Liquid gold and common colds Thankfully there was more than a wandering star before Christmas…a wandering depression that bore gifts of liquid gold. As one Northland farmer put it – “Hear that money hitting the roof?” There were all sorts of doubts, but the Met service stuck to its guns … that there was a reasonably good chance of a depression swinging in between the highs (page 16). So with La Nina forecast to be around until March, it poses the question…with the dry spell coming early, does that mean the wet season will come early too? This month we welcome a new member to our team as a writer and salesperson. Logan Tudehope comes from a national rural web media business, Rural Trader. Living with his three-year-old son Blair on a 10-acre block in Kumeu has provided the material for many a tale for his column Logan’s Run and other articles in his previous life. This month Logan writes on the 144th Warkworth
show to kick off the New Year. And now for something completely different for us… if you’re looking to establish a website for your homebased or rural business but have a shoestring budget, this article from local publisher and web-builder Steven Hart could be what you’re looking for. Steve developed his first website himself after receiving a real shock as to the cost of using a professional web development company. Also this issue, Helen writes of her eye-opening experience in evaluating her electricity consumption and a new device that’s helping to reduce her energy bills.
I trust you and your family have a safe and relaxing holiday break over this New Year period.

Eco-bulbs are a much more efficient light source.
A son hoping to win a hybrid car when he entered an online competition run by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) instead won a lighting and energy package. To our delight, because he doesn’t own a home, he generously gave the prize to us. Looking up the EECA website (www.eeca.govt.nz) we found the competition was part of a campaign aimed at increasing public knowledge
of energy efficient lighting and energy savings in general. When the letter of confirmation arrived from EECA we found the prize consisted of; a Centameter, valued at $250 (we had no idea what that was); a residential energy assessment to be
Electricians gain EcoSmart registration by completing a course run by ECANZ, the Master Electricians organisation and EECA competition sponsor (www.ecanz.org.nz). Looking for the EcoSmart electrician closest to Helensville, Master Electricians, the competition sponsor, came up with Alpha Electrical, a father/son company based at Waimauku. First up Luke and Alf Nabarro arranged for the installation of the Centameter. We learned that this is a small electronic device with a wireless connection to your meter that measures and displays the hourly cost of your electricity use, beeping when you exceed your pre-set limit (we set ours at $2 per hour). The purpose of the Centameter is to encourage consumers to save power by constantly monitoring how much you’re using and what it’s costing you. (See more at www.centameter.co.nz). To gauge our energy use Luke completed an EcoSmart residential check sheet, an exhaustive list of things to consider, starting with a thorough assessment of our power plan, then checking it against the competition to see if we were getting the best deal. From the website (www.switchme.co.nz) we found there was a cheaper option and made the decision to switch power companies (it should have been quick and easy - it soon turned into a bureaucratic nightmare, but that’s another story). We should have installed solar power when the house was built – that’s still on the to-do list - but our house faces north, is well insulated, has plenty of sun-trapping glass windows and doors and for winter heating there’s a super-efficient wood burner, so all the heating and ventilation questions got a big tick on the check sheet. Our lighting was another story. The house was built 5 years ago, just before eco bulbs were in common use, so the room-by-room check of the type and number of lights installed turned RURAL LIFESTYLE ISSUE 40

economical. We learned that replacing the incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents lamps (CFLs) would enable considerable financial and energy use savings. There will be other savings as the lamps can last up to 3 years and our light fittings will have a longer life due to the new lamps having a much lower heat output. Over a year we expect to save around $500.
At first I thought having the Centameter was going to make us a bit neurotic, as its beeping (always at night when the (Normally $249.95 plus installation). stove was being used) sent us all into a lather of turning things off. covered. Theiteco lights currently in favour, while they are a big improvement on the old lights, are of course an interim measure, given that LED lighting puts out more light and less heat and is by far the most energy efficient. Lighting companies are now no longer making high wattage incandescent lamps (e.g. 75w and 100w) as they are highly inefficient. LED lighting costs, which have been prohibitive, are now coming down and within reach of the household consumer.

Some facts Conventional incandescent bulbs cost around $2.50, use up to 100w of power and last around 6 months. CFLs cost around $8, use from 11w to 20w and last about 3 years. Resistance to using these lamps because of the mercury content has waned as people have seen how far the technology has come since they were first introduced. The light output is now far superior now and they are compatible with many down-lights. (The $8 CFLs don't work with dimmers so you need to buy dimmable eco lamps at around $30). As a replacement for old incandescent lamps CFLs greatly reduce the risk of heat build-up and fire, especially if the down-lights are covered by insulation. As they contain mercury, CFL lamps must be disposed of safely. Electricians collect them for collection and disposal by a recycling company. LED lamps for halogen down-light replacements cost around $50, use around 5w8w but last up to 40,000 hours, with a payback in around 2 years. New fittings that replace a standard 80mm down-light, run 6 hours a day, will cost only $4 to run for the whole year!

address and he lived around the corner. Still, in those early days of the net it seemed quite cool to have an email address on my business card. These days of equal importance to the email address is a website. While many businesses recognise the importance of a professional looking website as a promotional tool that works 24/7, many report that the process of creating and updating their website is far from easy.
Building websites
the easy way Talking about how to set up your own website may seem a bit left field for a rural lifestyle magazine, but we’re aware there are many businesses operating from home offices in rural Rodney, and others thinking about getting a small business started.
Despite dabbling in web design for years, I still find the programming code behind many websites (HTML or PHP) a foreign language. While creating a basic site has become easier, I dread to think of the thousands of dollars I have handed to web designers over the years to tweak my sites at $130+ an hour. Websites can be expensive to have built but they need not be. There are now cost-effective ways to have an easy-to-use website that looks great, enables novice users to painlessly upload pictures, video and text in a trice and has its own content management system (CMS) for users to create and manage their site.
Creating your own website
So we’ve asked Steve Hart to share some ideas on how to get a website up and running without it involving a lot of expense.
You too can be up and running with your new website in a couple of hours (or less) of reading this feature as I take you through the process of installing a website based on WordPress software – and it’s all free as long as you have a domain name to upload the content to (see www.wordpress.org).
Ever since I got my first email address – a random set of 10 numbers followed by ‘@compuserve.com’ – I have been hooked on the net. Most of my friends couldn’t see the benefit of email and wondered who would use it. They had a point. In 1993 I knew only one other person with an email
Although there are plenty of other free CMS tools available, most people agree that WordPress is the leading free CMS worldwide and with international brands like Wall Street Journal Magazine, New York Times and 42below.com using it, you can understand why. Local examples of WordPress

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites. Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth
mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

But before the fun begins, we have to get a little bit technical. You see, WordPress requires that your website host – the people you pay to make your website available to the world – needs to have PHP and MySQL software installed and available to you. So, before you install WordPress, check your site (via its control panel) to see if these are a part of your hosting plan. If not, you may have to upgrade. It will be well worth it. Now, accessing your web domain’s control panel (such as C-Panel) create a MySQL database, give it a name and a password and write this down very carefully in a safe place. Once you have WordPress on your computer, unpack it from its compressed file by double clicking on it.

Here’s the tricky bit. Inside your expanded WordPress folder is a file called wp-config-sample.php. Change the name of this file to: wp-config.php. Then, using a basic text editing program such as Notepad (don’t use Microsoft Word) you need to alter some of the text in this file. See the installation notes (in the sidebar) and add in the details of your newly-created MySQL database. Everyone who downloads WordPress gets the same set of files, so you need to make yours unique to help prevent any unwanted visitors getting access to your site down the track. Copy the WordPress folder to your domain name using an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. Once up and running, your website will be a basic blogging site, which although useful, may not be quite what you want. Now the real magic begins. There are thousands of free themes and plugins that can give you a highly professional-looking website with advanced functionality. You can find most of the themes on the WordPress site under Extend and then search the Themes directory. Simply select a theme you like the look of, download it and then upload it to your WordPress’s Themes folder (plugins go in the plugins folder). Experiment with different themes until you find one you like the look of and are comfortable with. Upload, try out, delete, try again. You might want a two-column or a three-column theme, a magazine style or a blogging style. While you are bound to find something that suits you, there are firms that sell themes. And if you are looking for something very special you may need to go down this track.

A silver-bullet for a cold? By Neville Walker
When we have a cold (or any ailment) the placebo effect can be very strong … if we believe something will cure it, it very often does. So when Nicky and I find some herbal children’s mixtures shift the kids’ colds more quickly we’re pleasantly surprised. The kids are so young when we first start using herbal cold formulas I can’t imagine their having any belief attached to their effectiveness one way or the other. Recently I have been hit by two colds in quick succession. A good friend who swears by colloidal silver recommends I try it. I’m deeply sceptical but figure it’s worth a try and buy a nasal atomizer of colloidal silver, which I take at the outset of symptoms for my next cold. (I don’t want to ruin your placebo effect if you’re a convert to natural remedies… so look away now!). Result? The cold aims straight for my head and hangs around for a week. Back to my friend to tell her it must work for her because of the placebo effect, only to be told I should have been taking 20 - 40mls thrice daily instead of just squirting it up my

nose. I’m still unconvinced, but to prove her wrong beyond reasonable doubt I try again, this time using the correct dosage. By the next day my cold has noticeably improved. Although I feel worse the following day I persist and by day 3 the cold has gone! Nothing... no watery eyes, no runny nose, no coughing. Very strange. And it definitely was a cold (with lethargy, heavy head, sore throat) - and I don’t get hay fever. But what just happened? Okay, maybe my friend has a point… maybe it worked….? Using colloidal silver for medicinal purposes is controversial – on the web there’s a wealth of material on it, much of it contradictory, so I intend to do some reading around the issues with a view to writing an article further down the track. If you have had similar or even contradictory experiences, please drop me a note or email and let me know your thoughts about and experiences in using colloidal silver.

As I watch I always think I should add some steriliser as the flood of fresh town-supply water, while chlorinated, stirs up the sediment and with it the microbes and bugs. I quite often hear, “I’ve lived on tank water for years and it’s never once put me crook”, but while that may be true it could be that it’s not a matter of ‘if’, it’s a matter of ‘when’.
Water water everywhere,
Here’s what I’ve learned about lessening the chance of illness from the host of dreaded lurgies that flourish inside the water tank over summer months.
but is it safe to drink? That makes 7 tank-loads of town-water for 2010... a first for our household! La Nina launches summer with yet another drought (although with the possibility of occasional big dumps forecast). Whether you’re shelling out for another load of town water supply or enjoying a tankful from a passing ‘low-pressure system’ something to be considered is that both sources of water bring with them another issue… water quality. Most days I find myself anxiously staring at the water tank level gauge and wondering if there’s a low pressure system big enough to swing down from the tropics and fill the tanks. Do I call Steve, our water carrier, who has become
Water tanks should be cleaned out every one to two years. Even though I cleaned ours out last summer I can see how much sediment lies on the bottom already. That sediment provides the perfect breeding ground for E.coli. We have written about the subject in a previous article (Issue 30, p. 17), but given the number of questions we receive about pumps, tanks and filters, we’ve decided to briefly touch on the topic again. E. coli in its many forms is mostly harmless except for one particular variety which, when ingested in a significant quantity, can make us feel slightly off colour, through to making us vomit. Worse still, under-fives and the elderly can become gravely ill. How do we ingest it? E.coli can live inside the gut of healthy cattle and birds (have you ever noticed how birds love to peck through cow poo?). When it rains all that lovely bird poo sitting below our TV aerial and elsewhere on the roof gets washed into the spouting and then into the water tank.

so well known to us lately? Usually I phone him just before the tank runs dry and the pump cuts out. After checking how desperate we are for water, he happily assures us of his delivery time frame and a few hours hence 10,000 litres of fresh water are flooding into the tank. Saved!

1-micron poly spun filters like this one will not stop E.coli!
Now there are millions and millions of tiny E. coli sitting in the bottom of the water tank. And don’t think normal filters are going to block it, as E. coli. will pass straight through anything that filters down to 1 micron. How do you reduce the quantity of E. coli getting into the drinking water supply? The first line of defence starts inside your tank. First-flush systems are very good at stopping the first wave of contaminants (this is a whole
other topic but try googling ‘first flush water treatment’ or similar) and there are also in-tank flushing systems such as Tank-vac. If there is not one attached, install a small stainless steel screening filter onto the one-way valve (to stop back flow) that is attached to the outlet pipe (which droops down from the tank wall to the centre). For added protection, attach a float to the outlet pipe so there is less opportunity to suck sludge off the tank floor. Next, fit a filter (1-5 micron) in line with the flow coming from the pump. You could also add a carbon filter to reduce potential spray residues from your roof and/or the chlorine taste that comes with town-supply. There are two choices to treat the whole house at this point. The first is an ultra-membrane filter fitted after the other filters and pump. (These filter out the nasties to varying degrees from 99.99% up to 99.9999%). The other alternative is UV light, which is very effective in neutralising the bugs and microbes.
UV sterilisation units are fitted after the pump also and most units will sterilize at least 99.97%, so your water will be safe to drink providing you have the units serviced every year. Membrane filtration units on the other hand are usually less maintenance because they can selfclean. Speaking of servicing, we recently had to replace our household water pump. When the unit started making funny whirring noises one Saturday morning, I clambered under the house and found the pump’s casing was cracked. After replacing and reinstalling it, the whole unit then died. The local pump specialist revealed the primary cause of death was electrical fusion. This could have possibly been prevented with regular maintenance. We all resist getting someone to pop out and give the pump and system a once-over every 12-24 months or so. But perhaps after spending $1700 dollars on a new pump, regular maintenance might be a good idea from now on…

upcoming show. Perhaps the most notable of these is the addition of a large (36m by 18m) marquee on the main arena to house the produce and home craft indoor sections. It will be home to gourmet food displays and will showcase local wineries (including tastings). The popular Leigh Sawmill Brewery will also be offering samples of its craft. Small local breweries and micro-breweries are growing rapidly in popularity and this aspect of the show is sure to be a hit.

Warkworth Show stands the
test of time Chelsea and her team.
The Warkworth A&P Show is preparing to celebrate its 144th birthday on the weekend of January 22nd & 23rd, 2011. This popular event is in the top five for longevity of A&P shows in New Zealand. In its 144 year history, it is believed that only one year was missed. This occurred during World War II, although precise details are a bit sketchy due to much of the original records and documentation being lost in a fire in the 1950s. Following the completion of ground improvements, some significant changes have been implemented for the
Sheep racing is on the agenda, including Greg Clarke’s Great Ewe Sheeplechase. Also on display will be alpacas, dairy and beef cattle, pet lambs and goats. There will be a Young Handler Competition and the perennial favourite, Calf Club, will also have a strong presence. Returning after a few years' absence, the shearing competition should draw a good crowd into the brand new Shearing Pavilion. Deserving mention is the supremely talented Chelsea Marriner who hails from Rotorua. Chelsea has a team of eight Collies (all of which sleep in her bedroom!) which she has trained to perform a truly dazzling array of tricks. She and her team are in great demand the length of the country. In the last few months Chelsea returned from the World Champs in the UK where she took top honours, but was unable to take her own dogs with her. She had three days to prepare with a team of dogs unfamiliar to her. There is also a comprehensive Trade Display and various sideshows and stalls will provide all the fun of the fair. There will be lots to keep the kids entertained too with games, the Show Queen and Princess, Fairy and Pirate Competitions.

PURPOSE Commercial, industrial, rural & residential. With mezzanine floors there is more useable space. No knee braces.
Charming Quest.
There is always strong support from the locals and wider Rodney and many holiday makers, typically from the Rodney beaches, make a day of it. The main public day is Saturday the 22nd when an excess of 8,000 is expected to pass through the gates. A Priority Parking ticket which provides literally ringside parking is available for $10. People are welcome to buy lunch from one of the many food outlets, or bring their own food and refreshments. Sunday the 23rd is more specifically for the equestrians among us and features a gymkhana and demonstrations and in an event guaranteed to be a hit with the crowd the dressage girls will put on quadrille displays.

Coping with drought weather report
What the Met says... With the government in December officially announcing drought conditions everywhere north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Rodney’s lifestyle block owners and farmers have been anxiously gazing into the crystal ball for summer weather news. And then it rained for days!!! Now I’m confused – but here’s a brief summary of the MetService’s analysis and predictions (www.metservice.com/ national/index). From October to early December anti-cyclones have been lazily crossing the New Zealand area and several highs have lingered in the Tasman Sea, producing extended dry periods over eastern and central districts. Because the troughs between these anti-
cyclones have been brief and fleeting, the only places receiving normal rainfall have been eastern districts such as Coromandel, and coastal parts of Canterbury and Otago. Computer models predict that the current moderate to strong La Nina episode (where cooler than normal seas are surrounded by a warmer than normal pool of water) which is building in the Tasman Sea is likely to last until at least March 2011. It should shift the normal weather zones southwards so its effects will vary across different parts of New Zealand. The easterly trade winds normally found in the tropics are likely to extend southwards over north eastern parts of New Zealand, bringing occasional rain.
By Neville Walker
For those of you looking for ways of coping with livestock in a summer drought, it’s worth revisiting suggestions made by Bev Trowbridge in Issue 31 (April 2010, p.6 - we’ll re-post it to our website). Also, we have found out some in other parts of the country have been establishing fodder ‘banks’ to store up pasture for times of drought. The process of re-structuring land use for improved pasture performance is not a quick fix unfortunately, but we’ll have more on that in the near future. One of the simplest strategies is not to hard graze the pasture to dust. Rotating stock quickly through (experts suggest leaving half the leaf bulk) lessens the impact on the roots and a longer recovery period helps the sward recover more quickly.
