A novel, pesticide-free method of managing mirid pests

What is Lybolty?

Lybolty® is used as part of a novel ‘push-pull’ system for precision monitoring of Lygus bugs.

Lybolty® is formulated in tablets, to give a slow release of the active ingredient over a two-month period.

Mode of Action

Lybolty® contains a safe, naturally occurring scent that is released in minute quantities and deters Lygus adults and nymphs from entering the crop, whilst pushing them towards traps and pheromones in order to increase the trap catch.

Target Pests

Why use Lybolty®?

Mirid bugs feed on a wide range of crops, including strawberry, raspberry, sugar beet and cucumber. Nymphs and adults have piercing mouthparts and suck sap from leaves and fruits causing distorted growth and making the fruit unmarketable. Very low numbers of bugs can cause economic damage with one insect in 40 plants damaging in UK strawberry. Key insecticide products that have been used to control these pests are no longer available in the UK and European Union. Lybolty provides growers with a viable, pesticide-free alternative to help manage these pests.

How to use Lybolty®

The push-pull system should be deployed preventatively as soon as the first adult capsids are expected or seen in the crop, and is used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) programme.

HOW MANY?

Lybolty bags are placed throughout the crop in a grid pattern at 400 per hectare (5 m spacing), and replaced after 8-12 weeks, if required.

WHERE TO PUT THEM

In strawberry attach the bags in the canopy. In raspberry hang the bags in the shade just below the growing tip.

Benefits of Lybolty®

WHERE DO THE TRAPS AND PHEROMONE LURES GO?

Traps and pheromones are placed 10-20 m apart around the edge of the crop, using green vane traps for Lygus rugulipennis and blue sticky traps (Impact traps, Russell IPM) for Lygocoris pabulinus.

• Early detection and precision monitoring of Lygus rugulipennis, Lygocoris pabulinus and Liocoris tripustulatus

• Delays the build-up of target pests

• Reduces fruit damage by 15 – 85% (conventional vs organic)

• Proven to be effective in polytunnel-grown strawberry and cane fruit crops (raspberry, blackberry)

• Compatible with biological and chemical control methods

• Pesticide and residue-free fruit

• Easy to apply and use
