Making A Difference

Madya N. Knighton

spotlight

Madya Knighton is making a difference in her community. Madya is the proud daughter of the late Anthony Knighton and Jonathan and Janice Gilbert. Born and raised in the quaint town of Cuthbert, Georgia, Madya has a strong desire to mentor youth and others. Her call to have an impact on local youth began nearly 20 years ago at Homebased Church in Cuthbert under her spiritual parents: Apostle Ulysses Davis and Prophetess Billie Ann Davis.

Madya began serving others in 1998, when she established and led a summer Bible-based camp called “Joining Jesus in June.” The summer camp was designed to provide participants not only Biblical-based teachings, but also academic support. The program was Madya’ first program to included volunteers, such as educators and various nonprofit organizations.

In 1999, Madya founded Big Pal Little Pal, which was an initiative designed to reach youth. “I saw a need for youth to have someone in their life to look up to. A number of youth lived in single parent homes, so it was important to have as many positive influences in their life as possible. I also strongly believe that God has given me a mission to help others,” she said.

In the Big Pal Little Pal program, youth were paired with a mentor, who was at least 18 years old or older and had similar interests. The program included student mentors from Andrew College. Mentors helped youth to develop short and long term goals, to develop positive attitudes, and to discover new interests and hobbies.

“The program had a number of positive results. It’s changing lives one by one. I have experienced first-hand participants opening up, changing their attitude, and striving to go in the right direction. As a principle, we remind each participant that God has already given them what he or she needs to be successful. There were a number of Big Pal and Little Pal participants who developed a life-long relationship long after their time in the program ended,” she said. The Big Pal and Little Pal program was such a success, Madya founded a non-profit organization called Pull’em Up F.A.M. (Fathers, Adolescents, and Mothers), Inc. She desired to make a positive impact on the well-being of the family unit as a whole.

“Pull’em Up F.A.M. addresses the family unit: fathers, mothers, and children. It’s designed to provide support and resources for families in need. We have pow wow sessions, workshops, and link participants to information and resources. Though the organization is supported solely by volunteers and donations, we’ve helped more than a 100 families in the community. It’s a rewarding feeling to help others and to feel like you’re making a difference in the lives of others.” Under Pull’em Up F.A.M.'s umbrilla are two additional programs: Pull’em Up Male Mentors and Ladies First. The Pull’em Up Male Mentors program was designed with an intense focus on males grades 9-12.

“Male participants establish goals for the year in three areas: academics, social, and athletics. What Madya N. Knighton Courtesy Photo

makes Pull’em Up F.A.M. effective is that through the program male participants learn how to be peer leaders. They learn how to share what they learned with their peers and most importantly how to teach by example. Participants learn self-responsibility and character,” Madya said.

The Ladies First program began as a pilot at Randolph-Clay High School in 2015. The program aim is to teach girls not only how to carry themselves but also etiquette.

“Ladies First is a unique opportunity for young girls to discover self-worth and to develop life-long friendships. In fact, a number of the parents who have children that have participated also have developed lifelong friendships with other parents,” Madya said.

Answering this call has given her joy and peace to walk in her destiny. To accept who you are. Has helped me to mature and to understand that what I have gone through prepared me for my future,” she said. “My long-term vision for the organization is to continue to impact the family unit in a positive way. I believe that it’s important to strengthen family dyGetRuralLeaderMag.com | SEPTEMBER 2017 21 namics and relationships for positive growth...Strong families make strong communities,” she said. Today, Madya not only manages Pull’Em Up F.A.M., she also moderates several Christian online communities that she founded: Co4C (Community Outreach for Christ) and CCC (Cuthbert Christian Corner). Co4C has nearly1400 followers and was designed to uplift and to inspire others to make a positive impact in the community. CCC with its 537 followers was designed to provide inspirational Christian messages for other believers.

Though Madya is busy following her life’s purpose, she has a strong commitment to family. “Above everything, I am a mom first,” she said.

She is the proud mother of five children: Fredersha, 22 Derrick, 17 Jermaya, 15 Kynnedy 10, and Tia, 5. She is also two grandchildren: Jasiah 7 and Kaelynn, 2.

“My first responsibility is to be the best mother that I can be. In doing that, I believe that qualifies me to share my knowledge and experience with others.” For more information about Pull'Em Up F.A.M. or its programs, write Madya at madyaknighton@gmail. com.——
