publisher’s note

A

lovely young woman with piercing, grey eyes interrupted my blissful thoughts. “So, tell us how did this all begin?” This highly energetic, incredibly smart woman always knew how to start a good conversation. No wonder she held the position of an editor-in-chief. Her question made me forget about the mouth-watering meal and took my thoughts back 22 years, to a busy hallway at the JFK Airport. I remembered sitting still in a cold, uncomfortable, metal bench staring into space. I was tired, exhausted, and lost. A newly arrived immigrant, I just had flown to the US, leaving behind the world as I knew it. I had 20 dollars in my pocket, a bundle of luggage full of essential household goods and no idea of what to do next. I’d just left behind a promising job at the Ministry of Foreign Trade, a house and all of my friends and family. It was a leap of faith, a decision that’s coming from your guts, not your brain. It wasn’t an easy path. For the next few years, I was juggling two jobs while going to school full time. I opened my business just to find myself working 24/7 and barely breaking even at the end of the month. I kept pushing, one thing led to another, and today I head one of the largest media companies serving the Russianspeaking Americans in the US. I am blessed to work with an incredible group of people, each one of them being a master of their craft. I looked at them laughing and having a great time and realized that this would never have happened unless I took that “leap of faith” years ago. We live in a wonderful country where we can take chances and explore new opportunities. I encourage each of you to take advantage of that and never be afraid to fail. Rather, be afraid not to try.

It was a happy day at Russian American Media. My team had gathered around the dinner table celebrating our company’s 20th anniversary. I felt content looking at their happy faces as we shared a meal and a good laugh.

I am blessed with an amazing team of people, each of them unique and extremely talented in their own way.

BEAUTY UEEN WITH A BIG HEART

by Olga Garicichina

Some of my most boring interviews happen to be with the winners of beauty pageants. Most of the questions are predictable and the answers are cliché like, “I want to save the world and feed the hungry.” I can usually summarize them like this: “The conversation was nice but meaningless.” Meeting with Olga Sigmundson, the 19-year-old winner of Miss Russian California 2017, dispelled my pessimistic premonitions in the first five minutes. Rather, she was feminine, charming, positive, ambitious and talented. She won me over with her sincerity and positive outlook on the world. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Her Heritage Olga was born in the stunning city of Odessa, which even Ukrainians themselves call a “country within a country.” She spent her childhood on the shores of the Black Sea, taking in Odessa’s sense of humor, the local character and charm, and her favorite apple buns baked by her grandmother. At 8 years old, our beauty queen left her homeland and immigrated to the USA.

Her Cheerleader To Olga, her mom is her guiding star. When you see such a strong mother-daughter bond, your heart can’t help but melt at the sweet sight. Olga’s mom is her best friend, adviser and PR manager. This heart-toheart connection has helped Olga become a successful and self-sufficient girl who believes in herself and her abilities. She boldly strives towards her grand goals and plans with her mom supporting her through it all.

Her Aspirations The name "Olga" means “holy” which really fits our beauty queen. As a teen, she founded a company called “We Believe" with the mission of supporting and inspiring children through education and motivation. Olga used the scholarship funds she received for winning the pageant to visit her homeland and help children with cancer. She has also put together a series of master classes for kids in local schools and regional hospitals. Her visit attracted lots of media attention from local TV stations.

A FASHION STATEMENT WITH A CAUSE Raising funds for children in Ukraine was an ongoing challenge. It wasn’t that people refused to help but rather the fact that the amount collected was not enough to make a difference. Looking for a way to fund her charity projects, Olga launched “O’lala design,” her own clothing line which offers custom designer jackets detailed and embroidered by hand. Olga wants to use the proceeds from selling the jackets for charity. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

things YOU HAVE TO DO

in

oscow by Clayton Wood

A few years ago, I got the chance to see Russia for the first time. I explored a few of the rural parts of the country like the Caucasus and Grozny City, along with the large cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow. As an American without Russian heritage, it was a trip of a lifetime. So many differences, so many similarities.

So when I got the chance to go back this year, specifically to explore more of Moscow, I jumped at the chance. Since the weather was nice, it made the trip all the better. With no Russian language experience, I set off for five days in Moscow, curious to see if springtime in Moscow made the city different for a tourist. And it did. Moscow impressed me far beyond any other European city. It’s size is unlike western Europe and its architecture is intimidating. I felt a sense of something familiar to my country. For the length of the trip, I tried to identify what it was that reminded me of America in Moscow. Although I can’t quite explain it, some of my favorite things to do might shed some light on that familiar feeling. Here’s what you can’t miss in Moscow.

The food. My friend Vasil and I arrived exhausted from our flight to the wonderful concierge at the hotel, and quickly found what became my favorite restaurant in Moscow, Farsh. It’s a meat restaurant that serves better hamburgers than many places in America.

YOU HAVE TO GO THERE. In addition to having top notch food, the decor is stunning. It’s a place I want to stay and hang out. This place has all the chic style of the west, with a Russian twist.

Go to a museum. If you’re not brushed up on Soviet history, a museum can be a very interesting place to learn. This one is outside of Moscow, but it makes the list because of it’s unique history and beautiful art. The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg is one of the most lovely spots in the world. You walk through its corridors for hours admiring its wonderful art, and if you’re lucky, you might just get a view below of the cats. There’s a community of felines living beneath the museum along with caretakers in long winding corridors of rooms. Ask someone there about the history of the cats and they’ll tell you a very interesting story.

Go To Red Square. The main seat of the government is incredibly impressive. The entire block is surrounded by massive buildings, decorated unlike anything you’ve seen before. In good weather, this area can provide hours of sightseeing and it’s worth going during a trip to Moscow. Unless you are familiar with Russian architecture, this looks like something out of a fairy tale. I recommend staying somewhere near Red Square so you can visit it a number of times.

The Rooftop bar at the Ritz Carlton.

Bike sharing in Gorky Park.

I went here on a weeknight just to check it out after seeing it recommended online, and wasn’t ready for what I got. Just before dark, I walked onto the rooftop area where a live guitarist was playing and singing, and a block away, is a stunning view of Red Square. It was incredible. I came back again after that night to have drinks from the rooftop bar.

A pro tourist tip for Moscow is the bike sharing stations they have all throughout the inner ring of the city. You can pay a small fare to take these bikes out of their station and ride them wherever you like. On a warm spring or summer day, the best place is Gorky Park, a winding green area that follows the river through the center of the city. This is one of my favorite ways to see a new city.

Walk through Bolshoi Theatre. Go when the theatre is letting out, or better yet, go to a play there. I didn’t look early enough to buy a ticket to an event there, but this famous theatre is a sight to behold just from walking around the outside at sunset.

Go to the White Rabbit. This famous Moscow fine dining location might be tough to get into, but it’s worth the wait and the price. Since the chef knew we were coming, he made a special dinner, and fed us vodka shots all night. This restaurant is like no other. It’s a must see for Moscow. I can’t wait to go back to Moscow again whenever I can get the chance. This unexplored city is a magical place to spend time. There are probably dozens of areas in Moscow I could explore and never finish. But for now, these ‘must-see’ places are a good start.

FOR SOME YEARS NOW, AMERICA HAS BEEN THE WORLD LEADER IN THE USE OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND, ACCORDING TO 2016 STATISTICS, EVERY 10TH U.S. RESIDENT TAKES ANTIDEPRESSANTS.

In your opinion, why is it especially hard for people to accept the first of the six fundamental rules? The thing that prevents us from doing what we want to do is fear. It is rooted back in our childhood. "Be like everybody else, don't stand out, modesty is the best policy..." - these phrases have been drilled into our heads since childhood. Such an upbringing gives birth to a huge number of issues that, in adult life, lead to a person who cannot relax psychologically and who is in a state of permanent tension. A whole generation has grown up being nervous, unsatisfied and unhappy with something constantly eating at them. Mentally, we are either in the past or in the future, but never in the present. And the position of "doing only what you want" is associated in our minds with selfishness, when, in fact, it is exactly what allows a person to enjoy oneself and life in general.

Often in your broadcasts, you say that children should be allowed to make choices, should be given an allowance, and that you are absolutely against physical punishment. Why are those important?

With what do you connect such high consumption rates?

Do you know that 80% of a person's character is formed before the age of five? The kind of childhood one has is very important for the formation of a mentally healthy person. I think that American parenting in this respect is quite free, and that's good. In America, children get a say. They are asked at an early age what they want for breakfast, given pocket money, their opinions have value. While in Russia, for example, a law was recently signed on the decriminalization of physical abuse at home. Under the new law, beating a wife or children will only be punishable by a fine. In America, one can expect a jail sentence for these offenses. In the United States, there is a respect for children as individuals. This is very important for normal development. But, it should be immediately noted that, even after reading 1,000 books on good parenting, you will not become good parents. First of all, it is necessary to stop being neurotic, that is, to cure your nervous system. Then your children will generally grow up in an atmosphere of love, mutual respect and understanding.

I associate this with the American workaholic and consumer mentality. On the one hand, it’s good and it stimulates people to grow and develop. On the other hand, the idea of constantly working is also neurotic; it results in breakdowns and leads to depression. Many Europeans cannot stand living in the U.S. for this very reason. It is a different pace of life, a different work capacity. I have a friend, a very famous animator, who worked in some of the largest companies such as Citibank, Delta, etc. He once said to me, "When I am in Europe or Russia, I feel famous and important. But when I come to the USA, I am grouped with four Hindus, five Chinese, three Brazilians and fifteen people from Eastern Europe. And they are all the best in their field." So, the competition in the States is enormous, hence the level of stress and depression is very high. People are led to believe they have to constantly keep pedaling, otherwise they won’t make it.

ACCORDING TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY, 80% OF MILLENNIALS WANT TO BE RICH, AND EVERY SECOND MILLENNIAL SURVEYED WANTS TO BE FAMOUS.

Do you think a person can be happy regardless of external conditions and does getting millions guarantee happiness? I once met a girl in India who was a downshifter. Downshifters are people who do not work at all or work only to have enough money to pay rent and to meet their basic needs. Anyway, she compared me to her father, who was a successful businessman and worked 24/7. It made me think. The next day during a conversation with her, I said, “I’m not like your father, but not like you, either. There is one more like me: Paul McCartney. From childhood, he loved to sing songs and sang himself up to 2 billion dollars. And I love psychology, so I’m pretty successful in this area. “ Over the years of my consulting practice, I’ve seen thousands of people, and, believe me, money does not make a person happier. If a person defines happiness like this: “I will be happy when I get married, when I change jobs, earn a million, fly to the Maldives, etc.,” then such a person is unlikely to ever be happy.

What advice would you give our readers to help them be happy and fully enjoy life? If you want to start enjoying life you must stop being afraid to live. You must stop being afraid of being alone. Stop being afraid of losing work and money. Stop feeding your fears and you will begin to live a real life!

QUOTES

A PERSON CAN BE HAPPY HERE AND NOW, AND MY SIX RULES CAN HELP IN THIS REGARD.

“An emotionally healthy woman does not want to get married. She wants to love, live together, have children and only then get married.” “Loneliness is not the lack of love around you. It's the lack of interest in yourself, from childhood on.” “Balanced people always put themselves first, while neurotics choose relationships to their own detriment.” “When flight attendants brief you on the safety rules, do you remember what they say about the oxygen masks? "If you travel with a child, put a mask on yourself first, then on your child." That's the trick. You can’t help the child while remaining an absolute nutcase yourself. It doesn't work that way. If you want your child to be fine, do something first about your own head.” “If you don't like the way a man behaves, do not look for excuses for his behavior.”

You know those people that just LOVE to exercise? It’s 5AM and they are already working up a sweat? Yeah, I hate those types of people! While they are on their second set of squats, I am still snoozing my alarm. Now don’t get me wrong, I actually really enjoy exercise. However, I have realized that I enjoy working out when I don’t know that I am working out. Is that even possible? Yes, it is! I have rounded up the best physical activities to get you in shape just in time for the holidays!

WORKOUTS A fun way to get in shape! by Margret Okunev

Skyrobics

If you are anything like me then you are always participating in activities that make you feel like a kid again. Well this is the workout for you! Seriously, who doesn’t love to jump on trampolines for an hour? You will focus on core exercise and strength building.

Dance

Have you ever gone dancing with the girls and woke up the next morning feeling like you ran a marathon? Same! Your legs will look amazing after dancing in those four inch heels. Of course, if you don’t have the moves, you can always take a class: Swing, hip hop, Zumba, or anything to elevate that heart rate and get your body moving.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is another great way to get a good workout in while having a blast! There are many styles of Rock Climbing indoor and outdoor. Either way, your arms will look nice and toned after reaching that 30-foot wall.

Hiking

I am a sucker for a hike that ends with a killer view. Not only are you breathing in fresh air, you also get to enjoy the beauty of nature (hopefully) while getting a full body workout.

SurfSET

You can thank Shark Tank for this next workout. This is a way to take your yoga class to the next level. SurfSET allows you to get your cardio in along with muscle building. You are poised on a board balanced on three stability balls. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

What’s Trending Now Starbucks - the healthy way Ditch the Whipped Cream - I know it's delicious but you don't need it! Asking for no whip is one of the easiest ways to shed some calories. Go "light" or "skinny" - Most drinks can be ordered light or skinny. You'll get sugar-free syrup, nonfat milk and no whipped cream!

Living a healthy lifestyle is important. If you are not a fan of the gym than these options are a great start to getting in shape. The holidays are just around the corner and if you start now, you can eat a little extra pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. And who doesn’t love pie?

Go Nonfat or Soy - To scrap even more calories, switch out your milks. If you are a fan of dairy, try Nonfat milk. If dairy is not your friend, try Soy, Almond or even Coconut milk! Downsize - I know you probably need the caffeine but choosing a Tall or Grande over a Venti really cuts down the calories. If you need the extra boost, just order an extra shot instead! THE

racing queen FROM UKRAINE

by Jonathon Tepes Sharkey

Before becoming a racer, Oksana worked in the medical field. She earned an RN degree from Ternopil State Medical University and passed her Florida RN test after immigrating to the US. Oksana worked at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida and became passionate about helping people affected by this disease.

Besides being an RN, Oksana is the owner of the Championship Racing Team – American Ukrainian Racing (AUR), as well as one of the team’s drivers. She races with, and sometimes against her husband, Jonathon, who is the lead driver. Oksana began her racing journey in the US at Andersen Race Park in Palmetto, Florida. Andersen is part of the Mazda Road to Indy Series. Her very first race in a TaG 125 Kart at Showtime Speedway in Pinellas Park, FL was victorious! Her racing

abilities caught the attention of Ambassador Racing Track Owner and Race Director Ray Garcia. Garcia wrote a letter of recommendation to NASCAR’s Licensing Committee for Oksana to get her NASCAR Pro License. During this past Summer, Oksana competed and practiced at many tracks in Florida. In August, at Bushnell Motorsports Park, Oksana defeated her husband, Jonathon, during a race. In October, she attacked the famed Sebring International Raceway in a F2000 Racing Car.

Oksana is not the fastest racer on the track but she is extremely consistent. This is a good quality to have for endurance racing events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. She avoids accidents and keeps all four wheels on the track. To win a race, your car must be in good condition and running on the last lap. A German based racing team has invited Oksana to compete with them in 2018 in the ADAC GT Masters Series in Europe. Presently, Oksana is in discussions with NASCAR to race in their European Series.

Motorsports is known as a male dominated sport, with very few exceptions. In the NHRA, you have the Force Sisters (Brittany and Courtney) defeating male racers on a regular basis.

O K S A N A Shavaryn-Sharkey Oksana is from a small Village by Ternopil, Ukraine. She is planning to make history as not only the first Female Soviet Born Driver to race at Le Mans, but, the first ever Ukrainian to race there.

Now, from Ukraine, a female team owner and racer is working her way up the racing ladder to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Never has a Soviet Born Female competed at the famed Le Mans track. That is about to change.

The Goal Oksana’s dream is to use the proceeds from racing to build a state-of-the-art Cancer Center in her hometown Ternopil, where Ukrainians can receive first rate cancer treatment for free. Her ambitious goal caught the attention of some influential people. She was invited to meet and discuss her racing and philanthropic plans with the Mayor of Ternopil, Serhiy Nadal, and secured support and a donation from the former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush. «Medical profession is a feat that requires dedication, purity of soul and purity of thoughts. Not everybody is able for it», — said a remarkable writer and zemsky doctor Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.

H GHER CALLING People of this profession, indeed, are amazing, because few of us are able to follow their occupation with full dedication

What does it mean to be a good doctor, how does pediatrics in the United States differ from in the post-Soviet countries, and what motivates people in this field? We addressed these questions to a wonderful pediatrician Tatiana Kovalenko, who works at Mercy Medical Group where she’s received excellent feedback on her practice.

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Tatiana, every doctor has his or her own path to medicine. What is yours? It's hard to say how I got an idea to become a doctor in my family of engineers, construction workers and professors in technical sciences. As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a doctor. My parents were not happy with my choice, suggesting that I ought to follow their engineering and economic path, but they did not dissuade me. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

I followed the traditional way: medical institute, internship, and worked as a pediatrician. Arriving in the U.S., I decided not to change my profession. I once again passed the exams, completed residency and began working as a doctor in Cleveland, Ohio. Now I'm happy to continue in sunny California. Hippocrates once said: "The doctor is a philosopher, because there is no big difference between wisdom and medicine." Is this true?

I think wisdom is knowledge multiplied by experience. Wisdom supposes not only a knowledge of things, but also some caution in their use. In medicine, as well, you use knowledge, your own and others with caution: "Do no harm." What qualities distinguish a doctor with God-given talent and a doctor about whom they say "God forbid"? A doctor, as a good representative of the profession, is distinguished

Children sometimes give out such pearls, which you would never think up. For example, a kid asked:

from others by obligatory feeling of love for the chosen occupation. You cannot treat children without love for them. For a real doctor, feelings of mercy, amiability, compassion and, of course, a sense of humor are obligatory. Children sometimes give out such pearls, which you would never think up. For example, a kid asked: "Who made you dimples on your cheek? I want some too." It's no secret that methods and approaches to treatment in the U.S. and countries of the former USSR are different. What knowledge acquired during study and work in Ukrainian medicine was useful, and what had to be learned? In Ukraine, I received basic academic knowledge. And in the United States, I have studied and used in practice ultramodern methods of applied medicine. Here we use the latest hardware diagnostics that allow quick identification of a problem and disease. Rehabilitation is at the highest level. I think I will not be mistaken if I say that America has the best medicine in the world!

Tell me, who is easier to work with for you: kids or teenagers? I really like to work with kids. My grandmother always said that they are innocent earthly angels. They are the most touching and sincere patients, very inquisitive. Although it's also interesting to work with teenagers. They already have mature personalities, with their own worldview and with full confidence in their own rightness. As long as you find common topics and show teens that you respect and try to understand them, a good relationship will be established. Is it true that all children are afraid of people wearing white coats? When it comes to the fears of patients, I'm convinced that it's not just a matter of a white coat. Kids feel when a doctor is nervous or upset. Therefore, when I'm at work, I put my bad mood in a pocket and always smile. Kindness and calmness of the doctor help the child to overcome any fears.

Did you know? Based on my practice, the most common disease among children in the United States is a viral infection. Often, children also suffer from ear diseases, sinusitis, or an infection of the urinary tract. That's why I want to stress the importance of preventive examinations for children. Pediatricians check hearing, vision, measure blood pressure and give parents advice on the upbringing of their child and a healthy diet. In America, educational medicine is very developed: doctors try to teach parents how to reduce the risk of common diseases. Most diseases can be identified at an early stage. Make sure to take your child to a pediatrician at least once a year.

ADVICE FOR YOUNG PARENTS Being a parent is the most difficult profession in the world: 24 hours a day, yearround without days off, holidays and breaks. Best advice? Love your child. Do not regret your time with them. Go for walks and play with your kids. Do not overfeed them. Do not wrap up your baby too tightly. Encourage good behavior and success of your child. Kids want to attract your attention; sometimes even with bad behavior. Find a good pediatrician and let them help you raise a healthy child.

Natasha Bugriyeva “My job fulfills me. This work takes me through a whole spectrum of emotions and feelings. It gets me excited, challenged, afraid, happy, stressed, and inspired. I feel all that and more, but I never feel bored. Most importantly, I feel in control of everything that I get to do, and that makes me happy.”

Which qualities most contributed to your success? Everyone says, “Find your passion” but that’s easier said than done. You have to be truly enthusiastic about what you do to get through the highs and lows in your business or career. If you are doing something that you absolutely love, that love will fuel you and give you purpose. I also believe that success has nothing to do with what you gain in life; it is rather related to what you give to others. I get incomparable pleasure helping people in my business. That inspires me to grow and further develop my company.

What do you enjoy spending money on? I am a happy mother of three adorable children and I love to please them, travel together and invest in their future. My family is my strength and my weakness.

BEING A WOMAN IN BUSINESS IS: GREAT because I have a great support from my family. I am extremely grateful to my dear husband, Vitaliy Bugriev, who is always there for me. He cheers me up, supports me and I feel protected with him, no matter what happens. CHALLENGING because running your own business requires a lot of time. The biggest challenge for me is to find the right balance between work and family. Being a business owner, I value every precious second spent with our children and I know they value it too. For this life, I am thankful.

“Before all else, I see my job as an opportunity to do something bigger than myself, something useful that will help people and have social impact.”

What is success to you? Success is a long journey with ups and downs. The main trait that sets winners apart is endurance. Winners simply keep going when others give up. Of course, talent, creativity, education and communication skills are critical, but I think that the most important quality of a winner is the desire to win. As actor Will Smith put it, “You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me, you might be all of those things. You got it on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there are two things: You’re getting off first, or I’m going to die. It’s that simple.”

Why do you love your career? It makes me happy. I always learn something new, meet interesting people and solve challenging problems. I also truly enjoy seeing ideas transform into products, something real and tangible. I have been working since I was seventeen years old. Work is an integral part of my life and a form of social realization. One of the greatest pleasures for me is a sense of work well-done at the end of the day as I’m leaving the office. CONTACT INFO:

SKYLINE DENTAL STUDIO

Dr. Tatyana Pihur, DMD Why do you love your career?

“People may not realize that there is a lot of creativity involved in dentistry. On some levels, it’s very pragmatic and scientific, but the actual work is like carving or sculpting. It is an art. To me, seeing immediate results of my hard work gives me a great sense of accomplishment and motivates me to create more. “

The joy of changing a person`s life by giving him or her a beautiful smile cannot be measured. The satisfaction of restoring a person`s teeth so they can enjoy food again is worth more than gold. The opportunity to relieve pain and suffering is a rare privilege. I just can’t imagine doing anything other than dentistry. My patient’s appreciation of being well cared for is evident in their smiles, hugs, tears of happiness, and positive feedback. That is priceless.

What do you enjoy in life? I love to travel to remote parts of the world and learn about new countries, people and cultures. These experiences give me perspective and make me feel grateful for everything and everyone in my life. Also, I am involved in charity dental work abroad and I am a member of the International Medical Relief Program. Winston Churchill said, that “we make a living by what we get… but we make a life by what we give!” I agree with him. That is why I am always excited to travel to underdeveloped countries all over the world and provide dental services for patients who have never had dental care before. My next trip will be this summer to Rwanda and Kenya.

In 2014, cancer unexpectedly claimed the life of their mother, Marina, who was the heart and soul of the company. Coping with this devastated tragedy, the family was faced with a huge challenge, whether to close down the business or find a way to restructure operations. Two brave girls, supported by their father, Igor, stepped in and took over the company. Not only did they manage to stay in business but they also brought it to a whole new level, claiming the Best Catering Company Award in 2017. When asked what they like the most about being in business, the girls both replied that it is first of all a tribute to their mother. Citrus Plaza Catering had been the work of her life and the ladies are proud to carry on and expand on their mother’s dream.

OLHA MELOKHINA PHOTOGRAPHY

Olha Melokhina Which qualities most contributed to your success?

Olha discovered photography back in college and realized that the camera allows her to express her emotions and transform her vision into a form of visual art. In 2003, she turned a beloved hobby into a paying job. She is now a well-known commercial, fashion and wedding photographer who shoots for a number of elite magazines, events and fashion shows.

Determination, hard work and the fact that I love my job! This inspires me to perfect my technique and keep up with developing trends in my industry.

What is your greatest passion? Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world. I agree with this saying. Buying new shoes is definitely my passion along with buying new photography equipment; although the latter is a very expensive hobby.

What do you enjoy spending money on? I absolutely love to travel! Travel expenses are the only ones that actually make you richer.

Why do you love your career? It challenges me to be better and learn new things. It also allows me to meet lots of new people and get positive vibes. I get to shoot beautiful scenery, family celebrations and cheerful people all these energize and inspire me.

BEING A WOMAN IN BUSINESS IS: GREAT because I get to meet lots of interesting people, do what I love for a living and realize myself as an artist. CHALLENGING since my work schedule is inconsistent and gets pretty hectic. It is also a very expensive field. Photography equipment is incredibly pricey. When did you know you wanted to become a lawyer?

Believe it or not, when I was a kid I was deciding between becoming an artist (I was pretty good at reading poetry) or a lawyer. My Grandmother watched the soap opera Santa Barbara religiously, so I watched it too. Mason Capwell, one of the main characters, was a great lawyer and a nice guy. That inspired me to become a lawyer. At that time, law was a respected, conservative profession and I had no interest in more fundamental sciences like math or physics. Ironically, I finished school with advanced learning in physics and mathematics

I started as a regular corporate lawyer. Soon I realized how boring that was and became interested in a very new area of expertise — Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. This was at the beginning of this industry, so our law firm was a pioneer in this market in Moscow, which made us known as the leader in climate change law in Russia.

What law firm did you work for in Russia?

What’s your specialty?

I worked in the Moscow office of one of the major international law firms, Baker McKenzie for 11 years. I started from the very bottom of the career ladder and left them when I reached one of the top positions. After I left them, I partnered with a friend of mine from Moscow State University to establish our own boutique law firm, Causa Privata. It’s still active and operating today.

I started as a regular corporate and M&A expert. Soon I realized how boring that was and became interested in a very new area of expertise, Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. This was at the beginning of this industry, and the field looked like a business opportunity. In Russia, no one thought this could turn into a viable business though. But through the support of my colleague and friend, Max Gutbrod (who still works at Baker McKenzie), I managed to establish and make this unique practice profitable. We are the pioneers in this market in Moscow, which allowed Baker McKenzie to become known as the leader in climate change law in Russia. I’m proud to have initiated this wonderful focus in our country. I’m especially proud to fight for our planet and against the global threats we face in the environment.

How about your family, what do they think of you moving your company to the US?

They were shocked! Changing one law firm for another is understandable, but changing from one country to another is unusual, but, they got used to it soon. They know that the winds of change sometimes takes me to faraway places. I am very thankful for their support. It is important for anyone who starts a new chapter in life.

What was the scariest thing about starting your own business?

For LeadHit, our major fear was “What if our idea has no unique approach?” But as one of my partners, Nick Nikitin (a great visionary and our tech-related team lead), said - “our business is about something bigger than just money, it is about helping retail stores respect their customers more”, and I can’t agree more.

What’s different about the business culture in the US?

The difference is based on the mentality and the history of business culture in general. In Europe it is more about establishing a relationship with a particular individual and through that, you get access to business. In US culture, it’s much more straight to the point. - “What results do I get and how much should I pay?” I love this approach, because for each of those questions we have examples which are a pain in the ass for our competitors.

What’s LeadHit?

Today for whatever reason, respect is something that has left our lives - everybody is in a hurry - even retailers behave as if they have to interact with masses, not individuals. That’s why our email inboxes are full of pointless emails which contain anything but what we really need. LeadHit helps to bring a tailored marketing approach to each e-commerce website visitor - and it works great.

LeadHit is a company that brings customized e-commerce experience to consumers. It is not so much about the technology and computer sciences, it is more about the ideology, bringing real value to both online retailers and their customers.

What’s the best thing you like about California? How does LeadHit help people in the e-commerce industry?

I love the weather! Especially taking into account the fact that I moved to California during fall in Russia - not the nicest season. And yes, go Giants! LeadHit is not just a behavior technology-based platform. It is an instrument that both helps businesses show their gratitude to their customers, and motivates the customers to purchase from businesses that really value them. It automates the process of understanding real interests of each visitor, analyzes it and helps the customers decide what to purchase.

Who’s the most inspiring figure to you?

I’d say it’s Ikarus - he had a dream, and though he failed to reach it, he did his best.

A JOB IS MORE THAN JUST A WORKPLACE

onsidering the fact that people spend so much of their lives at work, it makes sense that a job is more than just a workspace; it can forge an extraordinarily close-knit group of people who inhabit not only a job but a team. I consider myself very lucky to be a member of an amazing workplace team—a place where I am a vital part of the community, where everyone contributes, and where we resemble a family. Hello, my name is Oksana Filatov, and I am a school office manager for Community Outreach Academy (COA). I have been a part of this outstanding organization from the beginning, but it has not always been easy; the road to success has been long and hard. In 2001, when we had only a small number of students, faculty, and limited resources, we had to compromise and look for ways to improvise to survive. Over time, slowly and surely, we blossomed into one of the best charter schools in the Sacramento area. Not only is our school the best place for students, it is also the best place to work. In fact, our charter organization, Gateway Community Charters (GCC), is proud to have been nominated as one of the Best Places to Work in Sacramento by the Sacramento Business Journal, and we took second place in the Best Places to Work in Sacramento awards in 2017. Also in 2017, Community Outreach

Academy received the Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School Award. We have been recognized multiple times by the Russian American Media (RAM) as the Best of the Best in Education—and for good reason. Working at COA feels like working with my family in the finest imaginable way; we all support each other, working together toward creating a better tomorrow. COA is a place where everyone shares the same vision and is dedicated to the same mission. This facilitates a wonderful environment where everybody is there for one another. One of our school’s slogans is “Capturing Kids’ Hearts,” and I truly believe that we are making a difference in the lives of our students by serving their needs every day. I am proud to lead our professional clerical team and to be a part of this organization that leads with its whole heart. Our professional clerical team is made up of dedicated women who sacrifice to make our school a better place. We are a team of people who juggle careers and families, continuously giving more than 100% because we believe in a better and more successful future. I am proud of my team; we are all different, but our common goal is to serve the youth of our community. Our goal, furthermore, is to go above and beyond what we have already achieved, and we are able to look back at our

beginnings as a reminder that anything is possible. We attribute our remarkable success to the families and community that make up our school, as well as our leader and school principal, Larissa Gonchar, who was recognized as a Silver Star Recipient by the Association of California School Administrators. Larissa’s example and effort have helped to make change and growth possible. Caring deeply for our students, she inspires all those around her and dedicates herself fully to achieving greatness, going above and beyond. Our students, however, are at the heart of our school. We are able to make things work on a daily basis because our students give us the courage and faith to make things possible. As much as our school’s success is due to our students and community, it is also thanks to the teachers and staff members who tirelessly work behind the scenes. The joy of seeing smiles light the faces of our students motivates us, which allows us to stride toward a greater future. Whatever it takes, our kids are worth it!

Smile!

After years of trying to get the perfect smile that I envisioned, I found Dr. Crooks and her team. I chose her practice because of the many recommendations, but I stayed because I saw her passion for dentistry. When I decided to follow through with veneers, Dr. Crooks talked me through the entire process and what would be expected. I was nervous but she made me feel comfortable and excited! Dr. Crooks and her staff exceeded all my expectations! The confidence Dr. Crooks gave me is something I can’t thank her enough for. Dr. Crooks is a true artist and perfectionist, and it is apparent after seeing results!

Finding credit and financing options for your business About one in three business owners use their own funds or personal credit for their business, according to a recent Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index survey. Yet as a business seeks to grow, obtaining business credit is essential and may help finance purchases, build a credit history, supplement cash flow, and preserve savings.

About one in three business owners use their own funds or personal credit for their business. So how do you choose the most suitable credit option for your business? The type of business credit you may need depends on your business goals and how much funding you need. Following are several common credit needs, and options available to address each one: Need a way to pay for everyday business expenses? When looking for a convenient way to pay for everyday business expenses and a smart alternative to cash, checks, and personal credit cards, business credit cards may be a good option. With a business credit card, it may be easier to separate your business from personal expenses and immediately pay for day to day business expenses. Need to make large seasonal purchases or cover payroll? Nearly every small business will face a time when it needs more cash than it has on hand. A business line of credit may provide fast, easy access to cash (which can bridge gaps in cash flow) and help supplement cash flow for business expansion, taxes, insurance, or other expenses.

Want to expand your business or make a large equipment or vehicle purchase? For a specific business need, business term or equipment loans should be considered. Loans give businesses immediate access to funds and are ideal for business owners who want a flexible way to get a lump sum at a fixed or variable interest rate for a fixed period of time. There are many types of loans, including unsecured loans, secured equipment loans, real estate loans, and vehicle loans, and rates and terms vary. When evaluating lending options, you should also consider an SBA loan. Through government-guaranteed SBA loans, financial institutions are able to extend financing to a segment of creditworthy small business owners who may not be able to obtain a conventional loan or loan terms that meet their business needs. Business owners who are looking to buy real estate, acquire a new business, purchase equipment, fund business expansion, make leasehold improvements, or fund construction may find that an SBA loan offers more flexible terms than a conventional loan. SBA products include the SBA Express line of credit, and SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 term loans. As business owners consider their credit options, they should consult with a banker to help determine the best option to meet the specific needs of their business. America’s #1 Small Business Lender and #1 SBA Lender*

* Wells Fargo is America’s #1 lender (Community Reinvestment Act government data, 2002 – 2015). * Wells Fargo is America’s #1 SBA 7(a) lender by both units and dollars (U.S. Small Business Administration data, federal fiscal year 2016). All credit decisions subject to credit approval. For SBA loan products, determination of SBA eligibility by the Wells Fargo SBA Lending Group is also required. © 2017 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.
