Welcome! February has been a great month for RUSU. We have held a number of campaigns and events but we also saw 2,791 students vote for a new student officer team who will start in office in July.
Go Green Week RUSU teamed up with the university to host over 20 events during this year’s Go Green Week. The aim of the week is to raise awareness and demand stronger action to tackle the climate crisis. Events included a Green Careers Workshop for students to find out about the sustainability sector from recent graduates, free bike checking and a sustainability road show. RUSU ran a competition called ‘R U an Entrepreneur?’ where students were asked to take a social problem, such as waste and find a social enterprise solution. Students were able to ask social enterprise experts about their experiences and the best idea submitted by students will receive funding to put the idea into practise. Moreover, the Vice- Chancellor, Sir David Bell and RUSU President, Mark Kelleher went to battle in a competition to divert waste from landfill. This year it was Sir David Bell who was announced ‘recycling champion’.
Improving Your Employability RUSU set up a campaign called ‘Improving Your Employability’ with the aim to help provide students with the skills and confidence they need when applying for jobs, to inform students about their rights when taking an internship and to engage students in discussion with industry professionals about what they should be doing other than their degree. RUSU worked with the Careers, Placements and Experience Centre to run a series of workshops to increase students’ confidence when applying to graduate schemes or internships. RUSU also held ‘The Big Q: Is a Degree Enough?’ A topical debate with industry professional addressing two questions 1) Is a degree enough? 2) What is a good internship? The debate was well attended and students were given the chance to pose their questions and meet with potential employers.
