BRIEF KEEPING SAFE AND SOUND AT UNIVERSITY PURPOSE The health, safety and security of students is a critical issue for everyone – for students and for the University, for whom we have a duty of care to inform how to avoid risks and look out for themselves. Still, accidents happen, things get damaged or stolen and people do get hurt. The University wants to effect a positive behaviour change in relation to student safety on campus, safety in halls and personal security. In the past, there has been a plethora of posters, leaflets and PowerPoint presentations, covering everything from fire safety to bike security, keeping safe walking home in the dark to looking where you’re going walking across campus. It’s really easy to dismiss this advice as just ‘common sense’ – but it’s more than that. We have thousands of students arriving at University, living away from home for the first time, often feeling they are mature, invincible and having no need for a ‘big brother lecture’ or a crash course in ‘elf ‘n’ safety’. So, we want to make a film that reaches students in a way they will like and remember that pulls this advice together succinctly and creatively.
The competition to win a MacBook Air is aimed at current students to help us come up with an approach, style or message via a tweet. This will be followed up by a short explanation of their idea for the film, if shortlisted by a University panel. So get tweeting!
