EDITORIAL

Driving around rural Rodney you see many an old shed and I’ve often wondered what unique histories they contain. Well, here’s one old shed that won’t disappear without sharing some of its stories thanks to reader Krista Fletcher, whose fabulous contribution, which captures the essence of the life of an old family rural shed, leads this issue. Next, Helen Martin reveals her experience of a different kind of interest in rural sheds, as over Christmas and New Year thieves have been taking advantage of the accessibility offered by rural properties. One reason I started this magazine was to provide a means of closing the gap between farmers’ wealth of knowledge and that of newcomers, particularly lifestyle block owners (aka small farmers). Duncan McNab, a Helensville farmer for some 22 years, is well-known in

the district as past President of the Auckland Agriculture and Pastoral Association, cattle judge, dog trial organiser and competitor and sought after expert and speaker on matters relating to farming. Helen Martin has found a way of distilling Duncan’s years of accumulated knowledge with regular interviews and we are very pleased to be able to bring you a wide range of topics, under the column title Farming Matters, each month. This month Duncan is sharing his knowledge on managing sheep and cattle at the start of the farming year.

run an equipment or farm vehicle advertorial, so when the opportunity came up to review Mazda’s BT-50 utility vehicle, Logan threw up his hand, revealing he might know a thing or two about that particular model. Enjoy.

And again on the farming front, even though we had good rain last month and the grass has recovered somewhat, maintaining healthy animals is always of prime concern at this time. Logan Tudehope reports on what we should be looking out for right now and on how to manage our animals’ health issues.

This old

shed

The old shed stands in the yard looking forlorn and beaten among others of varying sizes and ages. While it obviously is the oldest building, it is neither the largest nor the smallest, but it certainly is the tattiest with holes in the wall, holes where windows once were and corrugated iron patches, some

hanging off at odd angles. The last time it saw a paintbrush was probably when it was first built. The front doors are long gone, leaving it open to the weather and from the fractured frame over the front, hang the remnants of a blue tarp which wave gently in the breeze. From the side it looks like the front has sunk into the floor and from the front the roof drifts to one side and it appears to be waiting for a good blow to reduce it

to rubble. It seems that only the hay that has been stacked to the broken rafters for the past twenty odd years is all that has kept it standing. The shed began its life as a prefabricated building, built by the American servicemen who were stationed at Kaipara Flats in WWII. Towards the end of the war when the Americans were packing up to head back to the States my father in law bought up numerous sheds and sundry buildings and took them home to his farm in Kaipara Flats. No doubt he had plans for all of them but this one was destined to become a hayshed cum implement shed and housed various bits of farm machinery, cars and numerous treasures that caught the attention of a family of small boys. It was assembled on a concrete foundation, with a concrete base about 2 feet high and a dirt floor. The timber was untreated, so it is amazing that it is still standing, albeit precariously and has not succumbed to the elements. When we took over the farm a few years ago, we found a large amount of timber stacked in the rafters. RURAL LIFESTYLE ISSUE 41

3

The timber, which had been earmarked for a house project, had been stored there for many years. My brother in law told me his mother had waited years for a new house. Who knows why it never got built. By the time we found it, the timber was rotten and unusable. Today the shed is still in use. It houses the farm tractor, although it would probably be better off out in the weather since the birds roost and nest above it. The chooks hide their eggs in it, the cat sleeps in it and the mice frolic in it. Last year the old huntaway quietly expired in a nest of hay in it. A haybaler that has seen better days is parked up in the corner along with sundry bits and pieces waiting to be taken to the dump. These days it is no longer weatherproof and hasn’t been for some years and begs the question, do we tear it down and rebuild, or save it?

Should it stay or should it go...?

For the moment feelings hover between sentimentality and practicality and right now, the jury is still out.

lock your shed According to the local papers burglars have a special affection for Helensville stuff... but up until now all they’ve managed to get out of us is one much prized bromeliad – the woman who stole it would no doubt have helped herself to more had it not been for the fact that I caught her in the act and she scarpered. (You can run, but you can’t hide Madam - I will know you when I see you). And then, having survived the Christmas flurry, dealt with a spontaneously imploding shower door and got into the rhythm of visiting a very ill friend in Auckland hospital in between bouts in the garden, we get

a call from our son who volunteers for the SPCA in Mangere and who, taking time out for a snack at the nearby shopping centre, has locked his keys in the car. Dropping everything we race to the rescue, fitting in a hospital visit and a long lunch at a fabulous Kumeu café on the way home. It’s not until Keith goes looking for a drill a couple of days later that we discover our shed has been ransacked. All the power tools except the chainsaw have gone, and a few nonelectric items, but not the mower (too big and heavy?) and not any of my paintings. What’s wrong with these burglars, have they no taste?

The police are very understanding. There’s been a spate of shed burglaries in Helensville over Christmas and the cops are on the case. We worry the insurance company may not be equally understanding. They’re already up for big dollars to fix the shower door and chipped bath and may play hard to get. Bingo! By the time we pay insurance excess ($250) and extra insurance excess ($150) and lose our no claims bonus, it looks like we're going to owe the burglars money. On January 7 we go to the Kumeu Stihl shop for a written quote for the cost of replacing our brush cutter and are told by the shop assistant ours is the sixth such quote burglary victims have asked them for this year! RURAL SECURITY

By Helen Martin

We work out it happened on the day of the rescue because, in our hurry to get away, we’d not only left the shed unlocked (doh!), we’d also left the chainsaw down in the garden, a long way from the shed.

Mazda BT-50 – A workhorse with Achieving a balance between off-road workability and comfortable highway cruising has stumped car manufacturers ever since the wheel and the internal combustion engine were first married. Mazda have used the BT-50 to show everyone how it’s done. Like so many one-tonne utes, this one is assembled in Thailand and has a muscular, workmanlike look. I first

reviewed the Mazda BT-50 four years ago when it had been on the New Zealand market only a few months. The vehicle has changed very little in that time, but North Harbour Mazda kindly offered me one for a day recently to re-familiarise myself with the finer details. The model they gave me was the 2WD (rear wheels of course), so this was also a handy opportunity to highlight any differences between that and the 4WD in the original trial. It was time to find out if the BT-50 is still as good as I remember.

Here’s a brief summary of my impressions back then... I clearly recall being impressed on the 4WD’s 60 kilometre drive home. It looked for all the world like a serious but athletic work truck, so you can imagine my surprise when it took to the motorways, suburban streets and country highways like a classy family cruiser. So good was it in fact that I was convinced I would be in for a disappointing experience when I took it down the back of our nine acres to throw it around a bit. It was with some trepidation that I headed down the steep clay track. My doubts were short-lived. Up hill and down dale, including some hairy traversing, the Mazda exhibited superb traction, and control. We had an area which, courtesy of some tractor work during the boggy depths of the previous winter, was deeply rutted nearly to the point where crampons were required to cross it on foot. I took the BT-50 over it and experienced confidence-building stability. I then went back and forth

over it at ever-increasing speeds until I gave up at about 40kmh, with the Mazda victorious and the ruts scoreless. Through all conditions the BT-50 remained level and surefooted. No vehicle that handles the paddocks that well could please me as much on a much longer road trip. So my wife and I packed a few things together, along with my golf clubs and two dogs, and with our two-month old in his capsule safely in the back seat, we pointed the nose in the direction of Whangamata, a 200km trip.

Surprisingly, we arrived fresh and relaxed. Most serious off-road utes reveal a lack of on-road feel. Not so with the Mazda BT-50. Superb power is delivered smoothly to the Michelins (the 2WD boasts Bridgestones) and the vehicle has surprisingly good handling. There was a tiny bit of buck and pitch (which I affectionately refer to as “The Unicycle Effect”) on tight windy roads with a lumpy surface, but this simply goes with the territory in this type of vehicle. Take away the lumpy surface, or put a decent Leaf Slide

heavy load in the tray and the BT-50 behaves car-like when pointed through tight corners, due to its reassuring ability to use the power to transfer traction between front and rear wheels. I didn't take the 2WD offroad but found no perceptible differences, in terms of driving on sealed roads, between it and the original 4WD. The 4WD I tested already had a few kilometres on the clock but the 2WD was brand new, and consequently still a bit stiff. As a result I didn't feel inclined to push it much before it was run in, but it soon became apparent that the vehicle had remained largely unchanged in the four years since testing the 4WD. There are oodles of horses under the bonnet and they particularly make their presence felt at low revs. The BT50’s ability to accelerate from low revs is nothing short of startling – bottom-end torque’s a real feature. I was positively mesmerised by the vehicle's acceleration in 2nd gear – it will shoot from around 5kmh to around 50 kmh in about a second. Motorway overtaking is also effortless. I quickly learned that dropping down to 4th was totally unnecessary. The manual 3-litre diesel turbo delivers more tow than a Roman sandal and is rated to haul a braked load of up to 3000 kg (the auto has a limit of 2500kg). The common-rail diesel delivers a sporty low growl which, when taken in conjunction with the BT-50’s commanding road presence, can’t help but bring a smug grin to the lucky driver’s face. The seats are comfortable, the air-conditioning efficient and the stereo user-friendly and powerful. The interior is well appointed and stylish, with excellent visibility all round. Considering the Mazda BT-50 starts at around $31,390+ORC, it is a must see for all those looking for a vehicle that performs admirably as both a hard working farm utility and a safe and comfortable highway cruiser.

Oddly enough, for a vehicle which compares very favourably with its competitors across all departments, in terms of sales the BT-50 is behind the Hilux, Navara, Ranger (virtually identical), Colorado and Triton in the New Zealand market. I think Kiwis don't naturally associate Mazda with the rough and tumble world of farming and the great outdoors, but given a fair chance the BT-50 should go a long way toward correcting that idea. Even though the 2011 BT-50’s international debut took place late last year at the Sydney International Motor Show we won’t see it on our shores until late this year. So if you’ve been looking for a trusty workhorse that has a car-like, driver appeal and comfort then the BT-50 models currently available are well worth serious consideration – and now would be the time to strike a deal.

Many allergens also thrive in the humidity and are making their presence felt a bit more than usual. Contact allergens in grass are causing rashes and loss of fur about the legs and undercarriages of animals, especially those a bit closer to the ground, such as dogs. The taller than usual grass means simply more contact between grass and animal. Local vet Dr. Patrick Casey reports higher than average incidents of respiratory diseases in horses, probably brought about by airborne allergens.

Flies and their associated maggots are also having a wonderful time in this weather, so vigilance in regard to flystrike is required.

Contact allergens in the grass can cause rashes and loss of fur for many animals.

Dr. Casey also enlightened me regarding facial eczema. Although this is the season when the condition thrives it’s not as bad as usual in Rodney this year and it is thought that the longer-than-usual grass has a diluting effect. In a nutshell, this is how it works; facial eczema is brought about by a spore known as Pithomyces chartarum which, when ingested, proves toxic to the liver and prevents it from breaking down chlorophyll, a vital component of all green growth

While we are currently enjoying the long hot days of summer we need to remember these conditions bring with them seasonal maladies which can cause our stock and pets considerable discomfort. Higher humidity and better than average grass growth have also put problems more in the spotlight this year.

IS GORSE OR SCRUB ERODING YOUR LAND’S PRODUCTIVITY? Before...

For an online video demonstration visit www.allaboutearthmoving.co.nz

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites. Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth

mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

which reacts with sunlight and kicks off the reaction processes common to all plants. Infected animals therefore have chlorophyll coursing through their systems which shouldn't be there and which reacts with sunlight when it reaches the extremities, particularly those parts, such as the face, with no or very little fur. This results in the production of free radicals and the subsequent symptoms typically associated with facial eczema. I've also done a wee bit of research on ryegrass staggers, the cause of which was discovered by New Zealand researchers nearly thirty years ago. This condition typically rears its head around this time of year, although Rodney is not among the areas where it is particularly severe (as in the Waikato, for example). Tiny fungi called endophytes produce mycotoxins which, when ingested, affect the brain's ability to coordinate the muscles. These toxins are at their most potent in warm, dry conditions. The presence of other fungi such as mushrooms and toadstools is also a good early indicator of the likelihood of staggers. The illness is typically found in horses, sheep, cattle, alpacas and some species of deer. The relative simplicity of a horse's digestive system does them no favours in regard to staggers, whilst ruminants have a degree of protection as a result of the partial fermentation of forage prior to digestion. The condition has a cumulative effect, i.e. the more mycotoxins the animal ingests, the more severe the case will be. It should also be pointed out though that vulnerability to the condition can vary greatly between animals.

SOLUTIONS: FLEAS AND ALLERGENS For our pets it's important to remain vigilant in regard to shaking and cleaning animals' bedding and keeping on top of the vacuuming. Despite the likelihood of re-infestation, it remains vital to maintain scheduled flea and tick treatments and don’t be afraid to seek guidance from your local vet. I'd been grazing our big, white saanen goat in the long kikuyu up the fence line for a week or so when I noticed he had a significant number of ticks, including ten of differing sizes on one ear! However, application of an appropriate tick treatment from the vet and moving the goat to shorter pasture saw the ticks off within a few days. For the contact allergens, your vet will prescribe the appropriate treatments. Keeping affected animals away from long grass will also help.

FLYSTRIKE Usually topical treatments work well. Products such as Zapp pour-on, Zenith and Maggo and even fly spray as a short term/emergency measure can be used to kill the maggots.

FACIAL ECZEMA With facial eczema, as with so many illnesses, prevention is better than cure. Many agree, the ingestion of zinc is the best preparation for the facial eczema season. Dropping a 12

from topping pasture, as this promotes fungal growth because it increases dead matter at the pasture base. There is a range of fungicide sprays available on the market but because these sprays are only partially effective, it’s best to regard them also as a complementary strategy. Expect to pay in the region of $15-30 per hectare for the chemical alone. Because the sprays kill the fungus and not the spores, they are best applied before your paddock’s spore count climbs too high. You’ll need to spray every 6-8 weeks, but it is an additional means of protection when you need to ensure the safety of the animals grazing the pasture. Ring around the agricultural spray contractors if you do not have the means to apply one of these fungicides yourself (we have two listed in our directory).

Alpacas can be particularly sensitive to facial eczema.

zinc sulphate bar into the water supply can work, but stock don't find it particularly appetising and will often ignore the treated water source for another if available (although you can add a masking agent). If cattle, sheep and alpacas cannot ingest enough zinc sulphate through drinking, salt licks containing zinc or zinc oxide bullets (called The Time Capsule) are good options. For alpacas the zinc oxide bullets are not effective. Supplementing with commercially made feeds that contain zinc (and has ingredients to mask the taste of the zinc) is probably the most convenient way of getting zinc into these animals. Another complementary strategy in dealing with facial eczema is to treat the environment by reducing the levels of spores in the pasture. During summer it’s best to refrain

For stock already affected, treating with zinc is also helpful but, perhaps more importantly, stock should be removed from infected pasture and kept out of the sun. In severe cases it may be necessary to get stock under cover or shade and to feed them only stored supplementary feeds such as hay and silage. There are various topical treatments on offer at your vet to relieve the symptoms. Monitor pasture and/or faecal spore counts. Testing kits are available from most rural vets (or Google “Agri-feeds SporeWatch”) and many vets will take faecal samples to test for the spore count in order to determine the appropriate management regime for your situation. Be careful to follow the instructions for sampling.

RYEGRASS STAGGERS Animals which have suffered in the past are the ones to keep an eye on and, once again, prevention is better than cure. Low-endophyte grass varieties are now available. It is known that the endophytes are more concentrated in the base of the grass leaf sheath and in the seed heads, so moving stock on before the grass gets too low and getting them through pasture before seed heads form are excellent precautionary measures. If your preventative methods are unsuccessful and some of your animals develop the condition, the best treatment is to remove the toxic source from the diet by moving the stock to unaffected pasture. Most animals will recover within a week or two. In severe cases it may be necessary to stable the animal(s) and feed only stored supplementary feeds. It is important to note that mouldy or smelly feeds can also contain the fungi. Mycotoxin treatments are now available for feeding to infected stock and are likely to hasten recovery. The active ingredients of the treatments bind to the mycotoxin and prevent its passage through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. (It is important to note that there are many other conditions producing symptoms nearly identical to ryegrass staggers, so caution is advised). Prevention, then, is much better than cure. Preventative measures and appropriate pasture management will go a long way towards minimising the suffering of your animals, and therefore that of yourself and your bank balance.

Helen Martin talks to Duncan McNab about managing sheep and cattle through a farming calendar from November to March.

RSP

WHAT’S SIGNIFICANT ABOUT NOVEMBER IN THE SHEEP FARMING CALENDAR? The timeline for managing your sheep is relative to changes in the climate. Because of our mild winters, in the northern region 90% of the fat lambs have gone to the works by the end of November. The main shear, when you shear all the ewes, rams, and lambs on your property, starts in November. This is also a time to do one of two animal stock takes (the other is at docking time, July/August), where you get a tally of all sheep on your property. Then you do a good cull of your ewes and plan for early mating and resultant early lambing. The reason for this is to try and have your fat lambs off in November to limit management issues like fly strike, eczema, shearing costs and the feed required to get flush ewes ready for next season’s tupping.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH EWES NEED CULLING? First of all, you take out the sheep whose teeth are so worn down they won’t be able to compete with the other sheep for food when they have a lamb in their belly. You also cull for lameness or overgrown feet (long toes). Lame sheep can’t walk well, so they can’t compete in getting to the feed.

of grazing where the ewes are put into one big mob and moved from paddock to paddock for pasture management. You can speed up or slow down the rotation based on feed and climate. It’s a good time to chew out pastures of unwanted weeds and give room for vigorous tillering of grass species as, hopefully, the autumn rains arrive. You want the vigorous tillering to build up a bank of feed for the winter. Ewes cycle every seventeen days and rams should be left out for a maximum of 3 cycles. If you’re trying to compact your lambing time, a harness may be used on the rams for the third cycle. (A harness is a leather strap-on halter with a crayon attached to the brisket section so that the ewes are marked during mating).

IS THE PROCESS THE SAME WITH CATTLE? The principles of mating are the same with cattle and so is the culling process, where you cull the cows that are sick or don’t have a calf. They may have bad teeth or a bad udder with a prolapse or a dead quarter or two not producing milk. What... 21 days already and still no bull?

A bad mouth is another reason for culling – a sheep might have teeth that are irregular in length. In older sheep one tooth can grow longer if its gums are bad. Sheep with one teet - we call them one titters – are culled because they can’t feed their lambs properly if they twin. Ewes that are in general ill health – maybe they’ve had eczema or a liver complaint. – are culled when you’re draughting ewes up at the main shear. They either go off to the works or to sale. Some culled ewes may be sold on as one year breeding ewes to a less intensive sheep farming operation. They’ll get a lamb out of them. They’re ideal ewes for small block holders because they’ve already given birth so they’re less susceptible to lambing problems and usually have good mothering ability and experience.

SO YOU’RE LEFT WITH THE EWES YOU WANT TO BREED FROM. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Your mating mob, that is your flushing ewes, should now be put on a higher level of nutrition with increased food intake to increase body weight, as this results in higher fertility. To help synchronise the ewes’ cycling, rams that have been vasectomised (known as ‘teaser rams’) can be put in with the ewes. They bring the ewes on to cycling. Another way of getting around this is to run the rams in paddocks adjacent to the ewes with good stock-proof fences. This is the build up for the rams going out to the ewes around January 10th to 20th. Most farmers now put ewes into a rotational grazing system known as mob stocking. This is a system

But because ewes have a 5 month gestation and cows have 9 months, the bull goes out with the cows in October/November, rather than January/February. A cow’s cycle is 21 days. After weaning in February/March you may do another cull of the cows. It’s important to remember that you have to manage pastures and stock well to make sure you have enough good feed. A lot of farmers use a rotational grazing system where the cattle graze first then the sheep follow.

AND THE END RESULT. ARE LAMBING AND CALVING SATISFYING? I love it. Seeing live lambs and calves feeding off their mother always brings joy to my heart. It really does. Duncan will talk about managing sheep and cattle from April to October in our April issue.
