publisher’s note Valentine’s Day has always been special to our family. My wife and I would usually plan a trip to escape from the hustle and bustle of life to spend some quality time together. One year, Valentine’s Day fell on a Wednesday, which meant that our family tradition was ruined. Both of us worked, so getting out of town in the middle of the week was not an option. We simply agreed to meet for dinner. Little did I know, I was about to be “kidnapped”.

KIDNAPPED My wife texted me telling me to stop by the house and change into a suit because our reservation was some place fancy. When I got home, I decided to take a quick shower before heading out. Just as I covered myself with soap, I heard the doorbell ring. Whoever was knocking was very persistent. I threw on a towel and went to open the door. To my surprise, it was a complete stranger. He handed me a white envelope with a short note that read: “Don’t ask any questions. Don’t bother changing, just get in the van.” For a moment I thought it was a joke, but one look at the serious face of this muscular man in front of me, and I changed my mind. Next thing I knew, I was sitting in the back of a van, heading down a ghostly road, away from the city lights.

VALENTINE

My driver wasn’t much of a companion. He didn’t say a word and ignored all of my questions. We left the city behind and all I could see were dark rice fields with lonely farm lights occasionally blinking in the distance. I had a bad feeling about this; I felt like I was in a scene from Taken. We finally pulled over next to a vintage hotel, and my driver handed me another envelope with a room number and a key. At this point, I had nothing to lose. I was two hours away from home with no wallet, no cell phone, and no idea what I had gotten myself into. I went up to the room and slowly opened the door. The thing I saw took my breath away. The room was filled with candles, rose petals and an elegant dinner set for two. It seemed I was to be a “Valentine hostage”. And there, standing in

the middle of the room, was a beautiful woman in a red dress. My beautiful wife. She went to great lengths to turn a weekday Valentine’s Day into an adventure of a lifetime. We both went back to work the next morning with a memory that will last forever. It’s incredible how easy it is to make someone you love happy by simply thinking outside the box. This issue of Russian Time has lots of fresh ideas on how to make that special person in your life, smile! I hope you find it inspiring. Read it, live it, love it! Saving work vacation days for a year, I knew this winter was time to go big. But where could I visit without rain or snow to complicate a good time? The answer came easy. My buddy Matt and his girlfriend Katherine were in Australia under a travel visa and I soon learned that frigid holidays in Sacramento meant summer sun in the Down Under. Roping my brother Cole along, we booked flights to Sydney and came up with a plan of attack: an epic journey through Aussie’s famed Great Ocean Road.

SYDNEY

&

Flying from Sacramento, we lucked out with a layover in Honolulu with enough time to scale the Diamond Head Crater and discover an eerie temple in the island’s north side. As the plane descended, we got our first taste of Sydney with a clear-skied view of its waterfront botanical gardens and Opera House shining in the summer sun.

AUSTRALIA TASMANIA by Kory Barri

ADVENTURE

We explored the city laneways, learning of Sydney’s beginnings as a prison colony that morphed over time into a modern metropolis. Yet in the old bricks of buildings you’ll find traces of its dark past, with symbol signatures carved into stone as an indication of the inmate who created them. For our last night we embarked on a journey with Dave’s Pub Tours through the shady alleyways of a district called The Rocks. Here, we learned of four brewpubs vying for the bragging rights to Sydney’s oldest pub and heard the tale of James Squire, an inmate who escaped the hangman’s rope by brewing excellent beer. We were even allowed to descend beneath an old pub to the secret remnants of ancient prison cells.

The Great Ocean Road has earned acclaim not only for prestigious turquoise shores, but for the diversity of environments encountered throughout its trek. Our first stop was Kennett River, a hotspot for one of Australia’s cutest critters: the koala. Driving a dirt road with necks strained out rental car windows, we scanned through miles of Eucalyptus trees stretching endlessly on each side. By the end we spotted several koalas, each tucked away in their 21 houra-day snooze. Back on the highway, our setting began to shift from cliffside coasts to the winding roads and lush ferns of the Otway rainforest. What a change of scene! Here, we took a trek across the Otway Fly suspension bridges built high in the rainforest trees. Next on our list was perhaps the Great Ocean Road’s most well-known attraction: The Twelve Apostles. These monumental slabs of sandstone emerge from nowhere amidst goldenbrown grains on the shore. After taking in the views we went for a dip in nearby Loch Ard Gorge, famous for a multitude of shipwrecks from sailors attempting to enter its narrow gate.

MELBOURNE Next up we flew to Melbourne, a city known for vibrant street art, which served as our portal to the Great Ocean Road. But before taking off we made use of Melbourne’s free tram service, tracked down some fairy penguins in St. Kilda, and watched New Year’s Eve fireworks from a rooftop bar, drinks in hand. 28

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

After a quick stop at the Tower Hill Reserve filled with koalas, bizarre lizards, and giant Emus, we arrived at our final stop on the road trip: Grampians National Park. Despite temperatures of over one hundred degrees we powered to the top of the lofty Pinnacles cliff for a panoramic view unlike anything I had seen before. We spent our last night camping under stars and waking to the crash of kangaroo feet around our campground.

TASMANIA With the conclusion of the Great Ocean Road, it was time to check out a much different region of Australia, an island south of Melbourne called Tasmania. In comparison to mainland Australia, Tassie is a quiet place with picturesque beaches and abundant wildlife.

We spent our first day on a cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys to the rugged bluffs of the Tasman Peninsula. The cliffsides, and much of Tasmania, are made of a subvolcanic rock called Dolerite whose hardness is close to diamond. This geology allowed for intricate cave systems to form across the Peninsula, some of which we were able to idle our boat through. For the remainder of the cruise we made friends with fur seals, albatross, dolphins, and watched some fearless rock climbers ascend the arduous Totem Pole rock. For our final days we made our way up Tasmania’s East Coast route, encountering stunning vistas like Wineglass Bay, the bright red-turquoise Bay of Fires, and stopped to snap photos of all sorts of adorable creatures. It’s safe to say these vacation days were well spent.

BAKED ALASKA FLAMBÉ Inspired by Food Network

WANT TO MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOUR

?

Combine an exotic dessert with an impressive show! Surprise your guests by putting an ice cream cake in the oven and then setting it on fire! Baked Alaska is one of the most creative yet easy desserts that requires minimal preparation and no baking skills. It looks absolutely breathtaking when served in flames flambé style. This easy recipe is both a treat and an impressive show. INGRIDIENTS

for CAKE: • • • • • •

for

1 pint of vanilla ice cream, softened 1 pint of chocolate ice cream, softened 1 pint of salted caramel ice cream, softened 1 quart of strawberry ice cream, softened 1 loaf of pound cake* 1 box Oreo handi-snacks cookie sticks

MERINGUE:

• 6 egg whites at room temperature • 1 cup of sugar • Pinch of cream of tartar

DIRECTIONS 1. Fill a large Zip-lock bag with the Oreo cookies and crush them with a rolling pin until they are crumb like. Spray a small metal bowl with cooking spray and line it with plastic wrap. Fill the bowl with scoops of the sorbet, vanilla ice cream, and half of the chocolate ice cream, alternating small and large scoops to create a mosaic of colors and shapes. Place a piece of plastic wrap on top of the ice cream; press down to close the gaps between scoops and even out the surface. Remove the plastic wrap, sprinkle the ice cream with the wafer crumbs and re-cover with the plastic wrap, pressing gently. Freeze until set, about 30 minutes. 2. Remove the wrap and spread the remaining chocolate ice cream in an even layer on top of the crumbs. Cut the pound cake into 1/2-inch-thick slices; completely cover the ice cream with the slices, trimming as needed (you’ll use about twothirds of the cake). Cover with fresh plastic wrap and freeze until firm, at least 2 hours or up to 2 days. 3. Make the meringue: Whip the egg whites and cream of tartar in a large bowl with a mixer on medium-high speed until foamy, about 2 minutes. Gradually beat in the sugar on high speed until the whites are glossy and hold stiff peaks. 4. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Bake the cake until the meringue peaks are golden, about 4 minutes, or brown the meringue with a blowtorch. Let the cake soften at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. 5. Pour some dark rum in a long stem glass, and light it up. Carefully pour the flaming liquid on top of your cake. Enjoy the show!

Will we lose the battle with Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial

vs

Intelligence

Is your book a warning to humanity or a statement of our future loss in the one-sided fight with AI?

What will help us survive in a world where AI decides everything?

We have built such a complicated civilization, that no one is able to manage it – neither Trump nor Putin, nor the UN, nor the EU, nor anyone else. It is, so to speak, more “incomprehensible”, more complex than the human mind is able to perceive. Even such innovative companies as Facebook and Apple, not to mention other industrial giants, have grown to such extent and are so drowned in their own bureaucracy, that they have become completely unmanageable. The world is becoming more and more complicated with each passing moment, while we are growing dumber and intellectually degraded under the influence of total digital dependence. And as for AI, it is proceeding to storm the intellectual Olympus. Most people tend to underestimate the scale of the coming war. They reassure themselves that in extreme cases, one can quit the Internet and go back 30 years, to fax machines and landlines. Will it be possible to revert back to the past, or will it be too late?

These matters of concerns were considered and answered by psychiatrist, Dr. Andrei Kurpatov, who has been actively promoting psychotherapy for over 20 years. He was the author and host of several programs on the first Russian TV channel. He also managed the “Red Square”, a major television program production company. He founded the “Clinic of psychological counseling and psychotherapeutic treatment” and the intellectual cluster “Mind Games” in St. Petersburg. Dr. Kurpatov has published 30 popular science books on various aspects of human behavior, with total circulation of more than 5 million copies. His books were even translated into eight languages!

Let’s face it – we will never stop using the Internet, unless, of course, there will be some global catastrophe (which is not excluded) resulting in its disconnection. However, I do not think that we will have a real war between mankind and Artificial Intelligence. It will be some kind of hybrid war: Artificial Intelligence will undertake our intellectual tasks step by step, and, accordingly, we will dumb down. A brain without training its intellectual functions, quickly turns into a cabbage.

His last book “The Fourth World War “, caused an incredible reaction. In this book, he describes the outcome of Artificial Intelligence vs. mankind. So, what comes next and how do we survive in the world of machines? What was the purpose of writing “The Fourth World War”? This book was conceived of a series of articles I had written for a major Russian portal. The articles were rather ironic, in fact: on one hand, I described the way modern people have dumbed down; and on the other hand, I showed that Artificial Intelligence is “smarter” than ever. And I was incredibly surprised by the reaction. Although the audience of this online publication was considered to be the most intellectual, commentators began to argue in eager rivalry. So, I decided to change my humorous mood and speak seriously. And not about some distant future, but about what is happening now!

The world is becoming more and more complicated with each passing moment, while we are growing dumber and intellectually degraded under the influence of total digital dependence. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

WHO will win in this

WAR?

It is quite possible that we simply will not have time to reach this “superpowerful” AI, which, as Kurzweil promises, should make our life incredible. Most likely, we will get stuck somewhere at the entrance of this technological paradise. We will find ourselves in a world where everything works in the wrong way, some protocols conflict with others, big data turns into meaningless garbage, everything crashes, catastrophes follow one another, and there is no one who is capable of managing it.

This book tells you why artificial intelligence is not fiction, how it works, and why it is smarter than our brains. You will learn how AI thinks, and what the consequences of the latest scientific discoveries are. Will this help you prepare for a new reality? No. However, you will seriously think about what is happening now! 36

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

In your book “The Fourth World War”, you describe three possible scenarios, and they all are far from happy endings. Do we still have a chance to win control over AI, and if we do, what should humanity undertake today? The unique characteristic of the future, is just our imagination. We don’t know our future; and therefore there may be a lot of probable future forecasts. Good or bad – it does not matter, they can be invented and re-invented in unlimited quantities. Therefore, I honestly do not like forecasts. I prefer to have available facts as a base. The facts prove that technology simplifies human life, and deprives a man of the need to solve complex intellectual problems. We should also consider uncontrolled information consumption — according to Kaspersky Lab, more than 60% of today’s young people (from the US to Russia) are constantly online. All this leads to people’s mind-numbing – “digital dementia”. How do we escape this dead-end? There is a rather extreme method: it is necessary to create intellectual reservation areas, where digital content will be narrowed, and all efforts will be directed to the systematic development of analytical abilities of people from their earliest childhood. It seems to me that the right thing to do now, is not to train a detachment of brave men for a flight to Mars, but a detachment of intellectuals who will be able to maintain the stability of our own civilization when something goes wrong. And the fact that something will go wrong, seems very, very probable to me.

Scientists predict that global robotization will deprive more than 50% of people of their jobs by 2038. Are there any professions that will remain in demand? I think we should consider this issue from a different point of view, as all professions will undergo radical changes in the near future. Some professions will disappear completely, but all other professions will undergo changes (except for hairdressers, maybe). Doctors will require additional skills different from what they have acquired. We will all become just add-on units to complex hardware, and for the most part, I’m afraid, rather dumb add-on units – just its human interface. Therefore, my position is as follows: it is necessary to master your brainwork. Obtain skills of intellectual activity, and only after that, such a person will always be able to adapt to new challenges and succeed in the framework of social competition, which, obviously, will only increase.

getting rid of digital addiction and limiting information consumption — our brain needs time to think. absolute acceptance of facts about our human nature. While we live in illusions about ourselves and our lives, it is pointless to think. it is necessary to master the skill of “focused thinking”, which I describe in my book “Mind Palace”. WHAT MAKES A PERFECT MAN?

The Perfect Man: defenition: An unknown creature available only in books and movies.

by Lika Emelyanov

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so no doubt that every woman has a different idea of what she finds attractive. Sometime I pick up an issue of People Magazine and wonder, how come Ryan Gosling or Will Smith have never been named “The Sexiest Man Alive”. The term “sexy” in itself can mean something different to different people. Is it a muscular build, a perfect smile, or a good sense of humor?

We asked 10 women of different age and walks of life what a “perfect man” means to them.

1

Confidence and power. If a man looks like he owns the room, he’s instantly attractive to me. I also pay attention to man’s hands. If a man has big strong hands, I’ll feel fragile and safe when he holds me. Anya A., 34

2

Sense of humor! Being able to laugh at the stresses of this world is a must! Also, a man gets bonus points if he can actually make me laugh. Humor shows that a man is an optimist and can handle any curve balls life throws at him. Natalie B., 25

3 4 5

6

A man should know how to dress. If a guy is stylish and wears something red, he’s irresistible!

7

Generosity. It goes further than just a dinner at a fivestar restaurant or Gucci shoes. Generosity to me, means man’s willingness to give me his time and attention. Anna M., 32

8

I have a thing for men in uniform. There is something heroic about guys who do risky things for a living.

9

Oksana K., 27

When I was 18, I thought the sexiest thing in a man was a bulging back and a three-day stubble. Now, the top sexiest thing in a man is seeing how he plays with our children. A sight like that makes me fall in love with him over and over again. Maria K., 33

I am attracted to older men because they know how to handle a woman. They are wiser, better in conversation, and have more life experience. Elena J., 22

A fit man is a sexy man, the more muscles, the better. Lilia V., 21

Kristina D., 18

10

I’ll never go on the second date with a guy who is not put together. Personal hygiene and a great style sounds like winner to me. Shoes are especially important. Olga V., 28

For me a “sexy man” is a man, who respects my opinion, even when it differs from his. A real man sees me as his equal, as someone of great value who can grow with him, not someone who is there to feed his ego, give him validation, or be his emotional crutch. He respects everything about me - my opinions, thoughts, and ambitions. Svetlana L., 43

According to our sample group, a perfect man is more than just a buff, well-built, real life version of Brad Pitt. It’s someone who has what it takes to make a woman feel attractive, loved, and secure. We hope you find the one who finds you perfect! 38

IF YOU ARE GOING TO DREAM….

by Olga Garicichina

DREAM BIG! Paul BORODENKO

Paul Borodenko is a self-made businessman who started as a part-time worker at Safeway. After a couple of years, he built three successful companies: Legacy Cleaning Services Spectrum One, Inc. Scavolini Store Roseville

How did your business journey begin?

Did you have a business mentor during your work and studies?

I remember since I was young, I always enjoyed engaging in some sort of business transactions/negotiations with my peers. It was all on the smaller scale, of course, yet I knew it was definitely in me. At the age of 25, I learned some major life lessons. Recovering from my drug-addiction, I successfully completed a Christian based rehabilitation program. I turned my life around 180 degrees and realized my passion was for business. While working parttime at Safeway, I enrolled in a Business Administration program at a private local college (MTI). It was a two-year program and tuition for the first year only was approx. $15,000. Of course, I didn’t have that kind of money at that time, so I had to take out a student loan, which was a huge leap of faith for me. I was able to receive a grant from the Government due to my low income, which covered about half of the tuition’s cost. And then my business journey began... Yes, I had a mentor who helped me in my first business. During my studies, I was offered to work part-time as an administrator for a local construction company owned by a Russian-American. I enjoyed working closely with the owner and learned so much during my time there. Eventually the owner became a good friend and a great mentor. While working for this

This year, Paul received an award as the Best Entrepreneur of the Year by the Russian Speaking Community. How does one start a business without big investments, overcome difficulties and find motivation? This charming and talented businessman, Paul Borodenko, shares his insight.

company I opened up my first business “Legacy Cleaning Services”. I was servicing this company’s projects with postconstruction cleanups. This is how I first started making money as a businessman. Soon after, I realized it was time for me to fully spread my wings and with the owners blessing, in October 2013 I opened up my own Construction Company named Spectrum One, Inc.

What are the main principles to be followed in order to create a successful company?

Many businessmen adhere to the rules of focus. That is, they give all their strength to one project. You have several successful companies: Legacy Services, Spectrum, and Scavolini. How do you manage so many businesses and develop them?

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

I believe the number one principal for a successful business is integrity. Followed by a good work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile for your team and most importantly, your client!

Absolutely, focus is everything! That is why I would not recommend opening up several businesses all at once. After my first company was well established and had good systems in place, only then I opened up my second company and eventually my third. Having the right people in place, providing incentives so no micromanagement is required and proper systems that allow minimal involvement on my end, allowed me to build and successfully maintain multiple endeavors. A great team and a great structure are the secrets to success!

One famous businessman once said: “ I would not perform a task which can be performed by someone else”. Implying - the only way to own multiple successful businesses and to grow, is to learn how to delegate responsibilities instead of trying to do everything yourself. It’s also very important to understand when the time is right to expand. Many business owners fail because they expanded too fast. So one step at the time!

Are there any peculiarities of doing business in the United States? What mistakes, in your opinion, do Slavic entrepreneurs often make here?

It is imperative when doing business in the USA to follow the laws, rules, and regulations as prescribed for each industry. The biggest mistake I see entrepreneurs make, is neglecting the rules and because of this, they get in trouble. There is a very good saying in the Bible recorded

in Proverbs 17:1 (GNT) Better to eat a dry crust of bread with peace of mind than have a banquet in a house full of trouble.

A well-known Russian proverb says that behind every successful man there is a woman who believes in him. Do you agree with this statement? Does your spouse support you in your projects?

42

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Absolutely agree with this saying! I can’t imagine how I could be successful without the love, acceptance and full support of my better half! My wife is always there for me and helps me tremendously on multiple levels! I am forever grateful to her for being there for me not only when the times are good! We’ve been through so much together... Having a loving and supporting wife is definitely one of the biggest secrets for a successful businessman!

How do you try to spend your free time away from business? What hobbies do you have?

Most of my free time I spend with my family. We take our kids to the movies or places where they can be free and have a good time. We eat out at restaurants, go out of town for a couple of days on regular basis and of course, we never miss our once-a-year 10-day vacation! I believe experiences are more valuable than things. Spending quality time with my family is extremely important to me. My wife and I love going out on romantic dates to share our achievements and challenges with each other. I also enjoy working out at the gym with my personal trainer who pushes me to my limits.

What advice would you give to those who are just looking for a niche and want to start a business? What mistakes can young entrepreneurs try to avoid?

My advice is to learn how to not be afraid to dream big. Many times we limit ourselves because we don’t believe we can achieve something. It’s always scary to make that first step but if you feel it in your heart that this is the path you should take - then go for it! It’s ok to fail and make mistakes - this is the only way you will learn and grow. You must be willing to do the hard work and to stay committed to the end. Set clear goals for yourself and achieve them! Start your business the right way by trying to follow all the rules from the beginning and build a solid foundation. Never fall for a “Get Quick Rich” trap! It takes time to build a profitable and successful operation!

Tell us about your biggest mistake. What did you learn from it?

How much money do you need to be happy?

The biggest mistake I made in my life is when I turned away from God my Heavenly Father. I’ve learned that without Him I can never be happy nor satisfied. Everything is different now - thanks to Him!

The amount of money I have in my bank does not determine my happiness (it can only affect my mood sometimes). What determines my happiness is the piece of mind and joy in my heart. Also knowing how to appreciate and value what I already have. With this said, I am a very happy man already! Money is just a tool it gives opportunities. More money - more opportunities yet with great opportunities come great responsibilities! I strongly believe it is important to use these opportunities wisely and make sure not to forget to invest in the heavenly bank! My belief is after we leave this Earth we won’t be asked how big was our house or what kind of car we drove, but rather what good did we do while living our lives? How many people did we help? Those are the things which will stay with us for eternity and which matter the most!

How did your hobby of training service dogs begin?

Can all dogs be trained to help people with disabilities?

FACTS ABOUT VARIOUS JOBS by Igor Alatortev

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Many years ago, I had a friend of a friend who was raising and training assistance dogs for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). I asked him to tell me about it and decided that I wanted to do the same. So, I applied to raise and train my first puppy! That was in 2005, and I since have raised 9 service dogs. In 2010, one of the dogs whom I trained, was selected to be a Breeder-Dog for CCI. They select the top two percent of service dogs for breeding, and they selected mine! My husband and I decided to become her Breeder-Caretakers, as they call it. BreederCaretakers provide homes for the Breeder-Dogs, assist with whelping (labor and delivery of puppies), and take care of the puppies for the first seven-and-a-half weeks of their life. So far, we have had eleven litters of puppies born in our house from three breeder-dogs, 73 puppies in all. They went onto training to become service dogs for people with disabilities, some became service dogs, and some are still in training.

I don’t think that you can train any dog to be a service dog. The dogs who we raise and train, are specifically bred for this program. This breeding program exists since 1975, and only the best dogs in the program are selected for breeding. The breederdogs are selected for their temperament, behavior and for their abilities to learn. Therefore, the puppies are already born with the qualities that are needed to be a service dog.

Their training starts with specific exercises when they are only several days old. Also, a lot depends on the dog’s breed. Our dogs are yellow or black Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or crosses between these breeds. These breeds are most suitable to be service dogs for people with disabilities because they can retrieve and bring things (this is why they are called retrievers), they are hardworking, and they want to please you. Also, they are the right size: large enough to pull a wheelchair or open doors, but not too big to take too much space.

What are the main skills should be trained dog that will help people with disabilities? First, the dog has to be very well behaved and to feel comfortable in any situation and environment. If the owner is deaf, his service dog alerts him to different sounds. If the owner doesn’t have arms, the dog carries his bag and other things for him. In stores, the dog gets his bank card from his wallet, gives it to a cashier, then takes the card and the receipt and puts them back in his wallet. So, what the dogs have to be trained to do depends on her future owner’s needs.

Is it hard to say goodbye to the dog that you raised and trained? We have each dog approximately for a year and a half, and this dog is always with us. The dog who I train, goes to work with me and everywhere where I go, travels with me and they are with me, as they say, 24/7. Of course, you get attached. But then, you know that this dog has a much bigger and more

important purpose in life than to be your pet. They will change someone’s life and will do that in part thanks to you. This makes you very proud when your dog graduates and goes on to help others and enhances their lives.

How has your hobby changed you? I would say that it not only taught me how to train dogs, it has indeed changed me. I became more outgoing because when I am with my dog, people often come up to me and start talking. I made many new friends who have the same hobby. I became more compassionate, more understanding and more patient with different kind of people. I started to appreciate life and my health much more when I was meeting people who are getting our dogs. I realize what a blessing it is to be alive and healthy when there are many others who cannot walk, or talk, or hear, or who live in constant pain.

Are there dangerous dog breeds or is it a myth? I am not an expert here, but I believe that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

What is the need for specially trained dogs? I can tell that the demand for service dogs for people with disabilities is very high, and there is definitely not enough specially trained dogs. People wait for the dogs whom we raise and train for at least two years, some even longer. Many applications for service dogs are denied because there are not enough dogs. Therefore, we need more

volunteers who would do what I am doing: raise puppies and train them, and also participate in taking care of the breederdogs and newborn puppies.

What would you like to change in the field where you are volunteering? We need more volunteers and more professional service dog trainers. To be a professional dog trainer is a very skilled and difficult task; those who do such work are highly educated and very talented. At the same time, their pay is low, and because of that, not many people want to go into this profession. People with disabilities get our dogs for free, the organization doesn’t have any funding, only private donations. While the cost of each our service dog is estimated from $25,000 to $50,000, none of the dog recipients are ever charged even a penny. Thus, the organization needs more money and more donors so that they could have more dog trainers and more service dogs.

The most touching moment in your practice? I think that the most touching moments are when your dog graduates and you go on stage at the graduation ceremony and give your dog’s leash to their new owner, a person whose life your dog will forever change. Then you see this person’s face and how they look at your dog, with such happiness, and pride and hope. This is especially moving when this person is a child. Your dog runs to their new person, to their new life, with the wagging tail, and doesn’t even look back at you. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Service Dog VS

Trained Dog A regular welltrained pet dog is just that – a well behaved dog. Our service dogs are not only well behaved, but also trained to do certain tasks that a regular pet dog cannot do. They can open and close doors, turn lights on and off, bring things, push wheelchairs, help people to dress and undress. Our dogs can pick up a phone when it is ringing and bring it to you, or even bring things from a refrigerator. For children with autism, service dogs can detect when a child is going to have a tantrum and calm him, or help a child with limitations. There are special types of service dogs, for example, medical alert dogs who can alert people with diabetes if they have low blood sugar, or help alert people with seizures that they are going to have a seizure.
