CONNECT COMMUNITY LIBRARY

6

COURSE: 1B Design Studio (Revised June 2018)

SKILLS: rhino, illustrator, photoshop

This library, located in an emergent immigrant city neighbourhood in Toronto, is a critique on how space can connect people and program to address the social and cultural needs for a community.

Programmatic links are organized along the line of a feature staircase. Due to its organizational structure, the library is compartmentalized so there can be a mediating space for collective human interaction which provides doors into individualized communities such as performance, study, children’s programming. These programmatic links are given flexibility to operate on different schedules and hours depending on community needs. This library aims to be a welcoming centre where everyone can walk along a path to find their space in a foreign place. 7

MEDIATION IN TRANSIT

12

COURSE: 1B Building Construction, CISC Competition Top 10 Finalist

COLLABORATORS: Elizabeth Yeoh

SKILLS: rhino, illustrator, photoshop, maxwell render

Conceived as a threshold into the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory, this project is a response to the site’s urgent need for a public transportation shelter, all the while reflecting the sensibility of the gardens that frame it.

Deviating from the stagnant form associated with this typology, “Mediation in Transit embodies the desire to elevate the mundane quality of a waiting space by setting the structure into apparent motion. This vision is realized through the use of repetitive modular elements whose various forms synthesize with the characteristic inconsistency of nature. As a designated buffer zone between the natural environment and the urbanity beyond, the design intends to break the industrial connotations of steel to create a lively yet, unobtrusive structure that ascends towards the sky. 13

TEMPORARY FOSSILS

COURSE: 2B Design Studio

COLLABORATORS: Leela Keshav, Michelle Li

18

SKILLS: model making, site analysis, data collection

This is an installation that depicts fluvial river processes and their effect on the landscape of the floodplain in Caledonia, Ontario.

It studies the temporary surface conditions created from the deposits left behind from a flood and how those layers accumulate through time to form the top layer of earth that humans stand on. It aims to challenge the notion that human time scales and fluvial time scales are separate, but rather, this project proposes the idea that landscape can be the bridging timescale that creates a historical record which can be experienced by both social and river interactions. 19

UPON SHARED LAND

COURSE: Competition Entry, May 2018

COLLABORATORS: Elizabeth Yeoh

22

SKILLS: rhino, illustrator, photoshop

In response to the question of how architecture can enable its users to have both a sense of belonging and ownership, this proposal seeks to marry the ideas of collective unity and individualism.

The project aspires to foster ties between its inhabitants by placing walkways on each floor, where meaningful interaction may occur. The main promenade is an extension of the landscape, acting as a buffer from the shifting waters and a bridge between the existing communities. This series of active public space creates connections between neighbors and serves as a platform for sharing ideas and skills. A flexible plan with folding doors permits the insertion of individuality. Occupants are provided with places to learn, gather, play, and contribute to Mumbai’s economic growth as consumers and business owners, 23

STUDIO VITALIS

30

COURSE: 1A Design Studio (Revised May 2018)

SKILLS: rhino, v-ray, illustrator, photoshop

This humble studio is a flexible space that is a part of the larger narrative of the cultural renaissance of the Galt downtown core. It aims to expose the truths in the dialectic relationships between the urban landscape and the craftsman. Reveals and barriers work in tandem to craft that dialogue.

It is situated upon load bearing walls that are reminiscent of the robust masonry retaining walls that flank the Grand River creating various framed gardens and intimate micro gallery spaces. A volume is delicately balanced atop to provide space for a skilled craftsman to live and work. This residence provides framed views to the urban landscape as well as allowing onlookers to glimpse the devoted craftsman at work. 31
