For Jane Geddes, Charlevue Stud, Dingo, 2015 was one of mixed emotions. Like many Jane battled horrific seasonal conditions in a bid to present bulls for sale. She was rewarded with the highest selling bull for the breed in 2015. Our thanks to Jane for this image of the $26,000 Charlevue 24-03 (P) and we congratulate the Bulmer family, Weona Stud, Casino, on his purchase.

Peter Dingle, President, Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd
President’s Report I extend a very warm welcome to all Brangus enthusiasts to the 2016 Autumn edition of The Australian Brangus. Whilst on that subject, I welcome the new editors of our great magazine, Kent Ward and Paula Driscoll. I hope they receive the support from members, as this all helps to make a good product. I look forward to reading the good stories of what people are doing, and have done, to make the Brangus Breed stand out from the rest here in Australia, as this magazine goes all around the world. We welcome two new board members, Mr Mark Beckman in Zone 2 and Mr Barry Morgan in Zone 3. Mark brings some great attributes, his knowledge in running a large scale business, great people skills and a passion for the Brangus breed will be a great asset. Barry is one of the longest serving board members with a great amount of experience. I feel that with the mix of board members, new and existing, this makes for a good balance. This year the International Brangus Breeders Association and the South African Brangus Society is holding the 8th World Brangus Congress in South Africa, 20th May 2016. For those wishing to broaden their knowledge of this great breed a trip to South Africa would be highly recommended. The board are embarking on ways to lift the profile of our breed. This year we are hosting the Toogoolawah Brangus Feature Show. Toogoolawah is traditionally a very strong regional cattle show in south-east Queensland. Any enquiries should be directed to Ms Tammy Robinson (glenheart1@bigpond.com). There are a number of other projects we are currently involved in, including a feed lot trial. We envisage that helpful data will be gained from this trial to use in better promoting the Brangus breed. Recently, we signed a new agreement with ABRI in Armidale. This is a 2 year, rolling agreement. With the growth of membership, so equates an increase in bull numbers. As an Association we are looking to provide more options to sell our great product – Brangus. With this in mind, we are endeavouring to re-establish a Southern sale in New South Wales. Member support, fresh ideas and any form of assistance from zones 3 and 4 would be greatly appreciated. Please contact your zone representatives with regards to this matter. As I write this report, we are receiving much needed rain over most of Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. I certainly hope that the drought affected areas are also receiving good rain as well. The year 2016 is looking full of promise. Cattle markets are at near record levels, this factor hopefully will lead to improved seedstock values. Kind Regards Peter Dingle

“In looks Centre Time takes after his sire, Charlevue Centrefield. I’ve always loved his fleshing, length, depth and that great strong head. His confirmation, balance and sire appeal coupled with his doing ability and coat type allows me to think that he’ll easily handle all conditions.”

John Thomas, Executive Officer, Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd
The Executive Paper Welcome Brangus breeders and enthusiasts to the 2016 Autumn Edition of the Australian Brangus Magazine. As I am the new kid on the block I feel I should at least introduce myself at the start of this report. My name is John Thomas and I have been employed here at ABRI for coming up ten years in February. I was fortunate enough to be appointed to take over the position to replace Natalie Herd whilst she is on maternity leave until the end of February. As I write this report it has been very encouraging to hear that many of our Queensland members have finally received some very good rainfalls, however not everyone was fortunate enough to have been so blessed and are still struggling with drought. Hopefully for them by the time this magazine is distributed they will also have had some good news. Although I did not attend the National Sale at Roma this year I believe from the reports submitted at the Board meeting in Rockhampton that it was very successful and continues to grow each year. I was however lucky enough to have attended the Rockhampton Sale and Annual General Meeting and was very impressed with the quality of animals presented for sale. Considering the extremely tough conditions witnessed in the North for the past couple of years the members who presented their animals for sale should be congratulated for the condition of those animals. It was also a great pleasure to meet many Brangus members at that event and also to meet the Board members for the first time. I would like to congratulate Peter Dingle on his election as President of the Association for the next twelve months and also Luke Keogh for being election as Vice-President. My impression of the Board at the face-to-face meeting in Rockhampton was that they are very proactive and extremely keen to grow the Society. The ABCA will also once again have a presence at field days throughout Queensland and New South Wales in the coming year, the Board are also very keen to encourage a National Sale event in the South to again recommence and looking at the feasibility of one in a central location. The ABCA sponsored sales will no doubt roll around quickly again this year with the Roma sale being held on Friday 2nd September 2016 and the Rockhampton sale being held on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th of October 2016 this year. If you have a Brangus sale or event you would like to list on the events calendar of the Brangus website, email the event details to brangus@abri.une.edu.au or call the office on (02) 6773 3126 to discuss listing your event. A Brangus Bulletin Newsletter will be published after each board meeting highlighting the major discussion points and any information that is relevant to members.

Understanding Genomics Genomics is a term used to describe the analysis of the function and structure of a genome, being the complete set of DNA within a single cell or organism. Within the beef industry, genomics is still an ever expanding technology, with a range of potential applications available within a beef enterprise, plus many more under development. Some of the most common current applications of genomic technology include: •Parentage Verification •Management of Genetic Conditions •Change in Qualitative Traits (e.g. coat colour/polledness) •Genetic Improvement in Production Traits •Assessment of Breed Composition What is DNA? Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is an exceptionally important molecule found in the nucleus of all bovine cells. It is often described as the ‘blueprint’ of an organism because it codes the instructions for how that organism will develop, function and appear.
are made up of alternating sugar and phosphate molecules. The rungs connect to the sugar molecules and are known as nitrogenous bases. It is the bases which provide the key functionality of DNA and exhibit variation between individuals. There are approximately 3 billion base pairs in bovine DNA. There are four different bases, Adenine (A), Thyamine (T), Gaunine (G) and Cytosine (C). Each rung of DNA is made up of two bases linked together, either G to C or T to A. The sequences of these base pairs make up the ‘message’ of DNA, and differences in sequences provide the basis for variation between individuals. What is a Gene? A gene is a base pair sequence at a particular location on the chromosome which codes for a specific product. It is estimated there are between 22,000 and 28,000 genes in the beef animals. Genes are separated on chromosomes by areas of ‘non-coding DNA’ for which no function has been identified, but still makeup part of the animal’s genotype.
Key Terms • Trait – Attribute or characteristic of animals that can be measured and improved genetically (for example, growth rate, fertility, carcass or meat quality) • Genotype – the full genetic makeup of an animal including dominant and recessive alleles that may not be expressed • Phenotype – the observable characteristics or traits of an animal that result from the interaction between the animal’s genotype and the environment • Locus – the specific location of a gene or DNA sequence on a chromosome In plants and animals, DNA is bundled • Allele – one form of a gene or a genetic into chromosomes. Beef cattle have 30 chromosome pairs, each pair including one locus • Homozygous – animal carries identical chromosome inherited from the sire and alleles for a gene one from the dam. Because the progeny • Heterozygous – animal carries different inherit chromosomes from both parents, the DNA ‘blueprint’ is passed on from one alleles for a gene • Dominant – an allele is dominant over generation to the next. another so that the phenotype of the DNA Structure dominant allele is always expressed over DNA looks like a long twisted ladder, the recessive allele or double helix. The sides of the ladder 14
Autumn – 2016
• Recessive – an allele is recessive, so that the phenotype is only expressed when two copies of the allele are present (i.e. it is homozygous). • Carrier – animal which is heterozygous and ‘carries’ a recessive allele which is not being expressed phenotypically For each gene there may be 2 or more variations, known as alleles, which can result in different phenotypes or observable characteristics. For example one of the genes influencing coat colour has three alleles, the “e” allele for red coat colour, the ED allele for black coat colour and a “Wild type” E+ allele. Which alleles the animal has, and how those alleles interact with each other determines the coat colour of the animal. What is a Gene Marker (or DNA Marker)? A gene or DNA marker is a known, heritable base pair sequence which is associated with a particular gene. The DNA marker sequence does not necessarily have to be part of the gene that codes for the trait but only associated with it, therefore the value of the genetic marker will vary. There are several types of DNA markers, but those most commonly being used in the beef industry are microsatellites, SNPs (pronounced “snips”) and Indels. What is a SNP? Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are markers where there is a difference in a single base pair. For example, in the figure below, the top animal has a “C & G” base pair at the particular location in the DNA, whereas the bottom animal has a “T & A” base pair.

What is a Microsatellite? A microsatellite is a repeat of a particular base pair sequence at a specific location in an animal’s DNA, for example CACACACA. The number of base pair repeats differs between animals. Microsatellites form the basis for traditional DNA parent verification, which use multiple microsatellites to determine a calves’ parentage through the exclusion of possible candidates which do not have the same microsatellites. While early DNA technology only evaluated an animal’s DNA for a relatively small number of SNPs, SNP chips now routinely evaluate animals at many thousands of individual SNPs. For example, DNA chips with 7,000 (i.e. 7K), 50,000 (ie. 50K) or 800,000 (ie. 800K) SNPs on them are now available.
What is an Indel? An Indel is an insertion or deletion of a particular base pair sequence at a specific location in an animal’s DNA. Indels are often associated with recessive genetic conditions. What is a Genomic Prediction Equation? As each production trait is influenced by many genes, inferring genetic merit for a particular trait requires the accumulated effects of many markers. Genomic Prediction Equations take the genotype of an animal as collected using dense SNP chips (e.g. 50,000 SNPs), to estimate the animal’s breeding value based on the known effect of each SNP on the trait of interest. For further information regarding the application of Genomic Technology, please contact staff at TBTS.

2015 Burnham Youth Awardees
Grady Hansen Grady Hansen is a fifteen year old student from Kalapa outside Rockhampton. Currently undertaking secondary studies at the Rockhampton Grammar School, Grady’s foremost passion is Brangus. “I’m immensely proud of our breed, my greatest desire is to improve on what we have at our fingertips, it’s a tremendous opportunity to continue improving our cattle and our breed,” said Grady. Grady has been involved with cattle all his life. His parents Nev and Megan Hansen operate Oaklands Brangus Stud, Kalapa some 30 minutes west of Rockhampton. Like many born into the seedstock world his early youth has been spent attending rural and regional shows, grooming, parading and competition with cattle. Along side of this he’s had the opportunity of competing in junior paraders, junior judging with the view that one day he will be asked to adjudicate in the ring. However, before all of this there are still a couple of years of schooling left and the quietly spoken and very polite youngster has more aspirations, adding, “I’d like to complete a Degree in the Bachelor of Agriculture at Central Queensland University (CQU), it’ll be very beneficial in allowing me to one day take over the management of our family property.”
Lachlan Trustum Lachlan Trustum is a 18 year old and has been associated with Brangus all his life. His grandparents are well known throughout the breed, Warren and Robyn Bulmer, Weona Stud, Leeville NSW. Lachlan has been associated with showing cattle since he could hold lead ropes. Weona is a 400 head stud female herd and he’s enjoyed working with his mother and grandparents for many years, mustering and working cattle. Lachlan’s greatest passion is showing, breaking in and travelling the show circuit with show cattle whether it be regional and or at a Royal level throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Last year, Lachlan had the honour of being selected and competing at the RAS in the Youth Paraders Competition. Another highlight for the awardee was attending Beef 2015 with nine head and the exhibiting the Grand Champion Bull at the RNA, Weona Cruz. Lachlan added “ I believe Brangus cattle excel in show and sale rings, it’s vitally important to keep youth involved in the development of the breed for it’s future and that of the cattle Industry.”
Brangus in top 10 in RASV Challenge Michael Bush, Castle Brangus, Euroa, Victoria recently participated in the Stock & Land Beef Week and at the same time entered the RASV Heifer Challenge. This event is conducted in conjunction with the Beef Week event, with the competition recognises excellence in herd replacement females in seed stock operation throughout Victoria and into New South Wales. 24
Autumn – 2016
Michael reports that his team of Brangus made it through to the final 10 from a field totalling 48 entries. Castle Brangus were the Bos indicus entry out of 220 herds representing by 24 individual breeds that participated in Stock and Land Beef Week this year and where the only Bos indicus finalist in the five years that the heifer challenge has been running.
Judge for the 2016 heifer challenge was Bob Dent from Glen Innes. Bob Dent is an experienced cattle judge, who has previously presided over competitions in USA, NZ and Brazil as well as all mainland states of Australia. The task of judging the award took almost two weeks from properties across Victoria and New South Wales from January 27 - February 4.

920/M1. Is this the most influential cow in Australian Brangus? With over 81 registered calves, 116 grandcalves, 137 great-grandcalves in over 25 stud herds and numerous record holders, Ms Centre Ranch 920/M1 (pictured above) could well claim to be the most influential cow in modern Australian Brangus. The legacy of a cow resides with the success of her progeny. Calved at Centre Ranch, Centerville Texas (US) in early 2002, she is still in production for her owners, Telpara Hills Stud. With the dispersal of the Centre Ranch herd, 920/M1 was purchased as a heifer by well-known USA ET technician Trent Wilson, Normangee, Texas as a show heifer for his daughters. After winning her class at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, 920/M1 was offered for sale to Stephen and Brittany Pearce during a trip to Texas. “When we arrived at Trent’s ET facility a group of 920 ET heifers caught our eye,” Brittany explains. “We then saw 920/M1 and were really impressed with her natural calf. We knew this cow could outbreed herself and we were right.” She was purchased with a classy Tracker of Brinks heifer, 920S5 on foot. This female (920S5) entered the Telpara Hills US donor programme in 2006. 32
Autumn – 2016
Extremely fertile, with high pregnancy rates, Telpara Hills has imported 147 ‘A’ Grade embryos from the 920M1.
Developing into a super donor, 920D2 is now famous as the first Brangus cow to be cloned in Australia.
920/M1 has been paired with over 14 individual sires and stamps phenotype, performance, carcass, and udder quality onto all of her calves. Her prowess as a valued breeder is reflected also in statistical data. Her progeny have been at the top of Telpara Hills and Australia performance recording EBVs year after year. Ten of the top 15 Brangus animals for 200 Day weight are her offspring. From the outset her progeny were in demand. At Beef 2009 at the Telpara Hills Sale a seven-month-old Csonka daughter set a new Australian breed record of $16,000 selling to Boombah Brangus, Dingo. Immediately after this another top Csonka daughter (920D2) set an Australian private sale record to the Oaklands Stud, Kalapa for $20,000.
Her sons attract huge demand. Nine have sold to set a staggering average of $23,388 including the $50,000 (half share), Telpara Hills Real McCoy 920J19. Real McCoy the first black Australian Brangus bull to have semen sold into the US. However her real worth is possibly the females that have been released by Telpara Hills that have had an even greater impact on the breed in Australia. These include the 2015 record breaker at the annual Rockhampton Sale, the $28,000 Telpara Hills Miss Final Cut 920J22 (Somerville Stud, Gracemere) and the $20,000 (half share) 920J26 (CPR Brangus, Bogie). Seven daughters and granddaughters have averaged $20,214. Article Continues pg 34

Achievements 10 of the top 15 highest ranked animals in Australia for 200 Day weight are her calves. The huge influence this matriarch has on the breed can be gauged by the fact that progeny sales at Telpara Hills stand at over $300,000. This figure does not include pregnancies, embryos or the 22 retained daughters within the Telpara herd. The impression left by 920M1 was such that the Pearce family located her maternal sister, 920N and subsequently purchased a flush yielding 12 progeny including $32,000 Ali, Liston ($30,000) and the record breaking female, the $32,000, 920J10. Despite her statue and importance, 920/M1 has never been pampered; she runs the same routine as the other Telpara Hills donors based in the US. She annually enters the ET programme at Normangee ET Centre where she is flushed and then spelled in arid West
Texas. Here resting donors are mated naturally to a bull in on the boundary of the Chihuahuan desert with limestone rock, cactus, and mesquite bush similar to western Queensland. “Telpara Hills has introduced to Australia many outstanding donor females, but there’s little doubt that Ms Centre Ranch 920/M1 holds the mantle as the most influential female ever in the Brangus breed in Australia to date,” said Trevor Pearce. “This fairy-tale story would never have happened if we had not recognised her potential on that US tour about a decade ago and had such great success as an ET donor,” explains Stephen Pearce. “It’s allowed the release of her elite genetics and we believe has greatly benefited the Brangus breed as a whole.”

Feeding for Lifetime Performance Supporting the structural integrity of the young bull during development not only delivers immediate health benefits, but directs lifetime production. The ultimate aim of every good bull producer should be to support their young animals growing to genetic potential using a well-managed plane of nutrition rather than relying on a high impact, high starch diet in a race to the auction ring. The problem in a nutshell for competitive breeders is that preparation for the bull sale period has long been seen as a bull fattening competition and observed with concern by potential buyers. However there is a good argument and solid science to support animal development for lifetime performance in this period of critical growth. While mature bulls are remarkably resistant to nutritional stress, maintaining fertility, condition and vigour in very poor conditions. Young bulls can suffer ‘whole of life’ consequences if fed too much, too little or given feed of poor quality. Underfeeding can retard growth rates, delay puberty and affect fertility. Overfeeding can result in decreased testicular size, reducing sperm reserves and seminal quality. Both can affect eventual digestive tract integrity and capacity. Balanced minerals and vitamins are also crucial in this phase as are freedom from rancidity and mycotoxins in feeds.
The point being, the genetic material your clients are purchasing requires a fully functioning beast to present to cows in the paddock.

Brangus – My Choice of Beef
Matthew George, Stockyard Hill, Victoria was tragically killed in a car accident in 2007, at 21 years of age. His absolute love of animals, thirst for knowledge, passion for breeding was coupled with his dream to travel overseas to study developments in beef cattle breeding and to bring this knowledge back to Australia to enhance herds by sharing this knowledge with fellow breeders. The Matthew George Young Stockman Award (MGYSA) was established in 2008 as a sub-fund of The Ballarat Foundation to allow young breeders, aged 18 to 25 years, the opportunity to live out Matthew’s dream. The annual award recipient is announced annually at the Royal Melbourne Show. Jackie Elliott was the recipient of 2014 award and as the winner she was presented with a custom made belt buckle. Here’s her story of her travels and time spent in America. 38
Autumn – 2016
I’m a southern Brangus breeder, my family operate the Corumbene Brangus and Ultra Black cattle Stud alongside first cross ewes at Byaduk, Victoria. I’ve just returned home from a trip of a life time in North America after winning the MGYSA award in 2014. My journey took me across 12 states in America in 12 weeks, visiting several Brangus producers across Texas.
My host family were the Farris family, Tuscola, Texas. Danny and Mary Beth Farris have been breeding Brangus for thirty years. Their son, Payton custom made a leather belt as a gift for me to put my MGYSA buckle on.
Definitely one of the highlights of my trip was attending the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course and the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Young Leadership Conference. Of particular A large proportion of my time on the trip interest and what excited me most was spent focusing on learning about was learning how Americans evaluate livestock production and gaining a valuable a carcase and in the process gaining contacts across the Brangus Breed. valuable tips and insights on how to I attended the Texas Junior Brangus be a better leader in the beef industry. Following the Beef Cattle Short Course, Geordie and I visited Mike Weathers, a Genetrust partner located in Columbus, Texas. While we were there we took the opportunity to keep a look out for potential genetics to 1. Jackie with her custom made leather belt use in Australia. From there I had the opportunity of driving solo to Yellowstone National Park, tackling the Bear Tooth Pass. My trip finished up with a stay with the Robinson family in Oregon, where I celebrated my 23rd birthday on a ranch, riding horses, touring Hells Canyon and watching new friends compete in calf roping. After this wonderful experience travelling around the United States and getting the chance of see all types of beef breeds, there’s definitely one thing that stands out. Nothing beats coming home to see your own Brangus herd. After three months away and thousands kilometres of travel, I am convinced of one thing, no matter where you are in the world, Brangus are the true beef performers. 39

The result of this is new science that delivers more effective, safer, more economical and reliable feed options. We commenced using Rural Supplements Multi Lik and Maxi Lik in January 2014 when the season didn’t break. At the same time we experienced a massive heat wave that severely affected our 2000 plus breeding cows. The turnaround in the strength and energy in the cows and calves was almost immediate, added to this is the fact that there was no risk of urea poisoning if the product got rain on it which is a major consideration at all times in this area. The ability to easily vary the mix of the product to control intake is also a good feature.
The Rural Supplement products our company use are very economical. Steers on the Multi Lik always hold condition even when the grass deteriates and move ahead quickly when the season breaks. The older cattle on the Turbo Power will gain weight even when the fodder disappears, which enables us to have prime cattle to sell all the time. The team at Rural Supplements are easy to deal with and are always on time with the product.
Jack Stewart-Moore
We’ve used Rural Supplements feed for the past five years for all our sale bull preparation we find the products consistent and reliable our bulls are presented very well. We use yearling developer early in our preparation and stud conditioner for the final six to eight weeks of sale preparation and find the coats and level of finish we get are consistently very good. We’ve also used the Turbo Power and Multi Lik for drought supplement also with great results. Sue’s family property is in the coastal wallum country and the breeders are better than they have ever been using Multi Lik.

Maus’ Slow Cooked Beef Ribs Prep time 10 minutes
Cook time 6.5 hours
Serves 4-5
Ingredients
The rub
The Marinade
2 kg Beef Ribs 5 tbsp American yellow mustard
4 tbsp smoked paprika ½ tbsp ground black pepper 1 tbsp mild chilli powder ½ tbsp sea salt 2 tbsp vegetable oil
4 tbsp brown sugar 2 ½ tbsp honey Large knob of unsalted butter 1 beef stock cube, crumbled 1 ½ tbsp water 1 tbsp liquid smoke (optional)
Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 130°c. Rub mustard over the ribs. Mix the rub ingredients together and pour over ribs and with hands rub all over covering all the meat. Place into a roasting pan with ½ cup water, cover with alfoil and roast 5 hours. 2. Then get a large sheet of aluminium foil (I use double thickness). Pour some marinade onto alfoil and spread. Place ribs on alfoil, meat side down. Pour the rest of marinade over, then bring edges together to make a sealed parcel. Cook for a further hour. 3. By this time they should be very soft. 4. Take ribs out of the oven. Turn ribs meat-side up, pour away excess juices and marinade, leaving enough to glaze meat. 5. Bake for another 35 minutes to finish in a 140°c oven. Rest for 5 minutes before serving. 6. Serve sliced or as full ribs with baked potatoes, sour cream and coleslaw. 44
