Denise’s Rant It has been several years since I have run a full marathon. I thought my days of running full marathons were over. I really enjoy the half marathon distance.

Our daughter is now 21 and has completed two half marathons. I always said to my husband that the only way I would run another full marathon is if one of our children asked me to run one with them. Well, that day came sooner than I thought it would. This past fall our daughter uttered those words! She chose a goal race and we began to train. My training partner, our daughter and I started running those long runs together. As we were running, we kept trying to convey to our less seasoned daughter the importance of pacing. “This is a marathon, keep your pace steady and slower as we have to get through 26.2 miles”. I joked that we had to keep pulling on her pony tail to slow her down. Finally on one long run, we had 6 miles to go out of 18 and I said, “just go”. She seemed to fly on ahead effortlessly. As she ran further and further out of our sight we could see she was not slowing down at all. Wow, we were all so impressed at how well she was running! She started doing her long runs on her own! My partner and I couldn’t keep up anymore. The plans changed a bit on our strategy. Now I seemed
to be running a marathon again, but not with our daughter! She ran 2 x 20 milers wonderfully and had an awesome pace. Then, at the end of the 2nd 20 miler, her calf muscle pulled! She took a week off and tried to run 2 miles. It went well, “Whew, we thought”! But then she ran a longer run and made it 7 miles before it pulled again! Ugh, injuries can be so frustrating! She took another week off and still couldn’t get the pain out of her calf. She has missed 3 weeks of training but finally started running pain free again. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn’t pull again. We know she will be able to complete the marathon as long as the calf holds up, but with the missed training, she probably won’t be able to finish the marathon in the time she was expecting. We have not only passed the sport on to our daughter but have also taught her a little about how to work through the injuries of our sport. The good thing that came out of the injury?.... Our daughter will be running with me and my training partner now because the injury slowed her down a little. Running teaches us more about ourselves than just exercise. We have to remember to always look for the positives! Wish us luck!

After running shoulder to shoulder throughout the entire race, current Series points leader, Michael Fisher, out-kicked last year’s Series champ, Peter Clusener, at the finish for the win by less than one second.
Competition was fierce at the front of the record field at the Brevard Zoo’s Raptor Run 3K on March 3. Athletes were vying for personal best times, unique raptor race awards and the points that could lead to a piece of the $10,000 prize purse up for grabs in the 2011-12 Running Zone Race Series. The Raptor Run was race number five in the seven-race Series. Zipping through the first mile, last year’s Series champ, Peter Clusener, and this year’s current points leader, Michael Fisher, had a sizeable 20-second gap on the chase pack with Fisher just off of Clusener’s shoulder. “I know that when he (Clusener) is there it will be a fast race because he is a really good runner,” said
Fisher, who at only 19-years-old and in his first winning season of racing, exudes a calm and graciousness beyond his years. “I stuck with him and when we started getting toward the end I noticed he was slowing a bit. I had a little extra energy and gave a bit of a kick. I guess it was enough.” Fisher took the victory in 9:36.8, a scant 8/10th of a second ahead of the 34-year-old Clusener, who finished in 9:37.6. Indialantic’s Dillon McGee out-kicked Melbourne’s John Davis by 3/10th of one second to place third in 10:09.4. Viera’s Shane Streufert took sixth overall and the Masters’ (40+) victory in 10:13. Miss Manners Misaligned in Rockledge by Patti Sponsler
How would you like it if your neighbors: n Urinated on your bushes? n Left garbage on your lawn? n Woke you up early in the morning with raucous laughter and chatter? n Spread three or four across the road while you were trying to get to work? Those were the complaints lodged against the running community by a handful of Rockledge Drive residents at a town-hall-type meeting held at the Rockledge Police Department on February 8. Concerned for the safety and wellbeing of the residents, motorists, cyclists and runners who try to share the twisting, narrow road that offers spectacular Indian River scenery, Police Chief Ron Krueger invited all concerned parties to come faceto-face to resolve their differences. To be fair, there were several residents who said how much they enjoyed seeing athletes using the road in their neighborhood but were concerned about safety. While the majority of the time was spent discussing the issues regarding mo-
This is the type of view that draws scores of runners and cyclists to train on Rockledge Drive.
torists and cyclists, some of the frustration was pointed at runners due to the behaviors listed in the opening paragraph of this article. Their anger seems justified and could be eliminated if the running community would simply behave respectfully while enjoying the beauty of the scenic road. Here are a few tips that we should heed not only on Rockledge Drive but also in all of the residential areas the fleet-of-feet frequent. n If you’re on the road, run or walk against traffic. n If you’re running in a group, run no more than two abreast. If cars are approaching or traffic is heavy, run single file. n Be alert on blind curves. n Wear reflective gear and/or carry lights when running in the dark. n Private property is private. As one resident pointed out, many don’t realize
that residents on the west side of Rockledge Drive also own the east (river) side as well. n Private property is not a garbage can. Take your trash with you. n Private property is not a port-o-let. n Get permission from the owner before you set up a water stop and then remove it and any trash as soon as you’re finished with your run. n Keep voices and laughter down when people are usually sleeping. Voices can be carried farther than we think. n Before you pass slower walkers and runners, let them know you’re coming. n Acknowledge others –especially the residents- who are using the road. A cheery ‘good morning’ can go a long way in generating good will between all. Brevard County runners can’t fix all the issues but we should do what we can to help us all co-exist harmoniously.

Running with the Raptors Beaches Jessica Crate took her third Zoo title as she crossed the line in 10:47 and tenth overall. Palm Bay’s Jessica Wiedenbauer took second overall with a personal best 3K time of 11:43. Fifteen-year-old Emily Chapman from West Melbourne was five seconds behind to take third in 11:48 and Palm Bay’s Jackie Clifton took the female Masters’ title in 11:51. With only two races left – the Pirate Plunder 2-Mile Mud Run on April 7 and the Run for the Gecko Hawaiian Luau on May 12 - Fisher is leading the men’s race by more than 100 points over Clusener and Davis. As only the points from the fastest six races are totaled for each athlete, Fisher may have the luxury of foregoing the last race to join his family on vacation. In the races prior to the Raptor Run, Crate and Indialantic’s Angela Cobb were trading victories with Crate

trailing Cobb by 20 points. Crate’s recent win gives her 80 points on Cobb but if the two women go head-to-head in both of the last races, either woman could still win after each of their lowest points are dropped. Wiedenbauer’s second place has vaulted her to third

JOLLY ROGER TO FLY IN PALM BAY
(The Talk like a Pirate vocabulary in the sidebar may be needed to translate some of this article.) By Patti Sponsler Ahoy me hearty! Join us as we hoist the Jolly Roger on April 7 for the Pirate Plunder 2-Mile Adventure Run on the Palm Bay campus of Brevard Community College. Previously a part of the Health First Triathlon weekend, the popular race returns as Running Zone Foundation’s first obstacle course event. Both sprogs and seasoned swash-bucklers will enjoy the sweet trade as they go on the account that includes Walking the Plank, sailing through the Sword Gauntlet and avoiding the tangles of the Scallywag Crawl. But don’t fret the challenges too much as even the lilly-livered will have a chance at the loot that goes three deep overall and in each age group and also includes a random givea-way of a note-pad computer. As this is also race number five of the seven-race 2011-12 Running Zone Foundation Race Series, finish points will count toward the Series Booty worth $10,000.
Bring the little jacks as well as Planet Kid will provide free childcare during the race. Afterward, the wee lassies and mateys are invited to enjoy the free Li’L Pirate plunder Kids’ Run. Your entry includes swashbuckling technical (moisturewicking) race shirts; the pirate costume contest, fun race packets, great pirate awards to the heartiest and plenty of grog, grub and yo ho ho! And proving that even pirates can be generous, race proceeds will benefit United True Order of Sisters (www.uots.org/Brevard. htm), the cancer service organization that provides free mammograms and supports Camp Hope in Merritt Island for bereaved children. A treasure chest for Camp Hope will also be available for contributions of spare plunder. Complete information and registration is available now at http://www.runningzone.

Talk Like a Pirate From www.yarr.org.uk/talk
With the Pirate Plunder 2-Mile Adventure Run fast approaching on April 7 and International Talk Like A Pirate Day on Sept. 29, we thought we could all use a little com/series/news/1612 brush-up on our pirate lingo.
Startin’ Rules: n Double up on all your adjectives and
you’ll be bountifully bombastic with your phrasing. Pirates never speak of “a big ship”, they call it a “great, grand ship!” They never say never, they say “No nay ne’er!” n Drop all your “g”’s when you speak and you’ll get words like “rowin’”, “sailin’” and “fightin’”. Dropping all of your “v”’s will get you words like “ne’er”, “e’er” and “o’er”. n Instead of saying “I am”, sailors say, “I be”. Instead of saying “You are”, sailors say, “You be”. Instead of saying, “They are”, sailors say, “They be”. Ne’er speak in anythin’ but the present tense!
Hints an’ Tips:
If it be helpin’, start yer sentence wi’ a “Arr, me hearty,” in a deep, throaty voice — ye’ll find that the rest be comin’ much easier.
Vocabulary:
In which ye’ll find words submitted by many pirates o’er the years, an’ which comprise a loose piratical dictionary. n Ahoy: Hey! n Avast: Stop! n Aye: Yes n Black spot: to be ‘placin’ the black spot’ be markin’ someone for death. n Booty: treasure n Buccaneer: a pirate who be answerin’ to no man or blasted government. n By the Powers!: an exclamation, uttered by Long John Silver in Treasure Island! n Cat o’ nine tails: whip for floggin’ mutineers n Corsair: a pirate who be makin’ his berth in the Med-...Medi-...that sea ‘tween Spain and Africa, aye! n Davy Jones’ Locker: the bottom o’ the sea, where the souls of dead men lie n Doubloons: pieces of gold... n Fiddlers Green: the private heaven where pirates be goin’ when they die. n Furner: a ship which be yer own, not one ye steal an’ plunder. n Gentlemen o’ fortune: a slightly more positive term fer pirates! n Go on the account: to embark on a piratical cruise n Grog: A pirate’s favorite drink. n Jack: a flag or a sailor n Jolly Roger: the skull and crossbones, the pirate flag! continues on page 10

Cupid and Cupcakes by Patti Sponsler
What better place for passions to collide than at the Valentine’s Day Couples’ Fun Run at Running Zone on February 16? After the three-mile jaunt, lovers who love running and walking were treated to the decedent deliciousness of Sweet JessiCakes cupcakes, donated by Melbourne’s Cupcake Queen, Jessica Bouwsma. “Cupcakes are my passion,” said the former high school runner who has degrees in both early childhood education and music. “I’ve always made them for birthdays, holidays and other special events.” “I love coming up with unique ideas that other people wouldn’t think of or try to make on their own. The best part is delivering them and seeing people enjoy them.” Over the years friends and family members encouraged Jessica to take it a step further and go into business. She didn’t pursue the thought seriously until she was entrusted to make an assortment
of her tantalizing treats for the large wedding of a close girlfriend. “It was my biggest opportunity both in quantity and exposure,” she said. “I thought it was a sign and started putting it all together.” Jessica launched Sweet JessiCakes in December and has been living her passion ever since. Those who attended the Valen-

Running Zone wants to thank Jessica for the delicious donation and wishes Sweet JessiCakes every success. Want to connect with Jessica? Lighting up Fitness by Patti Sponsler
It seemed a natural fit for Running Zone Foundation to partner with Lighting Science Group for the March 15 Corporate 5K. The world’s leading manufacturer of energy efficient LED lighting is 100% committed to employee fitness. Both attitude and example flow from the top. “We are all active runners, cyclists and swimmers,” Cocoa’s Mike Acosta was the overall said company co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, fastest CEO at last year’s Corporate 5K. Fred Maxik. “We think that it helps us foster a healthy culture. Fit employees are positive and healthier.” And a good number of their employees have already committed to the event that last year earned the moniker Brevard’s Biggest Outdoor Office Party. We only have a couple of hundred employees at this location (Satellite Beach) and as of last week (late Feb.) we already had 55 registered for the event,” said Rosy Ojha, International Customer Advocate and Customer Service Project Leader. “Many of those who are not walking or running will be volunteering. We will have a nice-sized group participating.” After the walk/run, participants will enjoy a St. Patty’s Day celebration including a live band, food available by Long Doggers and complimentary green beer. Beautiful awards will be given to the fastest and all finishers will receive a great T-shirt. The race will kick off at 6 p.m. at 1227 South Patrick Drive in Satellite Beach and parking will be available at the David R. Schechter Center at 1809 South Patrick Drive, 2/10 of a mile north of Lighting Science. Registration and complete information is available at http://www.runningzone.com/series/ news/1614

Running Straight by Patti Sponsler
Prior to Valentine’s Day, Running Zone offered patrons a chance to win a free pair of shoes with the ‘Why I love to Run’ contest. Participants were encouraged to write their thoughts on one of the many colorful paper hearts provided. After tough deliberation, Running Zone employees picked their top six choices and posted them on the Running Zone Facebook page to allow the community to vote for the winner. The quote “I love running because it’s a daily part of my sobriety (3 years sober)!” won by more than a five-to-one margin. Perhaps it was because runners know all too well just how much effort is required to overcome the

MILES WITH PURPOSE by Patti Sponsler
When Port St. John’s Christy Tayge decided to run 40 miles on her 40th birthday, the mother-of-five decided that she wanted her efforts to be meaningful to herself and beneficial to others. Her compassion for the homeless led her to research local charities and how her potential contribution would help. After committing to her plan, the physical therapist who also co-founded the Port St. John Runners with Kathy Camick, asked her friends and family, if they were able, to donate in increments of four such as $4, $14, $40... Below Christy shares how she combined her love of running with her heart for the homeless and raised more than $2,000 for Brevard County’s Housing the Homeless (formerly the Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless). RZ: How did this all get started? CT: When I was training for the Half Ironman (Augusta 70.3 in Sept.) I decided I was going to run 40 miles on my 40th birthday - just a crazy thought at the time. CT: I’ve always had compassion and empathy for homeless people. I did a paper back in ‘90 when I was a student at Brevard Community College about home-

the home that she shared with her boyfriend, David Lee. “He had waited up for me to tell me everything I knew about my life but I thought no one else knew,” she said. “He told me how he had picked me up off the floor many times and how I had embarrassed his family by finishing one bottle of wine and then going for another.” “He loved me enough to risk losing me because he knew he’d lose me anyway,” she said of the man who became her husband in 2010. “He gave me the ultimatum.”
Jackie took her last drink on June 21, 2008 and began to apply the steps she had tried to ignore in her court-ordered programs. “I worked hard to make amends and earn trust again,” she said. Under the knowledgeable and caring wing of long-time runner and hair-styling colleague, George Mcafee, Jackie also began to incorporate running into her daily routine. “I threw myself into it,” she said. “I ran when I wanted to drink; I ran when I had problems.” And when the devastating news of her
sister’s death arrived 18 months ago, Jackie reached for her shoes instead of a bottle. “Running kept me sober,” she said. “I ran a lot the first year after her death.” While the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other has given Jackie her life back, her fellow athletes have helped make that life rich. “The people at Running Zone and the people I’ve met running have given me my joy back,” she said. “Running is very friendshiporiented.”

cause but it is one that is deserving of local support. The helping organizations are extremely limited in what they can do with funds coming from grants because they often come with a ton of strings attached. The unattached funds raised by the ‘40 on 40’ can go toward many things including gas cards so people can make it to work; and toiletries when someone finally does get a place to live but doesn’t have money to provide the basic necessities such as toilet paper, forks, spoons, etc. Finally, one of the things I tell my children regularly and believe with all my being is this: we belong to each other and have a responsibility to help those in need. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering and may, indeed, be something like a kind word, a smile, some pocket change or being a friend to an otherwise “outcast”. It is unacceptable to walk away and pretend not to see. So this explains why I chose Housing the Homeless. I did call them, tell them my thoughts and asked if they would be willing to be interviewed by me so I could be sure it was the right choice. They didn’t hesitate and they weren’t insulted by my request. RZ: What was the longest distance you had run prior to deciding on doing 40 miles and how did you train to achieve the distance? CT: My longest distance prior to 40 on 40 was 30 miles - twice. I trained by keeping up my miles after the Space Coast Marathon in November. I tried to run at least one 20-miler a week. Hernan Garcia also told me if I could do 30 miles, the rest was purely mental and cautioned me against over-training. I heeded that warning - I haven’t always been so studious which was always to my detriment. I knew if a man who runs 50 to 100 miles at a time makes a recommendation, I’d be wise to listen. This time I did and it paid off. RZ: What were the ups and downs of your birthday trek? CT: I’m seriously trying to think of a “down” and can’t possibly think of one. The worst thing that happened was my big toe on my right foot hurt - felt like a

hammer had been dropped on it until today (less than a week after the run). The ups were more than I can count but I’ll give you my favorites: n Seeing the outpouring of community support. I have always been happy to be a part of this community but the response to support a cause that is less than sexy still overwhelms me! n The day was absolutely beautiful! n Running through my Port St. John neighborhood was fun. We ran past every school. Something I realized after we finished was that the kids who were aware of the run saw an example of health and charity. n The charity itself couldn’t have been more supportive and went above and beyond what I’ve ever seen a recipient charity do. They closed down their offices for the day to come out and support everyone who participated. They were along the route all day with signs and flags (many of our homeless are veterans); they participated by walking and running along the course; they made a human chain to get us safely across US1 and they came to our post-race celebration. n Hernan (Garcia) and Kathy (Camick) did the entire route with me even after I told them them that it wasn’t my expectation they do that and all of the other amazing people who came out to run, ride, cheer with me even though it wasn’t convenient. n My amazing husband who is always my
biggest supporter picked up people to join us, dropped them back off at their cars, and drove the “support vehicle” providing our nutrition and hydration! n Knowing that, at 40-years-old, I can still grow and be better than I have been. I have a long way to go to be the person I want to be and I’m praying I have many more years to get to be that person. n Having my children at the post-run celebration - all of them! I want them to learn that part of belonging to humanity includes being a part of making life better for those who struggle or may not be able to do it on their own. I know this sounds grandiose but we are “called” to make a difference. I could never have written a check for what was raised, but I was able to run the 40 miles and that seemed to be enough to motivate people to donate. n Finally, the event reinforced what I believe to be true - people are good. Not just because they write checks - some people didn’t, some people can’t - but people did what they could whether it was send me an encouraging note, cheer, or tell others about it. RZ: How are you feeling now (Feb. 29-one week post-40)? CT: I feel great and really was surprised that I wasn’t as sore as I’ve been after other long runs that were relatively “easy”.I discovered I really like those really long distances more than running fast - it’s the lazy runner in me - and the love of sightseeing along the way.
