Future goals

Following what many describe as one of the worst seasons on record, the Brangus breed continues to thrive and remain popular. Brangus enjoyed, in most parts, an impressive saleyard acceptance for both seedstock and commercial commodities. With many now enjoying a welcome break, our future goals are to prosper and expand.

BONOX TAKES ROMA TOP AT $26,000 The ever consistent and key industry bull, Bonox 330 (Greendale Xciting) and his lineage, continue to exert a strong influence on the breed and it’s followers.

Mark Beckman, President, Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd

President’s Report I would like to commence my Presidents Report by welcoming all Members old and new as well as every Brangus enthusiast and supporter to the 2020 Autumn edition of “The Australian Brangus” magazine. From my last report in the Spring edition of 2019 to present day many members have had firsthand experience of the perils of Old Mother Nature. From Drought to raging bushfires, Flooding rains and dust storms it has been quite challenging on ones character and I do hope that the seasons return to some sort of normality for all. The 2019 Management committee elections fielded 2 nominations for Zone one director which resulted in a ballot between Kellie Silvester and Brad Saunders. Kellie was elected to the Board however had to resign her position due to personal reasons. The vacancy has since been filled by Brad Saunders and I would like to formally welcome Brad on to the board. I wish to thank Kellie for her contribution to the ABCA over her previous 2 year term and wish her well in the future. Luke Keogh returned to the Board along with myself and Fleetwood Grobler is the new Zone 3 director as Barry Morgan decided not to re nominate. I wish to acknowledge the dedication and commitment that Barry has given to the ABCA over many decades and wish him well in the future. Brangus sales in 2019 have had some highs and lows which you will read about later in the magazine, however the quality of Brangus cattle on offer has certainly been a hot topic of conversation at many saleyards, other breed society meetings as well as internationally. Congratulations to all vendors on presenting some outstanding Brangus cattle for sale. This year will see changes to the Classic Red Brangus Sale taking into account forced changes to the CQLX sale schedule. The CRBS group have decided to close their sale and offer their sale bulls and females at the Australian Brangus Cattle Association Sale at CQLX on the 12th & 13th October 2020. This will be a great opportunity for both vendors and buyers of both Red and Black Brangus to sell and purchase genetics at the same venue. The Brangus Youth Camp Committee have done an outstanding job on the organisation and delivery of their inaugural Youth Camp at Biloela in January this year. The dedication and determination of the committee and supporters to organise and run this event is a great testament to them. The desire they have to educate our Brangus youth as well as provide a social network for the participants is to be applauded by all. I also believe that even though the dust hasn’t quite settled on this camp that the committee are already planning for next year’s event. The ABCA Board of Directors have approved two Feature Shows for 2020 with the first one taking place on Monday the 4th of May at Taroom. The second Feature Show will be staged at Rockhampton on Wednesday the 10th of June. The ABCA wish to thank the committees of these two show societies for supporting Brangus as their Feature Breed and urge as many members as possible to support these events. The ABCA Board of directors are understanding of the difficult times and hardships that have occurred due to horrific seasonal conditions and the impact that it has had on our members. At a recent Board meeting the committee have reviewed the fee schedule for all transactions and have applied small increases in line with the Associations absorption of the CPI increases handed down over the past two years. This has led us to change the fee schedule and as a result we have changed to a flat fee and have abolished ALL late fees. Understanding that there are a lot of breeders who have animals over the age of 12 months and would be weighing up the decision whether to register them or not whilst incurring the late fees. Calf recording and full registration ages have now been extended to 24 months to allow members the opportunity to register or calf record animals that they may not have previously done. Flat fees will then be applied from the ages of 25 months to 36 months and then from 37 months & over for both males and females. In conclusion I hope that the gaps are finally starting to fill in and the seasons turn around for all the membership to enjoy. Kind Regards,

Rockhampton’s $1.498m result

The balance, strength and quality of the product on offer, combined with positive sentiment flowing from potential buyers, vendors, seedstock and commercial producers was the catalyst for an outstanding result at the 43rd Annual Rockhampton Brangus Bull and Female Sale. 30 vendors from across Queensland and New South Wales supported the offering of registered males, females and genetic material while a further seven supported the commercial female sale. Buying support was generated via online and a packed ringside gallery containing bidders and buyers from Queensland and interstate. At the end of two day sale 42 destinations had filled out and completed their buyers instructions slips and had supported the offering that featured five separate categories. Bulls hit highs of $50,000 twice to record an excellent average of $10,030. Registered heifers hit $13,000 while their commercial counterparts climbed to $1,100 per head. Semen averaged $50 per straw while 16 embryos fetched the same amount culminating in a $1.498m gross. 6

John Thomas, Executive Officer, Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd

The Executive Paper Dear Members, The past twelve months have been a massive test of the endurance of people on the land, small towns and communities throughout much of Australia. Firstly, we experienced possibly the worst drought in living memory, which seemed to last forever, with many involved in agriculture struggling to survive. Sadly some have not, with many cattle breeders forced to sell off breeding stock which will for some, take many years of rebuilding when things eventually turn around. Secondly, many areas were subjected to massive bushfires which destroyed around 15 million hectares of land, destroyed thousands of homes, killed around a billion native and farm animals, and worst of all cost the lives of 25 people. Some of these fires are still burning but are now under control. If it had not been for the heroics of our Firefighters it could have been far worse. Thirdly, many areas have received welcome rainfall in many parts of the eastern states which has eased, but not yet ended the drought and also brought many of the bushfires under control. We certainly live in a challenging country. The ABCA Board welcomed two new Board Members in 2019. Fleetwood Grobler is a Director and Zone 3 Representative while Brad Saunders is also a Director and is the Zone 1 Representative. Brad replaced Kellie Silvester who resigned due to personal reasons. Brad is well known to many members having previously served on the ABCA Board. In February a face-to-face Board Meeting was held in Toowoomba where many of the items that were tabled at the last AGM in Rockhampton were discussed as well as other important items that are Board responsibilities. Adjacent to normal agenda items, the Board had presentations and discussions with several invited guests. These included a presentation on Corporate Governance by Cameron Cowley (Moin Morris & Schaeffer, Solicitors), a presentation by both Paul Williams and Tim Emery (TBTS) on genomics and BreedPlan which was followed by an in depth discussion regarding the future particularly with respect to ABCA. The Board also met with agent representatives from Elders, Grant Daniel & Long and Ray White with regards to how, if any, aspects of the running of the ABCA Roma and Rockhampton Sales can be improved. Jane Lowe (Australian Community Media) also gave a presentation regarding marketing of the breed and what services that they (ACM) are able to provide. Kent Ward and Paula Driscoll (KB Consulting and Rural Design) provided an update on The Australian Brangus magazine. Kind regards,

In a recent press release the group announced that the bulls and heifers that would have been usually aligned and offered at the 2020 Classic Red Brangus Sale will instead be offered within the catalogue at the Australian Brangus Cattle Association Rockhampton Sale, CQLX, Gracemere Saleyards, Monday 12th and Tuesday, 13th October 2020. side of breeding cattle. From this interest I decided in year 11 that I wanted to follow that interest so I applied at UQ (Gatton) to complete a Diploma in Agribusiness Management. In 2017 we purchased four beautiful weaner bulls from the Braveheart stud. After handling and working with them I decided Brangus was what I desired to breed. Also, in 2017 I helped out at the Forest Hills Stud, working and breaking in a group of 20 weaner bulls and heifers, this only added fuel to the fire. In 2018 I assisted both Braveheart and Forest Hills prepare and present show cattle in the ring at Beef 2018. During all of this I had begun studying at UQ Gatton. Mid 2018 I registered my stud prefix, Black Label and later that same year I purchased two heifers from Yaraandoo with the help of my sister and Kelly Silvester. To finish off the year I also attended the Royal Brisbane Show taking out the Senior Parader.

2019 Burnham Youth Award Annalee Godwin, Tanderra, Springsure is the proud recipient of the 2019 Burnham Youth Award. Here is her submission to the selection panel. “Once you go black, you never go back”. I don’t remember who told me this exactly but I believe it applies. Brangus cattle have been a part of my life for well over a decade and counting. My passion for Brangus started through podding calves. In late 2009 and early 2010 we had almost 20 calves to care for ranging in colour and size however by far the hardiest and best doers of the lot were the Brangus cross calves. The now cows from that lot of calves still live behind the house and look a million dollars all year around including consistent calves on the ground and huge personalities. I always had a love for cattle working at home but attending Rockhamton Grammar School really helped to cement it. While at school I joined the show cattle team and gained a passion for stud cattle. I soon out grew the show team and started helping multiple studs at shows and attending junior cattle camps. I soon gained an interest in the genetic 20

Autumn – 2020

In 2019 with the help from my father we selected 16 commercial Brangus heifers from his herd to register at enrolment level under my prefix, Black Label. Early in the year I was also approached by the Australian Brangus Cattle Association and invited to join President, Mark Beckham and Vice President, Kellie Silvester in America to attend the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show, Texas. Both my sister and I attended and got the chance to assist two studs, G-Bar and Skyhawk Brangus. We helped to both prepare and present the cattle in the ring for both studs. We were also given the chance to meet Dr Tommy Perkins past Executive Vice President of the International Brangus Breeders Association. The Genetic Edge XXIV sale was also held in Houston which was eye opening to attend. The trip was an experience like no other and helped us to establish international friendships for a life time and we truly grateful to be given the opportunity. Also, this year I attended the Gatton Show with the Rockyview Stud and competed in paraders. I recently just came home from the RNA where I assisted with multiple studs and took out second place in the Senior Parader class. I have also recently graduated from UQ Gatton with a Diploma in Agribusiness Management. I hope to soon find a job working with stud cattle and pick up an AI course along the way. I learnt a lot of cattle management and selection skills off my parents however, I have never ran a stud so the registration, hair sampling and the focus of selected bloodlines were all new to me. With the help of the staff in the ABCA office and Zone 1 representative, Kellie Silvester as well as many others, I was able to feel welcome to ask question and get help when required. I aspire to breed high quality Brangus both structurally sound and are able to perform in almost any conditions for both stud and commercial producers, without jeopardising temperament. I want to remain honest in my breeding and honest to myself. In the future I would like to start my own red Brangus line from scratch. Annalee Godwin

"Our next generation"

We find ourselves in an uncertain economic (and weather) climate involving highs and lows in terms of pandemic viruses, political standings, severe droughts and floods, high cattle and commodity prices, and continued high land values, all of which affect the back bone of our great country, the primary producer.

Your succession plan – making sure it’s worth more than just a handshake On top of this we are seeing an unprecedented transfer of wealth through the baby boomer generation and changes in attitude of both younger and older generations in terms of their succession planning, with it recognised that the older generations have a desire to retire comfortably, while the younger generation want to seize the opportunity. 28

Autumn – 2020

There are extraordinary opportunities • in many states, the abolishment for primary producers to take of stamp duty on the transfer advantage of tax and duty concessions of primary production business as part of their succession (and property (including water licences) retirement) planning including: where the property is intended to pass between generations (noting • the small business capital gains tax the concessions differ in each state). concessions and other forms of rollover relief available under the For most primary producers, there is Income Tax Assessment Act; often an inherent link between family and their businesses.

Given the intricacy of family relationships, formally recording your succession plan has many benefits, in that they: • formally record the plan and, as much as possible, provide certainty of outcome; • are good corporate governance in that they provide practical answers to decision-making and the goals of individual family members and businesses; and • if there is a threat of future litigation, including risks of family provision applications, they are evidence of recorded intentions and can help to preserve ensure that assets are passed as you intended. Too often we see family businesses reliant upon the old ‘bush handshake’ in terms of documenting their succession plans. While this may be considered an often unspoken business or personal arrangement, we are seeing that it does not regularly work as well in reality as it does in theory because an agreement ‘in principle’ is simply not as firm as the hand it’s gripped with. A well prepared succession plan can provide a number of benefits including (as indicated above) reduced tax, transfer duty, the avoidance of disputes, and helping manage the transfer of control of a business and its assets, often in an asset protective manner. There are no one-fits-all documents when recording and implementing your succession plan (and this list is not exhaustive) but it can include: (a) a heads of agreement; (b) amendments to constitutions and trust deeds; (c) shareholder and/or partnership agreements; (d) certain option and buy/sell agreements; (e) property transfers and other forms of property agreements or dealings including leases, licenses, agistment and/or share farming agreements; (f) binding financial agreements; and (g) wills, enduring powers of attorney and nominations to deal with any superannuation. Most of the documents listed could be likened to a form of insurance, whereby once they are in place it provides certainty of expectation including by explicitly defining who, when and how a business and property owned individually or through other entities (including land) may be taken over. At the end of the day, undertaking your ‘plan’ improves the commercial nature and longevity of your business, supporting family members and lineal descendants along the way. Salisburys head to the States The Salisbury family of Bimbadeen Brangus, Eidsvold, recently travelled through to the United States to visit a number of Brangus operations. Our long-planned, three-week USA road trip in mid-December took us from Texas, through New Mexico and north through Utah and Idaho to Montana and Calgary. The most difficult part was actually leaving Bimbadeen in such terrible drought conditions, but we were fortunate to find a great caretaker and were rewarded with 30mm of rain on the night we left (giving us some comfort). Flying into Dallas from Brisbane saw us adjust to a 35C difference in temperature, as well as driving on the wrong side of the road! Our first stop (after an obligatory visit to Cavender’s Boot City) was Indian Hills Ranch at Cranfills Gap in Texas. Buck and Sidney Thomason are renowned for their great hospitality – we were delighted to spend time with them after first meeting in 2011 at the Houston Livestock Show and then during the 2012 World Brangus Congress when they toured Bimbadeen. The Thomasons have visited Australia on numerous occasions and been strong supporters not only of Australia-US Brangus relationships, but also providing foundation investment towards Australian Brangus Youth endeavours. We inspected the Indian Hills Brangus herd with Buck, seeing young bulls in the paddock through to females being used in the IH embryo program. The cattle here were very functional and it was great to see the influential Indian Hills Rudder in the flesh. A highlight of any visit to this beautiful ranch is the bespoke barn, which resembles an old western street inside complete with a bar! Our next ranch visit saw us head east to Pennridge Ranch at Paige, Texas, where Peter DeLeeuw, daughter Diann DeLeeuw 54

Autumn – 2020

Watson and family welcomed us to their spectacular complex. The Pennridge team were in the middle of synchronizing cows and heifers for Fall breeding at the time, but found time to show us their breeding team and the latest fall of calves. The Pennridge team focus on data with their selection and recently added Ultrablack genetics into the herd. There was something for everyone here, as the DeLeeuws breed both Brangus and beautiful Quarter Horses. Texan hospitality extended to some great burgers in the tiny township of Paige. As Brangus breeders who have used Brinks genetics over the past two decades, we were intrigued to have the opportunity to visit Westall Brinks Brangus in New Mexico, where a substantial herd of Brangus boasting full-Brinks genetics are now run. The operation and ranch are owned by Ray and Karen Westall, and managed by Tate Pruett. We enjoyed an extensive tour around the 50,000 acre property with Tate. The high desert property near the Capitan Mountain range sits around 6000 feet above sea level. The weather conditions here were among the coldest we experienced on the trip, down to -10C at night. CONTINUES PG 56

Despite very cold winds and partlyfrozen dams and ponds, we found the cattle in outstanding condition during our stay. The spectacular terrain is rocky with many canyons and offers great historical reminders, including a 130-year-old stone house constructed by the original Spanish cattlemen in the area.

We also caught up with ex-Bimbadeen jackaroos Lachlan and Callum Miller (who some might remember from Beef 2012 and 2015) who are now working and rodeoing in North America. The Brinks 2020 Sale bulls were an Our final bovineimpressive lineup of 100 young sires, related stop took us and we also inspected long-standing and to Lachlan’s workplace, Church Ranch super-quiet Brangus sire ‘Brinks Arabella Herefords, just north of Calgary, 1038’. The ranch was in the culinary highlights of the trip with full winter snow conditions and while some amazing Mexican food. not a Brangus operation, the feeding After the usual tourist stops of the regime (and horn ‘detailing’) was spiritual and spectacular Monument fascinating. Thank you

Since receiving the Burnham Youth Award in 2018, I’ve had many ongoing opportunities that have been granted to me through the establishment of this award. I have been able to extend my knowledge and understanding of the breed through the opportunity of Associate judging at EKKA 2019. Being in the ring with Mark Bauer from Ellara Brangus helped me learn more about examining an animal structurally and characteristically. He involved me in the whole process of the day, through sharing his thoughts and allowing me to voice my own opinions, to then make a collaborative decision on placings in each class. I’m also very grateful that he encouraged me to comment on various classes throughout the day. The experience of judging some of the finest bloodlines within the breed also helped me to develop my own personal preference in terms of stylistic and structural traits. From this opportunity, I will retain my newfound knowledge and apply it to future cattle judging as well as selection criteria in my own herd. I believe that this award is a great passage to help young adults transition from junior judging to judging cattle in general; whether it be in the ring, at the sale yards or simply up the paddock. It has allowed me to gain confidence in my own opinion and understand that everyone’s opinion will be different, which is why I believe the breed is so dynamic and versatile. Going forward, I hope to see more young people apply for this award because it is most definitely a beneficial experience. Isabella Hanson, Bullakeana Brangus, Moura

These included nutrition, Breedplan, DNA and sample collection, tag management systems, parading, animal structure, show box and shed preparation, rope tying, grooming and handling. The concept was the brainchild of Brad Hanson and Edward Quinn some years previous. The committee was made up of Brad Hanson (Committee Chair/ President), Bonni Geddes (Secretary), Katrina Brown and Gemma Van Itallie (Treasurer) along with their spouses and Edward and Kara Quinn. Longtime Australian Brangus identity, Bruce Burnham, celebrated a milestone birthday recently. Close friends and family gathered in Monto to help celebrate Bruce’s 80th birthday, including his eight grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their children. Bruce founded Bimbadeen Brangus in 1956 as a 17-year-old, was an original founding member of the Australian Brangus Cattle Association (Stud No. 9 in 1961), served for many years on the ABCA committee and as President from 1987-1990. He remains passionate about the breed and can be found each year at the Bimbadeen on-property sale. A treasured memento of Bruce’s birthday was the gift of a beautiful hand-cut steel and timber silhouette sculpture of a horseman and Brangus bull, purchased in aid of the newly-founded Brangus Youth Camp (pic). Bruce and wife Barb have always been strong advocates for the younger generations in the Australian Brangus industry, creating the Burnham Youth Award in 1998. Bruce attended the inaugural Brangus Youth Camp in January, taking great pleasure in seeing the younger generations of Brangus Breeders being encouraged and guided.
