Pink ponies, Cinderella, Spider-Man, kettle corn and giant, inflatable slides; all these and more were noted on an impressive festival attraction list that Daria, my Director of Operations, was reviewing with me. We were getting ready for the International Kids Festival, a family event that started 14 years ago as a neighborhood picnic and escalated into a major, annual festival that has become a tradition for the local communities.

I was delightedly reviewing the exciting lineup we had prepared for our guests, when I noticed that Daria had spaced out. She was looking outside the window and a smile crossed her face. She caught my eye and said, “I am sorry. We were looking through photo albums last Sunday and came across our family pictures from years ago. In the pictures, we were sitting on a blanket with mom and dad having a picnic at this very festival that I am now organizing. Our parents used to bring us to this event for years when we were kids, until we grew up.”

It melted my heart and made me think of Margret, another bright member of my team. She met her husband at this festival fourteen years ago, when they were both just kids, waiting in line for a jump house. They are now happily married and expecting their first baby girl. There are lots of different events, concerts, and festivals in the summer. I encourage you to get out there and make memories by meeting new people and making new friends. You never know where it may take you! You might add some new pictures to your family album, or maybe even meet someone who’s going to become a part of your family.

B Do you know how I pictured America before I moved here? Like Hollywood portrays it: skyscrapers, yellow taxis, millionaires walking down the streets and cops with donuts in their cars. And if there are really a lot of millionaires and policeman here, then the skyscrapers and architecture are just exaggerations.

After visiting several states with my husband, despite all the beauty and picturesque landscapes, I was tired of same signs, same buildings, and same shops, I wildly wanted to be back in Europe.

THE MOST EUROPEAN CITY IN THE UNITED STATES

ON

I missed the beautiful buildings, stylish citizens, colorful cafes, long walks around the city and the four seasons, which California is deprived of. Unexpectedly, my husband saved me from sadness and surprised me with tickets to Boston, the city which most guidebooks call «the most European city in America.» To be honest, this getaway broke my heart because at the end of our week, I did not want to fly back to my beloved California. Boston is actually a slyly cool

town. With its rich heritage, amazing ancient architecture, stylish people, beautiful nature, delicious food and devotion to the sport, the Hub is a wonderful place to spend a day, a week, or even a lifetime.

I do not want to bore you with a typical 10 Things to Do in Boston that all list “go to the Museum of Science” and “see a Red Sox game.” Those are obvious. I would rather offer you my exciting suggestions that will allow you to realize the beauty of Boston.

MUST GO TRAIL: Ready to take an unforgettable walk through Boston’s history? The red stripe marking the Freedom Trail stretches for 2.5 miles through Boston’s most historic neighborhoods and takes you to 16 sites essential to the birth of American liberty. Boston has more sites related to the American Revolution and America’s fight for independence than any other city. As you walk along the Trail, you’ll travel through Historic Downtown Boston, the North End, and Charlestown, from Boston Common to the Charlestown waterfront. All of these sites are authentic - not re-creations or reproductions. We passed through all of the city’s sites in two days. We highly recommend spending a couple hours at the North End, also known as a “Little Italy” which struck with the authenticity, architecture and the tastiest cafes and restaurants. Although in any city there is an Italian quarter, I was blown away by the originality and beauty that distinguishes this one from all the others.

MUST SEE NEIGHBORHOOD To study at Harvard is the dream of hundreds of thousands of students around the world. But a walk through the oldest and most prestigious institution is a must after your arrival in Boston. The walk from the center of Boston to Harvard University took us about an hour, but on the campus, you can walk endlessly. Go to the Harvard Information Center to take a spirited and entertaining free walking tour of the campus guided by a student who will share history, Harvard lore, and personal perspective. The most popular statue of John Harvard that stands in Harvard Yard and is the third most photographed statue in the U.S. is a fake! Despite its popularity, Harvard students call it the “Statue of Three Lies” because the inscription reads “John Harvard, Founder, 1638”. John Harvard was in fact not the founder but rather a benefactor who was honored in the naming of the university. Harvard was also not founded in 1638 but in 1636 and is the oldest college in the U.S. Finally, the statue is not actually a depiction of John Harvard, but of a random student sculptor, Daniel Chester French used as a model. John Harvard’s foot is also one of the shiniest objects found on Harvard campus because of the countless people who rub it for good luck. However, be warned, mischievous Harvard freshmen are known to play pranks that leave his foot quite unsanitary!

MUST GO ADVENTURE This Getaway experience was probably one of the best in my life. If you have more than two days for New England, I highly recommend booking a night in a 160-square-foot wood cabin for roughly $150 per night. These cabins are located over an hour away from Boston in the sleepy forests of Southern New Hampshire. It is definitely worth checking out if you need to unplug, recharge, sing with the birds, meditate and reset your mind. Each cabin has one or two queen beds, fresh linens and pillows, a hot shower, bath products, an electric toilet, a heater and a mini-kitchen. Getaway founder and CEO Jon Staff, who started the business with fellow Harvard graduate Pete Davis in 2015, said the tiny houses had been almost 100-percent occupied since the company launched, and that he has a steady waiting list.

THINGS ONLY BOSTONIANS SAY: Bostonians have an undeniably distinct accent. Even if you’ve never stepped foot in the city, you’ve seen the movies. The Departed, Good Will Hunting, Mystic River, Ted - all solid representations of the city’s recognizable linguistics. There are three main rules, which Bostonians use: Dropping the Rs (chowadah = chowder) Pronouncing multiple words as one (howahyah? = how are you)vAdding Rs back on to words where they shouldn’t be (soder = soda)

Townie

A native to neighborhoods in the Boston area, like Charlestown and Dorchester.

Bubbler (pronounced

Dunks

Boston’s favorite coffee shop, Dunkin’ Donuts.

What is striking: Boston is struck by the combination of style, science, history, and nature. It does not look like any American city. Must try restaurant: Boston is home to some of the best lobster rolls, chowders, fried clams, and cod dishes. There’s no excuse not to try them while you’re here… unless you’re allergic to seafood. We highly recommend reserving a table at the Atlantic Fish & Co restaurant. The restaurant originally opened in 1978 and is known for offering a wide variety of the freshest seafood available. If I had to describe this restaurant in 5 words, they would be fresh, quality, friendly, classic, and Boston.

ADVENTURES: ADRENALINE AT THE EDGE

You know the difference between a wife and a car? A wife does her own tuning, but a car’s tuning is a husband’s job. Even after growing up, men remain boys who could for hours, with complete abandon, play with their four-wheeled toys and work on perfecting them. My husband and I had known Dima Dolotov for a long time, and we couldn’t help noticing how enthusiastically he always talked about cars. The fire in his eyes and the love for four-wheeled creatures were obvious from a mile away. That’s why, when Dima invited us on a mini-trip to the mountains in off-road vehicles that he had personally build, we said YES! without thinking another second. Whatever came out of that is for you to read right here and now! 24

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

«Dima, stop the car, I want to get out, I’m scared, we could fall into the abyss…»

AD OF THE ABYSS

This thought was playing in my head about 20 times, and I kept holding off on saying it out loud since I didn’t want to look like a coward. Our huge SUV continued its unwavering climb up towards the mountain top, erasing any bumps and rocks under its wheels, and I was thinking to myself about the nerves of steel the lovers of offroad adventures must possess. My head was spinning, either because of the adrenalin rush or because of the altitude and purest mountain air. Some beginning to an off-road adventure this was…

10:17 am: We get onto Highway 49, the huge Toyota Land Cruiser is followed by the eyes of the drivers in cars that fly by, while I, not wanting to waste time, start asking Dima about how his hobby has evolved into a business.

Dima, how did you get the idea to modify vehicles for off-road adventures? Cars are my passion, my inspiration and something I have been involved in for a long time. I have been changing cars for over 10 years, I have been improving their technical specifications, turning them into real monsters capable of overcoming any obstacles. I cannot imagine my life without adventures and off-road trips, so for me such a vehicle is not a luxury, but a mere necessity. And after I began falling in love with off-road trips, I have found a huge number of like-minded individuals who have been traversing California and modernizing their SUVs.

11:04 am:

Making it into a steep turn we noticed a guy who was standing miserably on the shoulder while his Toyota FJ Cruiser was stuck in a crevice. Dima made a sharp turnaround and helped the luckless driver get his vehicle out.

So, do you often help such hapless drivers? Anyone could get stuck, that’s why I always have everything necessary for an emergency with me in my car. There are always risks, especially during off-road adventures, so there should always be a plan B, and it is best to travel with someone, - it’s safer this way.

11:55 am: We deflate the tires before beginning our climb up to the top of a steep mountain. Every Dima’s move is precise, he’s a connoisseur, one feels it right away.

Dima, what cars are most often used for tuning and what is the minimum price range for that? The most popular brands are Toyota, Jeep and Mitsubishi. They are modernized most often. The minimum budget also depends on whether the buyer already has a car, or he wants to purchase an offroad SUV and then tune it. For example, you can get a used Toyota, invest $3,000-$5,000 worth of suspension and wheels, and the car will already be prepared to tackle most obstacles. The midrange price tag for our service at Stellar Built is $10,000-$15,000. Some cars cost less, while there are some that the owner will be out $50,000, or even $100,000 to tune them.

More info of Dima’s work: @stellarbuilt @stellarbuilt (916) 882-0333

Starting off-road, I realized how big the community here is, in California and how many lovers of such adventures we have. And the need for highly qualified specialists in this field was great. In our Stellar Built shop, we do not simply change cars, we think over the concept. We take into account even the smallest details so that the driving characteristics and aesthetics of the vehicle are the top notch. Customers, seeing this approach, appreciate our service and recommend it to their friends and acquaintances. I see Stellar Built as an off-road manufacturing business as well as the go-to off-road shop servicing Northern California.

12:36 pm: We get to the top of the mountain range. Dima says that the difficulty level of this route is 4 out of 10. Nervous, I can’t resist the thought of what awaits those who go on a 10-out-of-10 trip. What do you do with all of the adrenaline?

Dima, how does your wife look at your hobby? She loves to travel with me, in this respect, we are tuned to the same frequency. You see, off-road adventures are not just a way to tickle your nerves. In reality, this passion widens human horizon, the trips we take make us learn the history of the places we visit, we recharge with the energy of nature, we keep discovering new places, and as we overcome obstacles, we get an adrenaline rush, of course.

01:42 pm

We are at the top of the slope, enjoying unbelievable views, squinting at the whiteness of the snow and at the sun that’s warming us with its soft spring rays.

Tell us, what was the most unusual vehicle you were asked to tune, and what were the most unforgettable places that you visited on your Toyota? The most unusual request came from a client who asked us to build an off-road Porche Cayenne. We made it happen and had a lot of fun doing it. As for the top spots that I have been to and that have left me with the most unforgettable experiences, these will be: Rubicon Trail (Lake Tahoe area), Death Valley, Oregon cascades.

3:17 pm:

Happy, satisfied, a little tired, we are sitting in a cozy little café in Nevada City. Dima is answering our endless line of questions and sharing his plans for the future while we await juicy burgers.

Dima, you are investing so much into Stellar Built that there is no doubt your company will be a success. How do you see your business in 10 years? I see Stellar Built as an off-road manufacturing business as well as the go-to off-road shop servicing Northern California.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: My morning begins with going out to my yard and stretching with my dog Jasper. I’m proud to be a Russian/American. Car that speaks to me is Toyota Land Cruiser, Tacoma close second. I also enjoy taking back roads in my BMW M3. Hidden talent: cooking. I love to cook and love to eat. Name 3 qualities of a real men - Integrity, Passion and Patience. I would love to meet Richard Branson.

My first job in US was making pizza at Papa Murphy’s. Life’s moto: Stay hungry, stay foolish - Steve Jobs What makes you achieve your goals? Desire to be a better man than I was the day before. My every day car is Ram 2500. 3 advantages of living in Cali: Sierra Nevada, awesome weather, best beer in the world. Song for all times: Sun is Shining by Bob Marley.

That Even Meat Lovers Will Like My husband is a die-hard meat eater, so when I introduced him to the idea of vegan meals, he didn’t even want to give it a chance. Much like most people, he believed that meatless meals can’t be satisfying. Here are three delicious, healthy, and avorful vegan recipes that helped me change his mind. Try these yourself and you might say, “I can’t believe this is vegan!”

Be I am quite an optimistic person and I am not prone to drama, but even I think that the idea of parenting is being seriously neglected by my generation. The number of divorces is record high and a lot of my peers choose a life free of marriage or parental responsibilities.

At the same time, raising a happy family is one of the most fascinating accomplishments fascin one can achieve. Having a place to call home and people that love you unconditionally is a true blessing. We wish to share a story of four dierent families with unique destinies but one thing in common, they nd family to be a source of inspiration and strength.

This young family is often described as passionate, lovable and high-spirited. Serge & Natalie met at a young age of 15 when they happened to be sitting next to one another at a ne music concert. Little did they know that 5 years later these high-school sweethearts would be saying “I do!” As a newly married couple and their love for music, these two song birds dove into singing just about everywhere, including being the front vocalists/entertainers for one of the most well-known party bands in Sacramento, known as B Sharps! They are blessed with three beautiful children Abigail (age 4), Claire (age 3), and their three month old son Caleb. mo

The Moskalets family Motherhood or a career Although being a stay-at-home mom is probably the most rewarding job of all, I believe that a career is possible with three kid kids. I honor women who can balance both career and children, and I believe that a mother can have an especially unique impact on her career.

Problems you didn't expect, but encountered after having children We continually heard from other parents that sleep was rare with children. We didn’t fully believe it until we had children of our own. We haven’t slept since!

Where do you nd strength? Marriage is a team. In a team you are actively looking out for one another and ready to take over if needed. In our ma marriage we feel one another and run in to provide when the other spouse is running low. It’s a beautiful dance.

How to nd a good father? belie that a I believe good dad is not born. A good dad is one who can recognize the responsibility given to him by God and one who can steward his family well.

The Mischenko family started 28 years ago, when Dmitry and Svetlana met at the Moscow Financial and Economic Institute where they were both studying. They have three sons, Maxim (26), Michael (20) and Matvey (9). Matvey, their youngest son, was born with Down syndrome. Welcoming him into the family became a milestone that divided their life into a "before" and "after." It took God’s wisdom and much Go support from each other to rearrange their lives. Dmitriy and Svetlana founded a ministry called “Side by Side” to help other families with children with special needs. For already ve years Svetlana and her husband help families like theirs overcome difficulties and accept God’s unpredictable plan. sidebyside@hofb.org

Your Recipe for a happy family A sea of love, a spoonful of understanding, a cup of patience, a few cans of kindness, generously season with care and understanding and maintain harmony in any situation.

How did Matvey’s birth change your life? Dramatically. We changed our interests, habits, and surroundings. Most importantly, our relationship with God and our li outlook on life have changed. We always tell people that they don’t have to feel sorry for us, because we are blessed with a very special and sunny child.

Family tradition We try to go on a family vacation together every year. We usually spend it somewhere warm by the ocean. It gives us lots of impressions, memories and joy and leaves us reenergized for the rest of the year!

Book, movie or song that inspires you the most Based on our family experience we can rmly say that this is the book of Psalms from the Bible. It rescued us in the most difficult times of our life.

The Mironyuk family

The Mironyuk family is not just your average large family. During their 11 years of marriage, this young couple adopted 9 children and gave birth to 2. This modest and friendly people believes that a world without orphans is something that all of us should strive for. According to them, they felt a God’s calling to adopt children from orphanages after their rst son was born. They consider adoption as their vocation and refute the myths that this procedure is too difficult and expensive. The age of the children in the Mironyuk’s family range from 8 to 19 years old and 10 out of 11 kids are home schooled. Sergey Mironyuk

(916) 803-6032

Your biggest fear After we got our rstborn son, we decided to adopt another child, but we had too many questions and unfounded fears. We continued with the process and literally a few weeks after we brought our new child home, we realized that all our fears were in vain because a child can’t be a stranger.

The best gift you ever got We have two, the rst one was when our church remodeled our 2 bedrooms / 1bath house into a 6 bedrooms / 4 ba baths. And the second gift was when we were able to buy a 14-seater bus that could t all of us, and we now do not need to take two cars to go somewhere together.

3 major adoption myths 1. It’s impossible to adopt in the US O 2. Orphans have poor genetics and they may cause lots of problems in the future 3. Adopted child can destroy your family and it is impossible to love them as your own children

Your cherished dream We believe and hope that other families will also inspi be inspired by our example, and in the modern world will be fewer orphanages and all the kids will be able to nd their families in which they will be surrounded by love, care and affection.

The Vaughn family

It all started 18 years ago with an internship in Sacramento, i California, where a boy from Oklahoma and a girl from Pennsylvania rst met. They joined together in ministry and have been married for 16 years now. They have been blessed children aged 13, 11, 9 with 4 child and 5, along with one fur baby. When they started their family in 2004, they had the perfect plan. They were so excited to see their dreams unfold! In 2008, God took them on a different path by blessing the Vaughn’s family with a son with special needs. This was deenitely a twist in the roller coaster of life that made it a little more exciting and unpredictable! But if you have a ticket to ride with the lucky few...it’s deenitely a fun one with lots of turns, loops and twists!

The most crucial moment of your life When I rst laid eyes on Logan, I knew something was off. The Doctors didn’t think anything was wrong, so we went home. I started to lean on Doctor Google and so I searched for some of the answers for what I felt was “off”. After 3 months, I got the call that connrmed my suspicions- “Your son has Down Syndrome”.

The secret of being a good parent To have fun. Fun is a child’s language… so to teach, love and meet them you need to reach them in their language… which is fun. Whether it’s cooking, doing cho chores, going on a vacation, bike ride or even a bath- make it fun and I promise you will be the best parent to your child.

What are you doing when your children drive you crazy? You’ll nd us in the closet together eatingJody eating chips and me savoring a York peppermint patty until they stop ;)

What have your children taught you? So much! But I vividly remember taking my kids to the therapies when they were younger and seeing them interact with other kids with special needs…the didn’t see the wheelchairs, or weren’t scared of the sounds a kid might be making… they taught us to see past the disability and love people for what they are made to be!

1

How do you overcome creative blocks?

I rarely get creative blocks because I’m always creating. When you have a constant flow of creating and the act of ringing ideas to life inspiration will reward you constantly.

2

What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

Music is my greatest source of creative inspiration. So I’m constantly playing different types of sounds. Music helps me tap into emotions that ultimately bring out more ideas.

3

How is your personality reflected in your work?

My work is filled with energy, movement, and color. I’m always on the go and I love living a colorful life full of adventure. I guess you can say my life imitates art, or my art imitates life.

4

What is your favorite completed piece?

There are so many to choose from. But my all time favorite painting was the one I performed at the White House of and for President Obama. It was a moment in time captured in paint. I was so honored to be there and it was created with a true grateful heart.

5

What brings you the greatest joy?

First and foremost my kids - I have two beautiful children, and I love seeing the world through their eyes. When it comes to creating I get the most joy from using my platform to help people in need.

6

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

Not a lot of people know that I used be in hip-hop dance groups growing up. I actually left dance to start painting. The original members of the Jabbawockeez founded the last group I was in. Put on any music, I will for sure not be shy to dance.

7

Name 1 thing on your bucket list

To visit Africa. It’s my last continent to visit, well besides Antarctica.

8

If you got in My mom for sure! trouble, which friend would you call for help?

What was your biggest childish dream? Have you dreamt of making lms since childhood? Since my childhood, I’ve always dreamt of being a musician, music was my everything and seemed to be the only possible way to express my ideas, feelings, and emotions across to a numerous number get them ac of people. Later when I was a teen, I got my rst camera. My friends and I shot short videos, simple short lms, which were something like vlogs (though none of us heard anything about YouTube), different jokes, and so on. Later started making simple videos for my music. I sta At some point I realized that movie was a much more extensive way of communication, which allowed me to express myself to the greatest extent. That’s why I tried to make my rst short lm. As it had been rewarded and had received a lot positive feedback and reviews, I realized that it was the activity to revie which I would wish to commit myself. What was the reason for your move to the US? Was it a difficult decision? I made many music videos for performers from Eastern Europe. Having shot a range of successful works in my motherland, I started receiving offers from American labels. I made a couple of videos for them when I was in Ukraine, and they were very pleased with the result. 2013 became a crucial time for me – I shot the music video Down & Dirty, and it got about 2 million views in just 2 days after release which was an incredible number for the rst music video of a young musician. We received a powerful feedback from the enormous

48

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

number of people all over the world, and everyone appraised this video as something exclusive for this kind of music. After that I received an invitation to come to the US to meet and discuss future cooperation. During my next visits to the US I had a chance to see how this industry is arranged here, I could learn from many people and as a result continue my career development. What was your rst impression about life and work in the USA? Have your li impressions changed over the years you’ve been living here? As surprisingly as it may seem, I didn’t feel any difficulties after I had moved here. I found the way of thinking of the people here and work speciics very close to mine. At once I felt to be in the right place and to be headed in the right direction. The US is one of the very few countries, where you can achieve incredible results if you are hard working and talented. This country offers everything necessary. What do you think to be your most signiicant achievement for now? What challenges did you face when bringing your plans to life? Undoubtedly it is my feature lm “The Perception.” I spent more than a year and a half to nish it, and I believe it is the greatest accomplishment in my career for now.

The most difficult was that I had to do everything on my own as opposed to my commercial projects, which usually have external nancing, for which I usually have large budgets, a team and nice possibilities of sale. When working at this project my partner Sam Malko and I had to nance and produce the process. We have gone through many whole p trials and paid a high price to put this dream into life. I’ve learnt a lot when making this lm and have gained many professional and personal skills. One thing is for certain: this lm has divided my life into “before” and “after”. It is obvious that being a lm director isn’t simple and it takes a lot of time and energy. How do you manage to nd an ideal balance between your professional and personal life? My main secret is that my wife is very active too, and she has got many goals and plans. We live in harmony, as it’s no problems for each of us to let the other be utterly absorbed with work when it’s necessary. The bottom line is that we always compensate it with a nice rest and pastime together.

1 - Industriousness. I can’t stop till I bring something to an end. External factors just can’t stop me. 2 - Craving for knowledge and personal development. I’m keen on self-education, I start every morning with a book, I watch all online video podcasts and master classes on topics I’m interested in. Even while driving I usually listen to audiobooks or podcasts. I enjoy getting new knowledge and I’m convinced that it is extremely important.

By the way, Elina was beside me all the time during lming and she did everything she could to help me – she was the stylist, the designer and even more. I’m incredibly grateful to her for that. In one of your short lms, you address some problems that exist in the nowadays society. Do you consider highlighting important social and other problems critical when creating a movie? It’s obvious that people of art should speak about problems of the society because they have innuence on people and their minds. Their creative work can change the world for better. But I have always been adherent to a softer careful implementation of such topics into my works. I don’t want my works to shout, I want them to speak in a calm shou manner, so that people want to listen to them, I want them speak not directly, but more delicately, on the level of the subtlest matters and perceptions as this is the surest way to make one think and reeect, change one’s opinion and vision about things.

3 - Flexibility. If the things are not going my way, I can easily change the plan. If I fail, I try to turn this failure into an opportunity, if I don’t know something, I learn it. never try to change anyone or join I ne any connicts, as they are never helpful for the most important things. I try to always keep my options open and take everything calmly. Be as calm as water – this is a Japanese wisdom, which I use in all life situations.

Beautiful

After years of trying to get the perfect smile that I envisioned, I found Dr. Crooks and her team. I chose her practice because of the many recommendations, but I stayed because I saw her passion for dentistry. When I decided to follow through with veneers, Dr. Crooks talked me through the entire process and what would be expected. I was nervous but she made me feel comfortable and excited! Dr. Crooks and her staff exceeded all my expectations! The confidence Dr. Crooks gave me is something I can’t thank her enough for. Dr. Crooks is a true artist and perfectionist, and it is apparent after seeing results!
