“the first second, and the birth of light

the bigbang of design a series of wonders in the architecture realm every architectural output starts from a mere idea to a manifested design. there is a commonality for everyone when starting, these are the clamorous concepts that our minds cannot stop wondering about and desire answers immediately. in the first chapter, an overview of my design outputs and processes will be seen. a little taste of my eureka moments.

7

beginning at the peak

this might sound ironic, but the best challenge happened to me was when i analyzed

the painting of zaha hadid, entitled “ the peak”. a two dimensional representation of her idea - a chaotic, peculiar, abstract presentation yet gives the viewers a curiousity. but there are a lot of things i learned from this painting, i actually find resolution despite its unstability. most people say that ever yone should start from the bottom and climb your way up, but the peak is only the start of my zeal.

“The Peak” by Zaha Hadid

8

design process

the thought process usually is a blend of

deconstructivism and pragmatism, where analysis is an essential part of the process. the extraction of ever y data possible and vital information or observation is the fundamental of ever y reasoning to create the structure.

to fully understand the painting, i started by

fragmenting the key elements of its structure - the axis, the path, the contours, the axis, the bold shadows and the splashes of blue. these characteristics define the totality of the painting as it shows it peculiarity.

from the main picture, i went deep into the

chaotic abyss of the artist, zaha hadid. in this part, i found reasons why hadid interpreted the painting in such way. the understanding of her thought process gave me insights on her vast world of idea and creativity. for example, we find the painting interesting not because its abstract, but despite of its chaotic form, there is a sense of equilibrium on the painting. this equilibrium was hadid’s way to deliver her interpretation of structures.

once all fragments are analyzed, i can correlate

it to a project. the pragmatism of reality and the deconstruction of ideas are applied hand in hand to produce the final output i need. but in most deconstructed architecture, where there are wild forms and shapes, i usually tone down it in minimalist approach. the bigger picture should fit in a defined and minimized forms. the understanding i gained from the deconsruction is what makes the labyrinth of thoughts find its way to extract answers.

the project becomes free when

it turns back into the vernacularity of architecture. alpas can be summarized by a state ment by francisco manosa, which says:

“Philippine architecture is an attempt to capture the filipino psyche. therefore the filipino architect must be aware of the forms, spaces, symbols, and materials

the unit is a straightforward interpretation

of simplicity. linear visual connections and smooth surfaces are throughout the spaces but the tiny details of furniture are scattered to add excitement to the area.

hangout = home can we make public spaces feel like home?

in addressing challenges for public spaces, such as climate, landsacpe, vistas and other external factors, the proposed project is a product of various investigations and observations gathered in order to cater the needs of ever y individual. located on plaza mayor in university of santo tomas, we examined what are the necessities for the hangout place to feel like home. a space where people can rest, do active and passive past-time while being protected by the tambayan .

considering the site is located in a plaza,

the hangout place tries to bridge people together based on their activities. from being bleachers and seating when there is an event going in the plaza or just a nook for reading. the goal is to make people comfortable enough to use the space, to be homy and cozy as much as possible. in connection with this, the modules are proposed to have different functions - storage, planter and even a tool for good air circulation.

the meteorites of ideas a presentation of materialized models tangible representations of concepts make an in depth interaction between the observer and the idea. models do not lie in its form and connects to the designer with just a glance. the materialization of schemes concretizes the assumptions of the designer and an important tool to communicate in terms of scale.
