Ahhhhh, here it is 10 days and counting to the Atlantic Coast Triathlon Half Ironman…….All the laps in the pool, waves choked down and miles and miles and miles and miles on the bike! Oh yeah, and some miles running too! I hope it all pays off! We swam 90 lengths (45 laps) in the pool today! Wow, I remember when I couldn’t even swim one whole length up and back without stopping. It has been 10 months of swimming to get there and I never thought I could swim that far! I have also ridden 60 miles on the bike and quite a few 50 milers! Ouch! I would have to say that it the toughest event of the three for me! I guess it takes years to get your body used to biking. My body is comfortable with running so that doesn’t hurt me like riding does. Our bodies seem to adapt to what we do most. I was talking to someone who loves to bike and he said that he can ride 50 miles and feel fine but if he runs 8 miles, his body hurts for two days. I said it is the opposite for me! I can run 8 miles no problem but if I ride 50 miles, I can’t even get off the couch! After all the training, I hope I am ready! I know when I am standing before the start looking at the buoys in the water, I will be thinking, “Oh my gosh, it looks so far,” but I have to remember that I already swam the distance! There is a rather large group of people from Brevard County participating in either the Olympic distance or the Half Ironman distance. It should be a lot of fun with many familiar faces all around!

So if you see us before next weekend, wish us luck! If you see us after next weekend, ask us how it went but let’s not discuss finishing times! Thank you for all of the support! If I can do this, YOU CAN TOO!

JACKIE CLIFTON: Always Climbing Higher By Patti Sponsler

If you were to chat up Palm Bay’s Jackie Clifton for a few minutes, you’d probably walk away feeling encouraged by her sweet smile, kind words and gentle energy. There is nothing in her outward nature that would suggest the petite motherof-three houses an inner strength of Herculean proportions. When Clifton sets a goal, there is very little that can get in her way - including the autoimmune diseases that occasionally try to wallop her. This year, the 49-year-old coach and personal trainer has focused on preparing her mind and body to race as a member of Team USA at the ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championships on November 5 in Nevada. Clifton qualified for the grueling event last October at the Halfmax Championships (1.2-mile swim; 56mile bike; 13.1-mile run) in Myrtle Beach. Her hard work has been paying off this season with Masters wins in road racing - including a sub-20 minute 5K and new female Masters course record at the Firecracker 5K. Clifton also bested 77 women in her age group at the wildly popular St. Anthony’s Triathlon in Tampa. Her time of two hours, twenty minutes and 43 seconds for the .93 mile swim; 24.8 mile bike at 10K gave her the age group win, a cool new watch and a free entry into one of the 5i50 Series events. We know that you’ll enjoy meeting Jackie and hope that you will be inspired by her adventurous attitude! RZ: Family members? RZ: Last October you qualified at the Halfmax (half Ironman) championships in Myrtle Beach to race on Team USA at an amazing race coming up in November! Want to tell us a bit about the event? JC: The ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championships are November 5, 2011 in Henderson, Nevada. This is a long course race consisting of a 2.75-mile swim, 80-mile bike ride and an 18-mile run. RZ: Did you like the USA team race kit? JC: The uniform is awesome and even has my last name on butt!! The parade shirts are cool also RZ: With the huge challenges this race presents (a 9,000+ foot elevation change on the bike course and another 2,000 foot elevation change on the run); how have you trained differently for this event versus the half-Ironman distances you raced including the relatively flat AmeliaMan in Amelia Island; the notoriously hot and hilly Rock ‘N RollMan in Macon, GA and continues on page 5

Multisport Madness October has traditionally been the month where the pace of triathlon reaches its full crescendo. After, all the Saturday closest to the month’s fullest moon is when the best longdistance triathletes from around the world gather to contest the Ironman Triathlon World Championships on the Big Island of Hawaii in Kona. This year, Melbourne’s Brad Cody will be one of the 1,800 lining up at for the start at ‘Dig Me’ Beach on Oct 8. Cody, 50, was Brevard’s only athlete to qualify this year for the Big Dance and did so at Ironman Louisville on August 28 as he crossed the finish line in ten hours, 20 minutes and 18 seconds. We’d like to wish Brad the best on his tropical trip to triathlon’s most famous finish line. Closer to the Prize (Purse) By Patti Sponslor

The sweaty miles we log on the roads during summer’s stench make running and walking in fall’s first cool breath seem almost magical by comparison. With morning temperatures dipping below 70 for the first time this season, the pace picks up along with the anticipation of setting some personal best race times during the next few months. With two of the seven 2010-11 Running Zone Foundation Race Series events behind us, we’ve already seen some records set. The Firecracker 5K launched the Series with a bang as Melbourne’s James Post, a junior who runs for the University of North Florida, smashed the course record by 12 seconds as he crossed the finish line in sixteen minutes and seven seconds. Both the men’s and women’s Masters (40+) course records were also

Jackie Clifton

stomped as Melbourne’s Doug Butler blew across the line, sixth overall, in 17:16 and Palm Bay’s Jackie Clifton beat her own former course record of 20:14 when she hit the line in 19:57. Both the Firecracker 5K and the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K broke attendance records with the latter registering more than 1,0000 walkers and runners. We want to thank all of the athletes, our generous sponsors and wonderful volunteers for supporting our events. Your commitment to fitness can breed a lifetime of good health and friendships. Participating in the Series also helps our community as race proceeds are donated to local charity and other non-profit organizations. The Honor America Liberty Bell Museum and Sentinels of Freedom received a total of $3,500 from the Fire-

cracker 5K. Waiting for numbers from Pizza And because of our generous sponsors, this year’s Series is also offering a record $10,000 prize purse to the top three male and females winners; top male and female Master (40+) and the top three male and female finishers in 16 age groups. With five races left to go, anything can happen. West Melbourne’s Michael Fischer currently leads the overall men’s race while the women’s race is tied between Satellite Beaches Jessica Crate and training partner, Angela Cobb, of Indialantic. On page 6 we list the current Series standings after two events. Complete Series information and current standings are available at http://www.runningzone.com/series/ continues on page 6

the qualifying Halfmax Championship in Myrtle Beach, SC? JC: If I remember correctly, that GA race was pretty hilly compared to Amelia Man. Oh my, YES!! Georgia kicked my butt!! I ended up dehydrated and in the medical tent but still finished the race and placed third in the age group. I was able to attend a weeklong USA Triathlon training camp on the ITU World’s course last spring. Having now experienced the racecourse, I am mentally ready, which is 90 percent of racing! The other 10 percent, has been training with a group of incredible athletes that have an Ironman race the same day as my race. Being an empty nester, I have had more time to train the last two months. I have also been training with my brother in Clermont, and on the beach with my husband. RZ: What motivates you to tackle these tougher courses such as Rock ‘N RollMan and the infamous Escape from

Alcatraz (San Francisco)? JC: I thrive off of pushing my body to the limit, doing new and exciting courses. Knowing that each day is precious and this is only a season in life, I want to give it my all. The harder the course, the stronger I become each time I race. RZ: How did you get into running and then triathlon?

JC: I felt tired and fatigued each night when my husband came home and he suggested I needed to exercise. I started running at the age of 35 to try to keep up with my kids. It was a difficult transition; it took me three months to run a mile! After running my first 5K, race three months later, I was hooked. I started competing in triathlons at the age of 40; it seemed to be more of a challenge that used all the muscle groups in the body as opposed to just the legs. RZ: Did you participate in sports with your kids as they were growing up? JC: I coached each one of my kids in cross-country. RZ: I remember seeing you coaching some younger kids in Coach Doug Butler’s camp one year and you also coach at Beachside TriSport and also continues on page 8

successful Health First Battle of the Bridges sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. It was exciting to see so many local faces cross the finish line including the three Brevard residents who took the overall podium spots. Melbourne’s Ed Donner, last year’s runner up, kept his cool after swimming off course to come back with the fastest individual bike split (1:06:00) and second fastest 10K (37:54) of the day to take the Olympic-distance victory in 2:09:14. In the sprint race, Melbourne’s Drad Daszynski turned in the fastest 5K of the day to take the win in 1:08:06. On the women’s side, Running Zone Race Team member and Palm Bay pharmacist, Kim Hunger, took her third course victory by more than three minutes as she hit the line in 1:17:38. provide individual coaching. How did you get into coaching and what about it attracted you and keeps you involved? JC: I started coaching cross-country for a private high school after running for about two years. I enjoyed watching the young athletes mature and gain strength and confidence during the season. I coached with Doug Butler for 12 years at his camp “Set Goals not Limits”. After I started doing triathlons, I also wanted to share my knowledge and excitement with others about this fun, rewarding sport. I received my USA Triathlon level 1 coaching license and have been coaching with Beachside TriSport for the past three years as their running coach. I am currently working on a race-specific training clinic now to help triathletes get the cutting edge on their races. RZ: I remember chatting with you one time about the challenges of your asthma and thyroid. How have they affected your training and racing and how do you overcome those challenges? JC: I do have several autoimmune diseases. I have to be very aware of

my body constantly while I am training. This makes me mentally stronger as well as tougher. The days my body does not want to cooperate, I have to slow down and rest. No pity parties here, each day is a privilege to work hard and complete my goals. RZ: I find it really cool that at age 49, you’re still winning most of the Masters awards. I think it provides hope that you can still maintain a high level of fitness as you age. What types of things, if any, do you pay more attention to now than you did say, in your 30s? JC: As I approach 50 in a few weeks, I realized that I have to stretch much more now than I ever did before. I try to do yoga two to three times a week. This has improved my whole performance; I am much stronger than I have ever been. RZ: I once saw you and someone else praying before the start of a race a few years ago and was really touched by that. How do you maintain a balance between being competitive and spiritual? JC: Being competitive and spiritual at the same time is the same thing! My racing verse has been “Love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind – Mark 12:30. I train with this in mind, to do everything with my whole heart, all my strength for the Lord, for it is He who has allowed me to be strong and direct my path. I take each day as a privilege to train hard and to be strong.

RZ: How do you keep the balance in your life between spirituality, family, coaching and your own fitness and racing? JC: Hopefully they are the same in one. Each discipline should go hand in hand. My Lord and Savior is the one who ordains each moment in our lives and I hope that I demonstrate this with all that I do. RZ: Thoughts on being part of the Running Zone Racing Team? JC: My favorite part about being an athlete is running for the Running Zone. Being with other athletes that encourage you and believe in you no matter what your performance is for that specific day is a great inspiration. Don and Denise are a great asset to our community and a joy to be a part of their team. The Running Zone helps promote running and fitness in our community and that is one of my main goals. RZ: Any advice for other athletes who might want to step up their fitness? JC: Slow and steady wins a race. Never increase more than 10 percent a week in your fitness to avoid injury or burn out. Do things in your daily exercise program that are harder than race day. For example, go run on the beach or change your exercise regime weekly. RZ: Any thoughts yet about goals for 2012? JC: No goals for my own fitness yet, just want to help coach others mentally and physically.

Water! Gatorade! Volunteers? by Patty Sponsler

Volunteering at the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon is so much fun that you don’t even feel like you’re working! If you or your family and friends are not participating in the race, we hope you’ll consider joining us as volunteers this year. The success of our event is dependent on the generous people who step up to donate a few hours of their time. As a small token of our appreciation we are offering each volunteer a Volunteer Appreciation Package that includes the following: n Space Coast volunteer tee-shirt n Discount coupons to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex n $10.00 coupon to Running Zone n Free registration to one race of the Space Coast Runners, Titusville or Running Zone Race Series. n Drawing for a free pair of shoes
