The BMC Racing Team is a United States-registered UCI WorldTour team sponsored by BMC Switzerland. Ranked second in the world in 2014 and world champions of the team time trial, its 2015 roster comprises riders from 11 different nations, including world hour record holder Rohan Dennis, a pair of current time trial national champions – Taylor Phinney (United States) and Peter Velits (Slovakia) – a past world road champion, Philippe Gilbert (2012) – and 2008 Olympic road champion Samuel Sánchez. Consecutive 30-win seasons in 2013 and 2014 followed a Tour de France victory by Cadel Evans in 2011. The BMC Racing Team was founded in 2006 and is headquartered in Santa Rosa, Calif.

The BMC MTB Racing team is the leading team on the UCI XCO World Cup circuit. Founded in 2010 by Alex Moos, in 2014 it claimed the UCI XCO World and European Championship title with Julien Absalon (FRA) and for a second year in a row, the team was the most successful team in the UCI World Cup Series. What will 2015 bring? The mix of experienced riders and young, talented athletes is a perfect recipe for a winning team. The team will ride a Teamelite 01 hardtail 29er and a Fourstroke 01 full-suspension bike equipped with a Shimano XTR drivetrain, brakes and wheels.

At the beginning of 2014, the BMC Enduro Racing Team was formed. Since then, they have taken the Enduro World Series by storm and been on different podiums no less than 17 times and won 9 races. A relatively new sport but with growing popularity, Enduro mountain bike racing requires riders to be as talented in long, technical downhill riding as well as fit enough physically to ride fast in-between the stages to make tight time cut-offs. BMCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Micro Travel Technology (MTT) is the evolution of several generations of advanced cross-country weaponry. The progressive composite engineers of the Impec Lab spent two years developing and perfecting the function and performance of the system.

Micro-Travel Technology function is the result of the engineered performance of the chainstays and seatstays through complex carbon layups and the dual-guide, integrated XCell damper.

The queen of the legendary classics, Paris Roubaix, is infamous for its pavé. Multiple sections of rough, uneven cobbles place huge demand on both rider and bike. These harsh terrains call for something much tougher. We set out to find innovative solutions to ease the battering that our professional cyclists take on these brutal roads. We figured that if we can make their suffering more bearable, excellent results would soon follow.

It’s not easy to imagine compliance and stiffness working as one, but Tuned Compliance Concept does just this. The most advanced bikes are designed to be dynamic on the road and cutting-edge BMC engineers understand this as an opportunity in functional design.

The ultimate balance stiffness and vertical compliance Vertical compliance refers to the level of flexing on a bike frame. Combined with stiffness - it can consume up to 15% of a rider’s energy. Our Tuned Compliance Concept focuses on minimizing this impact by leveraging the technical know how and expertise gathered from years of bike design, to create the ultimate balance between comfort and performance for a ride that is both forgiving and fast.

Angle compliance

A traditional frame design consists of two triangles with straight elements, which are very stiff under compression, even if they are extremely thin. Adding bends, or angles, to those elements increases compliance immensely. With the use of angle compliance, the rear triangle can absorb and isolate impacts independent of the rest of the bike, whilst at the same time not affecting the rider. Angle compliance is also used at the seat post and the fork, where it helps to absorb hits of all sizes while remaining stable under braking.

Vertical compliance Thin and low seat stays, offset dropouts, carbon fork tips, and specifically designed seat post allow the frameset to flex vertically so that road forces, jarring hits, and sundry vibrations are not transmitted to the rider. Moreover, traction at the rear wheel is maintained no matter the road surface, keeping power transfer constantly efficient.

Once we have ensured that your ride is comfortable, what happens to the frame when you grind those pedals? Oversized downtubes, headtubes, chainstays and fork crowns, are combined with high-modulus carbon fibers to increase the lateral (side) stiffness of the frame. This improves the efficiency of power transferred from the rider to the bike. Not only that, but it also improves the torsional stiffness – making handling more intuitive, lighter, and more precise.

Active suspension is not a typical feature built into road bike frames. But this doesn’t mean that there is no suspension at all. In a very basic way all bike frames and forks flex, together with spokes, wheels, seat posts and saddles, handlebars and stems. We introduced thin, low seat stays, offset dropouts, carbon fork tips, and re-designed our seat post to allow the frameset to flex vertically, maximizing what we call angle compliance. In doing so, the disturbing sensations on your ride – the jarring hits, and rocky vibrations are not transferred directly to your body. Your rear wheel stays in contact with the ground, the ride becomes effortlessly fast, no matter how many Paris Roubaix and Flanders cobbled sections need to be conquered.

We took our inspiration from aeronautics. Tripwire for the air is created when special wind curbs are molded into the carbon frame, so that a slight amount of turbulence is created directly above the surface. A sort of air cushion forms a wind flow – making you faster.

ACE – 34,000 prototypes in just one year

If you want a 100% optimized bike frame, you’ll have to wait a very, very long time. At least this was the case before we developed ACE - the in-house computer software used daily by BMC’s engineers to digitally simulate each stage and iteration of a new carbon frame. With ACE, we develop virtual prototypes before cutting actual molds, compressing years of testing and prototyping into mere months at the Impec Lab in Grenchen, Switzerland.

With ACE technology, the most relevant performance characteristics of a race bike; weight, stiffness, and compliance, are combined in the best way possible to produce a unique ride and the ultimate in performance. Rather than physically prototyping every iterative stage during the engineering process, it allows us to speed up the evolutionary design process. Driven by more than 200 parameters such as cross-section dimensions, clearances, performance targets, our Finite Element Method (FEM) established a calculation model to determine the absolute real-world performance of the frame. Through complex computations, the characteristics of each iteration of frame design are realized and refined until the optimal combination of all parameters is found.

In 2011 we set out to advance our first-generation teammachine design. We soon realized that relying on human trial and error alone to improve a race bike of this caliber simply wasn’t going to cut it. Collaborating with experts in the field, we developed ACE, or Accelerated Composites Evolution Technology. Replacing traditional prototyping processes, the iterative, computer-modelling program produced more than 34,000 possible frame configurations in just one year. This information enables us to virtually optimize geometrical structure, cross-sections and carbon fiber lay-ups to ensure that any physical prototypes produced are as close to the finished product as possible, thus reducing development time by light years.

Picture yourself on your full suspension bike riding a pretty tough trail. After every sharp turn you accelerate. But, imagine if every time you do this, the suspension eats up your forward momentum, robbing you of your fun, and the rewards for your hard work.

When accelerating, an inertial force is generated which attempts to compress the shock system. Our APS solution counteracts this effect. It carefully calculates the pivot points of the rear suspension so that inertial force generated under acceleration is not misdirected into compressing the shock, instead, the chain tension compensates for this effect. As a result, all the pedal power is used for propulsion without any loss of energy through the suspension. The shock system ensures optimum traction, and therefore ensures that power is transferred to the ground.

Traction To achieve just the right amount of travel for each of our distinct models we optimized the leverage ratio, ensuring the optimal balance between progression and small bump sensitivity.

Our solution to finding the optimal pivot placement, APS achieves this through iterative calculations in order to fine-tune such suspension characteristics as leverage ratio, axle path, and the amount of kickback. The unified rear triangle is linked to the main frame by two short links, with the upper link actuating the shock. The result is a light, stiff and compact structure. Impacts are absorbed by the shock system, providing excellent comfort for the rider.

A well-designed full suspension bike offers the control and confidence to ride a trail without hesitation. Ideal suspension systems maximize pedaling efficiency without compromising the ability to soak up the bumps. Our solution is the Advanced Pivot System (APS) which optimizes kinematics and pivot placements, leverage ratios, axle paths and shock dimensions. Iterative calculations fine-tune all the suspension properties of each of our distinctive full-suspension models to achieve the best ride characteristics for any terrain. We listened to their needs before digging into our bag of engineering tricks to elevate the Teammachine SLR01’s performance to a new level. With our ACE technology, we accelerated the normal design and engineering process and ran an unprecedented 34,000 computer-generated prototypes to find the frame our riders wanted with the perfect balance of stiffness and lightness. The end result is the Teammachine SLR01 — offering what we call, “acceleration redefined.”

Lightweight The Teammachine SLR01 is the lightest bike in the BMC lineup. The frame weighs a feathery 790 grams, and only 1380 grams as a frameset (see details), putting it amongst the lightest framesets commercially available. The Teammachine SLR01’s high-level stiffness enables stunning acceleration, even while climbing the steepest grades. The Grand Tour-winning Teammachine SLR01 geometry provides excellent agility, maximum control, and sure-footed confidence on the fastest descents and tightest switchbacks. ACE technology BMC replaced traditional prototyping processes with superpowerful Accelerated Composites Evolution (ACE) technology. With this unique iterative computer-modeling program, over 34,000 possible frame configurations were analyzed to optimize the bike’s geometrical structure, tube cross-sections, and carbon layup. The final result is the Teammachine SLR01: a bike that embodies the perfect combination of weight, stiffness and vertical compliance to deliver the ultimate pro tour-worthy ride. Integration We use our BMC proprietary hinge fork to boost steering precision, responsiveness and aerodynamics, while at the same time integrating a fully adjustable stem system. Even without brakes or gearing, BMC engineers examined every minute detail of the bike in order to give its rider the crucial advantage when time counts to milliseconds, and drag counts in milligrams. Adjustability Because athletes can only perform at their best when they are properly fitted on the bike, we are convinced that adjustability is crucial to a bike’s performance. Our new p2p track stem comes complete with two length spacers and is infinitely adjustable around its axis. The stem is available in two different versions, the shortest of which is dedicated to pursuit racing.

Stiffness Originally conceived as a more economical race bike, we became convinced during the design phase that a well-made aluminum frame with a carbon fork and seatpost could perform at the highest levels of track racing. By getting the weight of our aluminum frame within UCI requirements, we found that it was just as stiff and capable as its high-end carbon version. Aerodynamics The carbon fork and seatpost are aerodynamically shaped and optimized for track use with minimal tire clearance. The flattened down tube and lowered seat stays offer the perfect balance of stiffness and optimal aerodynamic performance.

If there is just one category the Fourstroke 01 fully belongs to, this is quite simply mountain biking.

The fourstroke FS01 full carbon dropouts are designed for a 12x142 mm through-axle system and are assembled with specific Shimano or Sram direct-mount derailleur hangers depending on the groupset. The brake caliper attachment follows the 160 mm Shimano postmount standard.

Agile The short chain stays, short stem and low bottom bracket are the keys to the agility you experience on the Trailfox. This agile feel, together with the sure-footedness of the big wheels allows you to own the terrain on a whole new level. Crafty features A clever internal cable-routing system allows any configuration you could wish for. Our proprietary chain management system is engineered to ensure you never drop a chain. A low standover height adds even more confidence, but we still found enough room for a piggy-back shock and bottle cage. For those who want to ride a single chain ring, the front mech mount can be removed and ISCG mounts to accommodate a chain guide. Because the mountain bike cockpit is so critical for the bike’s input and handling, we developed our own handlebar as part of the Big Wheel Concept for the Trailfox.

The new design had to be faster: faster than all previous BMC urban bicycles, faster than the competition, and faster than you might expect possible of a commuter bicycle with flat bars. Many bicycles are available in the urban, fitness, commuter speed and flat bar road bike segments, but if you want to pick the fastest bike, the benefits of our new Alpenchallenge AC01 should be obvious.

Turns faster Our carbon and aluminum forks were designed in conjunction with the frame, and dimensioned specifically for our ideal fender, tire and wheel sizes. We minimized the fork length, steepened the frame’s head angle and optimized the fork’s trail dimension to achieve quicker steering while retaining confidence-inspiring stability. Climbs faster By careful design and material selection, our engineers reduced frame weight by over 500 grams compared to the previous generation. At the same time, lateral and torsional stiffness also increased, resulting in a far more efficient chassis. Adapts faster Proprietary Curana fenders can be installed or removed in seconds, allowing riders to change faster than the weather. Aftermarket fenders can be bolted directly to the frame and fork, eliminating noisy, heavy adaptors.
