Just wait,

You’ll See... publisher’s note It was mid winter. I was standing in the kitchen holding a branch of a persimmon tree that was fully covered with ripe, fleshy fruit. The crop was so abundant that year, that the branch broke under the weight of its juicy fruit. I held the branch in my hands and looked at it for a while. It was of special value to me. This tree was planted by my father, who passed away just a few months ago. My sister and I were still making peace with the idea that he was gone. My dad was quite a character, the kind of person who stands out from the rest. A doctor of mathematical science, he headed a national science center with over 300 people under his management. He was also a great entrepreneur who managed to build a fortune doing business during the time of the economic recession that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. A great entertainer, he used to drive my sister and me absolutely nuts with his jokes and neverending energy. He was always on the go, always full of life, humor, and amusing ideas.

An example of one of his fun ideas was planting an orchard. He always loved gardening but didn’t have a chance to do it while living in an apartment in Uzbekistan. When we moved to the U.S. and rented a house, my father claimed the backyard. He bought a bunch of exotic trees and planted them all over the property. One of them, a fragile, flimsy persimmon tree became his obsession. He would dig that tree out and replant it every time we moved. We always thought this was humorous because the tree would never bear any fruit! When we teased him about it, he would just smile back and say, “Just wait, and you’ll see!”

He turned out to be right! One spring, that little persimmon tree suddenly bloomed and was covered with so much fruit, that branches were breaking under the heavy weight. It happened to be the first spring after my father’s death. He was gone, but he left something behind, and it wasn’t a tree in our garden. It was a lesson that I’ll pass on to my children. You always reap what you sow; “Just wait, and you’ll see.” So, let’s sow more love and kindness and wait for it to come back to us in abundance.

Sacramento Ultrasound Institute Best Health Training Program

We focus on the quality, not quantity, of our graduates, and let them be our advertising. Sima Dermishyan

Sacramento Ultrasound Institute (SUI), a college for those seeking allied health training, is the achievement of founder and CEO Sima Dermishyan and her son Samuel Yarmagyan. Now Chief Operating Officer, Sam grew up alongside his mother throughout the school’s evolution and tackled expanding roles into adulthood. Sima and Sam treat every student as family, the foundation of their success. Sima developed the sonography program at College of Career Training in 2001 and taught there through 2009, when that school diminished in size, with only her ultrasound class remaining. “We purchased the school then, gave it the SUI name and began rebuilding,” explains Sam.

SUI’s, first goal was gaining accreditation, which was granted in 2015. Sima and Sam then labored day and night to arrange financial aid, which they achieved in 2016. SUI’s success made two moves necessary, the first to a 2,500-square-foot space in 2014, and in 2016, to its current 12,000-square-foot Arden-Arcade area campus. “Sima has impacted her students’ lives tremendously,” says Sam. “She truly treats each one as a son or daughter, and they often return to thank her for helping launch their careers.” The school has more than 100 students in their general ultrasound program, their advanced program

specializing in echocardiography, and their new MRI program. In 2018, SUI will greatly expand, adding five more training programs and, with all approvals in place, a low-cost diagnostic imaging center. SUI graduates establish careers at local hospitals and clinics, including Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente, UC Davis Health System and Dignity Health. As they settle into the medical community, they espouse SUI’s advantages and family culture. (916) 877-7977 www.sui.edu admissions@sui.edu

TEACH THEM

TO FISH IN AMAZON AND YOU’LL FEED THEM

FOR A LIFETIME by Nika Franchi

A

As I’m entering the stylishly decorated Russian Time conference room in Sacramento a few minutes before the start of my interview, the couple that agreed to sit down with me today, Tatyana and Mikhail (Mike) Kharitonov, is already comfortably settled in leather chairs. She is an intense, stunning blond fit to be on the cover of Vogue, and he is a focused, athletic, very handsome man. Their powerful drive and unity of purpose are so palpable, you can almost see the air vibrating around them. Little wonder that they are such successful entrepreneurs and popular YouTubers. I take a deep breath, count to three and dive in.

You two look like you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth — beautiful, wealthy, happy, driven. Have you always been this way? Mike: No, not at all! Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Tatyana and I come from very different environments, different families and countries even — she is from Ukraine and I’m from Russia. Before we met online 12 years ago, and even after I married her and came to live in the US, we have each tried our hands at all sorts of things — real estate, care homes, house cleaning, electrical work, to name just a few. But we have always focused on the main idea: how to make the most money while gaining the most freedom. We took classes and made our fair share of mistakes. But that’s just how we found what really works for us — selling things through Amazon. And now we are trying to spread the knowledge, to teach others how to do it right so they, too, can live comfortably, doing things they enjoy.

photo by: Olha Melokhina | www.OlhaPhotography.com

“A job is about selling your time for money. But time is a finite, extremely precious commodity, it should be spent doing what you like — raising your kids, helping others, travelling, buying nice things. Money is much easier to come by; you just need to know how. Then you can make it work for YOU. And that gives you freedom to enjoy your life.” I didn’t realize that there was science behind selling things on Amazon, that one needed to go to school for that. I thought it was just “make or buy something and sell it.” What am I missing? Tatyana: No, one doesn’t really have to go to school. But learning from someone who’s already made mistakes is a nice shortcut, don’t you think? These lessons were costly — or would’ve been costly for us if we hadn’t done our homework. You see, some of the selling tactics require a sizeable investment and take forever. And by then, your market may have gone away, and you’ll have made very little, if any money. So, we searched and found a much more cost-effective and dynamic approach. But there was still quite a bit of knowhow, the little, pesky details that could make it or break it, and that’s just what we now teach our students and our YouTube Family X channel followers. And even with our tips and tricks you still must work pretty hard at first to get the hang of it, but it works! Oh, I believe you! But how do your students know you’re the real deal? Many people teach things they have no idea how to do themselves. Mike (laughing): Very true! We’ve certainly met teachers like that, and that’s why we’re totally transparent. We share our sales numbers, even our TAX RETURNS with our students. Within the span of four months, we made over 70 20

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

thousand dollars in sales, and anybody can verify that. And see [he’s proudly showing me screenshots on his phone], one of our most motivated students made his first sale within three days of finishing the class, and he’s so excited! That’s why we do it, so others can also prosper. That’s our way of giving back to the community that supported us through tougher times. But doesn’t it ever get boring? Tatyana: Absolutely not! If you want to stay relevant in this business, in this 21st century, you must constantly master new skills! Just think of social media marketing alone — how much is changing every day. You have to keep up, and that’s very exciting! You see, we believe that non-stop learning and thinking things through is key to everything — business success, happy life, happy community. This is what we teach our four kids. FOUR KIDS?! Mike: Yes, we have four kids aged five through 18. Tatyana and I each have a daughter from a previous marriage, and our little son and daughter are our “joint venture.” So yes, one of the main principles we teach them is “think carefully before you act.” Analyze, calculate, consider the consequences. Never stop learning. Never let your brain get lazy and fat! And it’s working, at least for us and our kids, and we’re trying to be the best role models we can be for them.

We strongly believe that if Tatyana and I came to the US and made something of ourselves, then pretty much anybody can. America really is a land of opportunity, and if we just give people a hand up, teach them to fish, so to speak, in Amazon waters, then with some effort they can do well. But they must really apply themselves. That’s wonderful and very wise. But I’m just curious, do you really believe that you can think your way to fulfillment? Tatyana: No, of course there are many other parts that are equally, if not more important. Thinking is just the starting point. Kindness, compassion are things that we value tremendously, that we practice in our business and daily life. We are actively engaged in many charities, and we make sure that the kids understand the importance of social responsibility, of taking care of their community. Our children are the ones that make sure that homeless people around our office regularly get some kind of food. Ultimately, you know, money is great, work is great, but the joy is not in the money, it’s in the service. You must give back to the community, and I’m not talking only about the Russian-speaking community! As much as we can, we should make people’s lives better, uplift them. That’s key! I can tell that you both are very dedicated, caring parents. How do you find time for parenting? Mike: We make time, because this is the most important job we’ll ever have! If we don’t raise our children right, who will? What’s the point of having them then? I actually stop whatever I’m doing when one of my children comes to me with a question — because right now, exactly when this question came into their mind, is the perfect time to answer it. Tomorrow may be too late. Tatyana: We never fight with our children, but we set very firm, consistent boundaries, and they understand that disobedience will have consequences: they may have their privileges taken away. They also know that once they fly the nest, we will not, ever, provide any help other than moral support. There will be no monthly allowance checks.

photo by: Olha Melokhina | www.OlhaPhotography.com

So, they’d better apply themselves, learn, so they can do well later in life. The proverbial “pouch of gold” will eventually run out, but the “clay tablets of knowledge” will carry them through! Do you think anyone can just follow your approach and do well? Mike: No, definitely not everyone. Those who are lazy and passive will never make it. With the knowledge and skills we share through our school, one must still must work hard and hustle. Skills need to be practiced or you lose them. Looking back, is there any advice you’d like to give to a younger version of yourselves? Mike: Don’t waste time! Don’t blow through your life, it’s too precious. Don’t wait to start living — go and do it right now. Doesn’t matter if you succeed or fail, just don’t wait to live. The past is over, the future is not yet here, and whatever you want to do, do it RIGHT NOW. Right now is your life!

“Every uneducated, under-nurtured child spells out our unfortunate future. Ignorant children will be tomorrow’s poor, uncaring lawmakers, sloppy surgeons, lazy builders. Our children will shape our old age. They are the best investment one can ever make: love them, teach them right from wrong, direct them, and your family and the society will be healthy. Our motto is “Don’t be greedy, don’t live just for yourself. Live for the good of the society!” RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

SUPER HUMAN HOW TO BECOME A

Even if you haven’t heard the term “biohacking” before, you’ve probably encountered some version of it. Maybe you’ve seen Wim Hof, aka “The Iceman”, extolling the benefits of extreme breathing and cold exposure techniques. Maybe you’ve heard about Dave Asprey, head of Bulletproof Coffee, who has spent more than $1 million on supplements, devices, and equipment for his in-home laboratory. Maybe you, like me, have a friend who had a detailed DNA exam in order to know what gene-related diseases he should be aware of. These are all types of biohacking, a broad term for a lifestyle that’s growing increasingly popular, and not just in the Silicon Valley, where it really took off. In general, the task of biohackers is to squeeze out of the body, maximum efficiency with minimum effort in order to extend life and improve its quality. The implementation of this plan can be very different. It all depends on the degree of involvement and financial costs. While biohackers may invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in their own health, there are equally effective ways to improve your own health and quality of life much less expensively. Check out these five easy ways to “hack” yourself in order to become a superhuman.

Health expert Guy de Boo with his business partner & wife, Sheryl Reeves de Boo photo by: Olha Melokhina | www.OlhaPhotography.com

Our health expert is Guy de Boo — an incredibly knowledgeable health expert and international speaker, who has served in the Special Forces for 27 years as a Colonel in NATO and a pilot for the Air Force, unknowingly dealing with cosmic radiation day to day. His life path turned 180 degrees after he began to study the relationship between cosmic radiation and brain tumors, and began to look for the most effective ways to prevent cancer (In 2019, roughly 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States). Through trial and error, Guy has found a unique nutrition product, which he proudly promotes and has been taking himself for over 25 years. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Roseville. Rotary is famous for its international programs to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, as well as its efforts to promote peace. Guy’s life’s passion and mission is to “fight diseases” using simple and 24

easy programs and products. “Health is Wealth” is his motto, and he has helped thousands of people in their journey towards a better, more successful and healthier life. He motivates thousands of people to push their limits in order to live longer, smarter, and healthier. Guy shared with us his amazing, easy to follow advice that produces visible results.

SAY ‘NO’ TO

SUGAR Did you know that over 70% of diseases are linked to your nutrition? If you want to change your lifestyle, it’s definitely time to say ‘NO’ to sugar. And, of course, this does not only mean giving up your favorite sweets. Sugar is everywhere. It is in bread, buns, cereals, granola, different sauces that you find on supermarket shelves and even in delicacies that may not seem so sweet to the taste. The sugar epidemic has already affected our

children; the latest statistics shows that 35% of kids in the U.S. are obese. That is why if you want to change your eating habits and choose a healthier lifestyle, you definitely need to reconsider your sugar intake.

HUMOR & GRATITUDE The link between humor and intelligence is obvious to scientists — it takes not only emotions, but also cognitive processing to laugh. We all know that positive emotions improve the work of the brain. Humor isn’t a cure-all, but it’s a proven way to ease stress and relieve pain. More and more research findings support this. Finding the humor in things can create positive thoughts. That releases a type of molecule in the body that helps fight stress and perhaps has the potential for fighting illnesses such as depression, sleep disorders and cognitive disorders —

for example, dementia. Another extremely important attitude is gratitude. Pay attention to what’s around you and notice what’s good about your days. You’ll get in the habit of being grateful for even the little things such as snuggling with a pet, listening to the birds or savoring a tasty meal. Doing that creates new pathways in your brain, which can help build new patterns of positive thinking and may steer your life in a happier direction.

SLEEP Believe it or not, one in three Americans have trouble sleeping. Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later. Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain, increase stress hormone levels, and may result in irritability, impatience, inability to

concentrate, and moodiness. In order to relax properly — forget about having a meal right before going to bed, and put your smartphone as far away as possible. The optimum temperature for falling asleep is between 64-68° F. Also, be sure to ventilate and humidify your bedroom well.

EXERCISE If you exercise for six pack abs or a firm butt, you may be a fitness model rather than a biohacker. Biohackers train in order to generate metabolic processes as much as possible. And one of the best ways to accomplish this is HIIT or high-intensity interval training. HIIT alternates your training regimes with short periods of intense exercise followed by less-intense recovery periods. HIIT incorporates both a warmup prior to training and a cool down after each workout.

NUTRITION PRODUCTS Eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep are the best ways to maintain your natural energy levels. I believe that we should all be getting most of our nutrients from foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. I do think it’s realistic for some of us to meet most of our nutritional needs through food alone. But, most of us don’t live in ‘perfect eating’ worlds. Our food supply, busy lifestyles, and simply our choices make that task very difficult. This is why I say that there’s a time and place for supplementing your diet. In my opinion, the best nutritional products for maintaining your health are those that are scientifically proven and made from real fruits and vegetables without artificial and synthetic ingredients.

Each of your works is a unique story that inspires many. How do you create your sand paintings and where do you get your inspiration? I get asked this question often and yet it is still difficult for me to answer. I really don’t know. Of course, I am an author and an artist, so I begin with an idea of what my finished project will look like. But typically, I’m led to my table and initially touch the sand with just a faint idea of the final product. If I read a story of a child in pain, I try to imagine his or her suffering as well as the suffering of the child’s parents. I have nothing in my head but this pain when I create videos about sick children. I come to the table, pray and ask for God to lead me. “Let me be a pencil in your hand,” I ask. And then, a story emerges. This is the genesis of my most famous works, Love Always Wins and Don’t

I am always afraid I may cry while painting a story but thankfully, I have nerves of steel and I manage to stay in control. Although my stories may be very emotional as I retell of war, death and love, I know I can’t cry. If a tear falls on the glass surface, the sand will stick, and the performance will end. How have your children changed you? What did they teach you? I like to say that I was born again when I had my children. It is basically true that motherhood can radically change a woman. With the birth of my eldest son, Dima, I experienced a miraculous sensation which is still with me and continues to intensify. I came to an understanding that each human life is valuable. Cradling my baby, Dima, in my arms, I would often regret the times I had offended someone. I am sure that motherhood is directly responsible for my art. If I didn’t have those feelings after becoming a mother, I don’t believe I would have created the stories that are now watched by millions of viewers around the world. Later, Sima Seraphim was born, and Heaven came down to earth. I finally became who I am now. What childhood experiences helped shape you to become the person you are today? I often think about this. I’m sure I surprise many when I say that abundance of free time, lack of entertainment and boredom helped me to become an artist. Today, children are involved in the cycle of entertainment, activities and information. In my childhood, we had unstructured free time. I loved to sit in my room and look at cracks on the walls. To me, they were not simply cracks. Instead, I created an entire imaginary world with them. I did the same with floors and ceilings. A large book of Leon Bakst’s costumes, which was in my mother’s bookcase, also influenced me greatly. I still remember trying to reach that book and was finally successful at the age of four. I fell into this incredible, artistic, crazy world, like Alice in the rabbit hole. That world of art both attracted and scared me. At that time, I had no idea that I would eventually become an artist. My mother was an artist and fashion designer. Beauty and chaos always reigned in our house. It was a sweet chaos of fabrics, patches, buttons, and pins. Growing up in the

Soviet Union, everyone had similar apartments with colorless wallpaper. My mother replaced our wallpaper with beautiful fabrics. She made interesting dolls, pillows and created a completely fabulous world to grow up in. How could I not become an artist after all that? As for shaping my children’s environment, I try not schedule too many activities and I limit their electronic usage as much as possible. I am convinced that it’s beneficial for a person to be bored at times because our consciousness gives birth to creativity. What are you preparing for your upcoming performance at the Harris Center? This is an absolutely amazing project. I really love history and I am happy to be part of such a project. This is a symbiosis of music and live sand painting. The project, Forgotten Kingdom, is unique. It is a theatrical production based on arranged Sephardic songs of the 19th century! This is the story of real people who lived at the crossroads of two different eras. Creating sand

During these last 10 years since winning Ukraine’s Got Talent, I have created about 50 sand films about sick children or adults.

SURE WAYS

TO FAIL

YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA AD CAMPAIGN

MISTAKES Design not adapted for social media. A newspaper ad or a poster ad will never bring you customers if you simply post it on social media. Keep in mind that you only have two seconds to make an impression on the reader. Lots of unreadable text or clipped images will not catch a reader’s attention.

Publishing stock images with generic text. Nowadays, people are turned away by repetitive ads featuring men dressed in business suits shaking hands, or a pretty woman who blinds you with her perfect, white smile. People are tired of fakes on social media. We want reality, even if it’s not quite perfect. Besides, network platforms use algorithms that discern whether the photos are unique or stock, with the latter having fewer views on social media as a consequence.

Using software for auto post planning. Some companies replace employees with auto-posting, or they hire marketing companies that provide affordable services that use eight to 10-year-old strategies. It doesn’t occur to them that these posts are long since “dead”. Social network algorithms can discern when a third-party service is being used and may ban your posts, dropping even your organic views to the bare minimum.

Professional promo clip is THE key. And the rest is... history. It is true that video does matter, but that is only assures 50% of your success; the other 50% depends on your ability to circulate it. If you flunk the second part, you effectively strip the video of its value. But, if your social media strategy is a success, you can achieve the results you were aiming for.

Paid ads are enough. Statistically, 74% of ad budgets paid to Google and Facebook may be a waste of money. Facebook designers agree, saying that if your content is organically unpopular, it will be difficult to gain views whether they were paid ads or not. Also, if there’s no organic reaction, Facebook often fails to deliver your paid campaign to your target audience, even if you set the right region, age and other parameters. 30 30

Today, over three billion people are actively using social media, spending an average of 165 minutes per day on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and the rapidly growing TikTok. Understandably, social media has quickly become one of the most popular advertising platforms. Last year alone, social media’s ad revenue exceeded nine billion dollars! However, not every social media advertising campaign is successful. Here are the top five mistakes to avoid while creating your social media ad campaign.

Yelena Nikitskaya Social Media Strategist 12 years of Digital Marketing experience Founder of Dezaro Marketing, Motivational Speaker, Blogger and Educator at online marketing school yelenanikitskaya #DezaroSchool | www.Dezaro.net

SOLUTIONS Only publish posters adapted in scale with legible fonts. CANVA, a wonderful, free app and website, offers many templates created by professional designers. CANVA covers all details of your design including minimizing text and uses only legible fonts.

Publish photos that have been taken for you by a professional photographer. Or, better yet, take your own pictures! An expensive camera is by no means a must; a smartphone with a good camera will do just fine. Use a filter to retouch your pictures and – bingo! – you have a winner! All it takes is a photo editing app, Facetune2, for example, and even an average photo will be eye-catching!

These days, it is not the number of posts that matters; it’s their quality. It’s not mandatory to post daily. Post two to three times per week on your Instagram Wall or Facebook to keep your accounts in great shape. What matters most is what you post and how you write. Alternate your content; the algorithms that run social networks create a profile of you based on your content criteria (such as text, links, video, live streams, photos, and albums). If your posts always fit the same format, e.g., a photo and a brief text, you will never be able to beat your competition.

Don’t focus on the quality of the recording or on using expensive equipment to shoot your promo. Focus on the actual content, which will eventually attract your ideal customers. Also, since IGTV and Stories appeared on Instagram, vertical videos began to trend. So, remember the first image and the first seconds of the video matter most. Your video may even be recorded on a phone if you have a good idea and script.

Only run paid ads if your account is enjoying good ratings based on views, reposts, likes and other activity. Limit ads to interesting and useful content. If you are not thrilled reading your own content, you will be hard-pressed to attract potential customers and bring success to your business.

The Jungles OF COSTA

RICA by Kory Barri

What springs to mind when imagining a weeklong getaway in Costa Rica? Relaxing on white sands with a beverage in hand? Trekking through lush green jungles with soaring toucans overhead? Costa Rica provides these opportunities and so much more. Beyond its famous toucans, monkeys, and sloths, Costa Rica is home to five percent of the world’s biodiversity; an outstanding number for a country under an eighth the size of California!

Costa Rica has a little something for everyone. Stunning volcanic craters, some of the world’s best surf spots, and endless fields of coffee beans. In fact, many of Costa Rica’s coffee farmers are partnered with Starbucks! But believe me when I say that nothing beats a fresh cup straight off the plant. For these reasons my family ditched the rainy California weather this spring and headed south to the land of Pura Vida.

THE LAND OF PURA VIDA After a short plane ride, we grabbed a rental car and headed to La Fortuna, home not only to Costa Rica’s famous Arenal Volcano but also some of its most exotic wildlife. In an intimate tour with Bogarin Wildlife Travel, we wandered a labyrinthine garden and encountered an assortment of critters including sloths, frogs, and giant owls. We enjoyed the tour so much that we went back for an eerie night tour the same day. Luckily, we never crossed paths with the Fer-de-Lance, Costa Rica’s most venomous snake, but we did find a translucent frog! Feeling brave and not yet having our fill of trees, we geared up for a ziplining expedition through the jungle. Thick fog hung in the zipline trajectory, creating a unique and daring experience. Once back on our feet, we ventured to a local hot springs river to warm ourselves up.

Finally, we arrived at our bungalow, greeted by the songs of tropical birds and friendly monkeys. From our patio, we could see Manuel Antonio Beach below with all of its natural splendor. During our time there, we explored the beach, relaxed by the poolside, and even signed up for a yoga class. Pura Vida indeed!

I heard about intermittent fasting (IF) from my wife. She is a health addict and always trying to implement new, healthy ideas in our family’s lifestyle. “Igor,” said my wife, “ you should try this! The latest Harvard study showed that IF is safe, easy and incredibly effective! This type of fasting can lead to weight loss, stabilized blood sugar, lowered blood pressure, reduced inflammation, improvements in memory and stress resistance, and slower aging.” I was incredibly skeptical at first and unspeakably surprised at the end of my one-month intermittent fasting experience. I’ve dropped 10 pounds and improved my sports performance, and even got rid of my high blood pressure that has been tormenting me. So, let’s dig deeper and see why this type of diet is number one among celebrities, corporate executives and famous bloggers.

WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING? On the 16/8 diet, you spend 16 hours each day consuming nothing but unsweetened beverages like water, coffee, and tea. During the remaining eighthour window, you eat all your meals and snacks. While the term, intermittent fasting, (or IF) may be new to many of us, the practice isn’t all that different from the way our ancestors likely lived: Hunt, gather, and eat during daylight; sleep and fast during darkness.

INTERMITTENT FASTING: THE ULTIMATE DIET THAT REALLY WORKS

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Hollywood stars, and social media influencers alike prescribe to the 16/8 diet, a form of intermittent fasting also known as the 8-hour diet. Proponents claim that restricting mealtimes help with everything from weight loss to lowering the risk of chronic disease.

by Igor Alatortev

A MAJOR REASON MANY PEOPLE START AND STICK TO INTERMITTENT FASTING IS TO LOSE WEIGHT. A 2015 SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF 40 STUDIES, PUBLISHED IN MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR ENDOCRINOLOGY, SHOWED THAT INTERMITTENT FASTING WAS EFFECTIVE FOR WEIGHT LOSS, WITH A TYPICAL LOSS OF SEVEN TO 12 POUNDS OVER 10 WEEKS.

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

37

INTERMITTENT FASTING METHODS There are several different variations of intermittent fasting, all of which involve splitting the day or week into eating and fasting periods. During the fasting periods, you eat either very little or nothing at all. These are the most popular methods: • The 16/8 method: It involves skipping breakfast and restricting your daily eating period to 8 hours, such as 12–8 p.m., and fasting for the remaining 16 hours. • Eat-Stop-Eat: This involves fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week. For example, not eating from dinner one day until dinner the next day. • The 5:2 diet: With this method, you consume only 500–600 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week and eat normally the other five days. Many people find the 16/8 method to be the simplest, most sustainable and easiest to stick to, and I agree with them.

BENEFITS OF INTERMITTENT FASTING When you fast, several things happen in your body on the cellular and molecular level. Human Growth Hormone (HGH): The levels of this hormone skyrocket, increasing as much as five-fold. Benefits include weight loss and muscle gain, to name a few. Insulin: Insulin sensitivity improves and levels of insulin drop dramatically. Lower insulin levels make stored body fat more accessible. Cellular repair: Your cells initiate cellular repair processes including autophagy. Autophagy is the process of cells digesting and removing old, dysfunctional proteins that build up inside cells. Gene expression: Changes are seen in the function of genes related to longevity and protection against disease. Cancer prevention: Promising evidence from animal studies indicate that IF may help prevent cancer. There is also some evidence from human cancer patients that suggest fasting reduced various side effects of chemotherapy.

DRAWBACKS OF 16/8 INTERMITTENT FASTING 16/8 intermittent fasting may be associated with many health benefits, but it does come with some drawbacks and may not be right for everyone. Restricting your intake to just eight hours per day may cause some people to eat more than usual during eating periods to make up for hours spent fasting. This may lead to weight gain, digestive problems and the development of unhealthy eating habits.

SHOULD YOU TRY 16/8 FASTING? Ultimately, it’s a personal choice. I really fell in love with the 16:8 hours’ lifestyle but, of course, it won’t work for everyone. If you are considering intermittent fasting, I’d encourage you to try it by starting small and keeping it as simple as possible: close your kitchen after dinner, aim to get more sleep, make sure to have enough fruits and veggies in your fridge and avoid fast food and sugar, which is hidden everywhere. By following these easy steps, you’ll feel better and be surprised how your energy batteries have been recharged!

THE BEGINNING Six years ago, Maria worked in the world of numbers where there was no opportunity to show creativity. Her “sweet career” began in the United States. «We moved to California five years ago after my husband accepted a new job opportunity. A couple of months later, we found out we were expecting a baby. But not only one baby, it was twins! Therefore, my “sweet activity” started while I was on maternity leave. Yes, with two small children and without support from relatives.”

MOUSSE PASSION Maria’s love for mousse cakes sparked as she was surfing the internet. She saw a cake that looked nothing like anything she had ever seen before. It was a minimalistic, perfectly smooth, glossy cake in an unusual geometric shape. That stylish dessert completely captured her attention. She looked for recipes and tools to make a similar cake. Literally, bit by bit, Maria gathered information about the intricacies of cooking these cakes and put the whole puzzle together.

DREAMS THAT CAME TRUE Today, Maria is the founder of the company, ART DESSERT LLC, which offers a range of high-quality European desserts. She meticulously plans out her recipes to the smallest detail so that each baked cake is natural, balanced, delicate and decadent. Her company offers a wide variety of original tastes for the most demanding gourmets. In August, Maria launched training workshops that allow anyone to learn how to bake these amazing cakes as well as learn all the subtleties of working with European mousse cakes from an expert.

PLASTIC PLANET The Real Cost of Using Plastic by Lika Emelyanova EVERY 30 SECONDS, one person dies due to plastic pollution! Yes, it’s true. A report published by Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the Institute of Development Studies finds that 400,000 to one million people in the developing world are dying every year as a result of mismanaged waste including plastic. Do we have a chance to save our planet? Since 2000, the plastics industry has produced as much plastic as all the preceding years combined. In

2016, the most recent year for which data is available, production reached 396 million metric tons. That is equivalent to 53 kilograms of plastic for each person on the planet! If current production increases by 40%, 2030 will be the beginning of the end for us and our planet... Every minute, every single day, the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters our oceans. In the name of profit and convenience, corporations are literally choking our planet with a substance that does not just “go away” when we toss it into a bin. There are no easy solutions, but it is critical to know what the real cost of plastic is and how we can help our planet survive and be a better place for future generations.

8 WAYS TO REDUCE PLASTIC Bring your own shopping bag

Purchase second hand instead of buying new

Carry a reusable water bottle

Avoid plastic wrap and zip lock bags

Say “No” to disposable straws & cutlery

Never release balloons into the air

Choose products made from recycled materials

Have a home cooked meal

Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years. Production increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons in 2015. Production is expected to double by 2050. 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and one million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually. Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world, from busy tourist beaches to uninhabited, tropical islands.

PLASTIC & CLIMATE

PLASTIC & HEALTH

Plastic production and pollution are fuelling climate change. The plastic production process already has a carbon footprint larger than the UK’s. If growth in production continues at the current rate, by 2050 the plastic industry could account for 20% of the world’s total oil consumption. The burning of plastic as a waste disposal method is also a significant contributor to emissions. Across the world, a staggering three billion people have no access to proper waste management. Plastic waste is dumped and often openly burned, resulting in the release of toxic chemicals and increased air pollution.

The main enemy to our health is the micro plastic. According to the international classification, this category includes any plastic particle less than five mm in length.

WAKE UP CALL A recent report from the Center for International Environmental Law is very disappointing. The authors identified four thousand potentially dangerous chemical compounds, of which one thousand were analyzed in detail and 148 were identified as very dangerous. It may take decades to trace the long-term effect of hundreds of synthetic composites. And how much plastic will be thrown away during this time? Even without research, it is clear that the plastic problem is becoming a challenge to our “planet’s health” and we should all be motivated to help solve it!

Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down. The service life of a plastic bag is 12 minutes, and it can take more than 400 years to completely decompose.

The main sources of micro plastic are synthetic clothes, tires, road markings, cosmetic and cleaning products, tea bags, gums and diapers. In September 2017, a study of tap water samples from 14 countries was commissioned by the Association of Journalists Orb Media. The main conclusion – treatment facilities are not able to hold small pieces of plastic; more than 80% of the samples were positive (72% in Western Europe, 94% in the United States). Soon after that study, German scientists discovered micro plastics in honey and beer, and in Korea, micro plastics were found in table salt. The British went even further saying that every day, a person swallows about a hundred synthetic fibers along with household dust. That means, no matter what we do, we will not be able to avoid micro plastic. How dangerous is this? The Austrian Society of Gastroenterology claimed that “eating” micro plastic is associated with the increasing incidence of colon and blood cancers. And many scientists consider that use of plastic products leads to ingestion and/or inhalation of large amounts of both micro plastic particles as well as hundreds of toxic substances with carcinogenic, abnormal developmental, or endocrine disrupting properties.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT VARIOUS JOBS

What makes a true leader different than everyone else? He is always hungry. Hungry for new victories, goals, and achievements. He does not say, “I can’t.” Rather, he asks, “How can I?” This talented and very ambitious, young man is Ivan Bukin. A Moscow native, Ivan served as a military officer in a Russian Outback and is now a senior project manager at Siemens. He manages projects in Portland, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Atlanta, with an estimated cost of tens of millions of dollars. And this, as Ivan says, is just the beginning.

MAN OF ACTION

IVAN BUKIN:

Tell us about your most vivid memory during your tour of duty in the town of Borzya.

In order to comprehend the conditions in which I served, it is worth understanding the climate in this region. In summer, it is incredibly hot, and in winter, it is hellish cold. The frost is chilling as the temperature drops below -40 Fahrenheit. It does not take long on the streets to shiver to the bone. Under my command was a group of 30 young soldiers. My mission was to motivate them to repair old military equipment in such terrible weather conditions. It was an amazing opportunity that gave me invaluable experience and skills in managing people.

What was your last New Year’s Resolution?

One of my goals was to read 24 books in a year. Here are some of my “Must Reads”: Future Politics by Jamie Susskind, Measure What Matters by John Doerr and Five Levels of Leadership by John C. Maxwell.

Which of the books that you’ve read made the greatest impression?

David Allen’s Getting Things Done.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Purposeful, straightforward, communicative.

What thought about the U.S. faded upon your arrival?

You’ve been working for Siemens for six years, three in Moscow and three in Sacramento. Which do you like more and why?

Regarding projects, pay and career opportunities, I certainly prefer Sacramento. In Moscow, I worked in the heart of the Russian Capital with a great working environment and fascinating views.

I had a very different perspective of the quality of service. I assumed that service would always be A+ because of the way it is presented in the movies. But, in reality, this is not the case. You don’t get adequate service in all cafes and restaurants. Rather, it appears to me, the key to good service is to spend a lot of money.

What impressed you the most about California?

I fell in love with the number of national parks and unique natural reserves that you can find not only in California but also in the other states. Perhaps, I have been most impressed by Zion Park in Utah, Antelope Canyon in Arizona and Yellowstone.

The main projects you manage are tram digitalization and structural repairs. How much can it cost to upgrade one tram and what interesting innovations are used in this area?

Although the actual cost of tram digitalization, repairs and upgrades are classified, they range between six and seven digits. Today’s technologies allow us to collect a huge amount of data that we analyze and use to make this type of transportation as convenient and efficient as possible.

Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

I plan to be on the Board of the Directors of Siemens.

In addition to your work, you are highly active in sports. For instance, you finished an IRONMAN race (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run). Why did you decide to compete and what motivates you in such extreme races?

To conquer yourself, to overcome your fears and weaknesses is a kind of drug, which once hooked, is hard to get off. I was inspired by a video on the Internet and began to gradually prepare for my first IRONMAN. But, the most difficult race in my life, was not even the IRONMAN. Recently, I participated in a trail running race where we had to finish 72 miles in three consecutive days. Honestly, by the end of the first day, my legs were so sore, I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish. And in that moment, I realized it was a real test of my willpower. I was able to finish the race and proved to myself that limits are only in my head.

Not All are

Burgers

Created

Equal

by Bethany Crouch

Local husband and wife foodies, Phil and Danea Horn, truly relish the experience of a delicious meal. When they elected to pursue a plant-based diet and healthier lifestyle, Danea began experimenting with how to make their favorite recipes vegan. A meal that the pair struggled to replace was the nostalgic cheeseburger. All the while, they never stopped dreaming about, one day, opening a quick serve restaurant centered on ‘Convenient Consciousness’ made from modern ingredients. photos by: Olha Melokhina | www.OlhaPhotography.com

In 2013, Danea, who has navigated chronic kidney disease since birth, published her first book, Chronic Resilience. Just months later and days before their 11th wedding anniversary, Phil, then an executive with the Sacramento Kings, donated a kidney to his wife. It was during this time period, steeped in new beginnings, the couple reignited the dream of opening a plant-based, fast food restaurant. Danea and Phil discovered Beyond Meat burgers in 2017. These burgers are made from pea protein and as Phil says, “packs a flavor astonishingly similar in taste and satisfaction to that of a traditional burger.” When the Horns made their discovery, they knew they had found something really special. So special that, when Beyond Meat went public just days before Burger Patch opened, Beyond Meat had a projected valuation of $1 billion. CNBC reported that Beyond Meat stock rose "more than 160% in its first day trading on the public markets." In addition, at one point, it had soared nearly 300% above its initial public offering price, "giving the company a market value of $5.8 billion." Alongside local Sacramento chefs, Scott Ostrander and Paul DiPierro of Origami, the Horns designed, "a purposefully simple, delicious menu" says Phil. They offer fewer than a dozen menu items (although there are countless more on their ‘secret menu’). They have also created their own proprietary blends of plant-based sauces and shakes. In 2017, Burger Patch sparked a buzz around Sacramento with two wildly popular, one day pop-ups. These were the first in Sacramento to serve the Beyond Burger, with each event drawing hours-long lines and raising thousands of dollars for two charities close to their hearts: Sierra Donor Services and Food Literacy Center. Those pop-ups fueled a successful partnership between the Horns and Golden 1 Center. You can now find a special version of the Burger Patch menu at section 123 during Sacramento Kings games and most concerts. Just weeks after opening on K Street, Burger Patch continued to tap into the entertainment world, serving over 1,500 burgers in just three days at Napa’s BottleRock music festival. Burger Patch employees met and served the 54

up-and-coming band Midland. The band members were "blown away" by their burgers. In addition, Carlos Santana had his assistant bring him back a Burger Patch burger!

"The vision is all about creating a convenient and conscious food option for people who want to enjoy nostalgic taste made with modern ingredients," says Phil who grew up on three fast food meals a day as his single mom "worked two jobs to make ends meet." The menu is simple, as is the space itself. Inspired to equally serve the earth, animals and hungry customers, the husband and wife team chose to keep their footprint compact. The Burger Patch is located at the ground floor of the new 23&K mixed use, residential project. Their 750 sq. ft. home-base, with half a dozen stools lining the window bar also features curbside picnic table seating under the Sacramento trees.

Kings, decided to leave the NBA and focus solely on Burger Patch. “The timing was right to go all in on something that has a chance to impact our community in a way that ignites my passion,” said Phil.

Burger Patch is also committed to be a good community member. "A portion of every burger sold at the K Street location goes back to the community through various community partners in alignment with Burger Patch’s vision," explains Phil. The Horns choose charities that take care of the planet, animals, and the community such as, Sierra Donor Services, Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary and Front Street Animal Shelter.

The pair already have their eyes on a second location. Danea shared, “We cannot wait to expand on the success of our first location and become a cherished part of a new neighborhood.”

After opening, Phil, who had originally planned to keep his position with the

Danea is pulling double duty, participating in the restaurant’s recipe development and growth, as well as focusing on her PhD candidacy at UC Davis in agricultural and resource economics.

Within the first month of opening, Burger Patch recounted ways the restaurant had positively impacted its community including 1,265,000 mg of cholesterol avoided, 775,000 gallons of water saved, 500,000 sq. ft. of land preserved, 80,000 lbs. of greenhouse gases avoided, 750 lbs. of food waste composted and 315 animals saved.

Best Slavic Catering These two young women have been a part of the family business ever since they learned to walk. Both were involved in operations as they were growing up; they even helped their parents while going to college. In 2014, cancer unexpectedly claimed the life of their mother, Marina, who was the heart and soul of the company. Coping with this devastated tragedy, the family was faced with a huge challenge, whether to close down the business or find a way to restructure operations. Two brave girls, supported by their father, Igor, stepped in and took over the company. Not only did they manage to stay in business but they also brought it to a whole new

level, claiming the Best Catering Company Award in 2017. When asked what they like the most about being in business, the girls both replied that it is first of all a tribute to their mother. Citrus Plaza Catering had been the work of her life and the ladies are proud to carry on and expand on their mother’s dream. Stefaniya and Kristina Trach are two young sisters that run one of the most established and reputable family-owned and operated catering companies serving the RussianAmerican community of Northern California, Citrus Plaza Catering. 916-803-1504 citrusplazacafe@gmail.com
