The site locates in the haydarpasa station area which is abandoned nowadays. Used to be one of the most important traffic center, this area witnessed the gradual decline of old railway system due to technology development. The history of the railway system in Istanbul can represent the development of the city to some extent and that also defines my collection: anything related to the railway. The station area, especially the platforms and the tracks can provide both content meaning (history) and good scenery potentials to my palazzo.

02 GARDEN VIBE Redevelopment of the Plantage area, Amsterdam, Netherlands Complex Project Studio, TUDelft Mar, 2015 - Jun, 2015 Collaborator: Huiyi Qian Tutors: Prof. Antonio Cruz, Muriel Huisman, Ger Warries

In the past, the Plantage area was used as "an idyllic spot, where people could walk around and enjoy nature". “Promenades” characterized the public space of the plantage in the early areas. Gardening and walking were in fashion. However with the rapid urban development, the current Plantage has gradually lost its past identity, a green promenade area for the public. The past prosperous Middenlaan and waterbanks are now occupied by motor traffic and parking. The rigid borders of Artis suppress the potential of water banks and the square becomes deserted. In view of this, we try to help this area regain its past prosperity by bringing back the past “garden vibe” to the Plantage. Through this, we want to create an area where the public can not only enjoy the result but also take part in the process of gardening and farming. Also, we reorganize the urban street network in order to release the Middenlaan to pedestrians. A new scenery axis and a new form of identity are established by the integration of the existing situation and this intervention.

03 REBORN OF YANZIJI Renewal of traditional district, Nanjing, China Urban design, Southeast University Mar, 2014 - Jun, 2014 Individual Work Tutors: Peng Tang, Yang Shen

YangZiji locates close to the Yangzi River in the north part of Nanjing, where used to be a very busy with a lot of boats connecting to the opposite side of the river. However it became a deserted district due to the decline of riverside industrial and water-transportation. The government plans to redevelop this area and make this plot a center among the entire riverbank city landscape stripe. The design starts with the survey of the current urban fabric and tries to give out a general urban plan of the entire area and then choose a key part as the representative role to show the detailed design.

-28-

-29-

Old YanZiji

Based on the understanding of preservation of the traditional elements and the introduction of modern issues, in the general master plan, the north part of the main road, close to the river side is reserved for traditional chinese old towns combined with residence and tourism purposes. While the south part, close to the mountain, is used as the modern part, including a museum of the old Ming wall and a Activity center for citizens. Due to the width of the road, the link between the two side is limited. In order to solve the problem, the plot connecting the two sides is choose as the focused area to reduce the effect of isolating, meanwhile working as the creative cultural industrial district attracting the outcomers.

04 URBAN CUBES Youth Olympic Village, Nanjing, China Residence Design Studio, Southeast University Feb, 2013 - Apr, 2013 Collaborator: Chongliang Tao Tutor: Meiyin Zhang

Targeted at world-wide athletes in 2014 Youth Olympic games right here in Nanjing, our group aim at creating an energetic and comfortable village. The site locates in Jianye district, Nanjing. The Nanjing Olympic Centre lies on the southwest side of the site, which is about only 5 minutes ride to go. The functions around the site are almost residence except the east side which is a district commercial center. Our strategy is to scatter living volumes in our site. In this way, these scattered volumes together form varies courtyards throughout which provide residents with fresh air, green filed, sunshine as well as activities space. These qualities are essential for residents in our sense. So it can also be put into practical use after the Olympic Game. We focus on create different feeling of public space throughout the design process.

FOCUS GROUP AREA DESIGN

GROUP ANALYSIS

We set up three-level privacys, represented by three materials, wood-public, brick-common, grass-private. The brick walls help define the boundary of different groups, the wood corridors in first floor connect the lower two floors of different buildings, of which the ground floor is for outer public and the first floor is for inner public. As for the basic modules, we choose 15mX15m, 21mX21m, 30m X30m types, all depanding on the fundamental 3mX3m module in architecture design.

We put the traffic system in the middle and link the surrounding blocks in order to create a different feeling of going home. -47-

1. Insitu Settlement

2. Step by Step strategy

The initial idea is to provide insitu settlement for them to reduce the interruption on their common life. However, if we only use the current housing solution, those people still need to be moved to someplace else for years and then move back which still does not solve the problem because it inevitably effect their life and the direct change from informal houses to new condominium also make them unfamiliar. Accordingly here come with my SECOND ARGUMENT, the ‘STEP BY STEP’ strategy. The changing from slums to new housing figures will be conduct one by one, plot by plot. By this incremental concept, the influence on the original residents will be controlled to the minimum and it also create possibility for adaptation process rather than the direct transforming.

The whole city layout

Eco-friendly city is mainly about sustainability. Sustainability, now as a new green topic, has been promoted by more and more countries. I started with a basic concept to make different function circles to distribute different functions. During the approaching to the two sustainable topics: ‘Zero energy for heating and cooling' and 'No private cars for residence', I kept modifying my campus design as the results of topics. We focused on the process of trying to achieve our topics in our design will consistant BIM thinking, rather than a normal urban design. Differ from traditional studios, we each choose a different piece of site block and we will finally put all the pieces into a whole city. The relationship of different pieces and the traffic circulation will be considered as a group issue.

Vertical links activate the atrium

Recent decades has seen a more and more popular concern on refurbishment design. In most designs, people will rebuild. Considering the cost and time, to change is much better than to rebuild. This design focuses on the building of the department of architecture in order to meet the new requests of students and teachers. The steps I take tries to rebuild the least to achieve the goal.
