THE GEORGE & DRAGON

4, Broad Street, KNIGHTON

Some may say, opening a pub and restaurant in today’s climate is foolhardy and doomed to fail, with roaring food and energy costs, however, Justin and Helen Rees with their charismatic son Ieuan have burst back into the trade taking back their pub after a 5-year time out. Determined to restore Knighton’s favourite tourist attraction they enlisted the best builders. The combination of Justin and Helen’s vision produced a “Pheonix from the fire” effect on what was a neglected, tired space. The transformation is amazing and now stands proud as the “Go to place” in Knighton. With an outside area and cosy corners, it’s the perfect place to relax.

Justin and Helen have run this Inn for over 15 years, and they have maintained five beautiful en-suite rooms available for Bed and Breakfast coupled with great cask Ales and a mouth-watering selection of lagers and spirits. Behind the bar you will be welcomed by Rhi, Deb, Ieuan, Justin or Helen. The George and Dragon bar never fails to manifest sporadic laughter with a safe, respectful atmosphere.

In the mornings the doors open to “Coffi Clawdd” Helen’s coffee shop running Tuesday to Saturday from 10am till 14.30pm, offering freshly baked scones, cakes and gluten free alternative to compliment your excellent rich bean latte. Offering a diverse menu of baguettes, paninis and ploughman’s lunches, it’s becoming a favourite place to gather and relax.

Justin and Helen really wanted something a bit special when it came to the cuisine, they secured British Guild of Chefs decorated Malcolm Campbell, who had been Head Chef for seven years at the Lakeside Golf Course in Garthmyl, Newtown. Ex-Army catering officer, Microbiologist and triple medal winning finalist of the national and International Chef of the Year representing the British Forces, Malcolm has joined the George and Dragon team with an immense repertoire of culinary creation which has spanned over 32 years, from the Grand Hotel in Brighton to a tent in Nairobi cooking for our troops. “We are quickly gaining the reputation for excellent cuisine and consistent standards, of which I am very pleased about, but we are especially proud of our vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options of which we have over 20 on our menu that is a 7-page turner.” No more feeling awkward or rejected, all our customers are VIP, and I will personally take care of their every requirement.” Malcolm Campbell.

The George and Dragon have made some ripples in Knighton with Indian, Thai and Chinese theme nights, Carvery Sundays, German, French, American and British cuisine, plus menu requests and private table dining! Now with a reputation of the best fish and chips in town, nothing can stop this team as they welcome customers from a further afield through the best source possible, being Broad Sheep.

The George and Dragon are a team who are determined to lead by example, for eating and drinking establishments in Powys, both in price and quality, nestled in a lovely respectful ambiance which is perfect for an afternoon tea, a family birthday party, a good old night out, or some fine dining.

CHEVALIER (12A)

Historic dramas have gained much currency in recent years – think THE FAVOURITE, BRIDGERTON, BELLE – and director Stephen Williams

(TV’s WESTWORLD) has excelled in bringing the unlikely but true 18th century tale of the half-caste son of a slave-girl and her master to the big screen. The opening scene in which the titular hero, and gifted violinist, upstages Mozart at his own concert is sensational but then flashes back to his harsh boyhood on a Guadalupe plantation so we might understand what drives him and what he must conquer to become what one French journalist called ‘the most amazing man of this century’. Along the way Chevalier who was also a supremely talented dancer, fencer, intellectual and composer beds beautiful women and champions underdogs and Kevin Harrison Jnr (CYRANO, ELVIS) brings this extraordinary character to life with great gusto… and a wonderful supporting cast.
