Sports exist outside of politics & unify people all over the world!

publisher’s note

I, together with the rest of the world, was glued to the TV screen for 20 days watching the developments at FIFA World Cup 2018. Bookmakers have called it the most unpredictable championship in history and the world has looked at the hosting country, Russia, from a different perspective. The world has always associated Russia with vodka, KGB, bears in the streets and negative 40-degree temperatures. Finally, they saw her in an entirely

different light: friendly people, stunning architecture, gorgeous women and delicious food. This championship has brought people closer and shown that in spite of “politicians’ dirty games”, sanctions, and confrontations, sports are capable of unifying people of the most diverse nationalities, professions and races.

«OH, SPORT! YOU ARE PEACE» Pierre de Coubertin

United States and Russia are two superpowers that have long been competing on the world arena. I truly hope that the heads of these two great countries can follow the example of our sportsmen and learn to play the game of politics in the way that unites our nations and brings the world together. This might be wishful thinking, but I truly believe that we are all players of one big team, and only united, we are able to make our world a better place. That should be our unanimous goal! EXPOSITION

MOM, BIG DREAMS, AND MARIAH CAREY Karina knew that she wanted to dedicate her life to music since she was a young girl. Listening to her idol, Mariah Carey, for hours on end and singing along into her hair comb instead of a mic, Karina pictured herself in the limelight on a huge stage performing in front of thousands. Although people were fascinated by her vocal talent, no one took her big dreams seriously. People adored the little starlet, but told her to stick to the Russian pop songs instead of chasing the musical trends from the West. The only person who believed that there were no limits to Karina’s talent was her mother. A violin player herself, she knew that Karina was an incredibly gifted child who had all the chance in the world to become a great singer. Her mother sacrificed all she had to help Karina explore her vocal talents.

RISING ACTION

MOSCOW, SEVERE DISEASE, DESTINY Her mother’s efforts paid off when Karina was admitted to the Moscow State School of Variety Arts, one of the most prestigious art academies in the nation. It was almost impossible to be accepted there without big money, connections, or a rare talent. “I did not just want to be a good singer, my goal was to be the best,” – that was and always has been Karina’s motivation. But the girl’s dreams were shattered when she was diagnosed with asthma. Plaguing Karina since childhood, asthmatic episodes tormented her for weeks on end; hormonal imbalance caused weight gain, and singing came with more and more effort. It seemed that she had reached the end of her vocal career before it ever began, but after each storm there is a rainbow. At this darkest and the most crucial moment in her life, Karina met Peter Goncharuk, the author of a unique treatment method called Biophonics. We will not torture you with the details of this scientific method, but it was because of Biophonics that Karina was completely cured of her asthma and set about conquering new musical heights with renewed enthusiasm.

CONFLICT

NEW YORK, SURVIVAL, BRIGHTON BEACH New York is the city of dreams, a city of success and also a city of broken hopes. Having made up her mind to keep moving and growing, Karina participated in a student exchange program and obtained the coveted J-1 visa. She flew to the World’s Capital – New York! Beckoning with its lights and skyscrapers, she worked 24/7 without a day off. On holidays, she sang in Russian restaurants that were popular on Brighton Beach. Despite her obsession with American classics, Karina had to sing old, Russian pop songs that were trending among the older immigrants in NYC. “It was as if this city was testing me to see what I was made of. But if I have a passion for something, you cannot break me! I was very much aware that my growth and further development were only possible in America.” Having saved up enough money, Karina spent it all on attorney fees and obtained a hard to get O-visa, granted only to people with exceptional talents. LOS ANGELES, FAKE PEOPLE,CHASING A DREAM

The visa is obtained, tickets are purchased, and the main music and movie capitol of the USA, Los Angeles, is welcoming Karina with sunshine, fascinating beaches and palm trees. Like moths to bright lights, talented young men and women are drawn here in pursuit of their dreams. However, most of them get burned and disillusioned in the glamorous cover of this multi-billion dollar industry. During her six years of living in LA, Karina met a few of those people who promised her the world and vowed to help, but they turned out to be nothing but empty words. “You know what the difference is between Russia and USA? In Russia, without talent but with money, one can make their way to the top and gain popularity. In the latter, even with money, one has to have talent to be noticed and helped on the road to success. I have already invested more than $150,000 in myself, but in LA, they would laugh at this amount. My journey has not been easy, but I believe that there is someone watching over me from up above. I know I will achieve my goals as long as I can keep my emotions in balance and be grateful for what I already have!”

PREVIEW

CAREER, VICTORY OVER MINDSETS, GOALS

The worst decision a fledgling singer could make is to appear on The Voice or American Idol. They keep inviting me to participate, but once you read their contract, you realize it is slavery in its purest form, not a dream career.

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

As I was preparing for my interview with Cooper Phillip, I already had a hunch about the crazy rhythm of her life. Her day is planned literally down to the minute. She performs at private concerts and corporate parties for such companies as Pepsi, Verizon, Kaiser, etc. She teaches singing via the web to 26 students whose age’s range from 5 to 50. She is currently recording her new album and is creating ideas for her music videos. She is getting ready for a fall tour through Russia, Ukraine and Europe; however she is keeping the details secret for now. She is basically living it up, but with her explosive energy she could not live any other way. “The hardest part for me turned out to be working on my own character. Every person has their own issues that stand in their way to reach a new level. I am still fighting mine and America has helped me in a number of ways. In this country, anything is possible. The most difficult part, after growing up and living in Russia, is to make my mind really believe in these possibilities and overcome the fear of not realizing my full potential…”

Teaching, for me, is happiness and a source of inspiration, especially when I see my students make substantial progress and help them get rid of asthma or stuttering thanks to my knowledge of Biophonics.

Snoqualmie Waterfall Snoqualmie Falls is one of the most picturesque and stunning waterfalls in the US. The falls were featured in the popular cult television show, “Twin Peaks”. Snoqualmie Falls is also known as a spiritual place as it gave birth to many legends. You will be delighted with the power and beauty of this waterfall, which is even higher than the well-known Niagara Falls.

TIP

The trick is to park on the right side of the road (i.e. opposite from the Salish Lodge Hotel). There is a huge lot on the right side with plenty of parking. Tourists typically try to park in about 10 spaces right in front of the falls, and with over 40,000 daily visitors – it’s a losing bet. Use the large lot on the opposite side of the road and enjoy the relaxing walk over a historic bridge.

Amazon GO Located on 7th Ave. in Seattle, this store is a must-see for those who want to confirm that the future is already here. It is the first and only grocery store in the world that allows customers to purchase products without using a check-out station (cashier). Just download the AmazonGo App and enjoy shopping. Customers are able to literally “grab and go” without having to wait in line to pay. Try their chocolate-almond croissant and delicious ham & brie sandwich!

FareStart Restaurant No doubt there are plenty of good restaurants in Seattle, but we chose the best. The FareStart Restaurant is perfect: gourmet food, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and an inspiring story! The FareStart Project started more than 25 years ago and its main goal is to transform homeless people’s lives through food. After their 16 week cooking course, 90% of the adult graduates land jobs. This restaurant creates value for the community and offers a way for everyone to play a role doing something that truly matters.

Seattle 2018 4 Chihuly Garden & Glass

Chihuly Garden and Glass is a visually stunning exhibition! You will appreciate the intricacies of the glass as you delve into this time-consuming art. No two pieces of glass are alike! In addition to viewing the art, you’re invited into their theater to get an understanding of the motivation behind the glass art as well as the eccentricity of the artist. You’re free to take pictures to your heart’s content. They even offer professional photos at no extra charge!

Kerry Park If you’ve ever seen a picture of the Seattle Skyline with the Space Needle in the foreground, chances are it was taken at Kerry Park. Featured in movies, national publications and pretty much every pamphlet highlighting the Emerald City, Kerry Park offers the classic Seattle view for free! You can find your way here via public transit or Uber and it’s well worth the effort to get here. On a clear day, the views of the Space Needle and the downtown skyline, framed by a glistening Mount Rainier in the distance, are totally Instagram-worthy, not to mention simply worth standing there and soaking it all in.

Lake View Cemetry A walk through a cemetery can hardly sound exciting. But, believe it or not, the Lake View Cemetery will impress you not only with its mute beauty, but also with the personalities who rest here: Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, Princess Angeline, and members of the Denny Party. This is a great place to visit and soaking in the buried history will cause you to reflect on the fact that everything in this world is fleeting…

Gas Works Park For newcomers to Seattle, it’s unlike any place they’ve ever seen. For Seattleites, it’s another quirky dot on their city’s map. But it’s known worldwide for its ingenuity and uniqueness. It’s a piece of land designed by architect Richard Haag, surrounded by the waters of Lake Union, with unbeatable views atop its grassy knoll. Richard described his work there as “thinning a forest”, a reflection of how he edited the conglomeration of industrial towers, stacks, pipes, and sheds. This park is a must-see for everyone with its Industrial ruins, water views, grassy hill and unbelievable sunsets!

Ballard Locks The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, more popularly known as the Ballard Locks, are worth visiting for a number of reasons. A Ballard Locks visit is quintessentially Seattle and is home to the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden — a beautiful, park-like setting and a great escape from the city. Lounge on the grass as you watch the boats go by. The Ballard Locks also feature a visitor’s center with interpretive exhibits and a gift shop. Visiting hours for the locks and the surrounding garden is 7 A.M. to 9 P.M.

Rattlesnake Ledge This 2.5 mile hike with scenic views is only about an hour outside Seattle. If you’re taking a trip to Seattle and want to get out of the city to do at least one hike, this is it. It doesn’t take long to reach the top and if the sun is out, the lake is a glimmering, emerald beauty! More pros about this trail: - - - -

Trip from Seattle to Friday Harbor If you have one day that you can spend out of Seattle, then the whale watching tour to San Juan Island is a must. It’s an entertaining trip under the guidance of an expert, onboard naturalist. The prices are affordable, the views from the boat are breathtaking, and the Friday Harbor is a picturesque small town that you can explore during your 2-hour stopover. I highly recommend shopping at the local market where you will find a huge variety of local berries that will make your trip even sweeter. And a bonus, of course, is the 96% chance to see orcas and whales in their natural habitat.

10 TIPS

BOOST

by Yelena Nikitskaya

In 2018, Facebook updated their algorithms. When this social platform first appeared, 100% of your friends were able to see your posts. Shortly after public and business pages were launched and paid ads appeared, organic posts’ exposure went down

Facebook has over 1 billion daily users that scroll through their newsfeeds, publish posts, share content, and engage with their friends on a consistent basis. With this much activity buzzing on one platform, finding ways to boost your page activity can be extremely challenging.

by 50% and then another 30%! These days, only 5 to 10% of your friends get to see your posts. Organic reach has become harder than ever before, but there are secret ways to boost the number of views your posts will get.

Ten simple steps to increase your page activity up to 50%!

Tip #1

Tip #3

SET UP YOUR PROFILE

KNOW THE BEST TIME

You will not have a second chance to make a first impression! Make sure to set up your profile the right way. Upload a good cover photo, double check that it is cropped correctly, avoiding “chopped heads” in the picture. Only 5% of people go to your page from your posts; the rest only see your post in their newsfeed. Facebook algorithms are set up in such a way that cover pages with minimal information are hidden by Facebook and their posts are minimally shown to friends and followers. An incomplete profile goes against the common standards of social media culture and is therefore overlooked by the Facebook engine. The more information you provide, the greater the searchability and visibility of the page.

Tip #2

1. Unfriend. Periodically, purge your account of “empty” profiles. By that I mean, delete profiles that no longer exist. They don’t contain photos and when you click on them, you receive a message saying something like, “this person has deleted the account and is no longer there”. A non-existing “friend” is someone who will hardly give you “Likes” or comments.

30

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Tip #4

THE LAW OF SOWING AND REAPING Okay, you have chosen the timeframe and are ready to post. Don’t rush! Wait about five to ten minutes before posting and spend some time “liking” and commenting on other people’s posts. Facebook, in turn, will give you greater visibility, and these very friends will be glad to do what you have done for them and comment and/or share your posts.

REGULARLY ‘FRIEND’ AND ‘UNFRIEND’ PEOPLE

2. Friend. Add a couple of people a day, two or three, not more. If you add too many people at one time and then go idle, your page visibility will decrease. Regular additions to the “Friends” section prevents your page ratings from dropping.

Time is of the essence. The visibility granted to the post by the Facebook algorithms confines 80% of the reach to the first 30 minutes. As such, posting should be done when your followers are online. The best time is usually from 8am to 11am and after 7 pm. Between 1pm and 4pm is what I call “Facebook dead time” when activity and response drops three to four times. The time when your followers are usually online can be seen on your business/public profile under “Insights.”

Tip #5

POST FREQUENCY

1

Do not post more than three times a day. It used to be that more was better. Now, the rule is after three posts daily or five to seven posts weekly, the visibility of every subsequent post drops by a third, then a half, and so on. Meaning, all your subsequent posts are automatically less popular.

YOUR FACEBOOK PRESENCE Tip #6

DEVELOP CONSISTENCY Ideally, post daily, but if that’s too hard, set realistic goals and be consistent in reaching them. For example, post one to three times per week. Consistency is key.

Tip #7

BOOST POST VISIBILITY BY COMMENTING Try to get your friends engaged. Give people a call for action; ask them a question or their opinion. This makes people feel involved and boosts participation and comments. Make sure to reply to everyone who has commented. This shows your gratitude, encourages people to comment more, and, most importantly, increases the activity Facebook algorithms are looking for. This will increase the popularity of your post and, as a result, make it visible to a greater audience.

Tip #8

Tip #9

1

PUBLISH ORGANIC CONTENT It is recommended not to post links to other websites unless it’s a paid advertisement link. Facebook does not want people to leave its platform. You may have noticed that your posts containing outside links do not attract activity and popularity. After Facebook added their own video uploading function, it started competing with YouTube, so YouTube videos lost their appeal. Facebook only wants to advertise its own content and therefore will reward everyone who helps with this process. Mr.

IN CRE DI BLE by Margret Okunev

What sparked your interest in becoming a media personality?

My mom would tell you that from the moment I could speak, I was pointing to the TV and begging to see a movie. I was raised in Odessa (Texas, not to be confused with the famous city by the sea in Ukraine) and in a small town like that, radio seemed like a stepping-stone to making movies. In a way, it was as it led me to a TV job, then a bigger TV job, and then a TV job that allowed me to visit sets of the biggest movies being produced in the industry.

Did you have No. I got my degree in Theatre Arts a plan B career? to ensure that I'd be largely useless for the rest of my life. Who has been your favorite star to interview?

To place your ad, please call at 916-299-1777

No one star...my personal favorites are directors Steven Spielberg, Patty Jenkins, Martin Scorsese, etc. I've interviewed every Oscar winning director of the last three decades, even directors who created my favorite movies. As for interviews that have brought me the most joy, while there are many, they usually fall into two categories; funny people and people who have had a movie made about their life‌ Robin Williams, Oprah, Justin Timberlake, Muhammad Ali. I can't remember where my keys are right now, but I can remember where and when I last spoke to each of these people.

Mark S. Allen is a household name all over the nation, especially in Sacramento; Lucky us!

Do you have any projects or accomplishments that you consider to be the most significant in your career?

For a guy with, and let’s be honest here, mediocre talent at best, I’m shocked at any accomplishment. I thought my life was over when they cancelled my “Comedy Central Show”, and I've had seven Emmy wins since then, two more National TV shows, a movie shown in 168 counties and a local morning show, “Morning Blend”, that I'm both eternally grateful for and equally proud of.

What made you step behind the camera for a change?

It was never a matter of if, it was only when. Most of my best friends are all connected to the industry in some way. Fellow movie critics, publicists and studio execs always asked “when are you going to make movies instead of just talking about them!” Fast-forward three years later, and as of last week, I’ve now produced three major motion pictures headed to theaters in 2019.

Have you traveled to any interesting places?

It's going to sound like I'm pandering to you, but Moscow. I was there for the World Premiere of “Transformers 3”. Lincoln Park played a (not so) private concert in Red Square afterward and a friend of mine who writes for “Rolling Stone” and I went out with the help of our translators who insisted that we have "the true, local Russian experience." They took us to an amazing, rooftop party and within five minutes of being there, the very calm music that was playing screeched to a halt and a booming voice jumped on the mic saying, "My name is Tyrese and I'm one of the stars of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and I'm taking over this joint!" So our Russian experience quickly turned into a Hollywood experience; but he played an amazing set!

Emmy Special Achievement Award “Extra Butter Epic Promo”

What were the steps?

My awesome friend and producer, Howard Burd, was in the process of completing “Mother’s Day”. He was kind enough to bring me on as a very low level associate producer on a movie which was taking a bit longer to finance. I pitched a movie based on a true story that I knew could be brought in for the budget we had. It got the green light and the movie turned out better than we even expected. As a result, the green light was given to two more films that Howard and I partnered on. One of which was a film about Nick Newell, a MMA Fighter, who won a World Championship despite being born with only one arm. The other film, “Ballbuster”, starring Jerry O Connell, just might be the most absurd, ridiculous offensively, hysterical, comedy ever made.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I have no free time, which is fine as it apparently keeps me out of trouble. I have equal passion for making movies and broadcasting; and when that alarm goes off at 2AM, I wake up happy about whatever random thing I'll be doing on ABC that morning. I still love talking to movie stars about their movies on my syndicated show, “Extra Butter”.

Coming from a self-certified grill master and meat eater like my husband, I knew we had to learn their secrets in an attempt to re-create this tasty meal at home. “People’s Choice Award” at The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Offs. This cook-off is the biggest barbeque festival in all of America with 24 teams invited to compete in Sparks, Nevada. Over 400,000 people attend this event and a quarter of a million pounds of ribs are cooked! The tips and tricks I am sharing with you come straight from the pros.

EXPERT ADVICE ON THE PERFECT RACK OF RIBS AT HOME Look for fat marbling in your meat. The fat will keep your meat moist and will flavor the ribs as it melts away. Once you have the meat, spend the time removing the silver skin (the off-white membrane on the bone side).

Left on, it will prevent the seasonings and smoke from penetrating the ribs. Then simply choose your favorite spices to rub the meat and let it marinate for at least 3 hours in the fridge.

EXPERT TIP: A tomato corer or fork can be a great tool to separate the silver skin from your meat

PERFECT BBQ SAUCE RECIPE • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

32 oz ketchup 4 oz Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins) 1 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup molasses 1 tsp hot sauce 1.5 tsp black pepper 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp paprika 1.5 tsp chili powder 2 oz mustard 2 Tbsp liquid smoke 1/2 Tbsp crushed garlic 1/3 cup chopped red onions 2 oz pineapple juice 1/3 cup cornstarch (mixed with ½ cup cold water)

1. Combine the ingredients above (in order) in a stockpot 2. Whip ingredients thoroughly 3. Fill pot with water 2” from top lip of pot 4. Put on low flame and stir every 15 minutes until thick EXPERT TIP: Add some diced apples or mango in your favorite BBQ sauce for a fresh kick Check out the Back Forty Texas BBQ Menu at www.BackFortyOnline.com

THINGS TO AVOID WHEN BBQ’ING RIBS - Never cook directly over the heat source - Never undercook (or overcook) ribs. Pull them out at 140F as it continues to cook - Never sauce your ribs too early. The sugars in BBQ sauce can easily caramelize and give a burnt aftertaste - Never go from the fridge to the oven or grill. Allow the meat to approach room temperature, 30 minutes should do the trick

FUN

FACT

It all began at a Poker Game. In the mid-1960’s, Michael Schroeder was in Austin, Texas, engaged in his favorite pastime. Another player, short on cash but long on nerve, covered Schroeder’s bet by offering “half my restaurant”. Schroeder’s three 3’s beat a pair of queens. When it was time to pay up, the owner of the barbecue restaurant insisted that he meant “half the space,” not a “half interest”. Schroeder’s “half” was an empty room in the back. Angered by the sleazy tactic, Schroeder collected his grandmother’s barbecue recipes and set up a restaurant-within-a-restaurant. Customers were aware of the shared-space arrangement. Although his seating space was limited to 40 people, his barbecue was so superior that customers were soon asking specifically to be seated in the back forty. Business in the front section dwindled; Schroeder bought out the owner and turned it into the legendary barbecue chain it is today. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM 37

HOW PLAYING SPORTS CAN GET YOU INTO COLLEGE?

by Mia Jannel 38

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Best Sports Selective colleges now receive applications from many more academically qualified students than they are able to admit. Students with stellar GPAs, high standardized test scores, and plenty of academic achievements now find that those accomplishments on their own aren’t enough to guarantee a spot at many selective colleges, like Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, etc.

PLAYING SPORTS CAN INCREDIBLY INCREASE THE CHANCES TO GET YOUR COLLEGE ADMISSIONS. For example, the annual tuition and living expense budget at Stanford is almost $70,000 per year. But few people know that Stanford University is ranked 1 for the athlete opportunities and has amazing percentage of studentathletes graduates – 94%. Numbers like those leave parents praying their kid will be athletic enough to land themselves a National College Athletic Association (NCAA)* scholarship.

TO GET

1

Athletic Scholarships

Gymnastics Gymnastics is a highly competitive sport at the NCAA Division I*, Division II, and Division III levels. To become a college gymnast on a gymnastics scholarship you will have to be more than just a great athlete. The combination of great talent and strong grades are what coaches are looking for. Gymnastics is always one of the highest ranked sports in terms of team GPA’s in the NCAA. College gymnastics coaches are looking to recruit athletes that excel both in their sport and also in the classroom. Athletically, if you want a gymnastics scholarship it is important to be a level 9 or level 10 athlete by your senior year. Training hard and getting good results at your local, state, regional and national levels are what coaches are looking to see in your gymnastics resume. Basketball is a team sport, but you have a greater opportunity to shine and have an outsized impact on the outcome of the game. Traditional basketball scholarships at the most competitive universities require a great deal of talent in the sport and the ability to catch the attention of college recruiters. Many players begin their scholarship and college search early on - as early as in the 9th grade. To improve your chances in landing a basketball scholarship, we encourage you to start the process early, practice talking with college coaches, creating an impressive player reel, visiting as many colleges as you can, researching your prospective colleges thoroughly, maintaining strong academics, acquiring multiple references, and keeping up with deadlines.

2

Basketball

3

Ice-hockey

Combining your passion for game play on the ice and your desire to go to college may make a very sweet deal if you are dedicated to the hunt for ice hockey scholarships. In the past decade, collegiate ice hockey for both men and women has continued to improve, consistently getting more streamlined, better organized, and more well-funded. In order to be a very serious candidate for a scholarship award, you may need to display high grades, class ranking, test scores, or financial need as well as hockey prowess. Approach the scholarship process early in your high school career and keep your mind open: there are increasingly good opportunities to award very talented hockey players and endless ways to use these to your academic advantage.

National College Athletic Association (NCAA) is a non-profit organization which regulates athletes of 1,281 North American institutions and conferences. The NCAA separates its member institutions by divisions. Division II colleges are generally smaller and have fewer athletic department resources than Division I schools, but they’re larger and more well funded than Division III institutions.

4

Tennis

While you don’t necessarily need the on-the-court skills of Serena Williams or Roger Federer to be competitive for a tennis scholarship, the sport does place a higher premium on talent than many other sports. As most tennis scholarships are awarded by the student athletes’ intended colleges, they also require minimum GPAs to determine initial eligibility and continued high academic achievement even after you make the team. As the popularity of tennis grows, so does the competition for scholarships. If you’re a decent player but not interested in a tennis career after you graduate, consider applying to schools with lesser-known tennis programs where you could not only be eligible for a full-ride, but a good academic experience and more time competing.

5

Football Having a brilliant GPA and SAT scores, incredible recommendations, and excellent test scores can’t guarantee you the tuition at an elite Private US university (any in the Ivy Athletic league, MIT, Stanford, NESCAC league, Patriot league, etc.) The eight colleges in the Ivy athletic league need 16% to 20% of their undergraduates to play an intercollegiate sport. MIT needs 22%. Many colleges in the NESCAC and Patriot leagues need 45% or More to play an intercollegiate sport. Therefore, a highly recruited athlete has an edge.

MIND AND BODY THAT IS THE MANTRA OF MANY OF THE ELITE PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN THE USA. If you want to increase your chances of being admitted to college, then sports can really help you with this!

There are over 850 college football programs and more than 80,000 college football players currently playing college football. Football is the number one scholarship sport at the college level with more full-ride scholarship than any other sport. Many larger schools will have recruiters aware of talent on high school football fields, and marketing your skills has become an important piece of landing a football scholarship. As a high visibility sport that is often used as a tool to raise fundraising dollars from alums, those chosen for full rides at the big universities should consider themselves part of an elite group of athletes. That said, schools where football is not a way of life and more of a premium is placed on academics, it may be easier to not only land a spot on the team but compete for scholarship money. Don’t rule out smaller schools where factors like need come in when doling out available funding.

INTERESTING FACTS: There are only six sports where all the scholarships are full ride. These so-called head-count sports are football, men and women's basketball, and women's gymnastics, volleyball, and tennis. In these Division I sports, athletes receive a full ride or no ride. The average value of a full scholarship at an in-state, public school is $15,000 a year. For an out of-state public school, the average value is $25,000 a year. Full athletic private school scholarship average $35,000 a year. Division I and II schools provide more than $2 billion in athletics scholarships annually to more than 126,000 student-athletes. Division III schools do not provide athletically related financial aid. Statistically, more college baseball players will go pro than athletes in any other sport. The NCAA reports that 10.5% of baseball players will go from college to pro, followed by 4.1% for ice hockey players, and 2% for football players. At 1.9%, men’s soccer, and women’s basketball at 1%, these players are the least likely to play at a professional level after college, but numbers may grow as interest and new teams develop in these two sports.

Tips on How to

from a Person Who Takes Darn Good Photos

According to the U.S. Statistics Portal, the number of social media users is estimated to reach 2.77 billion people by the year 2019. This is almost double the population of China, the most densely populated country on the planet. Having a social media presence is more than a form of entertainment, it’s a way of staying in touch with people, making new friends, sharing your passion, and influencing others. While Facebook and Twitter rely more on your talent with words, Instagram is an entirely visual platform. Creating a nice Instagram profile is directly correlated to the type of photos you post. The more visually appealing your photos are, the better they’ll engage your followers. The more you engage your followers, the more your posts will appear in other people’s feeds.

GOOD LIGHTING IS THE KEY

DON’T FORGET HASHTAGSAND CAPTIONS

BALANCE IN YOUR COMPOSITION

EXPLORE YOUR EDITING OPTIONS

Photo captions on Instagram are often just as important as the photos themselves. Don’t waste that space! Whether you have thousands of followers or just a few family members and friends; pick a caption that grabs their attention. Ask a question, share some interesting information, write anything that does more than describe what they’re already seeing. Also, use hashtags. They draw more people to your feed and earn you more followers. But whatever your hashtag, don’t load up your caption with 30-40 of them. That looks bad. Use a few strategic hashtags in your caption and then write a comment for your own photo filled with a bunch more. Just make sure that all of your hashtags are relevant.

Always remember that a great subject in poor light will always look bad. Smartphones do best in natural light and struggle in low light. Using the built-in flash almost always creates bad images. Avoid it. If you’re outside, the best lighting is during what photographers call the “golden hour”—an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. If you have to take a photo outside during the harsh light in the middle of day, look for shade. Always pay close attention to where the light and the shadows fall because they will be accentuated in your photo. Once you understand that, even a smartphone can be used to do what the great photographers do: paint with light

You’ve captured an awesome photo, but how do you turn it into a droolworthy Instagram photo? With so many editing apps available, the choices are virtually limitless. But, here are a few that are definitely worth checking out: • Snapseed • VSCO • Afterlight • A Color Story • Pro-Camera • Aviary • Camera+ • Lightroom Mobile app

Composition is a fancy word for how you arrange and organize elements of a work of art, be that a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, a still-life art arrangement, etc. It relates to how you lay out and organize the details of your future photo. For example, if you want to post a photo of your delicious breakfast, make sure that it looks really attractive and arrange the background with small, fancy details such as flowers, candles or a cup of coffee. Generally, food shots work well when photographed from above.

FORMULA X

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Igor Palagin and his business partner, Robert Myers, have created a new series of racing events featuring vehicles never before seen in the United States: Formula X Autocross. Similar to the popular European Rallycross races, Formula X pits a variety of classes of off-road, European-style vehicles against each other on a dirt track. With vehicles that are thrilling to drive and much more affordable than comparable race cars, Formula X is poised to grow exponentially in the coming years. Palagin’s Fast & Speed USA produces fast, durable and exciting cars that have racing fans taking notice; about 12,000 onlookers filled the stands at the latest Formula X race in Perris, CA. One of the vehicle models is nearly identical to those raced annually in the world famous Race of Champions. Those interested in driving Formula X cars for themselves can do so by contacting Igor Palagin or Robert Myers via

IT’S LIKE A GO-CART ON STEROIDS Ask Igor Palagin for the simplest description of his line of European-style autocross race cars, and that is what he will offer. The Fast & Speed USA CEO and President has spent much of his life working on vehicles worthy of such a characterization, and the results thus far have been stellar.

www.fxautocross.com

Palagin, along with business partner Robert Myers, are self-made pioneers of the racing scene in the United States. Recently, the duo introduced their own brand of autocross racing events called Formula X Autocross, which has begun to flourish throughout California. Formula X was directly inspired by European autocross, which takes place on dirt or gravel tracks and features competitive, wheel-to-wheel racing. This contrasts with American autocross, which typically consists of drivers individually competing for the fastest times on sealed surfaces. Originating from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Palagin was eager to find the off-road racing he hadgrown up with upon moving to California in 2002. After a visit to Rancho Cordova’s Prairie City Racetrack, Palaginsaid he was devastated by the sorry state of the vehicleshe saw. “[One off-road driver] came in with an old chassis with a Volkswagen motor, and two beer cans for air filters,” he lamented.

People looked at me like I just landed on the beach from Mars.

Palagin and the Fast & Speed USA Team are able to build vehicles with a variety of custom modifications within this common frame. Currently, there are eight variations of the car being built at the company’s Hayward shop.

It was at that moment that Palagin decided he would create his own European-style, off-road race car. And in 2005, he returned to the racetrack to introduce the first four-wheel drive buggy in the United States. “People looked at me like I just landed on the beach from Mars,” Palagin recalled. The car had its share of bumps, bruises and missteps in its initial run, mostly due to the roughness of the short-course racetracks the buggy was being driven on. Repairs to the car were getting expensive, which is something Palagin kept in mind as he continued developing the model. “You need to be able to go have fun and not think that if you break something, it’s going to cost you around $10,000 to fix it,” he said. “You start thinking, ‘should I sit on the couch and save ten grand? Or should I go have fun?” As time went on and Palagin began building more cars, the vehicles’ performance would soon go above and beyond what anyone expected. What’s more, the cars were extremely durable and very affordable. The model that may best exemplify these traits is called the CrossKart. Lightweight and lightning fast, it has a screaming Honda CBR 600 cc engine that generates an incredible power-to-weight ratio. At 660 pounds, the Kart can go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 2.5 seconds, and tops out at 130 miles per hour. It starts at a very reasonable $35,000, while comparable single-seater rally cars sold in the United States can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The other main model sold by Fast & Speed USA is called the Sprinter Buggy. This car is built on the same frame as the CrossKart, as all of the company’s vehicles are, with a few modifications and attachments. A heavier 935 pounds, this car boasts a Kawasaki 1392 cc engine and can reach 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. 48

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

“If somebody wants a two-seater car, a motorcycle engine, or a Corvette engine, we can fit those within the same chassis parameters, the same suspension, things like that,” Palagin said. “The footprint of the car stays the same… you don’t have to change the geometry of the car.” The buggies are almost identical to those driven in the world-famous Race of Champions event, which annually draws some of the best drivers from Formula One, Indie Car, NASCAR, Motocross and Rallycross. The cars raced in that event are created exclusively by Fast & Speed’s original European branch, which is run by Palagin’s friend and mentor, Johnny Hakvoort. “The car can be difficult to drive because it is so agile and quick,” Palagin said. “You’re sliding; you’re going to the corners sideways. Yet at the same time, it can be easy to maneuver and operate. When you get good at it, you can do very interesting stuff.” Soon enough, the race car that looked so alien to American crowds in 2005 was demanding attention throughout the state. Palagin recalled one instance in 2015 when he rented a track in Southern California. One of his cars drove all day, about nine hours straight in total, stunning the track’s promoter. “He said he had been in business for 40 years and had never seen that. He asked us to return [with more cars].”

As far as expanding the popularity of Formula X and Fast & Speed USA’s vehicles, Palagin is excited about what the future holds. “We want to make this very big. We are trying to sell the cars to [private owners], to companies, to teams, to keep some for ourselves, and to build more,” Palagin said. “We would like to have a sort of ‘arrive and drive’ program, but to scale it up. Potentially, we would like to bring European racers here.” The company also plans to begin seriously advertising the vehicles, as most all of Fast & Speed USA’s success has come through word-of-mouth. In addition, although nothing is official yet, the company is having serious discussions with one of North America’s major motorsports events with regard to featuring the race cars. With all of the success and interest that the Formula X vehicles have drawn in their relatively short existence in the United States, one might wonder how it took so long for the sport to arrive in America. “I guess they were just waiting for me to do it,” Palagin said with a smile.

If you want to catch the next Formula X race as well as find information on how to take the Formula X autocross cars out for a spin yourself, visit www.fxautocross.com fxautocross 50

More and more people are turning out to witness the cars for themselves. Formula X currently has about twelve events per year throughout California, the most recent taking place in front of roughly 12,000 fans at Perris Auto Speedway on the Fourth of July.

We want to make this very big. We would like to bring European racers here.

FACTS ABOUT VARIOUS JOBS They say that luxury lives in the finer details and when it comes to luxury cars, such details can get quite expensive. For example, fixing a minor scratch on a Lamborghini Huracan, which has a sticker price starting at $200,000, can add up to thousands of dollars. Unlike regular cars, most luxury vehicles are not made on assembly lines. Most exotic cars are handcrafted and meant to be a work of art. Our featured guest, Sergey Lysenko, owner of Exotics Auto, is an expert in exotic car restoration. With over 16 years of experience, Sergey’s repair shop is a go-to place for the owners of luxury cars, elite race clubs, and exotic car dealerships alike.

Featured Guest: Occupation: Experience: Name of the business: Website:

The most unique car you ever had in your shop? A Rolls Royce Ghost with a sticker price starting at $312,000. Repairing such an expensive vehicle was a fun challenge! Of all the cars you have repaired, which one would you like to keep? A Ferrari. Driving a Ferrari is definitely an experience! How many speeding tickets do you have? Zero. I love squeezing the most out of my rides, but I do it on the race tracks, not in urban conditions.

The most beautiful place on earth? Riviera Maya, Mexico. The ocean helps me reset and recharge. What Russian dish never gets old? Borscht, a Russian red beet soup and Shuba, a Russian beet salad with herring. I love to cook these dishes myself. What type of women catches your eye? Oscar Wilde said that a woman should always be a mystery; a beautiful and mysterious woman will definitely catch my eye.

Your three favorite car manufacturers? LEXUS, BMW, FERRARI The place where you’d come back again and again… Odessa, Ukraine. That city won me over with its down-to-earth, big-hearted people and friendly laid-back atmosphere. Three favorite daily habits? Cooking breakfast, going to the gym, and enjoying my work. The secret of running a successful business? Do what you love and always have bold goals.

CELEBRATING

15 YEARS

Since April 2003, the Gateway Community Charters (GCC) has successfully conceived, created and implemented 7 quality charter school options in the Greater Sacramento Valley.

OF EXCELLENCE!

Each of our schools has a different and unique focus, from our Higher Learning Academy (a small core knowledge emphasis K – 8th grade school) – to our Community Collaborative Charter School which is a K – 12th grade independent study program serving primarily credit deficient and students ‘at – promise’ in need of greater support and remediation… and on to Community Outreach Academy (K – 8th college preparatory focus with an emphasis for English Language Learners), Futures High School (9 – 12th grade focus with an emphasis for English Language Learners), and Sacramento Academic and Vocational Academy (a 7th – 12th grade independent study program with an emphasis on careers and work force development).
