2020 may be the year of abundant inventories and super shoes. / By Mark Sullivan

S

tability returned to the running business in 2019, and by that we don’t mean the category of shoes. This past year saw a continued strengthening in the run specialty channel, following a few years of store closures, acquisitions and low-level chaos in the business as stores and brands grappled with the impact of internet sales and direct selling by vendors. Industry analysts say overall business in the channel will grow about five percent this year. That number does not compare favorably with the consecutive years of 6

runninginsight.com

double digit increases of the past decade, but compared to other retail channels, running specialty remains strong heading into 2020. In fact, the channel may have grown even further in 2019 had it not faced product shortages from four of the key suppliers to the channel. Brooks, Hoka One One, On and New Balance all could not meet retailer demand for their products in 2019. Brooks’ delivery issues are well documented. The company’s move to a new distribution center in Indiana this year

has been a nightmare, to put it mildly. Brooks enjoys an overall market share of close to 30 percent in the channel, which means for most stores one out of every four shoes they sell is a Brooks. Because of problems with the new DC, Brooks has been unable to ship orders to stores, especially smaller orders, on a timely basis. Stores tried a variety of coping mechanisms. Naperville Running Co. ordered a large shipment of shoes and then doled them out to other accounts who couldn’t get their orders fulfilled.

What’s Next? (continued) For Brooks, the snafu couldn’t have come at a worse time. The company’s product development engine has been rolling with new product that has been very well received by retailers and consumers. But unfortunately, retailers have not been receiving orders. Brooks has begun work on an additional distribution facility in Indiana and has told retailers they hope they will be back on track by Q1 2020. Brooks’ issues have opened the door for other suppliers to gain share and New Balance, Hoka One One and On have all continued their strong growth momentum through 2019. Because of this growth, these brands struggled at times to meet demands on key styles. “We forecasted strong growth, but never imagined it would be at the level it was,” says Ted Goodlake, of On. Hoka has greatly expanded its assortment in run stores. Several years ago the brand’s Clifton and Bondi accounted for 80 percent of its unit sales in specialty, according to VP– sales and marketing Lee Cox. Today, nine SKUs make up two thirds of the brand’s business in run specialty. Specialty retailers have grown accustomed to a high level of service from brands, including small fill-in shipments and special orders. In 2019, for a variety of reasons, brands were unable to keep up. Heading into 2020, retailers may be more aggressive on their ordering, which could lead to an over abundance of inventory in the market if sales slow down. Product innovation from brands has been a a key factor 8

The Running Event 2019 in Austin, TX will be the first and best place for the run specialty business to see what’s ahead in 2020.

in the strong performance of run specialty. It’s been true at the $25 price point with sunglasses from GoodR and with higher end massage products from Hyperice and Addaday. And it’s been very obvious in the biggest category for run specialty: footwear. Brands across the board have refined their designs, worked on updates and in certain cases created new shoes that have stirred controversy, driven media coverage and rung the cash register. The most “controversial” shoe is Nike’s Vaporfly, which was worn by a number of high-profile runners, including Geoffrey Kamrowor when he set a men’s half marathon record in September; Brigid Kosgei, the Kenyan who set a women’s marathon record in Chicago this fall; and Eliud Kipchoge when he broke the two-hour mark for the

marathon distance, albeit not in an official race. T h e p e r fo r m a n c e by these world class athletes in Vaporflys is clearly having an impact on recreational marathoners. A recent story in the Wall Street Journal said of the 15,000 Strava users who ran in the five Abbott World Marathon majors in 2019, more than 1000 wore Nike’s Zoom Vaporfly or Next% models, which cost about $250 a pair. The Nike Vaporfly contains a carbon fiber footplate, a technology that is also used by Hoka One One, New Balance and Skechers. The idea behind the carbon plate is that it offers “spring” to runners, which allows them to exert less energy while running faster. Nike says this technology will increase runners’ speeds by 4.2 percent and other researchers say the recreational runners

can benefit more from this technology than elite runners. What makes the Vaporfly both newsworthy and influential is that it offers runners the promise that it can make them go faster. It also opens up the $200-plus price point for run specialty stores. If shoes can make you go faster, what else can they do? In 2020 Nike and other brands will introduce shoes they say can prevent injuries. Running shoe companies are tapping into consumers’ imaginations in a way they have not done since the barefoot trend in 2009. That movement sparked great growth in the running business and the super shoes of 2020 may well do the same. This past year also saw a major step forward by run specialty stores in their social media game. Instagram has become standard marketing for most run specialty retailers. They use it to promote events, celebrate successes of their customers and to promote new products as they hit the stores. For many run stores, Instagram is the great equalizer against bigger retail competitors and also the brands who sell direct. It is a low-cost, high-impact, visual way for them to connect with their communities. The better stores are using it well and becoming increasingly savvy about it. “Specialty is not a channel, it’s an experience,” says Cox, of Hoka. Instagram and social media are allowing stores to emphasize what makes them special as they head into 2020 and make it clear that the experience begins before customers walk into the door. n © 2019 Diversified Communications

NEW PRODUCT SHOWCASE CORRECT TOES Toe Spacers Correct Toes were designed by sports podiatrist and elite distance runner Dr. Ray McClanahan, who was unsatisfied with the inconsistent and temporary results offered to patients through conventional symptom management techniques: orthotics, medication, and surgery. Further frustrated with his own persistent foot pain and recurring running injuries, Dr. Ray became determined to cure the root cause of the foot problems rather than settle for symptom management. Through clinical experience, literature review, footwear analysis, and observations of unshod elite runners, Dr. Ray realized the powerful healing effect of rehabilitating and strengthening the feet. He learned that natural toe splay is an essential component of longterm foot health. Ultimately, he developed Correct Toes, customizable and comfortable toe spacers that enabled his patients to combat and prevent common foot problems. With this new approach, Dr. Ray reversed his own foot problems as well as those of thousands of patients. www.correcttoes.com

The Mythos Elite TRX utilizes the revolutionary Transposed Running Xperience technology: a new and surprisingly simple concept that enables pronation control for only those that need it by simulating the presence of a traditional medial side dual density system and achieving the same end result via the subtraction of a section of the lateral side midsole. This technology allows neutral footstrike runners to remain neutral and not force to the outside of the foot but also works to help slow down the inward roll of overpronated footstrikers. Pro-Tec Athletics Activates Better Recovery With Innovative Technology Running Insight catches up with Pro-Tec Athletics CEO Jeff Rodgers Tell us a little about Pro-Tec Athletics and what defines the brand? Pro-Tec Athletics has been a leader in sports medicine since 1991. We have been able to maintain our edge for 28-plus years by consistently introducing new specialized supports and massage therapy products to help athletes recover better. Our mission is simple — to keep people healthy, active and performing their best. To do this we maintain the highest level of innovation, execution and customer service by bringing passion, positive energy and integrity to our work. What makes Pro-Tec Athletics stand out above the rest? We distinguish ourselves as a premium brand at a reasonable price, which puts us in the sweet spot of retail. At a product level, we differentiate ourselves by making products with unique designs from the highest quality materials. For our Injury Support category we customize each compression pad by density and shape for the specific injury it targets. Our 3D Flat Compression Line is made from a $150,000 Italian sewing machine that provides advanced flat knit stitching to better shape the fabric and fit. In massage, we were the first to introduce the Orb® 5-inch massage ball. Building on its success, we launched our Extreme™ line of products, the Orb Extreme, Orb Extreme Mini, RM Extreme and RM Extreme Mini, all produced from a patented injection mold process. On top of our premium products, we provide premium service to our retail partners. With our revamped B2B website experience, knowledgeable staff and sales reps, and innovative marketing differentiators, we continue to foster and nurture our business relationships. What innovations has Pro-Tec Athletics come out with the past couple of years? The Pro-Tec product line-up (top to bottom): Each year, Pro-Tec analyzes how we can RM Extreme™, 3D Flat Knee, NEW Orb® Activate

grow our assortment to benefit runners, or improve upon our existing assortment by making small impactful changes. Key innovations include the RM Extreme, a handheld roller massager, and the travel size version, the RM Extreme Mini. Both massage tools take recovery to a whole new extreme through a contoured surface design to effectively target muscle areas. The non-flexible design lets you control the compression level and provides an exceptional deep tissue massage for recovery on-the-go. Both are made from an injection mold process to ensure effective durability and longevity. Can we expect any exciting new products in the near future? Absolutely! In a couple weeks, Pro-Tec Athletics is releasing the highly anticipated Orb Activate, a vibrating massage ball. With three vibration settings – low, mid and high – the user can fully control the intensity level for muscle recovery in the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, gluteus and more. The 4.5-inch diameter and spherical shape allows for a multi-directional roll that targets areas with ease and precision, while the rubberized on/off area provides a comfortable rolling surface. No hard plastic here! 1.5 hours to fully charge with universal USB charger for four-plus hours of continued use. It is also lighter than most vibration products, allowing for a quick “grab and go” travel companion. Come December, get ready to activate better recovery with the Orb® Activate! Anything else you want to touch on? We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that we are a specialty brand. That means, for us specialty comes first. We offer exclusive features, advance product launches ahead of the rest of the market, provide customized programs and assortments and jump at the opportunity to get involved with retail locations through event co-ops and more. During a time of big-box and online expansion, our specialty relationships are our top priority. Let us show you the specialty difference!

The Shape of Things to Come With a new GM and a new HQ, Altra readies to take a big step forward. / By Mark Sullivan

I

t’s been a whirlwind for the Altra brand since it was founded in 2011. In less than 10 years the company has been sold twice, including last year’s purchase by VF Corp. Then one year ago, VF hired respected industry veteran Todd Dalhausser as president and put him in charge of overseeing the brand’s move to a new VF headquarters in Denver. Dizzy yet? There’s more. And much more to come, according to Dalhausser, who has hired new senior executives in charge of sales and product and changed the company’s vernacular to “Balanced Cushioning” from “Zero Drop.” “When you think about Zero Drop, it’s two negative words,” Dalhausser tells Running Insight. “It’s also associated with minimalism and that’s not us.” Balanced Cushioning, says Dalhausser, really captures the essence of Altra’s footwear, which since the company’s inception has won accolades for its performance and comfort and pointed critiques for its aesthetics. The cosmetics of Altra’s footwear designs have improved over the past few years and Dalhausser says further improvements will be forthcoming quickly. In April, the company hired Andrew Connolly as senior director of global product. Connolly was most recently at Hoka, where he was credited with streamlining that brand’s clunky core silhouette and building out a range of products that has helped propel its growth. At Altra, Connolly is charged with building off Altra’s strength of fit and comfort and expanding its business in the road running and women’s categories. The women’s category is an urgent focus for Dalhausser, who was most recently at Saucony, a brand that over indexed with women and is now at a brand that he admits woefully “under indexes.” This is an important part of Altra’s growth 42

strategy, particularly at run specialty where women’s shoes account for six of

the top 10 selling SKUs. Still Dalhausser believes Altra brings a number of advantages to the women’s business. Since its founding, the brand has invested in separate tooling for women’s sizes. “It’s more expensive to do that,” he says, “but worth it because it provides better fit.” Altra has attempted to promote that benefit with a “Fit4Her” campaign. Dalhausser says, “We have not done a great job communicating that,” but promises that will change in 2020. Last year, Altra signed Kara Goucher as an endorser and also has lawyer-turned obstacle racer Amelia Boone and ultra marathoner Amanda Basham under contract. Dalhausser says all of Altra’s agreements with women offer “maternity

Altra’s Shape of Things To Come (continued) protection,” which pay the full amount should the athletes go on maternity leave. Nike recently came under criticism for reducing pay of women athletes while they were on maternity leave and has since changed its policy. “We are proud to support women and motherhood,” Dalhausser says. “We always want to show our full support of and investment in women, and our goal is to meet her where she is at — from the gym, to the road and on the trail. We will continue to drive through run specialty our three points of difference, which is F it 4H e r Te c h n o l o g y, Balanced Cushioning and Foot Shaped Toe-box.” In addition to the women’s business, Altra will also look to grow its road running business. The brand is well established in the trail and hiking categories, but Dalhausser knows for the brand to grow it will need to break through as a running brand. “We have a 2.5 percent share in run specialty, so we have plenty of runway.” In addition to Connolly, Altra has rounded out its leadership team by hiring Chuck Ponthier as senior director of sales to join with company founders Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead, who made the move to Denver with the brand. “In making the move, we tried to be respectful of the brand culture and we are really fortunate to have two co-founders still with us.” 44

runninginsight.com

Altra is turning to established runners Amanda Basham, Amelia Boone and Kara Goucher to help build its brand at run specialty. One major benefit of the sale, according to Dalhausser, is the ability to make use of VF Corp’s supply chain resources. “Now that we are fully transitioned under VF’s platform, we have seen significant improvement in our supply chain and deliveries. We have shortened our lead times, we have better analytics to right inventory at the right time, we have improved our on-time shipping by 30 percent and we now have the right product in stores at the right time.” To accomplish its ambitious goals, Dalhausser says the brand will stay focused on the specialty channel. “Retail staff and store personnel are the number one vehicle in reaching consumers,” Dalhausser says. “We are going to show significant investment in the importance of our tech rep team, connecting with staff and the consumer on a more frequent one-on-one basis.” The company will also use its website to drive traffic to stores and try to stay true to its heritage as a disruptive brand while continuing to grow. “We need to compete in an incredibly competitive marketplace and I love our positioning. It’s a great time to be a running consumer right now.” n © 2019 Diversified Communications

The Case of the Missing Hat A tale of how we need others to survive, especially in the run specialty business. / By Tom Griffen

W

hether you are an independent retailer or affiliated with a larger organization, when you unlock your shop’s doors in the morning, it’s all you. You and that space you’ve put your entire heart into. That moment in time is pretty special, isn’t it? When I had my store, this daily instant in the darkness was usually marked by me fumbling with my keys. But it was always an awakening. I’d turn the bolt, enter my shop and flip the lights on to illuminate my hard work. A wall of shoes stacked in wait, racks of apparel and accessories wakefully glowing. Everything suddenly alive. For a brief second, it was like day one all over again. Remember day one? That quiet, fearful thrill of an unknown future. This is, undoubtedly, an important place to start a journey. But make no mistake, if your retail undertaking is an island venture – which is to say, one solely dependent on you and only you – it’s far less rewarding over time. We need to include others in our successes and failures if we want to make what we do matter. To illustrate this, I’d like to share a story. One about a hat. A floppy, straw hat that kept the sun off my face as I walked across America. It had a flexible but firm brim that created a cool ring of shade over the top half of my body. I often referred to it as my silly hat, mostly because that’s how I felt with it atop my head. I even met a guy, a fellow roadside traveler, who called it my go-tohell hat, which, according to him, was how I should respond to anyone giving me grief about its ridiculousness. Under the circumstances, my hat was wildly functional. Enough so that I disregarded its anti-fashion. As I neared Chattanooga, I found myself on a shoulder-less, one-lane road during rush hour. A police officer was 46

dispatched by a driver who called 911, and when he finally caught up to me he gave me two options: “You can stay on this road and continue to risk your life,” he said, “or you can throw all your stuff in my cruiser and come with me to the nearest safe spot. You decide.” I had a no-ride rule. Only time I’d make an exception was if safety was an issue. And based on how the officer framed his question, I figured this might be a special case. So I threw my stuff in the back of his vehicle and took a short ride to where the road opened up. He helped me retrieve my gear, we took a selfie and off he went. I soon found a place to stay, ate two dinners, and was asleep by eight. Standard operating procedure. As I got situated the next morning, I realized my hat was missing. I racked my brain trying to figure where it could be. Then it dawned on me — I must have left it in the police cruiser. I pulled up the photo of the cop and was able to zoom in close enough to make out his name. I went

to the police department’s Facebook page and wrote a review of my previous day’s experience, mildly fretting about my lost hat. The post appeared on my page and a friend in Austin took action. She had a buddy in Tulsa who had retired from the Chattanooga police department. And, as she said, “Maybe he knew someone who could help.” Meanwhile, the Chattanooga police department’s social media director was on it, too. And before long, my friend’s Tulsa connection got a fire lit under the hat situation. All this happened as I walked eastward, watching all the bustle from the roadside sidelines. As I marched beneath the scorching sun, a random passerby stopped to ask about my journey. He said he was surprised I wasn’t wearing a hat in the painful heat. I filled him in on my headwear shenanigans, then he insisted he buy me a new one. He returned with a selection of hats from a local outfitter. Told me to pick one. Said he’d return

the rest. Suddenly I was back to walking with the sun off my face. I was fifteen miles east of Chattanooga when I finally heard back from the police department. My floppy hat had been located. The officer I met the day before had found it hidden between his cruiser’s back seats. He was now out looking for me. In fact he’d been out looking for me for hours. The department representative made it clear that this was all extremely unprecedented. I gave my location, and soon an SUV cruiser wheeled up, the officer laughing as he waved my hat out the window. He eyeballed the new hat on my head. I told him, “Oh man, you’re not going to believe this…”

He pulled over to do the exchange. As he got out he brandished a floppy hat of his own. Said it’s his fishing hat — that he’d stopped at his house to grab it so we could take another selfie. This time both of us in our go-to-hell hats. “Something for the PR department,” he said. All this helpful effort and commotion over my silly hat. Here’s the point: We need others in order to be successful. And others need us in order to feel like they are part of something. Hopefully, when you apply this to your shop, you’ll let go of the reins you’ve white-knuckled for so long and give someone else a chance to shine. To get a chance to also don that silly hat of yours for a while. n

ALTRA PROVISION 4 The Altra Provision 4 is a completely updated version of the previous models and provides a medial GuideRail and a 27mm stack height. It also features a unique new arch feature that uses proprioception to help slow pronation and neutralize the step cycle, thus offering support only when needed and without interrupting the natural stride. Neutral runners or “stability shoe only” wearers will appreciate this fresh approach to guided, natural foot movement. MSRP $130.

ASICS GLIDERIDE The ASICS Glideride is a neutral, long-distance running shoe that combines a soft landing zone to lessen fatigue and a curved sole design. These elements help increase running efficiency by reducing ankle movement. MSRP $150.

BEACHBODY COMMIT AMARA The Beachbody Commit Amara features rubber lateral pods on the outsole for improved traction and stability during side-to-side movements. The wrapped construction of the one-piece, elastic ankle collar offers fit and comfort, and full-length EVA compression foam provides cushioning for intense, high-impact workouts. MSRP $74.95.

MSRP $130.

DIADORA MYTHOS ELITE The new Diadora Mythos Elite TRX high-cushion shoe utilizes Transposed Running Xperience technology. This allows neutral footstrike runners to remain neutral and not force to the outside of the foot and also works to help slow down the inward roll of over-pronated footstrikers. MSRP $160.

GRAVITY DEFYER GRAVITY DEFYER XLR8 The Gravity Defyer XLR8 RUN features a VersoCloud, a multi-density nucleated polymer sole that reduces fatigue and plantar stress. Full perimeter shanking corrects pronation by guarding the ankle, lateral, medial and transverse arches against hyperflexion. MSRP $160.
