Now is a great time to start a new exercise program with the weather being a little cooler. If you are currently not exercising, why not start a walking program. Walking is one of the easiest ways to become more physically active. You can do it almost anywhere and at any time. Walking is also inexpensive. All you need is a good pair of running or walking shoes and the desire to get started. A few benefits of walking are: n Gives you more energy n Makes you feel good n Helps you to relax n Reduces stress

n Helps you sleep better n Tones your muscles

n Helps control your appetite

n Increases the number of calories your

body uses.

Running Zone Foundation has three group workouts per week. You can see the workouts on our Workout Calendar on the front page of Running Zone’s website. Also, if you need some help starting your walking program, please contact one of the members of Running Zone at (321) 751-8890. We can help you get started. You will be happy you did! Best Wishes for a Great New Year,

Meet Alexa Baker. The 8-year-old Longleaf Elementary third grader is friendly, fun and fast! On Dec. 4, she competed against the nation’s swiftest girls in her age group at the 2011 AAU National Cross Country Championships held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World. Alexa ran 2,000 meters in seven minutes and 52 seconds (6:19/mile) finishing seventh out of 72 of her peers. She was also Florida’s top finisher in the age group. It was an extra amazing accomplishment when you realize that the speedy sprite had to beg her dad to let her race for the first time less than two years ago. “Last February (2010), Running Zone sent out a notice asking for school support for the Cheetah Chase 3K,” said her dad, Scott Baker, who taught physical education at Longleaf at the time but now teaches and coaches cross country at Kennedy Middle School. “I put up one of their posters and printed out about 300 applications.” Baker was surprised when his then 6-year-old daughter said she also wanted to participate. “I told Alexa I didn’t think she could do it,” said Baker. “The first

graders only jogged maybe 200 meters at a time. She persisted so I told her that if she could complete a mile in 10 minutes, she could do the race and I’d walk and jog it with her.” With her father pacing her, Alexa ran the10-minute mile - chatting the entire time. “When we got home I told my wife ‘I think Alexa can run,’” Baker laughed. Santa’s first stop by Patti Sponsler

Santa’s first stop this season was in Satellite Beach on Dec. 17 to meet and greet many of the 1,400+ participants in the Jingle Bell 2-miler. He also stuck around to offer a hearty “ho ho ho” and “congratulations” to the award winners. The jolly old man’s handshake was as familiar as the festively lit course was to Melbourne Beaches James Post. The 20-year-old University of North Florida junior blew through the finish line in nine minutes and 46 seconds, nailing his third consecutive win but not dropping the 9:38 course record which he had set in 2008. After hitting the first mile in 4:57, Post dropped the hammer to negative split his second mile in 4:49, leaving Chris Rego and Michael Fisher behind to duke it out for second. Melbourne’s Rego, who had clocked the first mile split one second behind both Post and Fisher, hit the line a couple of leg lengths ahead of Fisher to take second place. Rego, who was the 2008 Running Zone Foundation Race Series champion and Fisher, the current Series points leader, clocked almost identical chip times of 9:56.1 and 9:56.7 respectively. In the women’s race, Indialantic’s Angela Cobb took the win and set a new course record as she zipped across the timing mat in 10:47. “I wasn’t even thinking of a course record,” said Cobb who had also set a course record on Nov. 13 with her 1:20:12 victory at the 13.1 (Half-) Marathon in Fort Lauderdale. “I was focused on trying to stay near Doug Butler.” Satellite Beaches Jessica Crate, who had set the previous course record of 10:57 in 2010, dropped her time by three seconds this year to 10:54 and taking second place. Melissa Taylor, of Indian

Harbour Beach, placed third in 11:33. Melbourne’s Doug Butler and Palm Bay’s Jackie Clifton took the Masters (40+) titles with their respective 10:39 and 12:25 finishes. The Jingle Bell 2-miler was race number four in the seven-race Running Zone Foundation Race Series which is offering this season’s speediest a piece of the $10,000 prize purse. Those vying for overall Series awards must run a minimum of four of the seven events. Coming up next in the Series is Brevard Zoo’s Raptor Run 3K kicking off from the Brevard Zoo in Viera at 7:30 a.m. on March 3. You never know what kind of beasts and birds you may see on the 1.8-mile family friendly romp through Zoo property! All participants will receive a great tech race shirt; a delicious post-race breakfast catered by Morning Star Café’ and 50% off admission to the Zoo on race day for those who wish to stick around and enjoy a fun day with the animals.

Kim Hunger encourages her son, Luke, as he crosses the finish line of the free Santa’s Lil’ Helper Kids’ Run that followed the Jingle Bell 2-miler. There were so many tiny tots who wanted to toddle that multiple waves had to be set up!

Feeling lucky? There will also be a random giveaway for one-day Disney tickets and one hotel night stay for two! Complete Raptor Run 3K information and registration is available at http://www. runningzone.com/series/news/357 or call Running Zone at 321-751-8890.

Eight-year-old Alexa Baker, # 66, runs with the big dawgs at the 2011 I Run for Pizza 5K. The Longleaf Elementary third-grader won the 8 and under age group by more than six minutes in 23:14, finishing 31st overall out of 467 female participants.

racing atmosphere before the Cheetah Chase, he took Alexa to the Tail of the Lizard 2-miler that runs out, over and back on the Eau Gallie causeway. “Alexa wanted to hold my hand during the race,” said Baker. “I figured we’d jog some and then walk over the bridge.” Instead, his youngest child dashed off an 8:40 first mile and then negative split an 8:16 on the second, all the while holding his hand and excitedly commenting on the boats in the water below. Her 16:56 finish was good enough for first in the 8 and under age group and sixth overall out of 102 females. “She raised a few eyebrows,” said Scott Baker. “A couple of parents said I had dragged her the whole time. I had to laugh. There wasn’t any pulling or prodding.” Alexa took the win at the Cheetah Chase a week later, setting a course record in the age group with her 15:57 finish. In 2011, at age 7, she again beat her own record on the same course in 14:13. “I love the Zoo and Jingle Bell runs,” said Scott Baker. “They are the largest kids’ races. Even if you go back through 20 years of local results, you won’t find anything bigger. It is exciting to me

because it shows that there is a growing movement for kids’ running.” While fully advocating youth fitness, Baker was concerned about what was and wasn’t an appropriate amount of running and racing for early elementary schoolage children. “I called my former Titusville high school cross country coach, Dr. Randy Weber, who is now the senior exercise physiologist for the Olympic team in Colorado Springs,” Baker said. “He thought that three races would be enough and then to stop and reintroduce the sport the following year. I also contacted (Coach) Doug Butler who gave just about the same advice.” After a summer of rising second grader shenanigans, including golf and soccer, Alexa ran the 2010 Pirates’ Plunder 2-miler, winning her age group by more than three minutes in 16:37. Baker and his wife, Brenda, who wanted to limit their daughter to race distances of two miles found opportunities with the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) cross-country program. “Dr. Weber thought it was good for her age because the distance was 1.25 miles (2,000 meters) and they ran on packed dirt or grass,” said Baker. The Bakers got their first eye-opening taste of big-time racing after Alexa qualified for the 2010 AAU National Cross Country Championships. “That was only her fourth of fifth race and she was overwhelmed,” said Scott Baker. “I had no idea about the kind of mileage and stuff kids were doing at that age. Alexa was running unattached and most of the other kids were on teams. She was intimidated, running alone and finished 37th out of 85 in her age group.” With her passion for running providing resilience Alexa continued to race as her parents allowed, tearing up her age group and gaining the poise, speed and experience to move up the chain at this year’s AAU Nationals. Scott Baker is now looking for a

And, in a mix of pride and embarrassment, he also admitted that Alexa beat him at the Jingle Bell 2-miler – the race that added the word ‘competitors’ to the father-daughter running relationship. “I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with her, and wasn’t sure if it was good for her to run without me in such a big crowd,” he said of the event that registered more than 1,500 participants. “She got ahead of me and I had continues on page 6

Alexa Baker, #879, pink top, pulls away from a pack for a seventh place finish out of 72 competitors in the 6-8 age group at the AAU 2000 meter National Championships on Dec. 4. She was the fastest Floridian in her age group.

to let her go. I caught up again with about half a mile to go and then pulled away. About 200 yards from the finish I could hear her coming. She sometimes makes the most joyful noises like ‘whoo n whoo’ when she races because she just loves it so much. Sure enough, she went right past me just before the finish line.” Alexa’s 13:39 finish (6:50 per mile) was one second ahead of her dad’s and good enough for the age group win by more than three minutes and the age group course record. During the Christmas break, the dark-eyed girl with the joyous smile shared some sage advice that we sometimes tend to forget as we age. “When you run, you have to have fun and when you go to the starting line, you need to be positive.”

Happy (Confident) New Year Need some self-confidence to help you reach your New Year’s resolutions? Below are some helpful excerpts from Dr. Karageoghis’s article Self-Confidence in sport-make your ego work for you! Dr. Karageorghis, of west London’s Brunel University, has published extensively in the field of sport and exercise psychology and has been a BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Science) accredited sport psychologist for 11 years.

What is self-confidence?

For many athletes, an explanation of the concept of self-confidence is hardly necessary, as they know intuitively what it is. Indeed, self-confidence is so palpable in some athletes you can almost reach out and touch it. Their confidence is reflected in everything they say and do, in what they wear and how they look.

Self-confidence is commonly defined as the sureness of feeling that you are equal to the task at hand. This sureness is characterized by absolute belief in ability. You may well know someone whose self-belief has this unshakeable quality, whose ego resists even the biggest setbacks. In such people, confidence is as resilient as a squash ball: the harder the blow, the quicker they bounce back. Nonetheless, although confidence is a desirable characteristic, arrogance – or a sureness of feeling not well founded in one’s ability – is undesirable. If self-confidence is perhaps the ‘guardian angel of sports performers’ then arrogance is their nemesis. Confidence is related to personality and those who exude self-confidence across a range of contexts, say at work, socially and in their sport, are said to

Athletes Giving Back The Running Zone Foundation would like to thank all of the athletes, volunteers and sponsors who supported the Ghostly Gecko 5K on Oct. 22. Because of your effort and generosity, we were able to donate $2,000 to the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is “to identify and select young adults who exhibit leadership potential, have a strong sense of moral values, and possess the compassion necessary to improve their world. With guidance from positive role models and trained professionals, these teens will develop leadership skills that promote responsible decisionmaking, increase self-esteem, resist negative peer pressure, and encourage conflict resolution. By reaching young leaders who return to their home communities with the ability to influence and inspire, we can develop a network of positive peer groups to impact teen issues and lifestyles.” Our collective donation will allow teens from local high schools to travel and participate in these vital programs. Participating Brevard high schools now include Cocoa, Eau Gallie, Holy Trinity, Melbourne and Rockledge.

Running Zone The Starting Line 16

Happy (Confident) New Year a set of circumstances – in which case it is known as state confidence or self-efficacy. When you perform any skill successfully, you will generate confidence and be willing to attempt something slightly more difficult.

The six sources of selfconfidence

The confidence an individual feels during a particular activity or situation is generally derived from one or more of the following six elements: n Performance accomplishments are the strongest contributor to sport confidence. When you perform any skill successfully, you will generate confidence and be willing to attempt something slightly more difficult. Skill learning should be organized into a series of tasks that progress gradually and allow you to master each step before progressing on to the next. Personal success breeds confidence, while repeated personal failure diminishes it. n Being involved with the success of others can also significantly bolster your confidence, especially if you believe that the performer you are involved with –such as a team-mate or training partner - closely matches your own qualities or abilities. In effect, it evokes the reaction: ‘if they can do it, I can do it’. n Verbal persuasion is a means of attempting to change the attitudes and behavior of those around us, and this includes changing their self-confidence. In sport, coaches often try to boost confidence by convincing athletes that the challenge ahead is within their capabilities: ‘I know you’re a great player so keep your head up and play hard!’ An athlete might reinforce this by repeating the message over and over to him or herself as a form of self-persuasion. A tip here is to avoid stating what you want in the negative; so, rather than ‘I really don’t want to come off second best’ try ‘I really want to win this one’. Accordingly, your mind will not need to consider what is not required in order to arrive at

what is. n Imagery experiences have to do with athletes recreating multi-sensory images of successful performance in their mind. Through creating such mental representations, mastery of a particular task or set of circumstances is far more likely. What you see is what you get! n Physiological states can reduce feelings of confidence through phenomena such as muscular tension, palpitations and butterflies in the stomach. The bodily sensations associated with competition need to be perceived as being facilitative to performance and this can be achieved through the application of appropriate stress management interventions such as the ‘five breath technique’ and ‘thought-stopping’. n Emotional state is the final source of self-confidence and relates to how you control the emotions associated with competition, such as excitement and anxiety. Very often, the importance of the occasion creates self-doubt, which is why it is essential to control your thoughts and emotions. Learning imagery and concentration skills such as those described in ‘the spotlight of excellence’ Exercise 2 below will help.

Four exercises that will boost your self-confidence

Exercise 1: Confident situations and situations of doubt To achieve a greater sense of stability in your confidence, it is necessary to know exactly what causes it to fluctuate. Divide a clean page into two columns. Label the first column ‘High-confidence situations’ and the second ‘Low-confidence situations’. In the first column, list all of the situations or circumstances in your sport in which you feel completely confident. In

the second column, list the situations or circumstances that sometimes cause your confidence to diminish. Clearly identifying the situations that make you feel uneasy is the first step towards building greater selfconfidence. We will come back to these lists in some of the remaining exercises, but for now, it should have just served to increase your awareness of areas that can be improved. Exercise 2: The spotlight of excellence This visualization exercise recreates the mental state associated with past performance success and will help you in bridging the gap between your ability and confidence: n Imagine a huge spotlight beaming down on the floor three feet in front of you. The light beam is about a three feet in diameter. n Now think back to a time in your sporting career when you were performing at the very peak of your ability – perhaps using he first column from Exercise 1 to guide you. Each movement you made brought about a successful outcome and everything just seemed to flow without much conscious effort. n In a dissociated state (i.e. looking at yourself from the outside) examine each of your five senses. See yourself inside the circle and excelling. Imagine exactly what the ‘you’ inside the circle is seeing, hearing, feeling, and smelling. Notice the ‘taste of success’ in your mouth. n Now step into the spotlight and become fully associated so that you are experiencing events through your own eyes and in real time. Again, notice what you are seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. n Notice exactly what this feels like so that you can reproduce it at will whenever your confidence is waning. Exercise 3: Positive self-talk Positive self-talk will affirm to you that you possess the skills, abilities, positive attitudes and beliefs that are the building blocks of success. The statements you choose need to be vivid, should roll off the continues on page 17

Happy (Confident) New Year tongue, and be practiced well in advance of competition. Most of all, they must be totally believable. You should use these particularly in the low-confidence situations that you identified in the second column of Exercise 1. Make your own list of four or five positive self-statements and read them to yourself every night before you go to bed and every morning as you wake up. Through repeated use, they will become embedded in your subconscious and have a profound influence on your sporting performance. Exercise 4: Using the power of sound Music has unique properties, among which is its ability to inspire, motivate and boost one’s confidence. There are

many tunes with inspirational lyrics or strong extra-musical associations that you can use to increase your confidence before competition. Good examples include I Believe I Can Fly by R Kelly (62 beats per minute), The Best by Tina Turner (104bpm) and Gold by Spandau Ballet (143bpm). You may like to try playing some tracks on your mp3 player as part of a pre-event routine. I suggest that if you want to feel confident and keep your physiological arousal low, select tracks with a slow tempo (i.e. below 110bpm). Conversely, if you want to psych-up, go for a higher tempo (i.e. over 110bpm), and build-up to a tempo of over 130bpm just before competing. Information from http://sportconfidence.blogspot.com
