All of the towns around Vättern have a great location. But Motala is privileged to have a lot more water than most. Here we have the Gota Canal, the Motala Ström river system, Lake Boren and 170 other lakes. This is something residents get to appreciate all year round.

In addition to summer swimming, fishing, SUP, sailing and kayaking, we do open water swimming, winter swimming, long-distance ice skating and ice fishing, among other things. Those of us who live around Vättern also have a joint event, Vätternrundan. Vätternrundan starts and ends in Motala, and during a single week in June there’s a big cycle festival with different races with the 315 km Vätternrundan as the finale.

Motala is called the capital of the Gota Canal because this was one of the two locations where the canal building began (the other was Forsvik) and this is where the head office is. AB Göta Kanalbolag’s head office is a beautiful yellow building in Motala harbour, a harbour that’s a meeting place with restaurants, boats, a motor museum and plenty going on. From the harbour you can follow the Göta Canal through Motala on a beautiful walk or bike ride to Borenshult's locks, a trip of about 3.5 km.

Along the way you pass Old Motala workshop area where you can eat delicious waffles and take a look inside the Motala Industrial Museum. The area demonstrates Motala's history, with Motala Verkstad and the town that grew up around it. Download the Story Spot app and listen to different stories from the area. The road also goes past the mighty Lokverkstan, which is now used as an event venue, giving us fantastic concerts and other events.

At Borenshult's locks there’s something to fascinate both large and small. This is the steepest lock staircase on the Göta Canal. The five locks steps tie together the Göta Canal with Lake Boren, and have a level difference of just over 15 m.

Stay one more night. Why not try out a short – or longer –hike? Choose from fantastic nature, perhaps in the woods of Tjalmo, or an urban hike and get to know Motala a little better. You can find all the tips you need at naturkartan. se And if you've never been to Varamobaden, it's a must, a gem with kilometres of sandy beach and shallow water. If you prefer to swim in a more secluded location, there are many options, and if you're into winter swimming, Råssnäsbadet is a good place.
