EDITORIAL

This has to be the best autumn we’ve had for quite a few years. The temperature has been perfect, with plenty of good rain and warm soil temperature to make things grow. This month... On the subject of growing things, Grant McKechnie discusses options for thinking on a grander scale when it comes to rural vistas, including the idea that trees are good options for our driveways and larger spaces. Duncan McNab helps us with managing sheep and cattle from autumn through to spring. I have written on a couple topics of particular interest to me this month. The first article discusses how to resow grass into our tired old paddocks, the second looks at the advantages of forage crops. This article will provide a few answers to farmers and landowners who have been looking at various cropping options and have the capacity to grow supplementary feed. It’s the National Alpaca Association’s Open Day on 1 May and Helen Martin reveals what we can expect from various alpaca breeders around our district on the day as they invite

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping a rural

block

By Grant McKechnie

Developing gardens on a rural block requires a shift in thinking if you are more accustomed to urban landscaping. In rural landscaping you operate on a much grander scale, for instance it is likely the quantity of plants needed will be substantially more than you’d need for your town garden. Conversely, the mature size of the plants used dictates that your thoughts about spacing have to broaden markedly. We’re comparing a 10m to 20m tall oak, for example, with a 2m to 3m camellia. For a rural landscape, don’t be afraid to paint with a broad brush — nice big sweeps of lawn, perhaps a good sized pond at the bottom of the garden and a drive of good width, with plenty of parking at the end. If we start with the drive first, and you plan to line it with trees, keep in mind the mature width of your chosen plant

when it comes to its proximity to the drive. Trees such as oaks, liquidambars, evergreen magnolias or claret ashes are all popular drive liners and all will get to 5m wide in 10 years or less and long term, 10m-plus wide, so their proximity to your drive has to be carefully thought out. Planted 3m from the drive, long term they are still going to encroach and not many people allow 3m either side of their drive for planting. So the options are to either use a smaller/narrower growing plant, or limb-up a broader plant. Smaller growing options could be Michelia doltsopa, a light, woodland-type evergreen, which apart from being a more manageable size, is easy to keep trimmed for shape and size

If you opt for one of the broader growing species I mentioned earlier - oak, liquidambar, ash, etc - limbingup might be an option. This is where you progressively remove branches (limbs), working your way up from the base of the trunk with the ultimate aim of having a bare trunk to above car height. Above this you allow the branches to grow across the drive. It’s important to limb-up progressively. If you are too aggressive about it and take off too many branches, you will retard the plant’s growth.

A pond of a different sort.

and gives you lovely scented flowers as well. Olives are also easy to manage for size and shape. For a small drive liner with a good shape, Magnolia stellata (star magnolia) is a good choice. It forms a dense, compact large shrub or small tree of about 2m to 2.5m, with dark green leaves that turn yellow in autumn and masses of strappy white flowers often pink tinged at the edges - in late winter/early spring. If you want height without width, deciduous Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’ (upright English oak), has good narrow form. It’s reasonably fastgrowing (about 8m tall x 3m wide in

10 years), with yellow autumn colour. Look for them in Albany village next time you drive through; they’ve been planted there for street trees. Crows Nest poplar is very similar to the traditional Lombardy poplar without being quite as tight formwise. It has early yellow autumn colour before dropping its leaves in May and in spring it takes on an attractive pink hue as its new growth opens. In the north, we use the Crows Nest in preference to Lombardy, because Lombardy can drop its leaves in summer if it gets leaf rust disease. It’s very fast and tall - 20m x 2.5m in about 10 years.

I like country houses and country gardens to have good sized lawns, with enough room for the Christmas Day cricket match with the family, or for the kids to play soccer with their friends, or for the little ones to learn to ride their pushbikes. You’ve got the space in the country, so you may as well use it to your best advantage. To make mowing your big lawn easy with the ride-on, make sure your curves flow nicely, with broad sweeps to get your mower round with ease. I also like to have destinations around the garden - a feature to visit, such as a garden seat or gazebo, or a pond to look out over.

Ponds are great for adding interest to your garden. Apart from the water itself, which is always restful to look at, ponds bring in a lot of bird activity. On our pond there are always ducks, of course, but we also have shags popping in for a feed of fish, as well as kingfishers sweeping down to skim insects off the surface.

Photo: Julie McKechnie

Now, there are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to planting around a pond. Firstly, make sure you don’t obscure your view by planting the surrounds with plants that get too tall on the side closest to your house, or from wherever you’ll be viewing the pond. Secondly, on the man-made sides of the pond/dam it’s unwise to plant big-growing trees, because in their quest for water, roots can track through the pond wall, causing it to leak. When it comes to digging holes for your plants, a little extra work is needed because pond banks are usually pure unadulterated clay, and often pretty solid because the sides have been packed down well. Best practice is to dig good sized holes, chuck the clay away and refill the holes with good topsoil. Don’t be tempted to spread topsoil all over the bank as it’s likely to wash off into your pond and it’s also likely to be full of weed seed, which will grow like topsy. That’s it for this month: more on rural landscaping next month - till then, happy planting.

By Helen Martin

Helen Martin talks to Duncan McNab about managing sheep and cattle through a farming calendar from April to October. We talked about managing sheep and cattle through a farming calendar from November to March in our February issue. I’m interested to hear your response to a reader’s comment that, while experienced farmers can successfully put their ewes out for mating in January as you recommend, lifestyle block owners should wait until March so when the lambs are born in August it’s warmer and there’s plenty of pasture. In the Rodney region, where I’ve been a farm advisor for 22 years, my clients regularly lamb over two and a half thousand ewes on small holdings in a season, with a lambing average of 165%. At the end of November 90% of these lambs are off the properties at an average 18 kilos carcass weight. So the early lambing system works very well for our lifestyle block owners. How should stock be managed from April on? You continue your rotational grazing system to try and get a bank of autumn feed saved up ready for the start of lambing in June. At the end of April you can look at a second shear of all the breeding ewes ready for lambing, although this practice has waned a little in recent years because of low wool prices and higher shearing costs.

IS GORSE OR SCRUB ERODING YOUR LAND’S PRODUCTIVITY? Before...

After!

For an online video demonstration visit www.allaboutearthmoving.co.nz

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites. Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth

mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

Is there an alternative? Yes, if a second shear management policy isn’t carried out the ewes should have a full belly crutch or at least a half belly crutch just before May lambing. This is to clear around and free up the teat area for the lambs and to avoid mud building up on the ewe’s belly, rear end and inside leg in the wet months. Belly crutching is a good time to give ewes a pre-lamb drench to eliminate the internal parasites that can turn up in the harsher winter months. It gives the ewes a head start. What else do you need to do to care for the pregnant ewes? You have to keep an eye on the ewes the whole time. Around late May and the beginning of June you need to inspect them for any signs of changes in their constitution. You’re looking to see if they’re doing well. There may be a foot or worm burden problem, or the beginnings of facial eczema. Take out any ewes that need special attention, like a drench, for example, and put them in a recovery paddock. They may need to stay out of mob if they have eczema, or even to be euthanased if it looks incurable. What preparations need to be made for lambing? Keep the rotation going to conserve and manage your feed supplies. As you move into June and start lambing, ‘shed out’ the ewes with the lambs, that is, take the main

mob away from them. This is because lactating ewes require a higher plane of nutrition, so they’re given the best saved pasture. The ewes also need shelter during lambing, so it’s good to work your rotation so there’s good shelter in the form of plantings or buildings. What are some good management ideas for caring for breeding cattle? In April you manage their feed and feed supplements to maintain good condition and body weight. You need a grazing system that suits your farm size and the age, weight and number of cattle you have. For feeding you have a choice of supplements like haylage (plastic-wrapped wilted grass), silage (grass cut and packed immediately into pits, rolled with a tractor to get air out and then covered with polythene) and hay. As with the ewes, breeding cattle need shelter and a good water supply and you need to watch them as they go into the winter to make sure they’re healthy. Lastly, it’s important on a lifestyle block not to overstock your property — whether you’re grazing sheep or cattle you need to be able to easily manage the farming processes you’ve adopted. That’s the key to developing a smooth and efficient operation and the key to getting the most out of your set-up.

who often rely on supplementing, but anyone buying in supplementary feed – sheep/beef farmers, horse owners and alpaca breeders included. Forage (cereal) crops have been well researched and have established a proven record across the country in the past 30 years or more. Benefits are that yields are usually higher than can be achieved with annual ryegrass and cereal crops offer an alternative maize silage with the advantage of lower input costs. In addition, they can grow successfully all year round.

By Neville Walker

We discuss the options for landowners wishing to planting forage crops. Are there gains or savings to be made from planting and harvesting your own cereal crops? Farmers commonly plant forage crops to meet feed demand and/or shortages. If forage crops are not available, supplementary feed must be brought in to cover any shortfall. During the 2010 drought there was controversy over whether Palm Kernel Extract (PKE) derives from sustainable sources and whether it should be used here. The signals are there. Demand for feed is increasing, so prices will follow suit. This will affect not just dairy farmers,

Optimise Your Pasture BOOK NOW for autumn sowing. • Grassing options to suit your animals or stock • High yielding forage crops for winter and spring • Improved feed management • Undersowing / seed drilling for improved seed strike and faster grazing rotation

There are many cereal crop varieties. Two of the most common sown at this time of year, triticale (Doubletake) and oats, have proven high yields, are very palatable to horses, sheep and beef and can be stored (baled) or grazed during winter.

Triticale Research conducted in 2003 revealed that Doubletake triticale improved cattle mean live weight gains by 230% over Nui ryegrass and that the net profit (live weight gain) of Doubletake triticale more than doubled when compared to standard ryegrass.* Triticale (pictured left) is a cross between wheat and rye corn. It can be planted in early spring, then harvested for silage production. Doubletake is a hybrid triticale designed for autumn planting. Its prolific nature means it can be grazed twice, then harvested again as silage in spring.

Oats Forage oats are another very good cereal crop to sow in autumn as they provide a real boost to feed levels during winter, with 30% or more dry matter than an annual ryegrass such as Nui. A further benefit is that, with

There’s more information on managing the first grazing, fertilisers and pests post-establishment than we can cover in this issue. Those topics will be discussed more comprehensively on our website, where we have a calculation table and other reference material.

relatively small areas of land, you can effectively provide a large quantity of grazing, quite possibly 5-8 tonnes of dry matter per hectare. There is a range of oat varieties with varying characteristics, depending on when you are going to sow, when you need to harvest and whether you intend to sell the crop on as balage. Oats can provide a buffer to cover the dry spring weather that can restrict the amount of grass silage able to be harvested. Cereals can cope with competition from weeds better than grass. Nonetheless, it’s best to have paddocks sprayed and carefully cultivated, or sprayed and direct-drilled (no tillage). If direct drilling, you’ll have to incorporate nitrogen-based fertiliser with the seed.

For now, we wanted to provide you with enough information to get started. Forage crops should provide good returns for acreages large or small, whether you’re looking to boost your own animals’ needs or selling off the crop to those who will inevitably need to cover feed shortages. The next step is to talk with a local agricultural contractor who is experienced in sowing and using these crops and who understands local soil and climate conditions.

Weed control is important with cereals, as weeds can impact on yields and quality at grazing or cutting. It’s best to spray early, before the cereal seedlings cover the ground.

National alpaca

open day

By Helen Martin

On both days of last month’s popular Kumeu Show there was keen public interest in the livestock competitions as the animals and their owners vied for the coveted top prizes. As always the alpacas drew good crowds, with adults and kids alike making the most of the opportunity to stroke one of these gorgeous, exotic creatures and to learn a little more about them. (See www.alpaca.org. nz/events/show_results for the alpaca results). If you didn’t make it to the Show this year but would like to get up close and

personal with an alpaca, you’ll have your chance on Sunday May 1st, when many alpaca breeders around Rodney (see the advertisements for one near you) will be taking part in National Alpaca Day by opening their farms to the public (www.alpaca.org.nz/events/ national-alpaca-day). You can visit as many farms as you like, and if you want to make a day of it you may want

to take a packed lunch to one of the farms or use the opportunity to try out some of the wineries in the area. The main purpose of the Open Day, the second to be held in New Zealand, is to enable owners to promote alpacas, alpaca fibre, and alpaca products and to let people know that on a lifestyle block a small, well-managed herd can produce reasonable returns.

There are two alpaca breeds, huacaya and suri, each producing a different type of wool. Many breeders sell wool from their farm shops - coming in 22 lovely natural colours from white through to a true black, this luxury wool is strong, soft and hypoallergenic, a great fibre for felting as well as knitting. Some breeders also sell alpaca carpet and clothing.

Photo: Diane Bulpit, Silcron Alpaca Stud

While alpacas can be farmed for their wool and to produce good breeding stock, more and more people are investing in a couple as pets (they’re gregarious, so you need at least two) who can earn their keep moonlighting as lawnmowers. Like domestic pets they come when they’re called and their upkeep is not arduous. They’re less prone to disease than sheep (although facial eczema can be a problem in humid weather), they happily graze alongside other animals and, with their inquisitive personalities, the consensus is they are a delight to own. If it’s information you’re looking for, the breeders will be happy to tell you what you want to know about the alpaca business - from breeding, to care and maintenance and, in some cases, to exporting. For a lot of people, the chance to see alpacas up close is the best thing about National Alpaca Day (and bear in mind that there will be baby alpacas, cria, on view at some farms). While they’re gentle, friendly and intelligent creatures alpacas they don’t like their heads being touched. But they’re happy to have their necks stroked – vital information if patting an alpaca is on your list of things to do. You’ll also, should you wish, be able to hand feed an alpaca and lead one on a halter. See for yourself. National Alpaca Day, Sunday May 1st.

animals’ nutritional needs during the growing season and carries them over through the winter. PASTURE

However, the reality is less than optimal for most of us. If your pasture is over 8 – 10 years old the grass will be past its use-by date. Especially so if it has a poor fertilisation history, experienced repeated pugging through winter and had hay taken off each season. It will inevitably under perform.

Re-seeding small

acreages By Neville Walker

I have been keen to start a re-seeding programme for a while now and for me it has to be a simple process that produces a lush, nutritious pasture quickly and inexpensively. Finally, I’m making a start and with just one hectare at a time to make it manageable, I’m going to share with you the basics of how I’m going about it.

Which seed mix? This question has stumped me from the outset. Most of the commercial re-seeding brochures are written for farmers whose livelihood is dependent on intensive grazing (and perhaps for small landowners who suffer from insomnia).

We have covered the topic of soil health as it relates to producing feed for stock. In this article we look at how to cope with tired old pastures.

One of the questions I wanted answered is: What seed mix will produce a pasture that is suitable for horses (and alpacas) as well as sheep and beef? We don’t run horses or alpacas, but we do want the option of providing a high quality hay for others who will need it.

Pasture with the right mix of grass varieties, regular fertilisation and careful weed management caters for our

We wanted to find a seed mix that controls grass staggers, as this summer more than one horse owner has commented on

problems with this condition (the same may have been true for those who run sheep, cattle, alpacas and deer). We wrote about grass staggers in the February issue (see our website for details). Ryegrass is thought to be the main cause of grass staggers, as endophytes living within the ryegrass can produce mycotoxins which, when ingested, can cause symptoms of trembling and loss of co-ordination. This puts horses at particular risk of injury. At the lower end of the scale of risk, some believe out-of-character behaviours, such as nervousness or strange responses, may possibly be a result of mycotoxicity. Although there are treatments for staggers my preference is for prevention (as the toxins do persist in stored hay), especially when I am considering selling the surplus hay next season. The best solution I believe is to re-seed our old, under performing pasture with low- or nil-endophyte grass varieties. One runs up against the problem that there seem to be few seed mixes off the shelf that are low- or nil-endo but are still good for cattle and/or sheep. I have found a couple of good options. One mix comprises a nil-endo ryegrass and about one third creeping red fescue (with the balance in white clover, red clover and chicory). The other mix is an Italian ryegrass combined with perennial ryegrasses (nil-endo) and mixed with the clovers and plantain, which will deliver high energy for sheep and cattle and yet is still good for horses.

The seeding process While a purist’s approach to re-seeding would involve careful planning in preceding seasons, there is a faster method for getting new seed sown and having it produce sufficiently for spring.

Most old pastures needing re-seeding will require lime, fertiliser and weed control. Our pastures have had the benefit of lime and fertiliser over the last 18 months, but if yours haven’t now is the time to consider having a soil test completed if you haven’t had one done already (before or after the seeding). Broadleaf weeds such as dock, buttercup and others will be prevalent in older, horse-grazed pastures, especially if you haven’t been on top of your weeds (let’s face it, most of us haven’t). If you want to give your new seed the best start, have your exisitng pasture sprayed out completely. There are options for organic weed sprays (using pine extract), but be prepared to increase your budget. After spraying, have the stock graze back the pasture (leave at least a day if using glyphosate and refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for any withholding period specific to the weeds and/or chemcial used). Re-spraying just prior to re-seeding will help knock any emerging new weeds on the head as well, but if there’s not time before the soil temperature drops (in mid-late May) you can control for weeds with selective herbicides after sowing. Re-sowing in later winter/early spring is an option, but you need to be wary of the potential for moisture deficits (which will affect your seed strike rate) and the emergence of annual weeds which will crowd out new grass shoots.

To till or not to till Tillage of the soil is the process of working over the soil (cultivating, plowing, disking and harrowing) to control weeds, aerate the soil and create a fine tilth which can be leveled and smoothed to allow easier sowing and covering of the seed. This popular method of seed bed preparation also facilitates the incorporation of lime and fertiliser.

Alternatively, the move to no-tillage seeding (under-sowing the seed so as to leave the surface as intact as possible) has been gathering momentum for quite a few years now. This process relies on treatment (usually a herbicide) of the weeds prior to directly ‘drilling’, where seeds are inserted below the surface using knives that carve a shallow slot.

No. of P From:

There seems to be good evidence to suggest there are benefits to no-tillage seeding/under-sowing. The thinking is that, by leaving the previous vegetation residues to decay on top, the organic matter near the surface increases, providing a rich food source for the soil microbes to do their job of improving soil structure. Under-sowing also protects the seed from birds and reduces moisture loss. The other major benefits are that there is less machine and labour input required and therefore it’s faster and easier on resources… and your pocket*. With the good rainfall, sunshine and warm soil temperatures we’re currently having, this autumn has to be one of the best in years for achieving a good seed strike rate. So I’m off to order the seed (see advert page 15) while I’m waiting for the paddocks to brown off. We’ll feature more on the process of managing the grass establishment, including pest control, via our website – watch for updates on how the process is going.
