I mentioned this film in March’s Borderlines preview but now on general release it merits fuller attention not least as yet another tour de force from Isabelle Huppert – who also starred in director Jean-Paul Salomé’s last film, MAMA WEED – initially unrecognisable in a blonde hair-do, playing the real-life union rep at a nuclear plant threatened with huge job losses. After being physically attacked for standing up to dark forces at work there, a corrupt police investigation has her vilified, then prosecuted for supposedly fabricating this. There are vague similarities to Mike Nichols’ 1983 SILKWOOD here but Huppert, who I yield to no-one in my admiration of, conveys an intensity and multi-layered sensitivity that Meryl Streep never quite managed in that nuclear plant drama and being based on fact, LA SYNDICALISTE chillingly subtexts the structure of a hazardous, highly secretive industry.
