About

As a more mature student I discovered Landscape Architecture from the Horticulture and Residential Garden Design Industry. After a few years of work experience, I received a B.L.A from the University of Oregon. My horizons have expanded with international and domestic travel combined with education ultimately leaving me with a well-rounded and diverse project archive. Here is a concise composition of my past and present work including freelance design and education. Enjoy

The Vitalization of The Red Bluff River Park SOUTH END PARK

Location: Red Bluff, California

Site: Red Bluff River Park

MAIN ST

Type: Park Master-Plan Concept MAIN ENTRY

My life long personal relationship with The Red Bluff River Park is one of the reasons I chose it to be my Senior comprehensive project. The current state of the park is in major need of attention. This once popular destination is now taken over by drug dealers, crime, a dying landscape and a program which is not suitable for todays users and climate. The Key goals were to design a master plan for the park that would bring people back to the existing un-used park. The decisions for the design were intended to create opportunities for local people of the city and the surrounding counties to utilize the Park while offering a design language, which created a sense of cohesion throughout the park.

The Active Play Area begins with a Spray & Play welcoming visitors at the entry way of the childrens playground. The playground offers multiple play areas for children to choose from. Adults can use the outdoor gym which is located next to the play areas.

A plaza surrounded by multiple entertainment options will provide visitors several different reasons to travel to the park. A river front Restaurant, Paddleboat rentals and a large performance stage will draw large numbers of people.

To maximize the use of all areas in the park and create new opportunities for visitors, the large space at the very north end of the park is the perfect place to put a large covered picnic area. The covered area is big enough to accommodate large crowds and because it is covered it could be used on both rainy and hot summer days. The large grass area could also be utilized by activities that are part of each event, or a place children can play while adults shop and socialize with the community. This is one more idea that could draw people in Red Bluff to stay and people from surrounding counties come to.

Throughout history, studies have shown that city parks increase social connection, health and aid the environment to create a positive impact on local economy. The intention of this park master plan is intended to offer the city of Red Bluff “my home town a vision for future opportunities to help revitalize the city.

Location: Kyoto, Japan Site: Fushimi Ward, Kyoto Type: Landevelopment Concept Master-Plan This six week Studio group project focused on re-developing an illegal dumping area in Kyoto, Japan. Our groups mission was to create a community which included, housing, shopping, eating and Education. The design was inspired by all the gardens we were able to tour and learn about during our six week program in Kyoto. The contributing group members included Britany Murphy, Giselle Shereen, Caroline Walsh and myself. My contribution to the group involved collaborative design input on the master plan, handrendering all the drawings and help with the water coloring.

Spring 2017 Studio / University of Oregon

Site: ST Peters Church Location: Portland, Oregon Type: Affordable Housing Community Masterplan The St. Peters Church project was the Spring 2017 studio. The studio introduced a collaborative approach to a design solution that utilized both Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Our project goals were to create affordable housing mixed with commercial, a multicultural center, community garden, playground and a multi-use parking lot design with storm water infrastructure. Ultimately completing the term with a greater understanding on the relationship between Architecture and Landscape Architecture through a team approach. My contribution included collaboration on the overall design of both the landscape and the interior layouts of the apartments. We worked very closely on every aspect of the project and the three of us had a say in every final decision.

Site: SW Barbour Blvd. Location: Portland, Oregon Type: Park Master-Plan The Barbour Blvd. Transit system studio was intended to focus on areas alongside Barbour Blvd. to be redesigned. The purpose of the design was to create a water detention pond combined with an accessible park which was adjacent to the new transit line on SW Barbour Blvd. Working with limited space, the design decisions where intended to serve multiple purposes like managing and filtering storm water run-off from the busy street and releasing it into the Tryon Creek. Ultimately utilizing the space which connects the site allowing people to interact with storm-water systems while still having a healthy separation between people and systems.

The client asked for a space to entertain, area for children and dogs and a secluded spot to relax. The existing topography was on a slope, so I designed terraces to separate each area and celebrate the natural topography. The design included plant suggestions and overall design. COVERED PERGOLA

Clean Machine

Mobile environmentally friendly showers & laundry for the homeless Currently the only public showers for those experiencing homlessness in Eugene are at the St. Vincent Depaul Service Station on Highway 99, or at the Eugene Mission. The mobility of the Clean Machine, allows people to be reached where they are at.

Maximizing existing resources inspires the design of the Clean Machine. Beginning with the re-use of a retrofitted Lane Transit District Bus. The bus will be retrofitted with environmentally friendly and sustainable elements. A greywater system will recycle water from shower facilities into the washing machines and toilets. The interior is equipped with one ADA shower and one standard size shower, each shower room includes a sink with a mirror and a toilet. Because we value the importance of hygiene the bus will also offer laundry service, reassuring each person will leave clean from head to toe. There will be two of each washer and dryer units. The washer unit will be equipped with "Agua Fresco", an innovative filter under development by a graduate student group at MIT, to recirculate shower water so it can be repurposed as laundry water. Two propane tanks installed within the bus will heat the water, and excess heat energy will be derived from PV solar panels on the roof of the bus. The bus is powered using Bio-diesel fuel which is an alternative fuel produced from renewable resources. The bus's water resources would be supplied by designated fire hydrant sites, using a water pressure regulator and hose. Two grey water tanks collecting run-off will be pumped into the local sewage system and black water will be treated and disposed of a at a local sewage facility. The mobility of The Clean Machine, allows people to be reached wherever they are.

Designed by: Derek Rayle, Emily Farthing, Russell Martinelli, and Whitney Holt

The competition called for a design solution which would help solve some of the issues facing the large population of homeless people in Eugene. As a group, we all agreed that meeting the basic needs, that we take for granted were showering and clean clothes. This bus could travel to homeless communities offering them a chance to shower and wash their clothes. The design requirements had to be sustainable. We had a team of four students including Derek Rayle, Whitney Holt, Emily Farthing and myself. We all collaborated with the overall design and idea of the project.
