01 THE PARALELL TWINS reconnecting a city of duality
Advance Studio | Fall 2016 Location: Barranquilla, Colombia Advisor: Giancarlo Mazzanti worked with Ayesha Ghosh
The city of Barranquilla and the island of 1972 were separated from birth. The rise of railways in Colombia made the river of Magdalena obsolete. Though people have longing to connect with the nature for decades, the development of the city center made this connection weaker and weaker. By connecting the two banks of the land with cultural activities, this project rebuilds the long lost relationship between city and nature, and help Magdalena river to regain its significance in history.
Golden Port of Colombia The city of Barranquilla carries significant meaning historically and geographically, act as one of the busiest and most vibrant city in South America.
Burst of Energy The city hosts one of the biggest Carnaval annually in Feburary. The preparationgoes on monthly before this festival, and affects everyone inth the city.
Site Incision In spite of people’s longing for connection with the nature, their activities are cut apart by the river.
Slicer to binder The project aims to activate the bank area, and turn Magdalena river from a slicer into a binder, bring cultural programs utilizing the atmosphere and environment, and adhere the nature and the city back together.

A Centralized Platform A platform on the isla side serves as a focal point for all cultural activities. It draws the attention of everyone on the walkway, and provide a gathering space for large events such as the Carnival of Barranquilla.
An Extension of the City The two cultural centers, though apart from each other, can be read as one because of the connection created by the cable car. The island therefore can now be included into people’s life, and become a indispensable part of the city.
An Extension of the Culture Floating programs become the seed of cultures of Barranquilla and can be dissipated to further parts of the city. Area lack of cultural activities are connected to the center utilizing the resource of Magdalena river.
02 Transparency of Business Bank in the Digital Age
Core Studio | Spring 2015 Location: Long Island City, New York Advisor: Mimi Hoang
This physical compression of the banking functions of banks as well as the increasingly virtual nature of banking transactions, has in the past decade opened the door to a deluge of reinvention of the type, programmatically, spatially and experientially, with the ‘bank as’ phenomenon leading to banks as community center, banks as retail stores, social lounges or even restaurant, amongst other. The bank has continuously and dynamically evolved as a building type. Shifts in society’s perception of banks, the technologies that enable monetary transactions and the nature of the transactions themselves have been reflected in the bank’s image. As evidenced in its beginnings as a simple counter within a store, to the imposing Modernist glass boxes, bank architecture physically represents the bank’s desired engagement with and service to their community. Recent trends in technology, online transactions and social media continue to shape the banking industry and change the way in which we can access financial resources.

Gradient of Privacy Traditional bank models have clear boundries between front of house and back of house due to security of assets. Bank in a digital age should diminish these boundries, and create smooth transitions between these spaces. The gradient of privacy would help guide people through a series of activities and connect the experience from all dimensions.
Contour of Space Walls are used as separation tools in the traditional model of banks. In the newist model it brings connections. Walls in a digital bank help to shape the space in between. Its contour edges and glass floors bring the spatial experience into unity.

04 TRANSFORMING THEATER SPACE
Tech Series | Fall 2015 Location: Brooklyn, New York Advisor: Craig Schwitter worked with Eugene Chang, Nico Cui, Zoe Wang
As a neighborhood transform from old to new, a theater can help to shape the culture and meet the expanding need of community. In a formerly industrial area, the theater can provide its neighborhood with what they have requested, a conventional theater space, as well as what they haven’t asked for, as a gift and surprise, an open public area in the exact same space.
Facade Preservation This project started with the idea of keeping the historic faรงade to keep a coherent looking with the neighborhood and bring contrast to the experience inside and outside.
Ship in Water While theatre space inside has a completely controlled environment, the Lobby and atrium is naturally ventilated and lighted. The theatre in the center functions as a unique object, almost like a ship landed on the riverside. The staircase at the entrance invite the public to the rooftop restaurant to enjoy the view of the riverside from above.

Structure for Transformation The envelopes are supported by steel truss and sub-structures. A large swing door panel is manually controlled by an operating wheel. Minimal effort of operation can be achieved by balancing the central mass of the door.
05 THE RIPPLE EFFECT a resonance of motion and environment
Figment Art Festival | Spring 2016 Location: Governor Island, New York Advisor: Mark Bearak
The idea of “Ripple” comes from the understanding of connection between human motion and natural environment. The invisible relationship could be seen and magnified architecturally in physical space. The impact of one’s movement can be transfered from one element to its neighbour through systematical connection. By connecting the panels that respond to weight, poles that respond to hand and roof respond to wind, the system allow peoples movement and the effect of wind to be transfered through the entire system, creating a unique responsive spatial experience and turn the invisible visible.

05 CRAFT IN THE DIGITAL AGE Spring 2015 Advisor: Nathan Carter The skills of the architect are now dedicated to the digital. The making and testing of a project can take place entirely in the computer, but without an intimate understanding of materials and techniques of making, the architect’s digital work has limited efficacy.
Interlocking Dimensions The inspiration of this coffee table comes from a 3 piece traditional wooden burr-puzzle. Acurate digital calculation of notches allow angular transformation of the geometry into its new form.
Stool for the Impatient A rocking stool created by connecting a loop sticks with maximum joinery strenght and support a person’s motion on top.
“Friend or Foe Bench A convertable bench that redefines the relationship of its users, allows two people to sit side by side, or back to back with one another. It can also be turned into a seesaw or a single stool. In any senario, all pieces can be locked together just by gravity.
