FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the first edition of Russell Trusso Life/Style magazine! My Italian family, though middle class, had an affinity for the best things in life. The holidays were made special by bringing out an heirloom tablecloth. Celebrations were topped with “the good glasses,” and fresh pasta sauce flowed from Rose’s kitchen to mark every one of our rites of passage. My parents taught me that it is not money that makes you happy, it’s the fabulous life that you create for yourself and the people you invite into your life. I am excited to share so many things that I have lived, loved and experienced with you. My goal is to help you celebrate yourself, your home, and your loved ones by sharing the things I find special. I will share treasured recipes from my Mom, aunts, friends, and I will include some of my own favorite kitchen delights. You will see remarkable table settings that range from familiar and traditional to new and opulent. I will introduce you to dear friends who are renowned antique dealers and collectors. You’ll love hearing their tips and trends for both the veteran and new collector. You’ll raise a glass as you join us for special parties - from grand galas to barn parties to intimate suppers. America’s best creative floral designers will show us how to redefine spaces with color, texture and their own brand of magic. We will take you to cherished weddings, transform the ordinary into magical items, put those extra flourishes to create memorable details, and of course, spotlight trends in jewelry. Enjoy this issue of Russell Trusso Life/Styles on your computer, or download it to your eReader. Each article is linked back to their authors so you can easily reach out to each of these professionals. Because this magazine is in a digital format, I encourage you to share it with your friends (or have them sign up for their own free subscription at www.russelltrusso.com). Feel free to drop me a line with your feedback. I’m eager to hear from you. Happy Holidays, Russell

Always Look Up!

Event Designer, Heather Thomas, mixes color, light, whimsy and elegance that have party goers looking to the heavens. by Heather Thomas, HeatherLily.com As an event designer I'm always looking up to see where my potential rigging points are, and if we can't find them, we build them. Believe me when I tell you that I love suspending anything and everything: vintage umbrellas, mirrored glass globes, chairs, frames, chandeliers, bird cages, lanterns, crystal garland... you get the picture. When I first look at a space I take into account the atmosphere that the client wants to create and then I go from there. Most of the time we have to disguise and camouflage existing structures to create this environment, but we love the challenge. One of our most dramatic changes was a Sushi Rock restaurant transformed into an over the top Breakfast at Tiffany's birthday soiree -- you couldn't imagine two entirely different styles in the same location. Lighting is the key to any room transformation, as it dramatically increases the visual impact and it adds a new dimension to the space. While a collection of mirrored glass spheres is stunning, it becomes so much more interesting when illuminated because the spheres reflect the energy back into the space. The same can be said for a curtain of crystal garlands or candlelit globes -- the crystal prisms catch and throw the light like you wouldn't believe,

and the candlelit globes create a flickering illumination which creates instant ambiance. Â The moral of this story is exercise your mind and think outside of the box. Â Look up and imagine the possibilities of what it could be. Â And if you're having a hard time, then give us a call! HeatherLily is a boutique event and floral design company that specializes in chic floral arrangements and decor for weddings and social soirees. We are as passionate about the creative collaboration process with our clients as we are about designing events in their entirety. Our spectrum of services include the essential event design variables from the very beginning stages, starting with your floral needs. Our in-house accessories such as accent lighting, fabric enhancement, prop design and custom stationery accents, ultimately work together in tandem to create a cohesive design. We specialize in event design conception to fruition and everything in between. Reach Heather hthomas@heatherlily.com at or visit her website at http://heatherlily.com/

The tablescape (above) is a feast for the eyes with full centerpieces featuring yellow florals, pheasant feathers, sage, and tall glass stanchions boasting boasting trios of pillar candles which together with Hurricanes lined with skeletal leaves create a warm glow. Wild raspberry vines become playful and Ăźber earth friendly chargers over the natural linen tablecloth, while custom cowboy hats mark the bride and grooms places. At the ceiling you’ll see a peek of the foraged tree trunk chandeliers hung by wired rustic rope and accented with fresh vines and electronic LED pillar candles.Â

Tenting a space can be an elegant and intimate addition to an event. Draping the support poles and anchors in coordinating fabric will hide unsightly necessities. Vintage dotted Swiss fabric is a designers best friend.

Let the beauty of what you love – be what you do by Kathleen Sleigh BEAUTY. If I could pick one word that describes what I long for, what I strive for and what moves me – it would be BEAUTY. When I say Beauty, I mean more than “hair and makeup”. I mean Beauty as an elemental force of what is good. It’s a pretty heavy thought – but I really believe it. Beauty has the power to transform, restore, nourish and bring immense joy. I’m learning that Beauty is not always found in the perfect and the flawless. It’s the imperfections, the patina, the nicks and the worn surfaces that are often more beautiful and inviting. I’ve found this to be true about decorating and about people. Beauty is what ever is true – real and raw, refined and rare. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been most in my “flow” when I’m experiencing or creating beauty. Many of the ways I express beauty in my life are connected to the domestic arts. I’m in my element cooking a delicious meal, setting a gorgeous table, arranging the flowers, setting the mood with music and light and decorating the rooms in which to do all this feasting and living.

At heart I am a hostess. As an interior designer, this spirit of gathering and celebration, along with my passion for all things beautiful, is always present as I approach designing a home. I envision the way it will be used whether for an intimate gathering of close friends around the hearth, a quiet conversation with a partner at the end of a long day, a Super Bowl bash or special birthday celebration around the dining room table. It must be inviting, warm, relaxed and beautiful. I want everyone to linger…. Since launching my firm, Kathleen Sleigh Design, in 2009, I have collaborated with several Chicago area families on projects ranging from new home construction and renovations, kitchen and bath remodeling to interior decoration. I garner inspiration from multiple sources – nature, fashion, art and travel – but the most important inspiration is my clients. The things with which we choose to surround ourselves reveals what matters to us, what feeds our souls and reminds us of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Our homes should be beautiful, comfortable and deeply personal; always responding to the way we want to live and share our lives with those we love. My own design aesthetic is based in classicism with a considered mix of modern and unexpected elements to bring integrity and personality to a space. I recently installed a 1960’s Palm Beach Modern mirror over a 19thC French walnut commode to keep things fresh in my client’s foyer. Mixing antique with modern, the organic with the polished and the traditional with the bohemian imparts a timeless feel and an easy vibe to a room. I’m excited to share my point of view and my passion for all

things beautiful with you in the coming issues of Russell Trusso Lifestyle. I’ll reflect on my own design work, curate some thoughts and images to inspire, share some great finds and occasionally feature artists and purveyors of all things beautiful. I hope your sense of beauty will be inspired this holiday season and in the new year to come. Enjoy! Since launching my firm, Kathleen Sleigh Design LLC in 2009, I have collaborated with several North Shore families on projects ranging from interior decoration to home renovations and kitchen and bathroom remodeling. For each project I garner inspiration from multiple sources, the most important one being my clients. Every house has character and every person has a vision for a home that responds to the way they want to live and raise their families. I consider listening to be my primary tool when formulating a design plan. I want to know my clients well so that the result of our collaboration is a home reflecting the soul and personality of its owners.

Ultra Glam 21st Birthday Party Nightclub VIP Style by Heather Thomas, HeatherLily.com I'm so fortunate to be able to earn a living by making my clients' dreams and visions come to fruition through my creations, and sometimes I'm rewarded the extra opportunity to live vicariously through these events. This such event proved true -- an ultra glamorous 21st birthday party. I'm quickly reminded of the day when I turned 21, my party (or lack there of) was a far cry from an outlandish soirĂŠe requiring it's own budget and designer. My, how times have changed -- which is where I come in (talk about going full circle). I knew this was going to be a fabulous event when the client told me that she had an alter ego named 'Ari' that came out while dancing in the clubs, much like Beyonce's 'Sasha Fierce'. I absolutely love it when clients share the smallest bit of information with me and it triggers a transformation of creative images in my head. Arielle had a simple request: transform a Sushi Rock restaurant into a VIP club experience for her guests. OK, done!

It started with the idea of marrying a Breakfast in Tiffany's color scheme with a sexy night club environment. This could not have been achieved without a heavy focus on accent lighting. We surrounded the area with suspended white fabric panels from the ceiling which created a perfect canvas for the washes of tiffany blue accent lighting, while also masking the enormous sushi bar in the middle of the restaurant. The tiffany blue lighting complimented the twelve crystal chandeliers that were suspended over the dance area, as well as the Gobo pattern light that was washed over the floor. All existing removable furniture was replaced with additional club style seating and decor. Instead of placing flower arrangements throughout, we focused on a half dozen large statement pieces peppered within the restaurant area. One side of the restaurant was accented with enormous urns filled with hydrangeas, roses, and orchid garlands, while the other side featured various sized black cylinder vases filled with orchids, calla lilies, peonies and hydrangeas, all dripping with garlands of hand-strung dendrobium orchids. The icing on the cake was the entrance statement piece: three foot tall letters spelling 'ARI' covered entirely with over 1,500 roses illuminated by spotlights. As far as the timeline went, Arielle opted for a private dinner for her family prior to the club opening. We pushed the restaurants' tables together to create two long rectangular tables in the private dining room. The middle of the table was landscaped with a continuous arrangement of hydrangea, roses, and vanda orchids as far as the eye could see. In true club fashion the doors opened at 10:00 pm, complete with reserve private VIP booths and bottle service. Entertainment was very important to Arielle, and DJ Bandcamp proved his worth spinning tunes while two live performances kept the energetic vibe continuing. The guests went crazy for it, and we managed to impress not only our client but several NFL and NBA players that where in the house that night. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience both for myself and our client -- one that we'll never forget!

Creating A Temporary Environment one must tap into their inner Texan and say “go big or go home”

by Heather Thomas, HeatherLilly.com When you're an event designer and your client's wedding is at the historic Old Courthouse in downtown Cleveland, one must tap into their inner Texan and say “go big or go home.” This translates into bringing in absolutely anything and everything needed to set the

tone -- from the smaller details like flatware and pintuck linens to the larger scale accents of furniture and lighting -- the decor must tell a unifying and cohesive story. The story we're telling evokes an intimate and romantic ambiance masquerading in a seemingly enormous space with a larger-thanlife scale. True, while the Old Courthouse is indeed an incredible architectural masterpiece, it's also an event designer's greatest challenge. How do you transform an incredibly vast space into a romantic setting in a venue that prohibits candlelight? After an in depth consultation with

the client, we decided to go against “the norm” -- which is when the fun truly began! First and foremost we started with lighting, the key to any great visual experience. Bathing the room in crystal white light and highlighting the large, marble columns brought out the natural blush tones in the stone, which was a perfect compliment to the pink O'hara and Faith garden roses. While lower height centerpieces wouldn't make much of an impact, a sea of tall centerpieces with 500 stems of flowers seemed to make a

21

dent -- and that's exactly what we did. The countless umbrellas of hydrangeas, garden roses, calla lilies, etc. that rose up from the center of each table provided a quasi-shelter for guests, introducing a much needed human scale component to a seemingly infinite and grand space, marrying the best of both worlds. Suspended garlands of hand strung crystal prisms (which caught the light beautifully, might I add) paired with silver mercury candleholders illuminated by flickering LED lights and glass beaded chargers reinforced the romance and intimacy of the space. After all, it is all in the details, and you don't need Texan credentials to pull off a truly breathtaking transformation. Denise Macey, my favorite Chicago area designer, works her magic in this dining room. I love the mismatched chairs and the drama of the painting in the background. This room actually sits just a step up from her living room tucked under a low ceiling There is no chandelier - but it works!

DRAMA: THE DINING ROOM ...no one wants to completely forgo the pleasure of dinning in a beautifully appointed room.

by Kathleen Sleigh I love a beautiful dining room. There was an idea floating around in the design world a few years ago that the dining room was dead. Too formal and stiff – the dining room was suddenly deemed a relic of the past going the way of glass milk bottles, ashtrays and rotary phones. Casual dining in our kitchens and great rooms was supposedly how we wanted to entertain and newly built homes were eliminating the dining room entirely.

29

Saladino at his minimalist best. Fireplace, round table, upholstered chairs with an antique mirror. Unexpected elements like the unusually striking chandelier which looks amazingly modern. The white painted floors and the upholstered walls also bring a contemporary vibe to this otherwise traditional room. I don’t think this trend really ever had any legs. It was the equivalent of declaring that evening gowns were dead because women preferred to run around in jeans most of the time. Just flip through any shelter magazine and you’ll see dining rooms all over the place! It turns out that no one wants to completely forgo the pleasure of dinning in a beautifully appointed room. The dining room is probably my favorite room to decorate because it’s a chance to be a set designer for home theater. Any occasion in the dining room is like a little piece of theater. The guests around the table are the characters and we set the stage with furniture, lighting, mirrors and drapes. My ideal dining room has the following elements: Large windows or French doors, a round table, upholstered chairs, a stunning chandelier, at least one large antique mirror, a fireplace and if the room calls for it – a painted wallpaper from de Gourney or Gracie. When I set my table I always use my Astier de Villatte dishes and my Riedel crystal stemware. The flowers, candle holders and linens will vary – but the overall mix is a combination of rustic and polished with natural greenery and flowers. I love mixing old wooden pieces with the sparkle of silver and clay pots with crystal. Here are some images of my favorite dining rooms that capture some or all of the elements that make this room the most beautiful, dramatic and inviting room in our homes.

This is the master, Saladino, at his best. Â At once ethereal and cozy. Â Round table, upholstered chairs, antique mirror, fireplace, and lots of silver and old pottery.

31

Vincete Wolf surprisingly using a matched set of chairs in this handsomely striking room. Love the mix of Alison Berger pendent lighting instead of a chandelier. Very clever to echo the pendants with the candlesticks marching down the table. The huge wall of mirror must sparkle with the reflection of lights at night!

Kathleen Sleigh Design~This was a successful result of using and repurposing many elements from my client's dining room. She wanted to keep the wallpaper, the chairs the chandelier, the table and the French commode. I finally used a gorgeous silk Nancy Corzine fabric I'd long admired for the window treatments. The sconces are new from Chameleon Fine Lighting; the sisal rug from Stark Carpet strikes an informal and fresh note in the room. The chairs were recovered in a Rose Tarlow velvet. Fun find were the mid-century brass bird lamps, which add a whimsical unexpected element to the room.

Kathleen Sleigh Design. Love this dining room in my former home. I found the chandelier at Tara Antiques in St John's Wood when I lived in London. I fell in love with the large un-cut tear drop crystals. The French gilt mirror between the windows was the perfect size. The old french table has three leaves and extends to 14'! The Rose Tarlow chairs are incredibly comfortable and covered in Randolph and Hein linen velvet. The French doors lead out to the front porch and they are flanked by dark brown Rose Tarlow silk curtains. Transparent finely woven Conrad shades are on the windows. This room has such a warm and generous feel about it with the large table and comfortable chairs. No one was ever in a rush to get up!

Since launching my firm, Kathleen Sleigh Design LLC in 2009, I have collaborated with several North Shore families on projects ranging from interior decoration to home renovations and kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Living the Jetson Life Cleveland boutique owners showcase the timelessness of mid-century modern furniture by Jennifer E Watters Photos by Dwight Kaczmarek Credit: Kevin G Reeves In the early 1950s, Americans were introduced to a new kind of design. A design style borrowed from Scandinavian influence with some futuristic influence to transition from the post-traditional period of post World War II. Today, we refer to this retro design style as midcentury modern. In Cleveland, Ohio the resurgence of the mid-century modern movement can be seen in the up and coming Tremont neighborhood, where new condos are being constructed with the sharp lines, large windows and open floor plans that create easy movement within the space. Next door are century old arts and crafts style and neoclassical designed churches and shops.

The beauty of mid-century modern is its timelessness. The design period began in Europe in the early 1930s, transitioning to the United States after World War II ended. Its influence was felt from Hollywood to the nightclubs of New York City, ending around the mid-1960s. Clean lines and futuristic, minimalist design was the idea that introduced the world to the movement that would become mid-century modern. This now antique style has become a new trend among the hipsters and the design-conscience young professionals in the large urban areas of the United States. Bella Capelli Sanctuario Beauty from the top down Russell Trusso Lifestyle caught up with Sandy Borrelli and Serina Peck as they returned from Aveda Congress, the largest Aveda lifestyle conference in America. Sandy and Serina are coowners of Bella Capelli Sanctuario in Westlake, Ohio. They have just completed their 16th year of successful salon and spa ownership. RTL inquires, What’s your story? RTL: How long have you known each other? S and S: We met in 1992, when we worked side by

side in a local salon. In 1997, five years later, we decided to open Bella Capelli Salon. RTL: Where did the name Bella Capelli Sanctuario come from? S and S: “My Italian immigrant grandfather used to call me Bella as a child and I thought that was my name in Italian,” said Borrelli. “Of course it was not. Bella Capelli means Beautiful Hair in Italian. Sanctuario is a quasiItalian word to reflect sanctuary or peace.” RTL: Quasi-Italian? S and S: When we

37

opened Bella Capelli Salon in 1997, we were the only Bella Capelli salon in the country. After five years, they were sprouting up all over America. When we decided to go spa, we moved into the 4,800square-foot space one mile down the street. We decided to change the name and add Sanctuario (sanctuary). “No one would copy a made-up word,” said Borrelli. RTL: Why Aveda? S and S: Aveda was the first hair care product manufacturer to have social and environmental accountability. Aveda is committed to providing organic plant-derived products that are not only gentle and safe for the body, but safe for the

environment. This was the perfect partnership for Bella. RTL: What is your favorite Aveda Product? S and S: Both agree...Beautifying Oil. It is the one product you could survive with on a desert island,” says Borrelli. RTL: What holiday advice do you have for RTL’s readers? S and S: Give the gift of wellness and relaxation. A visit to “the sanctuary” Is always a holiday favorite. From the luxurious “dream come true package” to a relaxing pedi-mani. It is the gift that is always welcomed and never re-gifted. RTL: How do the readers place their holiday orders?

“The secret is there is no secret,” states Serina. “We are a mission-driven company, focusing on superlative customer service, a passion for cutting-edge education, resulting in exceptional beauty in a relaxing, environmentally conscious culture. At Bella, we cultivate a lifelong relationship with our vendors, employees’ and guests.”

PEARLS How to Care for Your Jewelry When you ask people to name a list of gems, they immediately think of diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Pearls are always left off of that list, but pearls are also gems. Just like any other gem, pearls can be graded as gem by quality (e.g. the finest, flawless and most beautiful). Pearls, like other gems, are created by an act of nature. Natural or "oriental" pearls as they are sometimes called, are created when a naturally occurring "foreign body" such as a small sea creature, sand, glass or other foreign body is introduced into the oyster. The oyster responds to this intruder by isolating the foreign body with nacre, that beautiful opalescent coating we know as the outside of the pearl. Over time the layers of coatings become thicker until a pearl is formed. 47

Since the early 1900's, man has placed artificial foreign bodies, called “nuclei”, inside of oysters. The pearl reacts the same way by laying down layers of beautiful nacre. Because the nuclei are round, the resulting pearl is round rather than a free form in shape created by natural pearls. Pearls, natures gems, are indeed very special. The nacre can have great luster or “shine" or it can be dull. The richer and thicker the nacre, the more luster and opalescent to the skin of the pearl. Because pearls are created by a living organism, the colors can range from white to black and virtually every color in between, even purple, pink, blue and green. The common sense guidelines for the care of pearls is rather simple. You should always store pearls away from other jewelry so that stones that are in clasps and pendants do not scratch the coating of the pearls. A soft cloth will go far in protecting your pearls. You can simply roll them in a piece of cotton and lay them in a drawer. Moisture in the air is good

for the nacre, so a sealed container is neither necessary nor good for pearl care. Pearls are commonly strung on silk cording so you should note any fraying or gaps between pearls that sometimes occur with frequent use. This is easily remedied by having your pearls restrung.

Always apply lotions and perfumes before you put on your pearls. If possible, put the perfume on where the pearls will not touch the scented areas of your body. The chemicals that create the fragrance can damage the nacre of the pearl coating. Sometimes pearls need a bath. Plain water (or water

holiday pet tip:

with a touch of baking soda) is good since it neutralizes acids from the skin. Always lay your pearls on a clean cloth and allow them to dry before storing. Loving care of your pearls will give you years of wear, make them treasured heirlooms, and be the catalyst for millions of compliments!

It's not just dogs that eat the ribbons left from gift wrapping. Cats, some birds and pet rodents will often chew or eat ribbons. Be certain to clean up the discards as soon as you are done unwrapping your gifts. If your pet does eat a ribbon, never pull the ribbon out of your pet’s butt - have your vet do it. The ribbon could be tangled in the intestines, causing internal damage to your beloved pet.

Winter 2013 Earring Collection What’s hot in jewelry this winter? by Russell Trusso Thanksgiving kicks off the Holiday Season – have you started wondering what to wear to that special work party? How about that special soiree with friends? What jewelry you’ll be

wearing when the New Year’s ball touches down? To start the season, think Fall colors. I love the look of a cluster earring in rich hues; the rich orange of carnelian, the yellow hues of citrine, and captivating shimmer of yellow gold. The cluster earring is appropriate for a Thanksgiving dinner, open house or cocktail party. Looking for something more sophisticated? Try chalcedony. The blue shades are great on all skin tones, but really bring out lighter eyes. Need more drama? Find sapphires in purples, blues or lavender and punch them up with diamonds – that makes an amazing statement everyone will notice. Or, for a classic elegance, my pearl jewelry, studded with diamonds, is always a true winner. Accessorizing your transition into evening dressing can become a real challenge. Here are some tips to make it easier.

Citrine, carnelian, diamond sapphire, and golden pearl. Perfect for cocktails or any bountiful feast.

Chalcedony blue, perfect for a formal cocktail party or just out with “the girls” during the holidays.

A dramatic chandelier earring can take you from an elegant luncheon to an evening celebration. My offering for this category is an earring created with branches of 18k gold coral accented with diamonds, sapphires and cultured pearls embedded with diamonds.

If you’re wearing purple velvet or satin, pair that special dress with these dramatic earrings of amethyst, tourmalines, sapphires and diamonds, finished off with a lavender baroque pearl drop. If you’re more apt to go with a simple black dress, you can use bold flashes of colors in your accessories. Your black dress would be the perfect backdrop for these earrings - slices of two tone green and fuchsia tourmaline, accented with sapphires and finished with a large natural fuchsia tourmaline. Engraved burned amber has the jewelry world buzzing this season. I’ve taken this rare gem, carved into intricate swirl baroque patterns, and creating an earring that is reminiscent of very grand times. I am very proud of my Winter collection. Silver Spoons to Silver Linings by Ron Greenwald Greenwald Antiques The beauty of silver has captivated people for millennia. The ancient Romans left us many silver table services from their famous dinner parties, Persia has left us its beautiful hollowware that almost seems modern in design, and the Inca impressed the conquistadors with rooms filled with silver. Europeans and Americans have also used silver, but it wasn’t until the 19th century when more silver mines were discovered that more and

more people began to grace their tables with silver. The clean lines of late Georgian styles were popular until around 1850. The exuberance of the Victorian and Art Nouveau styles were popular from 1850 -1900. In the Twenties and Thirties, people began seeking out clean lines again via the Art Deco style. In the Forties, modernized versions of Victorian styles were in vogue. Midcentury Modern styles characterize the Postwar period of the Fifties and Sixties with their even cleaner and sleeker shapes.

As the holidays approach, many of our thoughts turn to entertaining, whether with cocktail parties for a crowd, intimate meals with visiting friends and family, or large holiday dinners. This is also the time when we may look in our cupboards and find that great-grandma’s set of silver flatware for eight won’t cut it for the twelve people we’ve invited to dinner, or when we realize that there actually is a use for all those extra serving pieces. Perhaps you’ve never entertained before and you’re looking for an exciting vintage or antique set of sterling flatware or

dinnerware to start your collection, or perhaps you are looking to add to what you already have. Greenwald Antiques has exactly what you need. And let’s face it, even though most of us don’t have help anymore, polishing silver really is really no big deal; store it in a tarnish resistant chest or wraps and you just have to give it a quick wipe once a year, if that. Or better yet, use it every day, and you’ll never need to polish it again. Stainless steel flatware can never compare to the look and feel of real silver. Since 1959 we have carried many different

sets of sterling silver Flatware. We also offer a Pattern Matching Service if you need to add pieces to an existing set. Perhaps you want an even bigger wow factor for your table or buffet. Entrée Dishes, Candelabra, Platters, Trays, Chargers, and Centerpieces certainly deliver. A Tea and Coffee Service with dessert is never out of place, and don’t forget extra teaspoons. Perhaps you even want a set of Sterling Dessert Bowls or Plates. Whatever your style or budget, we are happy to

accommodate you at Greenwald Antiques. Contact us at info@greenwaldantiques.com or visit us at either of our two locations. The Trusso Holiday Table The details matter in this gorgeous, but remarkably simple table. My traditional Christmas Eve table always centers around a table cloth that has been handed down to me from my Mother. This year, I am proudly displaying a heavy, golden damask cloth with a woven satin border with matching napkins. I love large napkins and most of these vintage tablecloths were paired with huge harmonizing napkins; a luxurious addition at a table. Christmas is a season that is forgiving with the overuse of using the color gold. The wise men brought it as a gift, and we reflect that present in abundance at the holiday. The large art deco screen (seen in the

background) comes from the famed ocean liner, “The Ille de France”, and it sets the perfect backdrop for the guest at the head of the table. My love of orchids is reflected in a vintage set of silver from the 1920’s named “Orchid”. It has a very streamlined shape with waves of silver depicting the orchid petals. I love chargers, so I placed each over sized cut crystal art deco entree platters on a gold charger. I finished the look with a napkin rings with a beaded butterfly or a gold dragonfly. Some years ago, a wonderful lady in Cleveland gave me a fabulous set of hand blown Steuben stemware from the 30’s as a thank-you gift. Each glass has delicate spun golden ribbons around the glass. Those treasured glasses are always on my Holiday table. Whenever I look at the way those stunning glasses capture the Christmas Eve candlelight, I am reminded of our dear friendship.

Anyone who remotely knows me will tell you my love for flowers is without boundaries. This year I used full blown open red roses and “white to green” shaded hydrangeas.(See the adjacent pages for how I opened the roses.) At a flea market in Paris a decade ago, I found these remarkable branches of trumpet lilies and Himalayan poppies in gold and bronze. I love sneaking them in under the real flowers. On this table I’ve added a collection of hand-blown crystal lilies. To add height and illumination, I’ve added several antique silver candlesticks to complete the table I can’t wait to share this table with my guests for a festive, enchanting evening!

Transform your chair ties into beautiful rosettes following these simple instructions.

Match the ends of the chair ties and lay the ends on top of one another.

Winter Whites are perfect for the holidays. Go big, go dramatic.

Twist the ends so that the ties become entwined. Continue to twist until the fabric nearly starts turning in circles upon itself.

65

Holding the fabric closest to the chair, begin wrapping the twisted fabric to form the rosette.

Tuck the end of the fabric snugly behind your rosette.

Primp and turn the rosette for maximum effect. Real leaves can be tucked behind the rosette for a more dramatic flair.

Grab a rose in one hand, and start to gently peel back each of the petals working around the perimeter of the flower.

Continue bending the petals back, leaving only the center most petals tightly coiled.

The final flower presents a bigger, bolder version of itself, making a real statement on your table.

Restaurant Reviews The variety of tapas is exceptional; how can you resist the complimentary cured olives put on the table?

by Russell Trusso I eat out a lot. I’m in San Francisco at Gumps Department Store at least a few times a year for work and in my hometown of Cleveland, I find myself entertaining friends and clients. Here are a few of my favorite restaurants in each city. ZARZUELA, 2000 Hyde St, San Francisco, CA 94109 At the corner of Hyde and Union atop Russian Hill in San Francisco, you will find Zarzuela, a Spanish tapas restaurant. It is considered one of the top 50 restaurants of the city, and with good reason.

“Perbacco: The salumi piemontesi – house cured salami and meats platter is fabulous,”

Zarzuela offers an intimate atmosphere with the friendliest, most efficient and warmest service. The serving staff makes you feel like you have returned home. The variety of tapas is exceptional. How can you resist the complimentary cured olives put on the table? The wait staff is also generous when pouring the Spanish house wines. The entree list includes Pescado Del Dia -- fresh fish that is selected daily at the fish market. I can also heartily recommend the Chuletas De Cordero A La Plancha (lamb chops) and the Paella A La Valenciana Spanish rice cooked with seafood, chicken, vegetables & flavored with saffron. Save some room for the homemade rice pudding that is creamy and delectable. No reservations accepted, so get there early. Very moderate in price. I give it 5 Diamonds. ♢ ♢ ♢ ♢ ♢

Spice is a truly great restaurant, building their menu ideas from locally grown organic produce and meat selections.

PERBACCO, 230 California St, San Francisco, California 94111 “Perbacco” is an Italian word to accentuate positive comments. It can also be an expression of pleasure and surprise, as well as a reference to Bacchus, God of Wine and “good times.” A fitting name for a ristoranté so thoroughly steeped in the traditions of Italy, yet with a refreshingly modern feel and attitude. This beautifully appointed restaurant located in the heart of the financial district. The pastas are made daily and there are always sumptuous specials. The salumi piemontesi – house cured salami and meats platter - is fabulous, and there are several variations from which to choose. Local farmers in Napa supply much of the produce and meat served. The duck breast is memorable and the ragout of short ribs with wide ribbons of pasta is astonishing. To end your dining experience, I suggest the "ugly" cookies of meringue; they are served with homemade salted caramel ice cream. The wine list impressive and expensive as is the rest of the menu, but the tastes, service and atmosphere are well worth it. I give it 4 Diamonds. ♢ ♢ ♢ ♢ SPICE, 5800 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, OH 44102 Spice is a truly great restaurant, building their menu ideas from locally grown organic produce and meat selections. While the menu is limited in size, there are no disappointments in any of the selections. The vegan dish is always new and enjoyable and the fresh fish selections are marvelous. The portions are sizeable and there is no skimping on the platters. When you order your first cocktail or glass of wine, try the polenta French fries with the special dipping sauce. I guarantee you will fight over the last one. There entree of Lake Erie walleye is a magnificent rendition of this common fish, and the vegetables, many from their own greenhouse, are always garden-fresh and expertly prepared. The prices are medium to high in range but worth it. I give Spice 5 Diamonds. ♢ ♢ ♢ ♢ ♢

Chocolate Chip Cookies In my house, there is one cookie that is good enough to give as a gift or satisfies me when I need a little something to eat. Here is the recipe for Lance’s famous Chocolate Chip cookies.

INGREDIENTS •2 1/4 cups of flour •1 tsp. baking soda •1tsp. salt •1 cup softened butter •3/4 cups of granulated sugar •3/4 cups brown sugar •1tsp. pure vanilla extract •2 large whole eggs •1 12oz. package of semi-sweet chocolate pieces •1 cup of your favorite nuts chopped coarsely

Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in bowl. Cream together butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract.

4.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; Be sure to let cookies cool on sheet for at least 1-2 minutes before removing and resting them on parchment paper.Yield about 60 cookies.

3.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating lightly after each. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

Secret trick, if the cookies seem to dry , store them with three or four slices of fresh bread to soften them up! 75

Entertaining in A Hurry

Beer Bread I love to entertain, but what do you do when friends call and ask if they can stop over for coffee? This is my go-to recipe for something that is remarkably simple, delicious, and aromatic.

Don’t worry about getting tipsy from my beer bread recipe; the alcohol is cooked out. The beer is only used to help the leavening process.

Tip: Make up several bags of this simple mix and keep them on hand. You can have fresh baked bread in less than an hour and always seem like the consummate host!

BEER BREAD

Ingredients: - 3 cups self rising flour (must be self-rising flour) - 1/2 cup sugar - 1 beer -Cooking spray

In a mixing bowl, add the Self-Rising Flour, Sugar and mix with a spatula or wooden spoon. Pour the beer into the bowl and mix with spatula. Dough will be lumpy and sticky. Do not over mix - just until all ingredients are mixed.

Spray a bread pan with cooking spray. Put dough into bread pan and gently spread dough with spatula to edges of pan without mashing dough down into pan.

-Butter

77

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Optional: 10 minutes before taking out of oven, brush bread with melted butter and place back in oven for 10 minutes.

The bread is delicious, sweet and dense. It is perfect for butter and jams, served with dips, or sliced thinly (use an electric knife) to make the best grilled cheese sandwich, ever.

FINANCE

Weathering Market Volatility by Todd L. Lloyd With recent news headlines blaring impending financial disaster coming from every political showdown or international crisis, some investors may feel like stuffing cash in their mattresses to avoid volatile stock prices that can sometimes rise or fall by 10 percent or more in a matter of weeks—or even days. Fortunately, there’s a straightforward way to meet the challenge of market volatility. The key is to gain a better understanding of yourself as an investor. This starts by learning your risk tolerance, defining your investment goal, and knowing your time horizon for achieving it. Armed with this information, you can create a mix of investments that can weather big swings in the stock market — while still providing the potential for gains over time. “To thine own self be true.” Shakespeare’s maxim for a happier life applies to investing too. I’ve spoken to investors who sweat every penny they could lose, while others view their accounts like gambling chips at a Vegas casino.

Most people fall in between these two extremes.

recognize and reach the right trade-off between risk and return for you.

Talk with your financial advisor about your investing experience during periods of dramatic market swings, including declines. For example, how you reacted to changes in your portfolio during the early 2000s’ when the dot.com bubble burst or in the Great Recession of 2008 can be very revealing to you and your advisor. Knowing your own sensitivity to loss will help guide you in the choice of suitable investments. So when market turbulence hits, you will be less likely to react emotionally.

There’s no way to predict when a market downturn will hit. That’s why it’s important to review and adjust your asset allocation strategy now — before the next big surprise comes along.

Be specific to build an all-weather portfolio In addition to your risk tolerance, it’s important to put a timeframe and monetary number to your financial goals. Wanting to be “comfortable” in retirement is a goal shared by many, but its vagueness will not help you and your advisor create the investment strategy that is right for you. Be specific and talk details about how much is needed, when it is needed, and how it will be dispersed.

Asset allocation cannot eliminate the risk of fluctuating prices and uncertain returns. ********** This article was written by Todd L. With this information you can build an allweather portfolio: one designed to perform reasonably well in up markets without exposing you to risk beyond your tolerance when stocks or other asset classes hit a rough patch. Work with your advisor on selecting the asset allocation — how your portfolio is divided among different types of investments—that is right for you. Often this involves finding the right balance of stocks, bonds and cash holdings for your goal. In general, the more stocks you hold, the more vulnerable your portfolio is to short-term drops in the stock market. But avoiding stocks — which offer strong return potential — may make it difficult to reach longer-term financial goals. Your advisor can help you

advice from your doctor

by Russell Trusso

There is one conversation when I am talking with friends that occurs all of the time: taking medications before going to bed. Most people tell me they take their prescription drugs, or some aspirin or Advil with a sip of water and off to bed they go. All I can think of when I hear this is those pills are sitting somewhere in my

friend’s esophagus, slowly dissolving there rather than in working their stomach.

Here is my thought on this issue: Take your bedtime meds about 20 minutes before you go to bed and sit up after taking them so you give them time to get to your stomach where they belong. I know if I suggest more water with your pills no one is going to do it because patients

complain that makes them have to get up during the night to use the bathroom. All I can think of when I hear this is those pills are sitting somewhere in my friend’s esophagus, slowly dissolving

So try this simple new way of taking those nightly pills. Your esophagus will thank you!
