAMILY/
Mary Scott, thank you for your guidance throughout the portfolio class to make sure I’m well prepared before stepping into to the real world. Phil Hamlett, thank you for encouraging and pushing me to do what I love for my thesis. Without your support I wouldn’t be able to reconnect with 3D printing at this level. David Scott, thank you for your guidance for my thesis and pushing my boundaries. Hunter wimmer, thank you for talking to me and telling me that I shouldn’t panic when I was having a hard time. And Christopher Morlan, Tim Carpenter, Sandra Isla Andrew Losel, John Nettelton, Kathrin Blatter, Bob Slote, Alexandra Rollo, thank you all for providing me the resource and supporting me to become a better designer.
TO INSTRUCTORS
Thank you all for your company and help through out this journey. For being supportive and caring along the road, giving me all kinds of valuable suggestions when I’m having a hard time making decisions. Special thanks to Selina, Cindy and Mingguo, I enjoyed our weekly dinner time after class.
