convocation address. Scales, a 1963 graduate of Rust College, urged everyone to “Speak a little louder, dig a little deeper and give a lot more!”



During the ceremony, the college recognized those who celebrated their 25th, 50th and 75th year since graduation. More than 40  members from the class of 1964 joined in the weekend’s festivities. They happily marched across the stage to receive their golden  Certainly in agreement with Scales’ address the class gave a lot more this year. After a few years ago, the class made plans to diplomas.  do something significant to mark its 50th anniversary. They started with a goal of about maybe $50,000. By Founders’ Week 2014, the class had raised more than $170,000. “We’re just a different class,” said Johnnie Harris Miles of Fairfax, Va. 

 Dr. Kitty K. Robinson of West Point, Miss., Barbara Smiley-Walker of Memphis, Tenn. and Mabel Wilson-Wesley of Inglewood, Ca. were slated to receive their diamond jubilee diplomas. Smiley-Walker’s daughter, also a member of the 1964, received her mother  diploma in her honor, but Wilson-Wesley was able to receive her diploma in person. The former member of the Rust College  A’Cappella Choir also enjoyed a serenade from current members of the choir. She thanked them with tears, her signature smile and an  invitation to visit her in California. 

CLEVELAND SELLERS Civil Rights leader Dr. Cleveland Sellers was the featured speaker at a Rust College campus and community assembly on Nov. 6 during the college’s 148th Founders’ celebration. Sellers’ speech highlighted a day that included a panel discussion on the Freedom Summer of 1964, a panel discussion and special unveiling of a historic marker dedicated to those who fought for racial equality. “Our work was not easy,” stressed Sellers to the audience remembering himself as a 19-year-old in search of the three civil rights who had been slain and were later found near Philadelphia, Miss. “I became mature as soon as I stepped onto the Mississippi soil.” The president of Voorhees College in his hometown of Denmark, South Carolina told stories of being

interrogated by the police in Oxford, Miss., and described a time where the Ku Klux Klan ran rampant burning crosses on church lawns and in front of businesses and homes of those sympathetic to the movement. “These are the kinds of experiences young people had to endure,” Sellers said. Despite the tense environment, the Holly Springs Project was able to get the largest amount of Mississippi Freedom Democrats registered for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Sellers said. They established Freedom Schools and boycotted merchants until they hired blacks. “As we look to commemorate the Voting Rights Act soon, let us not forget those who helped us put it back on the national agenda,” said Sellers. “As we seek to commemorate, let’s remember the those organizers, the sharecroppers, the students and the spirit that made that summer more than a fleeting season.”

Rust College unveils historic marker College unveiled a historic marker honoring the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) near the Rust College campus at 110 Rust Ave. in Holly Springs, Miss. as part of the school’s 148th Founders’ Week activities. Other events highlighting the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Freedom Summer were a documentary viewing, an open microphone discussion at and a panel discussion. “This institution has meant so much to so many for so long,” said Dr. David L. Beckley, president. “We have helped to bring about positive change in this community and world.
