01.THE OVERHANG University of Pennsylvania, G2 Studio Fall 2018 Individual Work Instructor: Ben Krone By renovating original Red Hook Grain Terminal into a communicational housing complex, this project aims to provides artists and workers from multi-disciplines with efficient living places and interactive working communities. The Red Hook Grain Terminal is located at the mouth of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York. In this program, about 50,000 sq ft of the existing building are renovating into new construction with a diversified type of living units and shared public spaces.


At the beginning, an analog model that formed by rotating and connecting two boxes with curved stripes was used as module to express this project’s concept of linking different disciplines. By carving out existing columned granaries with extending shapes of stripes and inserting transformed modules into the building, quadrate rooms with efficient spaces, wide views, and opulent natural lights are hung out of the existing building as light additive structures.

Double-height spaces within original granaries are created between rectangular rooms with staircases, which followed the flows of cuts on building surfaces. As a result, different rooms can maintain their individualities by the separation of boxes.

As a residential complex designed for artists and workers, multiple types of housing units are modified to provide spaces for different studios. For example, lightened rooms with large floor heights can be used by sculptors and wood workers, when enclosed areas inside original cylinders provide dark spaces for photographers and media workers. Public opening rooms in the middle are arranged as co-working spaces for residents to composite large projects such as set designs and art installations. Then as a communicational circulation, the courtyard in the center with protrude studios is created to bring sunlight into solid interior and provide a platform of exhibitions to both residents and visitors.

01.GENERATOR University of Pennsylvania, G2 Studio Spring 2019 Group Work, Partner: Siyi Wang Instructor: Ben Krone Due to the constantly changing environment issues, on-going traffic congestion, and the increasing needs on efficiency in society, we believe the future of transportation should be more pedestrian focused. Under such circumstance, the amount and types of personal vehicles will gradually increase in the future and the city will have more safe space for pedestrian activities and things that not normally allowed with the existence of fast-speed transportation methods. This project is a hub for transportation policy education and personal vehicles advocacy. The building will act like a filter and a generator that creates a save shared “park� for pedestrian through program filtration, and stimulates the public moving forward toward future transport.

03.FLORAL CENTER University of Pennsylvania, G1 Studio Spring 2018 Individual Work Instructor: Joshua Freese By taking advantages of patterns generated from ornament and typical architectural frames of Philadelphia, this project is designed to bring curvilinear forms and circulations to the linear city grids. The patterns create not only the forms of main architectural complexes, but also the circulations between them which forced visitors to circulate around and experience the changing spaces.

When considering the limited rage of landscape and polluted empty spaces of the neighborhood, I’m seeking to establish an intergenerational topiary and urban green space along with a horticultural leaning center, which aims to not only engage the seasonal gardens with library, but also provide neighborhoods and visitors ability to further improve green spaces. As a result, the layered landscapes create different open gardens related to the site for circulation and activities, and the modified massing reflects interior programs, when creates a hierarchy for people viewing from different directions.

The library and horticultural center are seperated by a central passway, which also connects neighbourhoods on each side through the experience of decorated park. Continuous circulation for the library brings visitors experience of changing spaces inside architecture, when isolated green houses in horticultural center engages more with designed landscape to provides distinct environment for plants and multiple activity spots for people.

04.ENTROPIC EQUILIBRIUM University of Pennsylvania, G1 Studio Fall 2018 Individual Work Instructor: Danielle Willems This project aims to challenge current museum’s organization which arranged archives and collections in planned spaces. Both the site and the building are designed with details that refer to archaeology site, in order to highlight collections’ original qualities with environments by bringing visitors views and experiences of archaic spaces. Massing of theinterior spaces are defined by using packing geometries. Different scales and quantities of geometries are used in each group, in order to present the form from a simple massing to a pixel scale complex. This process also experience the changing situation from stable to chaos by breaking the whole into more parts. Interior programs of this project are arranged by the volumns of packing geometries. After dividing the geometrioes into differnt spaces by required areas, a general default skin is made to rape around the spaces, and provide the locations of floor plates as well. Archives are arranges on the ground floor and first floor, with division to provide both public and private spaces. The main gallery is located along the main circulation right after the entrance, with vertical circulations on each side. The educational space sits on top of the projects with a direct vertical access on the side.

05.CADANZA Ohio State University, Senior Studio Fall 2016 Individual Work Instructor: Kay Bea Jones The Cadenza Concert Hall is located around a naturally sunken site, where the scene of Strawberry Hill at the background can be viewed as an icon. The faceted exterior form makes the project a separation from its smooth natural landscape, and distinguishes the main building from two rectangular museums nearby. The organization of the overall spaces is a combination of different phenomena, which suggests that all parts of the project have their own identity and means of access, but each shares a relationship with each other by the continuous circulation inside. The main programmatic spaces are lifted up from ground by the platform above the plaza, with an artificial slope at one side to enter. The bridge behind is connected to the chamber hall on the mountain, with a circulation that gives visitors views of the concert hall and city from different angles. The overall project suggest a movement of the spaces, like the movement and free rhythm that contained in the “cadenza�.

The bridge connected to the chamber follows the extension of the artificial slope to bring a continuity of exterior circulation. The observational courtyard on top of the chamber refers to the the plaza in front of the entrance.

Faceted surfaces wrap around the whole project in different ways to separate it from the landscape and increase local enclosure. Glass surfaces are inserted to highlight the sense of wrapping.

Section

Main concert hall in terrace shape refers to the faceted surfaces outside to provide better sound resolutions, while the black box sit on another side shares a regular form with the educational space below.

06.U GEAR Ohio State University, Junior Studio Spring 2016 Individual Work Instructor: Robert Livesey This project aims to renovate the original Ohio State University Airport with a closed arranged master plan, which includes the adjustment of each functional unit, addition of required hangars, and the rational design of accesses and landscapes. The overall organization of the master plan follows a gear shape array, with concave spaces contained in each U shape piece. The porches opened to south hold the circulation from the city gird, outdoor parking lots and various landscapes, while the porches to north create serving spaces only for airplanes. Locations of trees, mounts and lawns are carefully designed in order to keep the continuity of solid forms, and form natural boundaries to separate public and private spaces. Main terminal and educational building are also designed with the U shape concept, which brings visitors attractions when approaching.
