Hello! We are very excited to announce something wonderful from Running Zone Foundation. We have partnered with Downtown Yoga to bring you a FREE weekly yoga class for the summer. As we get older it seems our muscles get tighter and stiffer. This eventually leads to injuries while we are running and walking. We believe that this can help a lot of us stay injury free. Once a week Downtown Yoga will be at Running Zone for about an hour class starting at 10:30am Sunday morning. We hope this will give you a taste of how much this may help. Please read below to meet Annette, bring your mat and see you Sunday at 10:30am! Here is my story and how I cross-trained yoga to help me with running. Do you know how many times your foot strikes the ground on an average mile run? Over 1,000 times. It’s was not surprising when I began to complain about a bad back and knees, tight hips and hamstrings, shin splits and sore feet. I discovered most pain I was experiencing was not from running in and of itself, but from imbalances within that running caused and exacerbated. We know yoga and running lie on opposite ends of the exercise spectrum, the two need not be mutually exclusive. In fact, running and yoga make a good marriage of strength and flexibility. What does this mean for the runner with plantar fasciitis? Or a lower back pain? First, don’t ignore your body’s signals. Take a break when your body

We invest too much time and energy into running and there’s no need to be sidelined by injuries and discomfort brought on by a running program. Studies show chronic injuries can eventually self-correct through a gentle yet consistent yoga practice. Remember, your body is on your side. It has an inherent intelligence to bring about a state of equilibrium no matter how many times your feet hit the pavement. Now, grab your mat and head to Running Zone for your complimentary Downtown Yoga and Runner’s class offered June-July, 2012., Annette Armstrong, Downtown Yoga Owner/Instructor.

5K event closes 2011-2012 Running Zone Foundation Race Series by Patti Sponsler

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012 7:00 am, Liberty Bell Museum Melbourne More than 700 runners and walkers turned out for the Run for the Gecko 5K Hawaiian Luau on May 12.

Maybe Peter Clusener should ride his bike more often. On May 12, the 35-year-old retired wild firefighter smoked the Run for the Gecko 5K Hawaiian Luau course in 16 minutes and 19 seconds, the third fastest time in the event’s nine-year history. “It was weird,” he said about his Gecko victory. “I really screwed up my ankle before the Pirate Plunder so I’d been biking a lot and not really running at all. I had no idea what to expect.” Cluesner and West Melbourne’s Michael Fisher hit the first mile in 5:08. By the end of the second mile, Clusener had gained five seconds and then increased the gap to 16 seconds at the finish, leaving Fisher trailing for second place in 16:35. “Fisher has been beating me all season so he must have had an off day,” said Clusener. “I’m stoked for him. He’s really been kicking butt and it’s cool to watch his improvement. It’s fun to race with him and the other younger guys.” Clusener, the defending Gecko 5K champ, dropped 25 seconds off of his last year’s winning time of 16:44. “I think I’m in better shape this year,” said Clusener who had finally

finished rebuilding house and is look for roommates. “Before I hurt my ankle, I had been running more consistently.” The race was the last event in the seven-race 2011-12 Running Zone Foundation Race Series that offered $10,000 in gift certificates and prizes to the season’s speediest. Although Clusener, who was last year’s Series champ, won the Gecko 5K, Fisher had amassed enough points coming into the race to win this year’s Series, relegated Clusener to second overall in the Series. West Melbourne’s John Davis, the 2010 Series winner, placed third overall in the Gecko in 16:43 and third overall in the 2012 Series. Although Viera’s Shane Streufert took the Gecko Master’s (40+) title in 17:21, Melbourne’s Doug Butler had more than enough points to take the Series Master’s win. Butler, a 49-year-old 2012 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee nailed top-ten finishes in each of the Series events and the Gecko was no exception. Feeding the Animals The Running Zone Foundation wants to thank the amazing athletes, tireless volunteers and generous sponsors for supporting the Brevard Zoo Raptor Run 3K on March 3. Your efforts allowed us to donate $7,500 to the Brevard Zoo this year. Since the inaugural race in 2007, the Foundation – thanks to all of you – has donated a total of $34,000 to the Brevard Zoo. Our running/walking community is The Best!

Hopefully, the $7,500 Running Zone Foundation donation to the Brevard Zoo will keep this hungry raptor well fed. Michelle Smurl, Director of Animal and Conservation Programs for the Brevard Zoo, grins as she accepts the check from Denise Piercy while other Zoo employees stand guard.

New at Running Zone: COMPRESSPORT® Remember how dorky the first runners wearing calf guards looked? Sure, there were lots of jokes about funky tan lines and Grandpa’s socks. But athletes stopped laughing when they realized the tangible benefits of compression while training, racing and simply goofing off and recovering. Unfortunately, swimmers were left out until COMPRESSPORT® began to offer sleeves you can swim in. Australia’s Melissa Rollison won the 2011 Ironman 70.3 World Championship on September 9 in four hours, twenty minutes and 55 seconds. She wore her COMPRESSPORT® calf guards from start to finish. Running Zone now offers the COMPRESSPORT® US® (Ultra Silicone) Calf Guards and Socks that bring more to the table including: ULTRALIGHT - Wet or dry COMPRESSPORT® remains lightweight and comfortable. EASY CARE - No need to wash in the machine. You can hand wash them in the shower and put them straight back on. COMPRESSPORT® products retain their shape over time and are tear proof under normal conditions. SILICON ABSORBER - With 220 Soft Silicone spikes that fully surround the ankle over a height of 7cm, Ultra Silicone optimizes shock absorption and guarantees ideal support to the Achilles tendon throughout strenuous effort. DETOX - Studies prove significant reduction in Lactic Acid Build up during prolonged effort while wearing COMPRESSPORT®. ANTI-FATIGUE - Shock and vibration absorption helps guard against injury and fatigue. RECOVERY - Significant benefits can be gained from the increased venous feedback by wearing your COMPRESSPORT® in recovery.

A Running & Walking Club “Not Just for Lizards”

GECKO FAST TRACK The Running Zone Foundation and Coach Doug Butler are offering something fun and different for the entire family this summer! “Most adults came to running later in life so they’ve never had a chance to do many of these events,” said Butler, who has coached both the Holy Trinity cross-country and track and field teams to multiple state victories. “It’s a chance to do something fresh.” For just $5 per week, participants will be offered several challenges including track events ranging from 100 meters to two miles; and field events that could include anything from the long jump to shot put. Below is the schedule for the Gecko Club Summer Track Series. Come join us!

Congratulations to Melbourne’s Kaitlin Shiver! The full-time doctoral student and professional triathlete was selected to compete in the May 11 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Trials in San Diego for a spot on the 2012 London team this fall. “My goal for the race was to use it as a learning experience,” said Shiver who placed fifth out of the 10 Americans racing in an international field of the world’s best including current and former Olympic team members. “We (Shiver and coach, Jennifer Hutchinson) took a lot away from the race that will help me train better.” We have no doubt that the hard-working and humble athlete will use those lessons well on her way to a 2016 Olympic berth!

Running Zone sponsored athlete, Kaitlin Shiver, front in orange cap, exits the swim during the U.S. 2012 Olympic Triathlon Trials in San Diego on May 11.
