HELLO

My name is Rushali Patel and I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I believe what we create is only as important as the people that will experience it. Thus, I am passionate about designing spaces that extend beyond the realm of the individual to create a lasting shared experience for the collective. Thank your for taking the time to review my work and please do not hesitate to contact me!

[WALLED]

1B DESIGN STUDIO In collaboration with Isabella Suppa, Adil Dharshi, Erin Yabesley

The premise of this project was to design a temporary housing complex in Cambridge based on the concept of a folding utility wall. The approach was to take four basic prefabricated units and layer them by shifting volumes across a superimposed grid. The units are modules which are clustered together to form the individual layers. The layers are then stacked to form a complex. The main component of this housing complex is the wall that folds as it organizes interior space and then bursts through the building envelope to form benches, tables, planters, and railings. These units are geared for the low income public that is attracted by the neighbouring Salvation Army building. A service tower of units is placed on the site which is flexible to become what the community needs for example, a bike shelter, a library, employment offices, or a pop-up clinic. The wall succeeds in uniting individuals into a community as it does with the architecture.

MAKER SPACE

1A DESIGN STUDIO

This project aims to celebrate the textile work of a craftsman with a strong focus on interior and exterior views. This maker’s space is placed at the corner of the site onlooking a busy intersection in Cambridge so it may engage as an object of artistic expression with the public. The ribboning sequence of display windows which extends upwards and around the structure engages passers while simultaneously offering panoramic views of the natural landscape from the interior. The placement of windows is used to define spaces on the interior such as an intimate living and work spaces. Through the use of the ribboning effect, the maker’s work becomes as much a part of the architecture as the architecture itself.

MEDIATION IN TRANSIT

1B CISC ENTRY - Top 10 Finalist In collaboration with Elizabeth Yeoh

Conceived as a threshold into the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory, this project is a response to the site’s urgent need for a public transportation shelter, all the while reflecting the sensibility of the gardens that frame it. Deviating from the stagnant form associated with this typology, “Mediation in Transit” embodies the desire to elevate the mundane quality of a waiting space by setting the structure into apparent motion. This vision is realized through the use of repetitive modular elements whose various forms synthesize with the characteristic inconsistency of nature. As a designated buffer zone between the natural environment and the urbanity beyond, the design intends to break the industrial connotations of steel to create a lively yet, unobtrusive structure that ascends towards the sky.

OASIS OF THE NORTH

1B ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN In collaboration with Tracy Meng

The goal of this project was to design an off-grid oasis which is able to provide heat, energy, and water to the inhabitants as they live and work in a remote location. This oasis uses active systems, passive heating techniques, super insulation, heat retaining windows, and a tight building envelope to maintain and oasis-like state within the research station. To further maintain comfort levels, a buffer zone strip is created in the middle to provide a mediation space in between the extreme cold Canadian weather and the interior temperature. The archeology lab and living spaces are separated so that even in isolation, the inhabitants may separate the stress of work and the mundaneness of living from one another. This house proves that you don’t have to sacrifice form over function and you are able to achieve a modern aesthetic as the environmentally conscious aspects are building integrated.

CONNECT COMMUNITY LIBRARY

1B DESIGN STUDIO

Connect Community Library is a project that strives to create a community from within and connect it to the larger centre in which it is situated. This is achieved through two means: a structural wall and a glazed wall. The structural wall organizes the program which is concentrated at the nose of the wall. The glazed wall is the metaphorical town square of the building in which people may gather or circulate. The building is carefully setback 4m from the adjacent Skills for Change Immigrant Help Centre so that the existing community is invited to the library. The library serves its traditional function as well as being a community hub on the ground floor. The library shares its space with a hacker’s lab co-op as well as an assembly hall. Connect community is a project formed from the people to serve the people. 1 Interior Perspective
