Registration for the series as well as individual events will open May 13th, the day after the last race of the 2011-2012 series event, Run for the Gecko “Hawaiian Luau” 5K! We are very excited to announce a new kids’ event. We are adding a kids’ marathon & half marathon called Kid’s Marathon (2.62

miles) and Half Marathon (1.31 miles) in March/April, 2013! This children’s only event will be for 12 years and under and will mirror an adults’ marathon and half marathon! We will also have 26.2 meters for the youngest kids who can’t yet make the 1.31 or 2.62 mile distance. It will be on a 1.31 loop so we can see the 2.62 mile group 2 times. All finishers will receive themed medals. Some older kids might want to try their luck at completing both races. They will receive an extra medal for completing both! We will offer a training program leading up to this event for all of the elementary schools in Brevard County. The race will culminate with a competition between all of the school teams. Parents will be allowed to run/walk with their children if waiver is signed before the start of the race (no fee). This could be a great first run/walk for your child if they are a little apprehensive. Full details of the 2012-2103 line-up will be in next month’s (May 2012) newsletter.

Mouth Watering Mondays

by Patti Sponsler

The much-maligned Monday is about to get a break. Instead of dreading the first day of the workweek, local runners and walkers will now look forward to the day that offers a free fun run/walk followed by delectable dinner fare offered at half-price. Starting on April 9, you can join your family and friends on the Pizza Galery & Grill’s beautiful outdoor courtyard at The Avenue in Viera. Gecko leader Rick Suarez will get athletes ready to walk or run at 6 p.m. Afterward, Pizza Gallery & Grill owner, Chris Conneen, is offering a 50% price reduction on their pageantry of pizzas, creative calzones, and bountiful buffet. Conneen and his culinary cohorts began offering half-price fare on Monday evenings when the local economy crash-landed. “Nineteen months ago, unemployment doubled from six to 12 percent,” said Conneen, who is well known for his and his company’s generous community outreach. “We have always done things on Monday nights to benefit some organization so we decided to offer half price on the pizza, calzones and buffet until local unemployment goes below 10 percent.” “It’s the pay-it-forward philosophy of our organization and how we live,” he continued. “We may not make any money on Monday but it helps our whole week. We have many people come up to me or the hostess telling us that their spouse has been laid off for a year or more and how much it means

to have the opportunity to go out and eat a good meal for so little.” This is not the first time Conneen and Running Zone have partnered. “We have been so lucky to know Chris,” said Denise Piercy, coowner of Running Zone, the specialty running store that shared the same plaza with Pizza Gallery until Conneen moved the operacontinues on page 6

Finding the Fun in Fitness by Patti Sponsler

The second annual Corporate 5K kicked off with a kaleidoscope of color on March 15.

The evening streets became a kaleidoscope of color on March 15 as many of the 600 athletes who participated in the second annual Running Zone Foundation Corporate 5K sported corporate t-shirts. Employees from three-dozen local companies ran or walked the 3.1-mile route that began and ended at Lighting Science Group in Satellite Beach.

“Lighting Science did a great job hosting the event,” said the event’s director, Denise Piercy. “It was a great night with a party atmosphere and a lot of fun.” Piercy and her husband, Don, drummed up the inaugural event last year to help local companies encourage employee fitness. As a former corporate CFO, Don Piercy understands how both

morale and the bottom line can be boosted as employees become healthier. The Piercys also know that adding a large dose of fun to an event can make gaining fitness even more attractive to those who may be hesitant to get off the couch. The Piercy prescription for this event includes a festive St. Patrick’s Day-themed post-race party that last year earned the moniker ‘Brevard’s biggest outdoor office party.” This year, the event’s participation grew by 25 percent. DRS Technologies was one of the companies new to this year’s frolic. The New Jersey-based defense technology company fielded a team of 55 employees from their two Brevard-based locations. The combined times of their four fastest employees earned the company top honors in their category. “It was cool seeing everyone in one continues on page 6

place,” said Brad Daszynski, the DRS software engineer who clocked the company’s fastest time of 18:23 to finish seventh overall. “At work you sort of do your own thing. At the race you get a chance to get to meet and know each other on a social level.” And this was just the start for the DRS athletes. “This is the first one we’ve ever done as a group,” said Daszynski, who

is also one of Brevard’s fastest triathletes. “Our HR (human resources) people were really happy with the turnout. We’ll be able to do one now every quarter as a team.” Complete results for the 2012 Corporate 5K results as well as free, downloadable race and team photos are online at http://www.runningzone.com/ event_results

Mouth-watering Mondays tion to Viera. “The original Thursday night fun runs were going to only go for eight weeks to provide training for the Run for the Gecko 5K.” “With Chris providing pizzas on his patio afterward for all the runners, everyone had such fun that we just kept it going. We were so sorry when he moved to Viera and we really appreciate everything he still does for our races. He provides all the food for I Run for Pizza 5K and the Gecko 5K. He also provides all the pizzas for the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon.” And Conneen, whose heart is as big

as his pies, is looking forward to once again sharing his patio with the athletes. “We missed doing it,” he said. “We absolutely adore Running Zone and the Piercys. We share many of the same core values.” “The word ‘restaurant’ came from the French verb meaning ‘to restore’. I’m trying to be a good steward with the blessings I’ve been given. Sharing a good meal provides enrichment for both body and soul.” For additional information, contact Running Zone at 321-751-8890. Let YOUR Voice be Heard Please support this effort to define the demographics of multisport athletes (those who swim, bike and/or run) in Brevard County by participating in the on-line survey at http://www. zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22F7FPD2QUL The survey was set up to provide anonymity for those who participated. Only the aggregate results will be available when the survey closes on April 15. Please note that the Zoomerang survey platform does not support input from cell devices but does work well with desktops, laptops and tablets. We appreciate you taking the time to let your voice be heard.

We know athletes love to keep up on

how their friends are doing in racing. We publish local results on our website – as well as tons of photos from the Series events and others- at http://www.runningzone.com/ event_results We like to acknowledge and congratulate our athletes when they race out of town, and we began publishing this column to try to spotlight who did what during the past month. Unfortunately, we don’t know about every race where locals may be attending. Other times the official results don’t include the athletes’ hometowns so we are unable to search for our local friends, and, in the case of many relays, the results only give team names without listing the individual participants. Finally, some races have search engines that allow us to sort by town. If a race director abbreviates or misspells a hometown, we will miss it on the search. We feel bad when we miss anyone for the above reasons. If you’d like to make sure your out-of-town race results are included, let us know where and when you’re race was. We’ll do our best to find everyone who races beyond Brevard’s borders!
