The tradition of cutting birthday cakes- the truth behind it

When It Is Started
It all started in the 15th century. The bakeries of Germany during that period came up with the idea that during special occasions, like anniversaries, birthdays or weddings, cakes will be cut. Initially the cakes that were introduced, was a single layer cake for the special occasions.
When It Is Modified
Gradually, the modification of the cakes started. During the 17th century, the birthday cakes were made much more elaborate. Decorations like icing, layers and flowers were put in the cakes. But such decorated cakes were only affordable for the wealthy class. And for the middle or lower class people, the single layered cakes were affordable.
