I am deeply convinced that we only grow when we try, learn, or experience something new. My eight-year old daughter Nicky gave me one of the best personal growth lessons I ever had.
YOUR WAY
We were on a family vacation in Hawaii. I decided to take on paddle boarding and rented a stand-up board for an hour. It was supposed to be the easiest thing to learn; all I had to do is keep my balance while standing on a thick foam board and propelling myself with a paddle. Nonetheless, I spent most of the hour trying not to fall which still ended with me smashing into the water most of the time. It was still a fun experience especially given that my wife took a dozen of hilarious photos of me falling.
The next day, I decided to polish my skills and do it again. This time around I took my eight-year old daughter with me. Before I was even done explaining to her how it’s done, she popped up on the board like a cork. I couldn't believe how easy she got it! When it was about time to turn the board in I asked her to fall into the water once for a funny picture. She looked at me completely confused and asked, "How do I fall?" That's when I realized why Nicky was so much more successful than me at learning how to paddle board. She was not afraid to fall! She was so consumed with learning how to stand that falling didn't even cross her mind. Fear of failing is what keeps us from succeeding most of the time. Basketball legend Michael Jordan once said, "Don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try." MJ was right, in the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take. photos by: Igor Ilyenko | CoolStyle.us

TO KNOW The rainforest is the most enchanting in the springtime, when mosses and ferns look especially lush following the rainy season.
Hoh is one of a few remaining temperate rainforests in the United States. It gets from 12 to 14 feet of rain per year which turns the forest into a fantasy green land with giant trees covered in dense moss beards and fern blankets. Several easy hikes start at the Hoh visitor center.

Alex began his journey in the US 25 years ago, with 15 months spent in federal prison. A victim of political intrigues, Alex went through six federal and immigration court hearings where he was representing himself as no lawyer was willing to take his case. He won the case and was granted political asylum and compensation in the amount of $160,000! This is just a small fraction of Alex’s story which resembles a TV Show where each new episode gets more exciting.

At the age of 20, back in Russia, he founded a construction company that employed over 600 people. Five years later he was running Russian Exchange Bank, a financial institution that carried out roughly half of Russia’s foreign currency transactions. He was also directly involved in President Boris Yeltsin’s political campaign while his finance and construction empire was worth $300,000,000. Until the day he was held hostage by the KGB and was lucky to be left alive.

You once said that for a happy life a million dollars is enough, everything above that is just a sheer sport. You are worth way over a million dollars, if it’s not money, them what motivates you? Over the last 20 years of doing business in the US I’ve managed to grow a successful company, make a name for myself, and build exceptional clientele. However, all this success still can’t equate to, let’s say Google, which conquered the entire world market. I am the kind of person who needs to keep moving and growing. I tried slowing down once and enjoy a simple life. But sipping coffee while enjoying the view of the Swiss Alps just made me feel like a senior, so I went back to doing business.

Transparent Business is a cloud-based platform utilized in 98 countries across the globe. It gained attention of major-league players such as the US government, the United Nations, and the countries of the Arab world.
Alex, you founded KMGi Group in New York in 1997. By 2003 your company employed 200 people and had an office in the Empire State Building. By 2012, your software TransparentBusiness received the PC Magazine Rising Star Award as the best cloud computing solution for enterprises. How did the concept of TransparentBusiness evolve? We had originally developed this program for our own needs, and we have been using this technology for seven years. Then, Citi Bank noticed our innovation and invited us to take part in the new and advanced technologies competition held by the Citi Group. A year ago we won the Top Business Management Solutions award which tremendously increased the demand for our software. What’s the main competitive advantage of your software? TransparentBusiness allows employers to monitor activity and productivity of remote workforce. The program provides real-time report on the status, cost, and progress of any ongoing projects. It captures employees’ computer activity and tracks the time spent on each specific task, allocating costs along the way.

The topic of immigration and border control has been under active discussion. The debate is fierce. What is your position on this issue? People can have different opinions on immigration policy; I respect that. What makes me sad is when immigrants oppose immigration and resent immigrants in general. TO HELP YOUR KIDS Make Healthy Choices
1 2 3
by Elizabeth Almonte
Brambila has been practicing and coaching healthy lifestyle since 2005. Brambila has a degree from California State University, Stanislaus and owns Custom Fitness, an elite private health and fitness studio in Sacramento. He trains over 150 students, helping them achieve their health goals by changing their diet, mindset, and lifestyle.
4 5 6 7
Kids and healthy choices don’t always go hand in hand, and that’s a fact. I myself, remember sitting at the dinner table for hours as a child, pushing my plate of greens as far away from me as possible, begging my mom to spare me the unpleasant experience of eating anything that wasn’t fried in oil or filled with sugar. Maintaining a nutritional and physical balance in a child’s lifestyle is one of the biggest challenges of parenthood. Most kids will choose candy and donuts over spinach and broccoli in a heartbeat.
Here are a few tips to help you inspire your kids make healthy choices from a nutrition expert, an elite private fitness trainer, and a parent of two, Hugo Brambila. Atop of being a health and fitness coach, Brambila is also a parent. Being a dad to his four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, Josie and Javier, has taught Hugo the importance of introducing a healthy lifestyle early on in life. “The most important thing,” Brambila says, “is to LEAD BY EXAMPLE.” Children will never learn if they are only given directions with no example to follow. “Sometimes I’ll see my kids doing lunges and squats around the house instead of walking or playing around.” Says Hugo. “They grow up watching me work out and being active, so they do the same because that’s what they’ve seen from a very young age.” Proper nutrition is the next big challenge of parenthood. “Make sure to TRY DIFFERENT FOODS with your child rather than giving your child the foods you want them to try.” Also, don’t create any special meals for your kids. It’s a very restaraunt-style thing to do. Typically, an adult menu will have healthier choices, while kid’s menus are limited to poor options like pizza or mac & cheese. Don’t show your children that it’s ok to eat less healthy only because they are young. Serve them the same things you cook for yourself. Another great strategy to get children to eat healthy is to LET THEM CHOOSE their own veggies. Doing this allows them to make healthy choices while giving them some freedom. HAVE THEM COOK with you as well; the more involved they are in preparation of their food, the more interested they’ll be in eating it.
On the flip side, there is also the FITNESS ASPECT OF HEALTH. Once again, try leading by example. Instead of turning off the TV and sending your kids outside, go outside with them. The more time you spend playing or doing sports together, the more your kids will learn what they like and dislike. Help them find their passion and discover the fun of being active. As your kids develop their own physical interests, GET THEM MORE INVOLVED. Enroll them in a club or a sports team and give them a sense of responsibility. Lastly, DON’T FORCE ANYTHING on your kids. Just because you loved playing baseball when you were a kid doesn’t mean your child also has to. Let your children try different things and choose for themselves what they like. When children like what they are doing, they are willing to work harder. I’m not yet a parent, but my conversation with Hugo helped me understand why my parents did what they did, and still continue to do for my well-being. It is natural for parents to try being involved in every aspect of their children’s lives. There is nothing a good parent cares more about than their kids. As Brambila mentioned, the best way to influence children is to lead by example and the best time to do so is while they are still young. As children grow up, more and more of their choices will be decided by them and not by the parents. I’m a teenager so that I know this first-hand.
Monkey see, monkey do. This is the simple truth about how kids learn. Next time you see your child eating junk and being lazy, get them up and take them outside with you. Don’t just give them an apple, eat an apple yourself. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

LYANA Zilbermints
On top of balancing an engaging career with a beautiful family, this young woman is also a title holder of two prestigious beauty pageants, Miss Russian San Francisco and Miss Russian California, where she claimed first and second place respectively. You could say Ulyana is living the dream, but it was a long way that got her there. Here is Ulyana’s story in her own words.
When I was a little girl my friends called me "Little Miss Sunshine." I loved being around people, so at the age of 12 years I decided to become a journalist and I began writing for a teenage magazine. I was scared and uncertain of whether I could write at all, but nothing could stop me from trying. As early as 12, my personality and positive energy were the key to continuously moving forward and improving. Combined with my love for people, this energy and determination helped me write countless articles, run a column about the local circus, and interview travelling artists and acrobats. A year later, I worked with a group of friends to create our own TV program, we were real entrepreneurs! Working from the producer’s RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
apartment, we came up with scripts, interviews, and events. This was an incredible experience that helped me learn how to screen-write, act, host, produce, and edit videos. It all changed at the age of 16 when I had to move away with my family, leaving behind love, friendships, and the perfect weather. I found myself living in a cold, grey, and small town a few hours away from St. Petersburg. Lost and alone, I succumbed into a deep depression. It felt like I lost my entire world! That’s when I decided that I will find a way to make my life great again. Passing the toughest competition, I got accepted to the St. Petersburg State University. I moved back to St. Petersburg and began materializing my dreams.

“Being a title holder for Miss Russian San Francisco is a magical experience! It’s a tribute to beauty, love, and Russian culture.”
Balancing Act of a Golden Girl
To support myself through college I got a job at a TV station and auditioned with a large Movie Studio, ending up with credits in over ten movies! At the same time, I was launching my modeling career with photoshoot gigs for salons, magazines, and more. However, despite all my creative success, I was missing love and felt just as alone in the big city as I previously did in the suburbs. One New Year’s Eve, after a heartbreaking breakup, I started reflecting on my life and thinking of where I wanted to go next. Shooting for the stars, I wrote in my notebook, “I want to be married and live in California.” It was ambitious and completely crazy. I closed the notebook and forgot all about it. A year later, when I opened that notebook, I was celebrating NYE with my husband in San Francisco! I was completely amazed at how our words can materialize and became reality! I have been practicing notebook goal setting ever since.

Today I’m a successful business woman, a mother of twin boys, a model and the owner of a successful interior design company. However, my life is still full of twists, turns, and possibilities. For instance, I once received an invitation to participate in Miss Russian San Francisco beauty pageant. Despite my immediate thoughts (“I’m too old, I’m too busy, I’m not good enough”), I decided to take a leap of faith and said “Of course!”. Casting and rehearsals were fantastic, and I was enjoying every moment of it. Winning was not even on my mind, so when I’ve heard Karina, the pageant organizer, announcing my name as a winner, it was magical! A lot of moms ask me how I find time to juggle all these things. The answer is simple: I live in the moment and put the past in the past where it belongs. This gives me the power to draw on the blank canvas which is my future. Another key to success is letting go of control. We, women in general and moms in particular,
love the validation of our power that comes from controlling everything around us. But if we let go we can create teams and empower other people. These days I don’t have time to watch TV or sit around on the couch. I am moving every minute of my day and loving it! I listen to my body, do Pilates every morning and evening just for 10 minutes, and do sit-ups while brushing my teeth. I wake up at 6:15 to get my exercise done, get ready for work and look fabulous. I turn on the music to wake up the kids, get them ready, and leave the house at 7:15 to drop them off at a daycare. At 8 I create a possibility for the day to set the tone (for instance, the possibility of generosity, or love, or connection, or happiness), and dance through conversations as I connect with people. During my commute I read the latest news and set goals in four areas: work, personal development (health, artistic and creative self-expression), family, and my interior design business.
The more I do, the more I accomplish. I set goals but make sure I enjoy the process of achieving them.

My advice to all wonderful moms! Never doubt yourself and your decisions as a mom. You are the best your kids got. Don’t look for answers in the past and be present for your kids! Create team and teamwork and find time for yourself during the week. Be on the same page with your significant other and stick to a plan if you decide to implement a system or a program. Recently we introduced a fun star rewards game which kids love to play. They now can’t wait to clean their toys, brush their teeth and behave before they go to bed. They count their stars until they reach that magic ten for a well deserved reward! My final golden tip - be in action for what you want in life without thinking if you win on not. The space that opens up is magical! Play and have fun!

Why a business plan is a must for your company 2. A business plan can help you determine how to spend your time and money most effectively. It can help you estimate what you’ll need to spend to reach your goals, whether that means adding an IT expert or retaining an accountant. 3. A business plan may help you as you seek funding for your business. Some lenders require a formal plan before extending a loan or line of credit. Investors also want to see how you map out your strategy and goals.
As a business owner, you’re focused on the day-to-day. It’s challenging and rewarding. You have a vision for your business, where you want to go next, but the daily demands can make it hard to turn your vision into a formal business plan. But having that business plan is critical. It’s your roadmap. It helps you balance short- and long-term goals, assess customer needs, and size up your competition. It’s a real-time document that charts where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. It’s a foundation for future success. Creating a business plan can be simple with the right tools and guidance, and it can pay off in a big way. Consider these five reasons why you should create a business plan. 1. A business plan can serve as a guide through your company’s life cycle, from startup to growth to succession planning. Gaining competitive intelligence and customer insights is critical for your plan. You just might discover a new target market that’s willing to pay a premium price for your product or service. With that information, you might re-target your marketing efforts, improve customer loyalty, or maximize sales.

4. A business plan outlines current and future obstacles you might face. Your plan will include a description of your products or services, your plans for generating revenue, your target customers, trends in your industry, what your competitors are doing, and what resources you might need. This information can help you anticipate and avoid potential risks in these areas instead of reacting to them. 5. By turning your ideas into a formal plan, you can navigate internal challenges. By clearly defining roles and a strategy everyone agrees on, you can prevent conflicts between owners, employees, and other key stakeholders. As your business grows and changes, adjust your plan accordingly. Revisit it annual, biannually, or quarterly. This makes your business plan a living document that can help keep you on track to achieve your goals, whatever they might be.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Combine all of your marinade ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine. 2. Slice meat and transfer it into the marinade bowl, stirring well to coat. Refrigerate 4 to 6 hours, stirring every hour or so. 3. Let the marinated meat sit at room temp 30 minutes before skewering. Meanwhile, soak bamboo or wooden skewers at
least 30 minutes. After the meat is done marinating, slice veggies and skewer them with meat onto skewers. Brush/pour remaining marinade over skewers. 4. Grill over med/high heat for about 8-10 minutes, rotating every 2-3 minutes for even grilling. Remove kabobs from grill and let them rest at least 5 minutes before serving. Serve with your favorite steak sauce.

russian ballet costume traditions meet bay area street fashion by Masha Liapunin
“Where will I get the costumes? The quality of the ones I’ve seen is really subpar, and even that’s an understatement,” thought Tanya as she booked the very first gig — a beautiful wedding — for her classical ballet company, Cinqballet. It seemed like the only option would be to find a professional ballet seamstress whom she could trust, and design the costumes herself. Having a small but very successful troupe of ballet dancers that performed at weddings and other events, Tanya’s dream of bringing quality Russian classical ballet to the masses was coming to fruition.
She is making her dream a reality by sharing her love of classical ballet, and showing women that not only prima ballerinas can pull off beautiful tulle skirts, but you can, too! Find your style at: www.bowsandtulle.com 44

She never thought that two years after finding her dream seamstress, her crazy idea of designing a tulle skirt that can be worn offstage would mark the start of a new business venture: BowsAndTulle – clothing inspired by classical ballet.
Today, Tanya is juggling three businesses while making San Francisco her new home away from Moscow. Her days are filled managing her overseas team, networking, and creating and testing new designs (all named after heroines of world-renowned classical ballets) and colors for her ballet-inspired clothing line for women and young girls. Because of an injury, Tanya wasn’t able to pursue ballet professionally,
and at the age of 16, decided to leave the world of dance to pursue a career in IT. It took only four years for this driven young woman to realize that you can take the girl out of ballet, but you cannot take ballet out of the girl, and she started looking for the right teacher to help her return to the world of dance and reignite her passion. Tanya had the opportunity to leave her nine to five
office job to pursue her passion project of bringing classical ballet performers to weddings and events with her first company, Cinqballet. She could have never imagined that an Instagram photo of ballet dancers in street style tulle skirts and sneakers would generate so much interest that in 2017 she would be launching an online store in the US, already having a mature business in Russia.

PRACTICAL ADVICE FROM PARENTS OF FIGURE SKATING PRODIGY
HOW TO RAISE A CHAMPION
EVERY PARENT KNOWS HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO ORGANIZE YOUR CHILD’S SCHEDULE
It’s a balancing act on a tightrope that has you holding your child’s school, homework, and extracurricular activities in one hand, and your own schedule in the other hand. If something is even a little bit off the whole act can go awry. Parents of Michael Kislyuk, two Russian-Jewish immigrants who raised a 12 year old charismatic figure skater, have not only figured out a way to create this perfect balance, but have made their son a champion out of it. Take their advice on how to bring out the best in your children.
by Alessandra Ensch
You might say that this boy is something of a wunderkind, that he is one of the few children that have mastered the balancing act that not every child can overcome, however, this is a flawed mentality. Every child can become a champion of sorts and the secret to this is simpler than you’d think - the secret is parent’s involvement. Michael’s ice skating career did not
Every child can become a champion of sorts and the secret to this is simpler than you’d think - the secret is parent’s involvement. Victoria Kislyuk
begin effortlessly. The charismatic young boy began skating when he was just three years-old and surprisingly he hated it and couldn’t stand that the ice was so cold. Nevertheless, there was still a small part of him that was drawn to the ice and at the age of four, Michael flourished into his newly found passion. Later this year, Michael will be testing to become a novice ranked ice skater, which is only two levels below the last and final senior ranking in ice skating. “Even if a child is super talented, the talent will go to waste if you don’t work at it”, says Victoria Kislyuk, Michael’s mom. It is important to not push your kids to do something they don’t want, but rather push them in
the direction of doing something they already enjoy and that will benefit them in the future. “Nothing is easy, but it builds their character. If they work hard on their passion, they’ll work hard in their lives”. Everyone deserves a chance to be a champion and a lot of these grand achievements are at the cost of parent’s time. You are in charge of your child’s goals and as a parent, you have the power to set your kids’ goals higher. Michael could have never become an ice skating champion if his parents did not dedicate so much of their time, money, and most importantly their unwavering support. How much can you motivate your child to achieve?
photos by: Julie Artiukhov | juliettphotography.com
At such a young age, Michael Kislyuk is already a novice ice skating champion who has won numerous awards, teaches an ice skating class at the local South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena and is on his way to win the nationals. Not only this, but Michael excels in his studies and is known to be a straight A student.
ABOUT MICHAEL Earlier in his iceskating career, Michael was trained by Sergei Ponomarenko, three-time World Champion and 1992 Olympic Champion.
Michael is only two levels below the last and final senior ranking in ice skating.
He is considered something of a celebrity in South Lake Tahoe.
The boy doesn’t like being regarded as “famous”. He considers himself just a normal kid.
Michael’s average professional ice skating lessons are around $100-$125 per hour.
“I’m really thankful for my parents who always support me. I couldn’t have done it without them”.
“I may be small, but I have a big personality”. Michael Kislyuk
For Michael, ice skating is his life, “I can do anything on ice”, he says. The young boy spends most of his free time in an ice arena and his usual weekly schedule consists of spending six days a week at an ice skating arena and five to six hours stretching and being on ice, while also fitting in school work. Michael calls his biggest enemy homework, yet, he’s still a straight A student and has passed many of his classmates in science, math, English, and social studies. To many children competition is something to be fearful of, yet 48
RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
competing is Michael’s favorite part of ice skating and because of this enthusiasm for competing he has won “too many awards to count”. Every year he actively competes with other children and every year he is considered to be the youngest ice skater competing in his rank. Nonetheless, this does not bother Michael, “I may be small, but I have a big personality”. This young ice skater’s talent has definitely not gone unnoticed by the local surrounding area and at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena he even
WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM
has his own wall of fame showcasing his pictures, trophies, and awards he has won over the years. Besides this, he also has his own ice skating class at this ice arena where he teaches five year old children to skate. His mother, Victoria Kislyuk, often recalls how before one of her son’s classes many of the children couldn’t even stand on ice and only after two lessons with Michael, some were already gliding, “He can show his passion to other kids. This makes me prouder of him than when he wins competitions”.

Health Care Professionals Doctor Of Dental Surgery MY DENTIST CLINIC
Dr. Alexander Klimushkin As a young man, Alexander became passionate about becoming a dentist and opening his own dental clinic. It was an ambitious goal for a boy raised in an immigrant family that had no financial ability to support their son through a dental school, let alone provide the starting capital for his own practice. Financial uncertainty did not prevent Alexander from reaching for his dream. Neither did years spent studying for a degree in dentistry. Alexander first graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in Biological Science. He then followed his calling and applied to the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry from which he graduated as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. His graduation followed by years of work at some of the best dental clinics in California. However, Alexander did not settle for a good pay and a stable job. The young doctor decided to go all in and invest into his own practice. Several years ago Dr. Klimushkin opened My Dentist, a top-of-the-line dental clinic located in West Sacramento. The office features new technologies which provide for the same-day in-house production of crowns, bridges, and implants restoration. Dr. Klimushkin practices metal-free dentistry, using only high-quality, safe and esthetic materials for crowns, onlays, and dental fillings. The office also provides cosmetic services including custom bleaching kits, and bonding. Although Dr. Klimushkin realized his long-anticipated dream by opening his own office, he considers this achievement a milestone rather than a finish line. The doctor is working on building a loyal customer base by providing his new patients with some the best dental experience. “We focus on prevention and teaching our patients how to maintain healthy teeth in order to avoid dental problems and costly procedures in the future, says Dr. Klimushkin. Alexander is a great example of dedication and perseverance that brings success despite any difficulties that appear along the way.

Traditions within family and school are important. They help us create memories and build morale in the core of a child. In our families we create customs such as parents lay their hands to pray a blessing over their children on their birthday. Or perhaps the markings on the door frames to see how much they’ve grown over the year.

There’s the baking of a traditional apple pie or a special dish, reserved for a family holiday. There are also the preserved memories stored away in our family archives. The first lost tooth of little brother, or sister’s favorite doll (the one that somehow ended up without arms), or even the first school report card. There’s the annual tradition of chaos and running around the house looking for early Christmas gifts. We go down memory lane sifting through family journals and albums as we reflect on special events, lessons learned, sibling quarrels, and notes.
filled with shovels and seedlings and glee. The noisy sport competitions and even the volunteer work we really didn’t like doing which we, as children, turned into celebrations of something fun and good. These little recurring situations left a huge impression on us for the rest of our lives. And these are the things that are remembered by our children. After all, what is a school without traditions - it’s dry, dull and uninspiring.
We at COA have created many of our own traditions. Recently, the second grade class turned an ordinary Friday into “Senior Day.” It was fun to see little There are also traditions created senior citizens with painted in the school atmosphere. Vacation Photos” and “Teachers Graduation Pictures” that show faculty during their school years. Or have you ever been stuck in traffic watching the Kindergartners walking in their homemade “vehicles” during our transportation parade? Our school, much like our families, have our own customs and annual traditions. We host events such as our annual Open House, Winter Celebration, Family Movie Night, Slavic Heritage Week and Sporting events. We ask that you, dear parents and grandparents, pay extra attention to these events. And we ask that you please join us for our various competitions in math or the Spelling Bee, come marvel at the impressive ingenuity of our students at the Exhibit of Inventions, come see the latest student art collection or go mining for gold during a school field trip. Come participate, care and God-willing, one day when your children grow up, you can look back and remember the pleasant memories made with your children!
