CATALYTIC
Designers. We pour our hearts and souls into our works, spending hours perfecting details most wouldn’t even notice. We use visual language to translate concepts and solve complex problems. On the road to learning design, I always think about how graphic design can change the world. I found that design is a powerful conduit for change and designers are the catalyst for social progress. As the messages and experiences we create pass through the hands, minds, and hearts of people, we have the opportunity to turn abstract concepts into good designs that communicate, resonate, and influence people. Graphic design is not just how it looks and feels, but how it works. Designers are catalysts, we make things happen.

PROJECT
|008| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
Create a well-researched book about the future evolution of imagination, and briefly predict and explain the subject. The purpose of the project is to practice the design skills of typesetting and image combination and the ability to collect information.
APPROACH
This book, about imagination in the future, not only collects examples of the great human imagination in history, but also shows how human brains, robots and AI will lead the future world. It also explores the coexistence of human and AI creativity in the age of imagination. I use contrasting colors and creative images to convey the message, using unconventional combinations and interweaving of graphics and texts to express the evolutionary path of imagination in the future.

THE SECRET TO A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
PROJECT
|028| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
Create a brand by defining a social issue, distilling information, and creating a solution through a graphic design approach. The design solution will successfully reach its intended audience on multiple levels and across multiple design platforms.
APPROACH
Through systematic and in depth investigations of the outside world, I have found that people who are fast paced often feel exhausted by lack of sleep. Most people don’t realize what causes it. In the United States, 18 million people suffer from sleep apnea, and most people don’t know what it is. So I created the brand Sleep Solutions for the universal social problem of sleep apnea. By launching a comprehensive event and providing mobile applications and online diagnostics and device selection, Sleep Solutions wants audiences to know about it, recognize it, and treat it. The ultimate goal of the project is to relieve more people with sleep apnea through the power of the brand.

THE UNIVERSE IS COMPRISED OF CIRCLES
PROJECT
|060| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
To choose a company’s annual report and redesign it. Show the ability to follow the design language of the brand and establish a cohesive visual communication in typography, tables and charts. The goal is to deconstruct the design language and reconstruct it into an integrated, newly envisioned annual report.
APPROACH
The company group I chose is the WPP Group, the world’s largest advertising communications group, focusing on creative transformation. Its business scope includes advertising, public relations, lobbying, brand image and communication. Circles is a conceptual annual report designed for the WPP Group. The circular elements are the design direction of this report, and the annual results of each year are like the growth of the annual rings. By breaking the basic framework of the traditional annual report, the images, texts, charts, and big data in the book are all designed around the circle. By presenting a series of interesting visual combinations, it illustrates the unique temperament of the company and expresses the attitude and spirit of the group’s unity.

PROJECT
|080| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
Create promotional material for a type foundry that has released a new typeface. Our task is to develop an engaging type promotion which includes a type specimen. This project should appeal to graphic designers and a type savvy audience. We have more freedom to develop content and formats than with other projects. This project should be fun and engaging; it should make the typeface sing, show its proper usage and explain its appeal.
APPROACH
I chose DIN Next Slab Pro as the typeface to create this project. In terms of creativity, I used Din’s meaning in English to expand the design. The audience can watch and explore this typeface promotional material by holding a red filter. In the choice of format, I chose to break the form of regular brochures and folders, and used the newspaper format to show the typeface to the audience. This typeface newspaper gave a detailed presentation of the DIN Next Slab Pro typeface family, which comprehensively expresses the fun and diversity of the German road marking system.

PROJECT
|094| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
The assignment at hand during this semester was to create a mobile application and website for a business in the area of interest, and apply all UI/UX design solutions and user exper-ience principles and methodologies. The main focus is on the concept and aesthetics of this project in delivering a great user experience.
APPROACH
I decided to choose Creativity Explored, an art gallery in San Francisco, for UI/UX advancement of its website and app and bring a higher level of visual sophistication to them. I decided on this topic because I think we should be committed to supporting people with developmental disabilities who seek to become professional artists and to promote their work as an emerging and increasingly important contribution to the contemporary art world. The goal is to enhance the influence of the organization and expand the public art community awareness of their galleries and studios and improve user experience and shape gallery image.

A DESIGNER’S MONOLOGUE DIARY
PROJECT
|112| RUONAN HU THE SELECTED WORKS C ATA LY T I C
OBJECTIVE
Select a word of interest from the list of phenomena and design a book as an extension of it.
APPROACH
The word for the phenomenon I chose was Day, the theme upon which the designer’s diary was developed. I hoped to express the spiritual and physical journey of the 24-hour designer to the audience through a monologue from a designer’s perspective and mindset. In this book, I used a simple black and white color palette, concise layout and recording time points to express a designer’s day.
